SQL 2005 Merge Repl Suddenly Stopped Working
Mar 28, 2006
Hello...
We have had Merge Replication working for the past few months (SQL 2005 to SQL Mobile) and suddenly today the replication URL that points to the SqlCESA30.DLL does not work. I have tried re-running the SQL Mobile virtual folder wizard a few times....resetting IIS and even a re-boot...and still the URL is not available.
Is there anything that might provide some clue as to why this has unexpectedly failed?
thanks for any help!

I'm in trouble again. I want to make merge replication between SS 2000 Enterprise and SS 2005 Express edition. 2000 will be publisher, 2005 will be subscriber. In addition I want to use push subsription at 2000 side, very last thing is it will be download only (I know how to make a merge rep. downloadonly, thanks god!). That's all I want to do.
I made a little search, it seems what I want can't be done automatically, using SMO or scripts is suggested. In one of other forums I saw "distibuter>=publisher>=subsriber" (refering sql server versions). Is it an incontestable truth that I cannot make SS 2000 a publisher where SS 2005 Express is subscriber?
How can I achieve my goal, isn't there anyway to make 2000 publisher for merge replication while a 2005 Express is subscriber?
Thanks

Hi Everybody !!
I have a problem with SQL mail on SQL 6.5 with SP 5a . I have created a job called as mailtest and is scheduled to run every morning .
The task was running successfully till last week when suddenly it stopped responding on some of the SQL 6.5 Servers .
When i stop the SQL Mail and start again through the Enterprise Manager , and then run the task , it shows as successful .
Every morning i have to do it to check whether the mailtest is O.K .
But the automated mailtest task has stopped suddenly . I have checked the MAPI profile and is correct as the same is configured on other servers on which my mailtest runs successful.
Can somebody guess what the problem could be ?
Thanks for your help in advance .
Regards
Ashish.

I'll start off by saying these questions were submitted to Microsoft and no
one can give us an answer without them doing a source code review. Their
response was "these are internal BCP scripts that are used by SQL"....yes, I
know that....that doesn't help to explain why the system created them. At
this point, I don't want my compary to pay support hours for Microsoft
personnel to learn what their software does.
--------------------
We've had merge publication in place for several years.
Last year, we added some tables/articles to publications.
After the upgrade from SQL Server 2000 SP4 Standard to SQL Server 2005 SP2
Standard, when the snapshot was run, the system created some new files that
had never existed before. Also, and more importantly, these files were only
created for the articles added after the initial snapshot was created.
Articles existing in the intial snapshot did not have these type of files
created.
Examples of these files for a SA_MOVE table that was added to an existing
publication:
MSmerge_contents_SA_MOVE.bcp
MSmerge_contents_SA_MOVE_forall.bcp
MSmerge_rowtrack_SA_MOVE90.bcp
sysmergesubsetfilters_SA_MOVE.bcp
sysmergesubsetfilters_SA_MOVE90.bcp
Also some new bcps created were:
MSmerge_contents90_forall.bcp
MSmerge_genhistory90.bcp
MSmerge_rowtrack90.bcp
sysmergesubsetfilters90.bcp
The system wanted to apply these files before it would start synchronizing
data so they had to be delivered to the subscriber. It appears it was the
sysmergesubsetfilters_ files that it wanted to apply. These are all 0 in
size and we do not have filter on(at least not as far as I know...see the
addmergearticle code below).
New databases created this year that had all of the articles defined in the
publication before the initial snapshot was taken did not get these
additional files created, nor did the system want to try to send files to the
subscriber before syncrhonization could begin.
This is an example of how an article had been cretead under SQL Server 2000
when adding a new database, before an initial snapshot is run:
exec sp_addmergearticle @publication = N'Last', @article = N'SA_MOVE',
@source_owner = N'dbo', @source_object = N'SA_MOVE', @type = N'table',
@description = null, @column_tracking = N'true', @pre_creation_cmd = N'drop',
@creation_script = null, @schema_option = 0x000000003000EFF1,
@article_resolver = null, @subset_filterclause = null, @vertical_partition =
N'false', @destination_owner = N'dbo', @verify_resolver_signature = 0,
@allow_interactive_resolver = N'false', @fast_multicol_updateproc = N'true',
@check_permissions = 0
This is an example of how an article was added under SQL Server 2000 to an
existing publication that already had the initial snapshot run:
exec sp_addmergearticle @publication = N'Last', @article = N'SA_MOVE',
@source_owner = N'dbo', @source_object = N'SA_MOVE', @type = N'table',
@description = null, @column_tracking = N'true', @pre_creation_cmd = N'drop',
@creation_script = null, @schema_option = 0x000000000000EFF1,
@article_resolver = null, @subset_filterclause = null, @vertical_partition =
N'false', @destination_owner = N'dbo', @auto_identity_range = N'false',
@verify_resolver_signature = 0, @allow_interactive_resolver = N'false',
@fast_multicol_updateproc = N'true', @check_permissions = 0,
@force_invalidate_snapshot = 1
A few questions:
Does anyone have an idea why the system created these files are part of the
2005 upgrade?
What is the real purpose of the files with names such as _forall.bcp ?
Thanks for any help/info on this,
Doug

Hi,
I'm just moving over one of our databases from SQL2000 to 2005. Everything is working fine, and all web sites are working, however I just can't seem to get xp_cmdshell to function on the 2005 server.
I have enabled xp_cmdshell, and when I run a stored procedure, which writes the contents of one column to a text file, it says "invalid object name". This table is definitely there, and is actually updated earlier on in the same SP, so permissions for that are fine.
This is the line causing the problem (if I take it out, the rest of the SP works no problems):
--write the text file
EXEC master.sys.xp_cmdshell 'bcp "SELECT newslettertext FROM mydatabase.dbo.newsletters" queryout D:ewslettertext extbody.txt -U -P -c'
Error = [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Invalid object name 'mydatabase.dbo.newsletters'.
SQLState = 37000, NativeError = 8180
Error = [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Statement(s) could not be prepared.
NULL
Could it be to do with permissions on the master.sys.xp_cmdshell? If so, wouldn't it give me a "permission denied" error?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

I am trying to set up a merge replication between SQL 2005 and SQL Express. When I try to apply the snapshot to the SQL Express database. I get the error "Can not access filepathSnapshot.pre due to error OS 3"
Does anyone know what OS error 3 applies to?
Also, when I try to place the snapshop in the default folder location say D:ReplicationData the create snapshot process will work. If I try to place the snapshot folder not in the default and in a UNC like this \serverIPReplicationData I get an access error. sqlAgent has access to the share, which is fully shared out. Any ideas?

I am running merge replication (SQL 2000 with SP2) with an anonymous pull subscription. The application vendor has come out with update that requires adding a table to a database. The vendor has created scripts that will add the table, as well as some stored procedures. If I apply the scripts to both servers and add the table as a new article to the publication, am I going to have to apply a snapshot of the entire database (which is very large)?
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
We have a client that has a large (5Gb) database replicated to 13 subscribers, the publisher is Sql 2005, the subscribers are Sql Express. The publication has as few filtered articles too. I have found that after several months of continuous running Replication Monitor is taking a long time to report history on each subscriber.
Do people tend to rebuild the indexes on the system merge replication tables on production servers, or should the standard replication jobs take care of this?
Thanks for your help

Publisher: SQL Server 2005 SP2
Subscriber: SQLExpress SP2
Merge pull replication
Merge process stopped uploading changes to the publisher. Downloading
changes to subscriber works fine. When record inserted/updated, reference is
saved into MSmerge_contents, generation incremented. Merge process on run
detects in which article change has been made. But when it stats to enumerate
changes the result is 0. Download part works. No errors and no data moving up
to the publisher.
I've checked the thread 'merge agent doesn't upload again!' In my case no errors been reported.
Please help. Thank you.

Hi, I have setup a replication between two servers. And sometimes due to network connection problem, I get error message like :
The subscription to publication 'pub_1' is invalid.
After 10 retries, if connection cannot be made successfully, the Merge Agent will stop running.
How can I start the Merger Agent automatically after it has been stopped?

Our stored procedure error handling is not working now but did before.
When a severity level 16 (Miscellaneous user error) occurs the batch (stored procedure) exits without processing the next statement which is the error check routine. This is a simple error processing routine and used to work. What could have changed?
I have searched books online and have found nothing on abnormal termination of a SQL batch. I would appreciate some help here.

I am having a real problem opening a database on a SQL server through EM. The DB is on the machine as I can use EM on another machine and login from there. However, when I try to login to the DB via EM on the actual server I cannot and get an error saying 'Connection failed. Check SQL Server registration properties'.
Even if I change the reg properties it still will not let me access the database, it just keeps giving the same error.
Has anyone seen something like this before?

I have a merge publication that I always create with a script but has now stopped working with what appears to be a complete server problem.
The actual command i am executing is a simple
sp_addpublication_snapshot
but it fails with
Msg 50000, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_add_jobstep_internal, Line 253
The current transaction cannot be committed and cannot support operations that write to the log file. Roll back the transaction.
Msg 3931, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_MSadd_repl_job_unsafe, Line 376
The current transaction cannot be committed and cannot be rolled back to a savepoint. Roll back the entire transaction.
I have tried recreating the database from scratch, renaming it, renaming the publication, even disabling the publications altogether but it makes no difference. There is nothing in the sql or event logs and I cant do any work until Ive got past it - help!
I am using SQL 2005 SP2 if that makes any difference.
Thanks

Hi,
I had a Database maintenance plan setup to do complete backup of my SQL Server 2000 database. Same thing was done for the transaction logs as well. And they had resulted in successful backups sometime ago.
But I have noticed that Backups are no longer happening. I cannot find the backup files where they are supposed to land. Some how, I cannot find any error messages relating why the backups are not getting created.
I do not know where I can look up the logs/reports of what possibly is going wrong. I have looked at the usual places and they are not there, for the times I have deliberately tried to submit the jobs.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

My MaintPlan 1 has stopped working.
Resetting the time to an hour in the future, does not start.
Tonight I'm going to stop and start MSSQL server.
If that does not start the MaintPlan 1, then I'll rebuild a new maint plan.
Is there any way to tell why it may have failed?
I've checked the error logs, the maint plan logs and NT 4.0 sys logs, all indicated the last backup date / time with no other relevant notations.

I've got a stored procedure in database A that calls the sp_start_job stored procedure in msdb as follows:
CREATE PROCEDURE xxxxx
WITH EXECUTE AS 'domainusername'
AS
EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_start_job B'jobname' ;
RETURN
The domainusername is the in the database sysadmin role and the owner of the job. To make this work originally, I had to change the msdb database to be trusted.
This worked for the past several months.
Now it doesn't work (perhaps after a reboot but not sure). The error I get is "The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'sp_start_job', database 'msdb', schema 'dbo'
I looked to make sure that the account had grant execute rights and it does. I tried setting it via GRANT statement and it was granted successfully yet the error still occurs. I've tried changing accounts and anything else I can think of to no avail.
Any ideas how to troubleshoot this issue. I've tried all the tricks I can think of.
Thanks - SM

I'm using query notifications and it worked fine as long as I just edited the data that the "query points to" (one table). That is, my graphical represenation of the data (in a gridview) was updated correctly with the new data 1ms after I changed it, just like it should.
When I inserted a new row to the table the query notification stopped working, meaning my gridview wasn't updated. Any idea of why? Also, after this, not even editing of the data made the query notification trigger so it must have totally stopped.
Thanks in advance

I had a Send email task linked to my Sequence Containers in my package and it was working fine. Everytime the container fails it would send an email to myself.
At some point all Failure constraints stopped working. Failure constraints work if I add brand new tasks, but with the existing tasks, they don't work. The Task which fails, turns red and execution stops. Next failure task is not executed.
I am not sure what triggered it to stop working. I cannot get anything on the log

Hi, I used to be able to debug stored procedures via Visual Studio.net 2003. However, this has stopped working. It does not produce an error just simply doesn't work anymore i.e. the breakpoints are by-passed.
I have the correct settings in the Debug configuration section. If any-one knows how to rectify this your help would be appreciated.
I have thought about re-installing the remote debugging functionality on the server. However, our Visual Studio.net discs are with a developer who is away at present.

I'm trying to retrieve native character data (SQL_WCHAR) through ODBC into an SQL_C_CHAR buffer using SQLBindCol and SQLFetch.
The database is SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition.
If I use DRIVER={SQL Server}, i.e., use SQLSRV32, everything gets converted properly.
If I use DRIVER={SQL Native Client}, i.e., use SQLCNLI, I apparently get garbage. This is true for ntext, nchar and nvarchar. I also have problems with xml, but I haven't gotten far enough to isolate what's going on with it.

We have a large number of clients attempting to replicate two publications on 2005 Express databases (2 publications subscribed to the one subscriber database) with our 2005 Server (9.00.3042.00 SP2 Standard Edition) and experiencing two significant problems:
1) Users experience the following message:
The Merge Agent failed after detecting that retention-based metadata cleanup has deleted metadata at the Subscriber for changes not yet sent to the Publisher. You must reinitialize the subscription (without upload).
This problem should not apparently occur with SQL Server 2005 (or 2005 Express) instances with SP2 applied. All clients experiencing this problem have SP2 installed as does our Server and the retention period is 30 days. The subscribers have been replicating well under that.
2) Replications never succeed after appearing to replicate/loop around for hours
This issue is the most critical as we have clients who have been installed and re-installed with new instances of SQL Server 2005 Express, new empty databases (on subscriber before snapshot extraction), and using fresh snapshots (less than an few hours old) which cannot successfully replicate.
Interestingly there is at least 1 instance where several computers are subscribed and successfully replicating the same database as another where replication refuses to succeed.
To test we have taken a republished database from another 2005 Server which is working fine and restored it to the same server as the one holding the database with which we are experiencing problems and subscribed to it. This test worked fine and replication of both publications went through fast and repeatedly without showing any signs of problem.
This indicates that the problem is perhaps data related as it appears localised to that database.
Below are two screenshots which may assist.
Screenshot 1 Shows that on the server side the replication attempts look like they are succeeding despite the fact that the subscriber end does not indicate success. Also the history indicates the the subscription has spent all it's time initialising and not merging any changes.
Screenshot 2 Shows a rogue process which has appears on many of the problem child subscribers. It shows a process running with no end time even though the job indicates failure in the message and even though other replication attempts appear to have succeeded after it. This process stays in the history showing that it is running even when I can find no corresponding process for it.
Can anyone suggest a further course of action/further testing/further information required which may assist?
This is extremely urgent and any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Hello All
I hope somebody can help. This is the second time I've seen this issue. The first time I thought it was a one off, but now I'm getting concerned.
I have two clients - one had Merge replication set up on a database that had a log log file that just grew and grew. The database was set to SIMPLE recovery. I could understand the log file growing if it was set up for transactional replication, but it wasn't transactional, just merge. Looking in sys.databasese the log_reuse column was set to REPLICATION.
I ran the sp_repldone stored proc on this database and all was well - I could shrink the log file down to a reasonable size. This server was SQL Server 2005, Service Pack 2.
Now I have yet another client who has a growing transaction log file. Low and behold the log_reuse for the database is set to REPLICATION again. This server has never had any type of replication set up at all!!!! The log file is still growing and DBCC OPENTRAN indicates undistributed transcations. This particular server is SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1.
Can someone PLEASE shed some light on what's going on here? Is there some kind of bug that I don't know about? Searching Goolgle Groups seems to indicate that other people have had this problem, and they have have to set up replication and run sp_repldone to resolve it, but that's surely uncalled for on a database that has never seen replication?
Thanks

It just does not work and all connections are dropped. After re-starting the service, everything is back working as normal. Please advise how this problem can be solved?
Another serious problem, after failing to stop the service, I decided to re-start the server. The SQL Server looks like just dead but looking at the service is stop and in the configuration manager SQL Server State "Change Pending....". Don't know what is wrong. Please kindly advise!

Hello:
Here is the scenario: I have a report in SSRS 2005 that uses an OLE DB connection to send a MDX query to an AS 2000 cube. The report has been working fine for weeks. When the report ran today, it returned the row and column metadata, but not the cell values.
I ran the MDX query separately in the SSRS query editor pane, and it returns all values properly. I was also able to perform the query using ProClarity, so it appears that the issue is between the result set and SSRS.
What would cause this to happen?
Thanks for your help!

Hi,
I have the following setup Merge replication with Web Synchronization:
Server: SQL Server 2005
Subscriber: SQL Server Express edition
The system uses parametrized filters based on HOST_NAME and I have selected 'Automatically define a partition and generate a snapshot when a new subscriber tries to synchronize'
To reduce the size of the initial snapshot I have selected to 'compress' the snapshot files.
It works fine in most of the cases but sometimes when I initialize a new subscriber, replication process fails with the error:

Replication-Replication Merge Subsystem: agent 25BCC8D2-968E-4CEE-B408-2DEF3210F682 failed. The Merge Agent failed to retrieve the snapshot schema script file '\db101BQ_REPL_SHAREuncDB101_BQDB_QA_BQ_WEB_REPL20070411090593dynsnapvalidation.tok'. Run the Snapshot Agent to regenerate the snapshot files for this publication.
If I regenerate the snapshot for the subscriber, and then replicate again it works fine. This is turning out to be an issue as I have to compress the snapshot files as they are huge.
And I cannot use 'Initializing a subscription without snapshot' due to this error: <http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/ShowPost.aspx?postid=1458147&siteid=1>
Help me
PS: (Applied SP2 Patch, but the problem still persists) and the process works fine if i use pusg subscription
For reference here is the t-sql subscription code, and the vb.net that initiates replication:

In a t-sql 2012 merge statement that is listed below, the insert statement on the merge statement listed below is not working. The update statement works though.
Merge test.dbo.LockCombination AS LKC1
USING
(select LKC.lockID,LKC.seq,A.lockCombo1,A.schoolnumber
from
[Inputtb] A
JOIN test.dbo.School SCH ON A.schoolnumber = SCH.type
JOIN test.dbo.Locker LKR ON SCH.schoolID = LKR.schoolID AND A.lockerNumber = LKR.number
[code]...
Thus would you tell me what I need to do to make the insert statement work on the merge statement listed above?

Hi all,
I'm trying delete metadata of a sql 2005 sp1 subscriber from a sql 2005 sp1 merge publication, but is not working, the "retention" parameter for the publication is 999 and this is the code I'm using:
declare @num_genhistory_rows int,
@num_contents_rows int,
@num_tombstone_rows int
declare @retcode smallint
--select count(*) from msmerge_contents
-- records before 2,633,848
exec @retcode = sys.sp_mergemetadataretentioncleanup @num_genhistory_rows OUTPUT , @num_contents_rows OUTPUT , @num_tombstone_rows OUTPUT
select retcode =@retcode
select num_genhistory_rows =@num_genhistory_rows
select num_contents_rows=@num_contents_rows
select num_tombstone_rows=@num_tombstone_rows
--select count(*) from msmerge_contents
-- records after 2,633,8
Results :
retcode
0
num_genhistory_rows
0
num_contents_rows
0
num_tombstone_rows
0
Has omebody any idea why this is not working ?
I did check "sp_mergemetadataretentioncleanup " and I note that is using a function to calculate the limit date, but I could not testing because it give me the below error :
declare @curdate datetime, @cutoffdate datetime
select @curdate = getdate()
select @cutoffdate = null
-- find max retention of all pubs the article belongs to.
-- add some safety margin to compensate for different clock speeds
select @cutoffdate = min(sys.fn_subtract_units_from_date(isnull(retention,0), retention_period_unit, @curdate))
from dbo.sysmergepublications where
pubid in (select pubid from dbo.sysmergearticles where nickname = 5088000)
select @cutoffdate
and this is the message error:
Msg 4121, Level 16, State 1, Line 7
Cannot find either column "sys" or the user-defined function or aggregate "sys.fn_subtract_units_from_date", or the name is ambiguous.
I looked this function but I didn't find it.
any help will be appreciated !
