SQL 2005 Mobile Edition Error: The Buffer Pool Is Too Small Or There Are Too Many Open Cursors.

Feb 2, 2006

I am working with merge replication. The db server is running Windows 2003 Server Std x64 with SQL 2005 Std x64. The IIS server is running Windows 2003 Server Stx x86. The clients are Windows Mobile 5.0 running SQL 2005 Mobile.

I have previously been able to get the test client to initialize a subscription to the publication. I made some changes recently and added about 7 tables, bringing the total articles to 104. Some of the articles have unpublished columns, which means they are using vertical filtering as well. This publication is also using parameterized filters. During publication creation, there are several warnings that "Warning: column 'rowguid' already exists in the vertical partition".

The snapshot agent runs without any errors. When the client attempts to initialize, I get the error "The buffer pool is too small or there are too many open cursors."

My question is 2 part. First, what is causing this error, and second, how can it be resolved?

Synchronization Error:The Buffer Pool Is Too Small Or There Are Too Many Open Cursors.

Mar 15, 2006

Hello:

I tried to synchronize the SQL 2000 database with the SQL mobile server on PDA with SQL server management studio from SQL 2005. I got the error as €œThe buffer pool is too small or there are too many open cursors. HRESULT 0x80004005 (25101) €?. The SQL database file size is 120MB.

I create the .sdf file on PDA with the following C# code:

string connString = "Data Source='Test.sdf'; max database size = 400; max buffer size = 10000;";
SqlCeEngine engine = new SqlCeEngine(connString);
engine.CreateDatabase();

I think the 400MB max database size and 10000KB max buffer size are big enough to hold that SQL database data and I have already successfully synchronized my PDA with another smaller SQL server database file. I have been kept trying and searching this for couple of days and still can not figure it out.

Moreover, the synchronization always stops at the same table.

Please help and a lot of thanks in advance.

SqlCeConnection Failing To Open A Connection To The SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition

Apr 15, 2008

Good day,

I am writing an application using VB.Net 2005 for the Windows CE 5.0 device and it is connecting to a SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition Database.
The trouble I'm having is establishing a connection to a SQL Server Mobile database on the device.

Here is the code I am using:

Code Snippet
Public gConnectionString As String = "Data Source=Program FilesMobAppMobDB.sdf;Persist Security Info=False;"

Code Snippet

Imports System.Data.SqlServerCe

Public Class DBManager

Public Shared gSQLCEConnection As SqlCeConnection

Public Shared Function OpenDB() As Boolean

If gSQLCEConnection IsNot Nothing Then

Throw New InvalidOperationException("Connection already open.")
End If
gSQLCEConnection = New SqlCeConnection(gConnectionString)
Try

gSQLCEConnection.Open() 'Error occurs here
Return True
Catch ex As SqlCeException

MsgBox(ex.Message & vbCrLf & ex.HResult & vbCrLf & ex.NativeError & vbCrLf & ex.Source)
Return False
End Try
End Function

In the immediate window I recieve the following messages:

A first chance exception of type 'System.IO.FileNotFoundException' occurred in mscorlib.dll

A first chance exception of type 'System.IO.FileNotFoundException' occurred in mscorlib.dll

A first chance exception of type 'System.UnauthorizedAccessException' occurred in mscorlib.dll

A first chance exception of type 'System.IO.FileNotFoundException' occurred in mscorlib.dll

A first chance exception of type 'System.UnauthorizedAccessException' occurred in mscorlib.dll

A first chance exception of type 'System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeException' occurred in System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll

I believe that the first few lines are caused by the icons/pictures that I have included with my app, but the SqlCeException line occurs when the connection to the .SDF file is trying to be established.

Here is the exception output:

Message: "" (Blank)
HResult: -2147024882
NativeError: 0
Source: SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition ADO.NET Data Provider

Programs under Remove Programs on the PDA are:
Microsoft .NET CF 2.0 ENU-String R...
Microsoft .NET Compact Framework...
Microsoft SQL Client

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact...
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact...
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact...
Microsoft SQLCE 2.0
Microsoft SQLCE 2.0 Dev

Any ideas on what could be stopping this connection from being established? It was working before but all of a sudden just stopped. I have warm booted, cold booted, and rebuilt with no luck and also checked that SQL Query Analyzer is not running on the PDA and that the connection string is valid.
The call to OpenDB occurs in the form_load of the startup object.

Thanks in advance,

Leon

SQL 2012 :: Backups And Buffer Pool

Jan 23, 2015

I am sure I have seen in the past in a monitoring tool that PLE drops off to 0 whenever we do a backup. I was doing some reading around this however and found something that said backups use a different portion of memory external to the buffer pool (minmax settings).

Is this correct and how can I tell how much memory will be required for a backup?

Tyring To Figure Out What's In The Buffer Pool

Apr 16, 2007

Hi, I'm trying to chase down some bottlenecks, and am currently tyring to figure out what's actually in our data buffer pool.

We've recently upgraded to SQL Server 2005 (sp2a); there's 4GB memory on the box (an active/passive cluster) with the /3GB switch set. I'm working on the learning curve for

sys.dm_os_buffer_descriptors and sys.allocation_units [and boy I sure wish SSMS's query windows wouldn't "copy" in HTML]. Based on BOL and some poking around, I've come up with the following query to list pages used within a given database:

SELECT

count(*) cached_pages_count

,isnull(obj.name, '<unidentified object>') TableName

,obj.index_id

,ind.name

from sys.dm_os_buffer_descriptors bd

left outer join (select

object_name(object_id) name

,object_id

,index_id

,allocation_unit_id

from sys.allocation_units au

inner join sys.partitions p

on au.container_id = p.partition_id -- 2005 compatible, but maybe not in future versions

) obj

on bd.allocation_unit_id = obj.allocation_unit_id

left outer join sys.indexes ind

on ind.object_id = obj.object_id

and ind.index_id = obj.index_id

where bd.database_id = db_id()

group by obj.name, obj.object_id, obj.index_id, ind.name

order by cached_pages_count desc

This would appear to list how many pages are sitting in our buffer pool for which objects for the currently selected database. The thing is, for our "main" database, the vast majority of pages fall in that "unidentified" bucket -- their allocation_unit_ids are not in sys.allocation_units (or tempdb, I checked there just in case).

My question is: what are these pages? Where is this data coming from? Might these somehow be related with our execution/query cache, which appears to be larger than our data cache?

As may be obvious, this is all new to me, and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Will Buffer Pool Extensions Have Benefit If Already On SSDs?

Sep 24, 2015

I am reading about Buffer Pool Extensions, and how it stores data pages on media like an SSD, to speed up retrieval in future. Would this be useless if my mdf files are already on SSD media? At most, I envisage it meaning that instead of grabbing the data from the mdf, it would grab the data from the buffer pool extension drive, but if they are both on SSD's, I'm not sure of how much return I would see.

Has any user decided to use BPE when their data is already on SSD's, and have they noticed any improvement in these cases?

DB Engine :: Buffer Pool Extensions On Shared SSD

Oct 9, 2015

Extending the buffer pool onto an SSD drive that is shared ? For instance, if we had a mirrored system drive(The C logical partition) on SSD's, can we use the remaining space on that mirrored partition to extend my SQL 2014 buffer pool ? I understand that in this scenario, there is some competition for the I/O throughput between SQL Server's extended buffer pool and the OS. We intend to have the pagefile on a different disk, other than this specific SSD.

SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition On Small Business Server 2003 R2

Dec 13, 2006

I have an SBS 2003 server that is running SQL 2000 standard edition which was recently upgraded to Small Business Server 2003 R2.

I have installed SQL 2005 workgroup edition on the SBS 2003 R2 server which acts both as an AD server and Exchange server. I installed SQL 2005 for the purpose of using SQL 2005 for my sharepoint services on the Small Business Server R2.

Now I have SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 workgroup edition installed, but I'm unsure whether I can uninstall the SQL 2000 and how to know whether the sharepoint instance is running in SQL 2005 or SQL 2000?

Additionally, I have some MSDE's running for WSUS and Server Reporting which are installed by the Small Business Server installation.

Which tools should I use to become familiar with identifying the databases and which version of the database engine is used for which database regardless of whether it is a SQL instance or a MSDE instance.

How can I identify which SQL versions are not in use and whether I can uninstall if not needed.

Thanks!!

SQL Mobile 2005 Replication - SQL Mobile DLL Could Not Be Loaded - Error 28559

Jun 15, 2006

I am migrating a pocket PC application from VS 2003 to VS 2005 and a few weeks ago I hit the following problem when replicating

A SQL Mobile DLL could not be loaded. Reinstall SQL Mobile. [ DLL Name=sqlceca30.dll]

Scanning forums for help I saw that other people had had this problem and one

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/aspnet_answers/NETFrameworkCompactFramework/Feb2006/post25814466.asp

suggested that this problem could be circumvented by getting the replication object early and then continuously using the same object for subsequent replications.

I did this and it works a lot better now but ever so often I get another error which is

Native Error 28559 SQL Mobile encountered problems when opening the database

My only option at this point is to stop and start the application which cures the problem.

Memory Usage Of SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition

Jan 2, 2007

Hi forum readers,

we are working on a release 2.0 mobile solution right now. In our version 1.0 we did not have to worry about memory issues as our application was the only application running on our target devices (e.g. T-Mobile MDA Compact II Pocket PCs, WM2005).
Now we need to share the available memory with others. As our application relies on its SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition database we are wondering about memory usage of that server.

We know that a Pocket PC divides its memory into Storage and Program. If our application uses a 5 MB database and 1.5 MB for DLLs and it's exe-file. These files reside in the storage space when not loaded. When the application starts up it is loaded in the program memory. What happens to the 5 MB database file? Is is loaded into Program memory as well? Are only portions of that file loaded? Or is nothing loaded at all?

Does anyone have a deeper insight into that server an can answer my questions.

Best regards,
Tobias

SQL CE 3.0 SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition Database Password Problem

Dec 5, 2006

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could help me as this is a bit of a puzzle.

I have created a database using a password, the create table scripts are executed successfully using the connection string however when I try and use the same connection string to insert some data into the database an error is produced, with the following message 'The specified password does not match the database password'.

I have opened the database using the SQL Server 2005 Management Studio and provide the password and I can access the database without a problem.

When the connection object is first instantiated all the Connection String property, the connStr variable and the modifiedConnStr are all correct (by this I mean that the data source and the password are present). However when the connection object is accessed again the Connection String property and the connStr variable are both set incorrectly (by this I mean that the password= section of the string is missing) however the modifiedConnStr is set correctly (by this I mean that the password= section is present in the string).

The connection object does not get set in between creating and accessing the connection object.

I have resorted to using no password, however I really need to be able to use a password.

Here is a copy of the connection string I am using (Copied directly from the quick watch window):

"Data Source = '\Program Files\Application\DataBase\MyDatabase.sdf'; password="Pa55word";"

I am sorry this a little long winded however I would like to provide as much information as possible. I hope someone can help me with this problem.

Thank you for reading.

Error: The Buffer Manager Failed To Create A New Buffer Type

Apr 28, 2006

Hi

I have a master package that executes a series of sub packages run from a SQL Agent job. One of those sub packages has been stable for a week, running at least once per day, but it just failed despite having been run once already today with the same set of input data.

There were a series of errors showing in the event log for the Execute Package Task starting with "Buffer Type 15 had a size of 0 bytes.", then "The buffer manager failed to create a new buffer type.", then "The Data Flow task cannot register a buffer type. The type had 32 columns and was for execution tree 3.", then "The layout failed validation." and finally "Error 0xC0012050 while loading package file "C:[Package].dtsx". Package failed validation from the ExecutePackage task. The package cannot run.".

SQLIS.com reports the constant for the error code as DTS_E_REMOTEPACKAGEVALIDATION ( http://wiki.sqlis.com/default.aspx/SQLISWiki/0xC0012050.html ).

I then ran the package on my dev machine in BIDS and it worked fine, so I re-ran the job on the server and this time that package executed ok, but another one fell over but did not put anything in the event log.

Does any one have any idea what happened?

TIA . . . Ed

Need your clarification on this,
