Failed install on several Win 2003 Ent Ed., 32bit servers both named and default instances, both upgrades and direct installed versions. Why would MS put out such a riddle?
Error Message is " A recently applied update, KB921892, failed to install.
Also, confoundingly, the error log for the hotfix indicates
""9.00.3042.00 while the update version is: 9.00.2047.00."
But the version display on the properties of one of the servers is:
"Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2) "
Any help or comments are deeply appreciated, as the seems to be impacting DB Maintenance Plans, etc...
I am continually prompted to download & install this SP by the windows update utility but it always fails to install it. I have XP SP2. No error msg is provided. I do not have ACT! installed. I do have Oracle 10g Expr. Ed installed. Competitive jealousy?
I found this online:
Important notes about the cumulative hotfix package €¢ You must enable the SQL Server Management Object (SMO) extended stored procedures and the SQL Server Distributed Management Object (SQL-DMO) extended stored procedures before you install the cumulative hotfix package.
Where does one enable SMO & SQL-DMO?
I looked in the summary log file in the Hotfix directory and it says that the problem is that SQL Express cant be started. See below.
I went into the SQL Configuration Mgr and tried to start it and it fails to start. No reason given. Now what?

I'm pretty lost here - does anyone know how to solve this problem?
I'm having many many issues installing sql server management tools. i had visual studio 2005 installed first, but uninstalled and sql related things before trying to install sql server management tools again - i also deleted the program files/microsoft sql server/ folder so there are no references.
Firstly the system configuration check gives me a warning that the system doesn't meet the recommended hardware requirements - this is wrong... i've got 2.33Ghz dual core + 1gb of ram...
I select just management tools + client connectivity to install and click next -> the setup support files/native client/owc11 etc all install fine but workstation components etc fail and the setup log appears to either be empty and not available and MSXML6 fails... after clicking finish the installer appears to crash - : "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"... I have tried all sorts of variations on this install and have had no problems in the past - please help!

Hi, i have a clean install of VB2005 Express and it's accompanying SQL Server 2005 Express (yes i'm new to .net).
After installation i ran Windows Update and it found about 40mb of updates including SP1 for SQL Server. All installed correctly up to a reboot point, after which it continued with the update process.
When it reached SP2 (for SQL Server) it tried to install but just says "Updates were unable to be successfully installed" and "The following updates were not installed: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (KB 921896)".
Now i have a permanent icon in my system tray which when clicked tries to do the install with the same result.
During the attempted install my floppy drive 'buzzes' a couple of times.
I'm running an AMD3000+ (64bit) cpu with Windows 2000 Pro SP4
As mentioned in another post (on the VB Install forum) my MyDocuments folder is on a networked pc which has caused other non related problems, not sure if this could be responsible for the error. It would seem unlikely as SQL SP1 installed without any errors.
I've gone through all of the treads about this and still cannot seem to get my application working. If anyone can help me with this it would be just GREAT!
Client Error: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connection to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default setting SQL Server does not allow remote connections.(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 Connection string is not valid)
Client is Remote
Yes I can Ping the Server Yes I can telnet the server
Application is a Visual basic express Windows app
Client is running SQLEXPRESS Can Connect to Server with MSSME Both Server and Client are in the same workgroup
i like to use my Excel pivot from other domain, but I always get the error message "Cannot find repository". I tried a ping on IP of analysis server, no problem. The connection string includes the IP adress as well. Anybody knows the clue ?
Hi, I'm using VS2008, VB.NET and local cache sync with a remote SQL'05.
Some local (SQL CE) table updates fail eithout raising an error, even though the query works through the data set designer. Is there a way to trace / debug the execution of the query in teh SQL CE engine?
Hi.A question I have is with regard to the use of views with SQL2000. IfI have a view called "A_view" and used in the following manner;----------------SELECT ...FROM A_ViewWHERE ....UNIONSELECT ....FROM A_ViewWHERE .....-----------------is the view computed twice? Ideally if the view is computationallyexpensive I would rather it was only computed once. Also this would be preferred for data consistency. Is there a way to ensure the view is only computes once?Regards JC.......
I am importing an excel spreadsheet into SQL Server 2000. The dts package runs perfectly when you execute it under the Local Package pane.
My problem is when i schedule a job to execute the DTS package giving me the same error. I can only successfully execute the package under local Packages. Under Jobs i receive this error:

Hey all. right now I've been spinning my wheels for almost 2 days on a problem with c# 1.1/sqlserv 2005...
I have a dataset that's filled with data that I'm trying to write to a database, I've ensured that the dataset is fine.
I do a transaction to write the code to the table, an insert command, and an update command.
then commit the transaction
Everything seems to work fine, but when I go look at the table, it doesn't actually write any rows!
The weird thing is deletion of the rows works fine on the same table.
I look at the sqlserver tracer and watch it do the deletion on the table, skip right over the insert statements (ie: no insert statements show up whatsoever in the tracer) then commit the transaction.
If anyone has ever heard of something like this happening i would really appreciate some advice. I'm trying to be as specific as I can about the problem, and I've been spinning my wheels for almost 2 days without avail.
I've tried making other tables and writing to them, getting the same results. I think it's somehow not referencing everything correctly but again, everything seems like it's fine.
I've been handed a SQL Server that is used as an MIS source. There are 4 databases that carry out the task of importing data from various sources, then manipulting that data, and offering the data for reporting purposes.
The vendor has also created several other databases (of which there are also 4), but no-one in my company seems to know the purpose of these dbs.
In the logs, there are approximately 8/9 messages per second - not every second, but numberous seconds per minute - stating....
Starting up database 'db_name'.
... each time, all 4 of the mysterious dbs appear.
I've checked the spid that is running this job this morning, and it seems to be NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM connected to one of the original 4 report databases.
Does this have any affect on the performance of the server, or the specific db attached to the user?
I have a table with 3 columns , let say (PatientIDÂ int, AppointmentDate date, PatientName varchar(30))
My source data looks in below way..
PatientID       AppointmentDate     PatientName  1                01/01/2012         Tom  2                01/10/2012         Sam  3                02/15/2012         John
I need output in below way..
PatientID       AppointmentDate     PatientName  1                01/01/2012         Tom   (actual patient record)  null             01/10/2012         Tom  null             02/15/2012         Tom  null             01/01/2012         Sam  2                01/10/2012         Sam    (actual patient record)  null             02/15/2012         Sam   null             01/01/2012         John  null             01/10/2012         John  3                02/15/2012         John    (actual patient record)
I need t-sql to get above output. Basically the appointment dates are repeatedly assigned to each patient but only difference is patientid will be not null for actual patient record. Â Create table sample (PatientIDÂ int null, AppointmentDate date null, PatientName varchar(30) null)
Here is my query which lists all orders for products supplied by Supplier-3. A typical Query on the Northwind database i wrote is like this..
Select * FROM [Order Details] WHERE ProductID in (Select ProductID From Products where SupplierID = 3)
The subquery in Red was used in multiple places in one of my Stored Procedures..
So what i thought was - use a temp table to store the resultset from this subquery, and then use the temp table instead of querying the Products table everywhere..
My Query looked something like this..
Declare @ProductIDs TABLE (ProductID int)
INSERT INTO @ProductIDs Select ProductID From Products where SupplierID = 3
Select * FROM [Order Details] WHERE ProductID in (Select ProductID FROM @ProductIDs)
Well, I expected an increase in performance with the latter approach, but seems my Stored Procedure is taking more time with the second solution..
Would be glad to see ne explanation on this behavior..
I am using the SqlDependency to notify me of data changes in a table. However, as soon as I start it, the OnChange event fires over and over even though no data has changed.
Essentially All I want to do is be notified when records are inserted into a table. I am able to get another example to work using a Service Broker Queue and a sql query of WAITFOR ( RECEIVE CONVERT(int, message_body) AS msg FROM QueueMailReceiveQueue ) However I would prefer not to use a queue for once my messages have been read they are taken off the queue and I would rather control that manually.
Any help with getting SqlDependency to notify my app when records are added and not over and over when the data has changed would be great.
SQL Server Express update KB921896 fails to install with error code 00002b2. I've tried this update several times with no luck. HELP offered is no help. Can't find this error code, and there is no text with the code.
I have implemented an SSAS stored procedure for dynamic security and I call this stored procedure to obtain the allowed set filter. To my supprise, the stored procedure is being called repeatedly many times (more than 10) upon establishing the user session. Why is this happening?
We've got a strange problem. We are running on SQL 2000 SP4. Our structure uses database pairs, we have a Current and a History database so old records that don't change and aren't needed very often are only loaded into memory when needed.
The following query (the names have been changed) deletes the quote from the current database when the order raised from the quote has been moved into the history.
Code Snippet DELETE FROM t_CurrentUnpaid FROM db_Mule_History.dbo.t_History INNER JOIN t_Quote ON db_Mule_History.dbo.t_History.uid = t_Quote.uid INNER JOIN t_CurrentUnpaid ON t_Quote.uid_Parent = t_CurrentUnpaid.uid where t_CurrentUnpaid.uid_cont != -2
This query runs fine on 4 identical database pairs, on the 5th pair it fails. All these pairs are on the same server, with the same permissions and the exact same structure. Only the data would differ
The error returned is: Internal server error 8624 level 16 state 1 line 1
We have looked at MS articles, but all that I can find are about bugs fixed in SP1, 2, 3 and 4. Nothing post SP4 that we are running.
When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.
How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?
Currently, if I run this query:
SELECT @@version
I get the following:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)
After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.
Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:

I am trying to import Access reports using Visual Studio 2005 and Access 2007. SQL Server 2005 with Reporting Services is also installed. I select Reports in the Solution Explorer and then Import Reports... Microsoft Access and browse to my Access database. After I select the database I see it open briefly as if it is trying to import the reports but then Access quickly closes and a error pops up: "You already have the database open." I have checked and double checked and the database is not open. I have even tried several different databases and the same errror occurs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
We have a large number of clients attempting to replicate two publications on 2005 Express databases (2 publications subscribed to the one subscriber database) with our 2005 Server (9.00.3042.00 SP2 Standard Edition) and experiencing two significant problems:
1) Users experience the following message:
The Merge Agent failed after detecting that retention-based metadata cleanup has deleted metadata at the Subscriber for changes not yet sent to the Publisher. You must reinitialize the subscription (without upload).
This problem should not apparently occur with SQL Server 2005 (or 2005 Express) instances with SP2 applied. All clients experiencing this problem have SP2 installed as does our Server and the retention period is 30 days. The subscribers have been replicating well under that.
2) Replications never succeed after appearing to replicate/loop around for hours
This issue is the most critical as we have clients who have been installed and re-installed with new instances of SQL Server 2005 Express, new empty databases (on subscriber before snapshot extraction), and using fresh snapshots (less than an few hours old) which cannot successfully replicate.
Interestingly there is at least 1 instance where several computers are subscribed and successfully replicating the same database as another where replication refuses to succeed.
To test we have taken a republished database from another 2005 Server which is working fine and restored it to the same server as the one holding the database with which we are experiencing problems and subscribed to it. This test worked fine and replication of both publications went through fast and repeatedly without showing any signs of problem.
This indicates that the problem is perhaps data related as it appears localised to that database.
Below are two screenshots which may assist.
Screenshot 1 Shows that on the server side the replication attempts look like they are succeeding despite the fact that the subscriber end does not indicate success. Also the history indicates the the subscription has spent all it's time initialising and not merging any changes.
Screenshot 2 Shows a rogue process which has appears on many of the problem child subscribers. It shows a process running with no end time even though the job indicates failure in the message and even though other replication attempts appear to have succeeded after it. This process stays in the history showing that it is running even when I can find no corresponding process for it.
Can anyone suggest a further course of action/further testing/further information required which may assist?
This is extremely urgent and any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Is there any way to measure bandwith usage during merge replication between sql server 2005 and sql server mobile 2005 running on a cradled wm5 mobile device.
Attaching the windows performance monitor to the network connection established over usb would work although I was wondering if there was something specific for this case integrated into Sql server 2005 / sql server mobile 2005 / Sql server management studio / third party tools that i could use ?
I have created a database using VB Express 2005 express edition and I have created number of tables and SP's etc.
I am trying to use the database diagram tool but I get an error stating that the database doesn't have a valid dbo. I say yes to the prompt about making myself a valid dbo but I then get a message stating that I do not have permissions to imprersonate the dbo.

I am update/inserting records threw a web form in vb.net. I need to insert 'NULL' into my microsoft sql server database. I am not talking about the below line of code where website is the name of my paramater. If i do that it will just place a blank into that field in the database. If i dont enter anything into that textbox I want it to to say NULL in that field. So if I go into the actual table in the SQL Server Management Studio and look at the website field of the recored I just added or updated and did not type anything into the web site textbox it needs to say NULL. I also tried the second line of code but that places a single quote in front and behind NULL. So the field will have the value 'NULL'. website.value = txtwebsite.text.tostirng if txtwebsite.text ="" then website.value ="NULL" end if The reason why I need the NULL there is because I bind the website filed to a hyperlink template in a gridview. The actual text of the hyperlink is bound to PAYER which is a name of a insurance payer but the navigateto is bound to the website field. If i do not enter any data into the website field and it stays as NULL, then when my gridview is loaded, payers that dont have a website will not be underlined and user wont have the option to click on them since there is no value for the navigateto. But if i use my form to update/add a payer and leave the website textbox blank in puts a blank into that field in my database and when it loads that new row into the gridview the PAYER is underlined and u can click on it but it will just take u to the web site is unavailable page. So is there anyway to actaull have NULL placed into a filed and not just blank space
I am out of brain cells. I can not figure out how to upgrade instances of sql express to sql 2005 or even add an instance of sql 2005. I have installed/upgraded everything else (SSMS, etc.) to SQL 2005. I am dazed and confused. I don't even know where to start in explaining what I have tried and done. I have 303 log files going back to 3/27/2007 from various attempts. Where do I start in figuring this debacle out???
Just installed SQL Server 2005 and tested my old VS 2005 ASPnet websites, which were connected toSQL Server 2000 databases before. All my websites were created for local HTTP applications, coded with a connection string with User ID and Password. The SQL Server 2000 was configured as mixed authentication (i.e. with User ID and Password). These websites worked very well with SQL Server 2000 database server.Testing my old VS 2005 websites with SQL Server 2005 database, showed a 'Login failed for a User ''.' error msgalthough the 'Test Connection' on VS 2005 design showed a perfect query for e.g. a GridView control. I have assured that the UserID/Password were correct for Management Studio Security object'slogin and Database Security's user. The server instance was configured with mixed authentication mode. One thing I am not sure of is, when clicking the Management Studio icon, a Connection dialog showed up, asking for a Windows or MIxed authentication? I just stayed with the Windows authentication. What does the authenticationmode have anything to do with the VS 2005 website connection? Should I change to mixed authetnication mode?TIA,Jeffrey
