SQL 2005 Express And Hard Disk Encryption

Jul 20, 2007

Hi All,

We have here a WinForms Application on laptops that uses SQL Express as its database. Initially all was going well, then it was decided that the laptop Hard Drive should be encrypted. Thats when the fun started.

It is now very hit and miss as to whether we can connect to SQL and service pack 2 will not install.

So now to the question :-

Does anyone know if there are any compatablity issues with SQL 2005 Express and hard disk encryption (particularly BeCrypt).

Thanks

Hello!

I have 2 harddisk in my computer and I have SQL 2005 Express on 1 of them (let's say C:), however, my C: is going to be full soon! Once it is full, is it possible to create a table on my other harddisk which the server can recognise?

Thanks!

Identifying What Is Using My Hard Disk Cycles

Jul 25, 2001

Hello,

I monitor a few "perfmon" counters which includes under the "system" object, "bytes transmitted/sec" and "file read bytes/sec". Every once in awhile, these counters will skyrocket, which can also be verified by the hard drive lights flickering like mad.

The only software installed on the machine is SQL Server 2K.

I was wondering if anyone knew how I could monitor within SQL 2K what process or user is using all of these cycles. If anyone could shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated. Specifically, I would like to find out which database/query is doing this to minimize in the future as this affects all of the other connections.

Thanks in advance,
Brent.

Export Data Onto Hard Disk

Mar 10, 2004

Hello People,

I have began to store binary data in my database, for example word documents, PDF's....etc.

But now my database file is growing beyond what I want, and I need to move all of the files out of the DB onto normal hard disk space.

Is there anyway, say by using a bulk copy command, that I can write all the contents of the table into a folder on my hard disk...???

My database table consists of ID(int), Filename(varchar), Filetype(varchar), Filesize(varchar), Filebody(image)

Any help would be extremely appreciated.....

Many Thanks,

Alan...

Installing Sql 2005 Management Studio Express On 2nd Hard Drive

Apr 25, 2006

Hi,

I've downloaded the sql server 2005 management studio express executable to my second hard drive, as there is no room on my main drive

However, when I try to install, the program shows me both drives, and shows that there is not enough room on my main drive, but it does not allow me to change the installation to my second drive.

I have previously installed the main sql express product to my second drive with visual studio. There's loads of room.

Can anyone give me a clue as to why this might be happening.

Thanks

There will be 2 Application instaces one poinint to each SQL Server instance. This applications does write into the database

So the underlying requirment is to have 2 database server running in differnet time zones but accessing the same disk/set of data

Iam not able to repair the corrupted Windows 2000 Advanced Serverinstallation but the file system is intact. SQL Security :: Encryption 2005 - User Defined Function For Encryption And Decryption

Oct 7, 2015

I have created two user defined functions for encryption and decryption using passphrase mechanism. When I call encryption function, each time I am getting the different values for the same input. While I searching a particular value, it takes long time to retrieve due to calling decryption function for each row.

best way to encrypt and decrypt using user defined functions.Below is the query which is taking long time.

SELECT ID FROM table WITH (NOLOCK)
                     WHERE dbo.DecodeFunction(column) = 'value'

When I try to use symetric or asymetric encryption, I am not able to put "OPEN SYMETRIC KEY" code in a function. So, I am using PassPhrase mechanism.

Is It That Hard To Deploy SQL Server Express?

I'm on day 3 of troubleshooting.... still no luck!Very simple application.  Extract data from the database and populate the GridView.Following error message:Server Error in '/WebSite3' Application.

An

failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot
be opened, or it is located on UNC share.-------------------------------------------------Look familar? so i Googled it and tried everything, from removing the User Instance = true in the web.config and even adding intial Catalog = Database and it didnt work.Instead i was greeted with a Newer Error msg:Server Error in '/WebSite3' Application.

Could not open new database 'Database'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted.Could

as database 'Database'.File activation failure. The physical file
name "D:-- Work Documents --WorkezabcWebSite3App_DataDatabase_log.LDF" may be incorrect. The log cannot be rebuilt when the primary file is read-only.Next i have no idea why it's pointing back to my location directory hence that could be the issue but i'll leave it to you experts for your valueable input. It's uploaded onto a web server running ASP 2.0 and MS SQL Server 2005 i thinkFeel free to ask if you need additional informationThanks for reading!

How Hard It Is To Develop On Express And Deploy On 2000?

Jun 2, 2006

Hey everyone,First off, sorry if this has been asked and answered before--I've tried searching the forums but may have just not used the right criteria.  Anyways, I'm new to .net and all that stuff, and I was wondering if there were any differences (code-wise) between developing on 2005 Express and running on SQL 2000.  I know there would be variations in the connection string, but I wasn't sure about anything else--specifically if they both use the sql provider thingy (I forget the name of it, since I don't have my book in front of me).  I don't expect there to be many differences, but I wanted to check before I got too deep into coding. Thanks in advance.

SQL Server 2005 Merge Replication Without A Hard Coded Password

Jan 10, 2007

Hi. I've looked all over MSDN, newsgroups and the web but I can't find the answer to a problem that I am having.

The application that I am working on used both transactional and merge replication. I want to avoid hard coding passwords into an application that kicks off the pull replication on the client machine.

The client machines are all using SQL Server 2005 Express. The other machine is running SQL Server Standard. The passwords and login details are specified in the subscription properties in the Management Studio.

A fragment of the code is posted below. The transactional sychronization works fine without having to specify any passwords - however the merge replication does not work if both of the passwords are not specified.

private void SynchButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Set up the subscriber connection details. subscriberConnection = new ServerConnection(subscriberName); try { // Connect to the Subscriber. subscriberConnection.Connect(); // Do the transactional subscription synchronisation independantly of the // merge subscription replication. try { transPullSubscription = new TransPullSubscription(subscriptionDbName, publisherName, publicationDbName, transPublicationName, subscriberConnection); // If the pull subscription and the job exists, start the agent job. if (transPullSubscription.LoadProperties() && transPullSubscription.AgentJobId != null) { TransSynchronizationAgent transSyncAgent = transPullSubscription.SynchronizationAgent; transSyncAgent.Synchronize(); } else { } } catch (Exception ex) { } // Do the merge subscription synchronisation independantly of the // transactional subscription replication. try { // Set up the subscription details for the merge subscription (bi-directional data) mergePullSubscription = new MergePullSubscription(subscriptionDbName, publisherName, publicationDbName, mergePublicationName, subscriberConnection); // If the pull subscription and the job exists, start the agent job. if (mergePullSubscription.LoadProperties() && mergePullSubscription.AgentJobId != null) { MergeSynchronizationAgent mergeSyncAgent = mergePullSubscription.SynchronizationAgent; mergeSyncAgent.DistributorPassword = "<<password>>"; mergeSyncAgent.PublisherPassword = "<<password>>"; mergeSyncAgent.Synchronize(); }etc etc..

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appeciated. Thanks.

SQL Server Standard 2005, SQL Mobile 2005 Data Encryption Issues

Jul 26, 2007

Hi,

I have a central database server that is runnning on SQL 2005 standard edition and Windows server 2003 standard as OS.

I realise that I can use SQL statements to encrypt and decrypt the data inside the standard SQL.

However, how do I read and write the data via an web application coded in C#.net and is also running on the same machine?

Another issue is, I need to replicate some of the data in this SQL standard over to a SQL mobile running on a mobile device running on Windows CE 5.0.

The mobile device also needs to read and write data to the encrypted data via a C#.net application.

Question is, with all these requirements to be met, can I use AES? I know that AES is not available on Windows XP and Windows Server 2000 and I cant find AES in the .net compact framework.

how do i go about ensuring security? how do I ensure that the symmetric key is the same both on the SQL standard and SQL mobile?

thank you.

Should The Quorum Disk Be A Physical Disk Or Majority Node Set?

Nov 15, 2006

Hello,

I am trying to setup a test cluster and am having an issue. When I try to create the resource of a physical disk it takes both the drive e: and drive q: and doesn't seperate them into two physical disks as resources. This means when I try to associate the quorum disk it links the to physcial disk resource of drive e and q. Then when I try to install SQL2k5 I get the warning about installing SQL on the quorum disk. Am I missing something? Is there a way to seperate e and q onto two physical disk resources so I can specifically associate the quorum to q and the sql to e or should I be setting the quorum disk to a majority node set? Thanks in advance.

SQL 2005 Encryption And C#

Nov 6, 2007

Hi everyone. I'm relatively new to the world of encryption and have a specific scenario on which I need guidance.

Scenario / Requirments:

1) Our DBA group is loading a table with SSN from Oracle into SQL 2005. They will be encrypting the SSN using the built in encryption functionality of SQL. Specifically, they are using a SQL generated Certificate. (create cert dboCert ... encryptBycert ...)

This is their preferred method of encrypting the data but they are willing to change it if I need them to. Our only requirement is that it is at least 128 bit- 256 is preferred.

2) I am returning information back to a C# class. I don't want to use the DecryptByCert function in SQL and then send the clear text across the wire between SQL and the Web server, so I need to return the data as cipher text and then decrypt it on the web server in C#.

3) I will be logging queries into another table for auditing, so I will need to re-encrypt the SSN into this new table.

It is not required, but would be ideal if I can use the same algorithm to encrypt this new table as SQL uses in the encryptByCert. This way the DBA team can decrypt both tables without using my C# code should the need arise.

How do I do this? I've figured out how to use AES in the Security.Cryptography namespace, but I've read that although symmetric encryption is much faster, it is not ideal to use in a distributed system due to key management. I€™m also not clear how to use this in SQL (not sure it matters if it€™s not the best way to go).

I'm about to start researching the Security. Cryptography namespace for asymmetic encryption using certificates, but I'm not sure how that works with the SQL Certs (are the RSA?, etc).

At this point, I'm on information overload and my head is spinning. J

Thank you,

Tom Hundley

Encryption SQL 2005

Jul 19, 2007

I have a desire to encrypt an entire database rather than utilizing TSQL to encrypt individual columns. Outside the SQL Server authentication and access should function as normal.

Reason: avoid customization and change to a vendor applicaiton, and satisfying the group security ghouls by being able to state definatively that the data within the database is encrypted.

The database is small as it contains only financial statement data, so performance should not be an issue.

Quorum Disk - Clustering SQL 2005

Feb 18, 2008

Dear All,

I am trying to setup clustering for SQL 2005. I initially want to setup a 2 node cluster in Active/Active Configuration.

I am trying to understand the Quorum disk in SQL 2005. As I understand the quorum disk is a shared resource. How is this resource configured? Would I need to have an iSCSI or fibrechannel connection from each of the nodes to the shared disk?

As well, does each node have a separate data drive? Or do all the nodes use only the shared storage?

Thank you.
