Stored Procedure Executing Durations Are Different Between Executing From Application(web) And SQl Server Management Studio - Query Window
Jan 23, 2008Hi,I have a web application using Stored Procedure (SP). I see that there's a SP taking long time to execute. I try to capture it by Profiler Tool, and find out that with the same SP on the same db with the same parameter. Viewing Large Numbers Of Stored Procs In SQL Server Management Studio
Jul 13, 2007I work with a large and complex reporting system with several hundred reports: the Programmability; Stored Procedures node of the object explorer has become very difficult to navigate.
Is there any metadata that can be embedded in the stored procs that would create subfolders like the existing System Stored Procedures node in this node of the object explorer?
I suspect that the correct answers are:
Rename all your queries with a rational naming convention;
Cull the deadwood;
Assign them to categories then export them to separate databases.
Unfortunately, one of these has already been done, and the other two will break several hundred dependent processes - the recoding and retesting is neither economical nor desirable.
Still, all advice is welcome. Pitch your answers at a banking geek who does intermediate to advanced stored procedures and triggers, but isn't allowed to play with sharp things (like sys objects) - but I can probably get help from a grown-up on the sysadmin team: I have discovered that the rumours about human sacrifice are baseless, and they will perform favours in return for beer.
This is also a good time to ask: just how many stored procs and functions are you allowed in SQL Server 2005?

Management Studio Disconnects With Error Msg 0, Level 11, State 0, Line 0
Nov 3, 2006I am trying to run the following:
select * from sysindexes
The operation begins and results are produced but after about 200 results, I get the error - Msg 0, Level 11, State 0, Line 0 - and it disconnects.
This is a DB moved (restored) from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005.
Any ideas would be appreciated. I am the "make do" DBA and not very good at it yet, I am afraid.

Performance Improves With Studio Query Window Open

Bit of a strange one here. We have a SQL Express instance running with one database which is accessed by a VB6 client application.
Performance between the application and the database isn't great, but bizarrely if you open a Query window from the Management Studio (against the database) the performance dramatically improves - to the extent that it is visually noticeable from within the application.
So, I'm thinking that the database connections being made by the application are taking longer because of instance name resolution or the like and with the Query window open this resolution is performed quicker.
Has anyone come across this situation? I can re-create it on several different computers each with their own Express instance and I've not found anything about this on the net.
Here's the connection string used by the application - I have tried various permutations of values to no avail:
Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Initial Catalog=SampleDB;Data Source=(local)sqlexpress;Trusted_Connection=yes

Sep 4, 2007I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features.
I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio?
I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional?
I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool.
How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase.
Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology.
My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn.

Query Formatting In SQL Management Studio
Feb 2, 2007I recently upgraded my SQL Server to 2005 and instead of the Enterprise Manager I am now using SQL Server Management Studio.
Does anyone know how to turn off query formatting in views?
In enterprise manager I use to be able to double-click the view and it would open an sql editor which left the code exactly how I formatted it (space, returns etc for ease of reading). Now in Management Studio, each time I modify a view it reformats it so it become confusing to build them.

I would like to know if it is possible to make a MDX query on a cube with parameters in Management Studio and if yes, how to define the parameters?
In fact, I have a quite big query which of course does not work and in Reporting Services, I get an error message which is not very clear :
Cannot set the command text for data set "Cube"
Error during processing of the CommandText expression of dataset "Cube"
So I would like to test my query in SSMS and correct directly.

I have created two instaces on the Database Engine and have managed to also create a linkedserver between the two instances.
Now I'm trying to query two tables from both instances and I'm getting a collation conflict error. I tried to change this on the Database's propertry to match the other one, but still getting an error, see below:-

2005 Management Studio Question
Jan 23, 2007In Enterprise Manager, (in Management| SQL Agent| Jobs) you are provided with a great view on the right pane showing many details of all the SQL Agent jobs on the server. This includes, whether it's enabled, scheduled, running, when it last run and when it will next run.
Is there any way to obtain a similar overview of SQL Agent jobs in SQL Server 2005 Management Studio?

Aug 9, 2007i would like to ask if there is a way to FILTER THE IPADDRESSES of users who wants to login the SQL Server Management Studio. right now, we are using Enterprise Edition of SQL Server 2005.
i just want to limit the users who can log in at Management Studio, the users know the password of SA, and i can't change the password coz we have deployed the programs with odbc connection using SA. so i thought of filtering the ipaddress of computers i want to grant access to SQL Server Management Studio, if its possible.

SQL Tools :: Query Editing In Management Studio?
Apr 24, 2015I've accidentally done something to my install of Management Studio that is making query editing very difficult. I must have used a weird key combination to enable some feature that is now opening an Intellisense like window with suggested keywords or column names. I've tried every option I can find to disable this and even tried all the <ctrl> key combinations from A-Z to try to turn this off. How to have the editor revert to the "default" behavior as installed?
I've received several replies about disabling Intellisense or changing the Intellisense options and I've already done this to no effect. I've also not installed any 3rd party tools. I was editing queries when the problem began and I think I had hit a <ctrl> or <alt> key combination key that started this problem.

Jun 30, 2005I'm trying to apply some security to my database, so i've created a role, added my user to the role and then set the security rights for the role. Everything work great, the security right behave exactly as defined....However, when I go back the the Permissions pages, the values that i've already set don't appear in the lists (the all still work). I am just starting to learn SQL 2005 Express. After opening the Management Studio Express, I right Click on the Databases node and create new database. then create a name etc. The problem is that when I click ok to create the new database, I get a warning saying that Input a filename. However when I click on filename (after filepath) it is greyed out and I cant add a filename.
Does anyone know how to remedy this?

Dec 1, 2006Found some bad behavior in the 2005 Management Studio Import and Export Wizard.
In the Select Source Tables and Views box, I selected multiple objects, and then clicked Edit Mappings.
The Transfer Settings dialog box appears, and states: "Define the settings that can be applied to all selected table transfers."
I selected the "Delete rows in existing destination tables" option to overwrite the existing data. But Management Studio DID NOT DELETE THE ROWS IN THE EXISTING TABLES. Instead, the records were appended to existing data, wreaking havoc on our month-end accounting system.
This happened multiple times, and occured even though the final screen confirmed that existing records would be deleted in each of the individual tables.

In order to manage and use SQL databases it seems I have to use SQL
Studio Mgt Tool. But, where is it? I can only see Configuration Tools,
but not any Mgt tool or DB Engine......
Maybe my installation is incomplete?

Apr 27, 2006I handle all licensing for our companies. I am trying to completely understand the licensing and want to insure if I approve the installation of Mgmt Studio 2005, that it is covered by SQL Developer licenses?

Bug With SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express
Jul 18, 2007Every time I try to remove 'condensed type' from the custom table view (working in database diagrams) the MSE crashes on me, as soon as I push the < button to remove it from the list of columns.
Is there a forum or place to post such a bug, or someone to send full details to? When it dies, it doesn't give me an option to send the information to MS.
