SQL 2005 SP2 - Unexpected Results With Snapshot Replication - Should Get An Error
Jun 25, 2007
I am using snapshot replication to copy data from one database to another. I truncate the destination table first. The publisher and the subscriber are different databases on the same server. The data turns into 1 unrecognizable row.
Here is what the source table looks like:
displayTypeID, displayType
1, Title List Formats
2, Title Details
3, Title List Export
4, Pricing Notes
5, clone Mask 001
6, clone Mask 002
7, clone Mask 004
8, clone Mask 008
9, hide From Admin
10, not Common Attr
11, Insert Title
12, title Types
The resulting data looks like this:
DisplayType, displayTypeId
, 1660953600
I see no errors in replication and nothing in the source table looks like bad data that could cause such a malady. I see the problem on two different servers now and identified the source of the problem, the column order is reversed in the source and destination tables. The data types do not even match so I would at the very least expect an error from bcp.
I have setup merge replication which successfully synchronizes with a group of desktop users using SQL Compact Edition.
However now I have setup Article Filters and when I attempt to regenerate the snapshot I get the following error:
Invalid column name 'rowguid'.
Failed to generate merge replication stored procedures for article 'AssignedCriteria'.
When I look at publication properties at the Articles page.. All my tables have the rowguid uniqueidentifier successfully added to tables and selected as a compulsory published column, apart from the table above "AssignedCriteria".. Even when I attempt to select this column in the article properties page and press ok, when I come back it is deselected again. ( The Rowguid column is however physically added to the table)
I have scripted the publication SQL and then totally reinstalled from scratch, including the database but for some reason it doesn't like this table. I remove the article filters, but still this "rowguid" is never "selected" in article properties.
We are using Uniqueidentifiers in other columns as well for historical reasons, but this doesn't appear to be a problem in other tables..
We are getting unexpected results from the following update statement when it is executed on SQL Server 2005.
The strange thing is that we get duplicated values for QM_UID (although when run under SQL Server 2000 we don't get duplicated values)
Can anyone explain why this happens or suggest another way of populating this column without using a cursor or adding a temporary autoincrement column and copying the values over?
declare @NextID int;
set @NextID = 1;
update tmp set QM_UID=@NextID, @NextID = @NextID + 1;
select QM_UID, count(*) from tmp group by QM_UID having count(*) > 1 order by QM_UID
-- NB: The number of rows that must be added to tmp before this problem will occur is machine dependant
-- 100000 rows is sufficient on one of our servers but another (faster) server doesn't show the error
-- at 100000 rows but does at 1000000 rows.

I'm currently receiving the following error message whilst attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on Windows Server 2003 (32 Bit): Error 29528. The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Installing performance counters. The error is: The system cannot find the file specified.
This server already has an install of SQL Server 2000 as the default instance. I'm attempting to install a new named instance of SQL Server 2005.

You can ignore this and it will complete the installation, but subsequently trying to patch with SP2 will fail on the same sections - Hotfix.exe crashes whilst attempting to patch Database Services, Integration Services and Client Components (3 separate crashes).
I've removed SQL Server 2005 elements and tried to re-install, but it's not improved the situation.
I am attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition onto a Windows XP Pro SP2 machine, but unfortunately each time that I attempt to install I receive an error message in the summary log as follows:

The error is : Fatal error during installation. Error Number : 29528
There is probably a simple solution for the issue but unfortunately I am unaware of what it is? I can€™t tell if the issue is specific to registry settings, security, file types, etc€¦ The information below surrounds the error w/in the log, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?

I have a "merge" publication created, with only Procedures, Views and Functions. (Note I have other merge publications that replicate the tables from the same database). I keep getting the same error (see -below) on various procedures. I cannot find anything wrong with the procedures themselves. I also checked the offending procedure by removing it from the publication and compiling it in the database...it works fine. None of my other publications (all tables) encounter this error. * I have 3 others.
My version of SQL is 9.00.1399.06
Here is the message I am getting. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Note I changed the proc name due to client restrictions.

I'm running SQL 7.0 SP3 on two different machines (one with additional hotfixes). I'm taking a nightly snapshot of imported data on Server1 and pushing it out to another SQL 7.0 server on our network, Server2. All but one table is copied successfully. On the final table, I receive the message, "The process could not bulk copy into table '"%"'." Error Information Category: Data Source, Source: Server2, Number 4813.
Full error message: "Expected the text length in data stream for bulk copy of text, ntext, or image data."
I've looked up 4813, but it's pretty ambiguous/generic. Also, when I SELECT from Server1 and INSERT INTO Server2 in the QA, I receive no errors. Does anyone have any insight?
i am getting the below error while applying running the Synchronization agent for the Subscriber. I have created replication topology with one central server and one subscriber. Here central server has windows server 2003 and subscriber has windows XP. Both are having SQL server 2005. I am having trouble setting up my Pull Subscription and I am new to replication.
I have several servers hosting a databased website that will be the same, except for user input and traffic. Quite simply, I need to copy most tables, SPs and data from network to network. I can't use FTP/Web synch ... as I mentioned the networks do not touch eachother or the internet.
On server Web1, it was easy to create a Publication called Pub via the wizard for my database: TheDB. Then on Web1, again, I added a Subscription to the Publication, indicating my second server, Web2, and the same database name: TheDB (I have already backed up and restored TheDB to all my servers). Here's one of the sp's I ran on Web1:
I copied the snapshot folder, ie. 20070709134423, onto CD and moved it into Web2's default replication folder, but I always receive: cannot connect to Distibutor. I've tried using an Alias, as well, but don't understand exactly how I should point that either. I checked the publication's PAL and my Web2 user has rights and is an owner of the Web2 TheDB database.
We have two SQL Server 2005 production DB at remote sites. Due to network bandwidth issue, we need to replicate these DBs (publishers and distributers) to central corporate SQL 2000 DB (subscriber for backup and possible reporting (and in rare case as a failover server).
We would start out with backup from SQL 2000 db restored on remote SQL 2005 DBs. When we have DB issue on remote 2005 DB, we want to restore it from central corp. 2000 DB backup. Since two DBs are replicating to central DB, we DO NOT want combined db back up data on restored remote 2005 db. We can restore the db and delete unwanted data before we turn on replication from this restored server. So, this is not a problem.
The real problem is how to avoid snapshot replication (during initialization) when we create a transaction replication on this restored server to avoid over writing data on the central subcriber sql 2000 DB???
I'm converting an existing production replication process to SQL 2005 for testing. My snapshot for a merge replication is failing.
Environment: Single XP server, no filters, @schema_option = 0x000000000C034DD1
I have several snapshot jobs in my process, 2 for transactional replication and 2 for merge replications. In both types, I'm replicating from A to B and then from B to C. In the failing job, I'm merge replicating from B to C. In this failing snapshot job, the error messages are:
2006-03-01 18:42:17.22 [58%] Bulk copying snapshot data for article 'MyName1' 2006-03-01 18:42:17.34 [58%] Bulk copied snapshot data for article 'MyName2' (0 rows). 2006-03-01 18:42:17.41 [58%] Bulk copied snapshot data for article 'MyName1'(195 rows). 2006-03-01 18:42:29.84 [61%] Discovering dependencies among article objects in the specified publication 2006-03-01 18:42:33.66 [61%] The replication agent had encountered an exception. 2006-03-01 18:42:33.66 Source: Unknown 2006-03-01 18:42:33.66 Exception Type: Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.FailedOperationException 2006-03-01 18:42:33.66 Exception Message: Discover dependencies failed. 2006-03-01 18:42:33.66 Message Code: Not Applicable 2006-03-01 18:42:33.66
Does anyone have an idea what I could look for to try and fix this?
The A to B snapshot obviously uses the same tables. My snapshot for merge job (which worked) messages for the A to B snapshot are:

I was trying an edition upgrade from SQL 2005 standard x64 to SQL 2005 enterprise x64 using the "setup SKUUPGRADE=1" from the command line. The SO is W2003 server R2 enterprise and I have a SQL clustered environment with 2 nodes (active/passive).
I select to upgrade the SQL module and I mark the checkbox for the cluster installation. The installation seems to work properly untill setup is doing the task "removing backup files". Then 2 "unexpected error" message appears as follows. The 2 above windows appear when you click on the help icon.
Link to screen capture
The following is the end of the SQL setup log file:
I'm trying to run what I thought was a relatively straightforward query to find all entries from one table that don't appear in another table:
select * from Search_Suggestion where Suggestion not in (select distinct C106 from Search_Log)
The Search_Suggestion table contains 4060 entries and the Search_Log table contains 142,000+ distinct entries.
From running a similar query using 'in' instead of 'not in' I find that there are 3778 matches between the two tables would logic which suggest leave 282 that don't exist in the Search_Log table.
However....when I run the above query it returns no records.
I've tried changing it around and have also tried using temp tables but each time I still get no records.
I have lost the reference but I read somewhere that when running DBCC DBREINDEX against a clustered index, all the secondary indexes on the table are automatically re-indexed as well. I did a test of this on a small table and it seemed to confirm this. However, now I've put this into practice, I am finding that it doesn't seem to work this way. I noticed that having run DBCC DBREINDEX against a table's clustered index (DBCC DBREINDEX ('tablename', 'clusteredIndexName', fill_factor)), the secondary indexes were not automatically re-indexed - as born out by the fact that they remained badly fragmented.
First of all, do the dba's who read this beleive it is correct that DBCC DBREINDEX run against a clustered index will automatically rebuild the secondary indexes too? If so, why wouldn't it work in all cases?
Normally, after I use DBCC DBREINDEX, I can be sure that Scan Density on a clustered or non-clustered index is very good - eg. 99% or 100%. However, I have one database where there are a number of indexes that are not showing any improvement in Scan Density after running DBCC DBREINDEX. In on case, a clustered index, I run it on two days in succession and Scan Density actually go worse! Can anyone give me a reason for this? Can anyone suggest how to fix it?
I'm having difficulty coming up with the right syntax for a query. Suppose I have a database containing a Stores table, an ProductInventory table, and a Customers table. The Stores table has an ID field that serves as a foreign key in both the ProductInventory table and in the Customers table. I'm trying to write a query that, for each Store record, will return the total number of records in the ProductInventory table and the total number of records in the Customers table.
The following query returns, for each store, the total number of records in the ProductInventory table:
SELECT Stores.Name, COUNT(ProductInventory.ID) AS ProductInventoryItemCount FROM Stores LEFT JOIN ProductInventory ON Stores.ID = ProductInventory.StoreID GROUP BY Stores.Name
The following query returns, for each store, the total number of records in the Customers table:
SELECT Stores.Name, COUNT(Customers.ID) AS CustomerCount FROM Stores LEFT JOIN ProductInventory ON Stores.ID = Customers.StoreID GROUP BY Stores.Name
I combined the two queries:
SELECT Stores.Name, COUNT(ProductInventory.ID) AS ProductInventoryItemCount, COUNT(Customers.ID) AS CustomerCount FROM Stores LEFT JOIN ProductInventory ON Stores.ID = ProductInventory.StoreID LEFT JOIN Customers ON Stores.ID = Customers.StoreID GROUP BY Stores.Name
When I run this last query, however, I get an "Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type int" error. Using COUNT_BIG instead of COUNT eliminates the error, but the numbers that are generated are astronomical in size. This indicates to me that there is a *lot* more table joining going on than I expected
What is the correct syntax to produce the desired results? I have a few other tables similar to ProductInventory and Customers; I'm hoping to extend the correct syntax so as to be able to get a comprehensive record count list for each store. Thanks for your help!
I have a simple update statement (see example below) that when runs, I expect to see the number of records updated in the Results tab. This information shows up in the Messages tab; however, what is displayed in the Results tab is (No column name) 40. From where the 40 is being generated. I have tried restarting SSMS 2012, restarting my computer, turning NOCOUNT on and off.
"UPDATE TableA SET Supervisor = 'A123' WHERE PersonnelNumber = 'B456'"
I need to query the count of an occurrence in a given period of time, so I created this query. But it does not give me any results.
SELECT TOP 1000 o.[ID] ,o.[TimeOfOrder] ,x.[StreeLine1] FROM [SC].[dbo].[bvc_Order] o FULL JOIN SC.dbo.xmlAddressRead x ON o.ID= x.id WHERE DATEDIFF(HOUR,o.[TimeOfOrder],(DATEADD(Hour, -48, GETDATE()))) < 48 GROUP BY x.[StreeLine1], o.ID, o.TimeOfOrder HAVING COUNT(x.[StreeLine1])>1
Then I change the query slightly and I ask it to show me the ones that are going to '599 Ships Landing Way' and it gives me 356 results! The Query doesn't crash, but it doesn't give me the results I need. What did I do incorrectly?
SELECT TOP 1000 o.[ID] ,o.[TimeOfOrder] ,x.[StreeLine1] FROM [SC].[dbo].[bvc_Order] o FULL JOIN SC.dbo.xmlAddressRead x ON o.ID= x.id WHERE DATEDIFF(HOUR,o.[TimeOfOrder],(DATEADD(Hour, -48, GETDATE()))) < 48 AND x.[StreeLine1]='599 Ships Landing Way'
Hi I have a strange issue here. Both the input datasets of the merge join are sorted . Everything works fine if the dataset doesn't contain speacial characters like - (hipen). This is the sorted dataset.ASI311_3ASI311_3ASI312ASI311ASIKit1ASIKit1
Merge Joiner has to look for ASI311 and finds it in the list and everything works as expected. But if the dataset is changed to
ASI311_3ASI311_3ASI-312ASI311ASIKit1ASIKit1
Then it doesn't find the ASI311 in the above dataset ? Only change between the two datasets is the - (hipen) which is added in one of the field. Does SSIS has a differenent precedence of the special characters than that of the Database. Both the datasets are on SQLServer.
i use a transactional replication to load my datawarehouse DB everynight.
This works fine for the first repliaction but on the second i get the error "Agent message code 21074 the subscriptions need to be reinitialized..." and i have to reinitialize with new snapshots.
I'm getting this, after upgrading from 2000 to 2005.Replication-Replication Distribution Subsystem: agent (null) failed. The subscription to publication '(null)' has expired or does notexist. The only suggestions I've seen are to dump all subscriptions. Sincewe have several dozen publications to several servers, is there adecent way to script it all out, if that's the only suggestion? Thanks in advance.
-- The 3rd query uses an incorrect column name in a sub-query and succeeds but rows are incorrectly qualified. This is very DANGEROUS!!! -- The issue exists is in 2008 R2, 2012 and 2014 and is "By Design"
set nocount on go if object_id('tempdb.dbo.#t1') IS NOT NULL drop table #t1 if object_id('tempdb.dbo
[code]....
This succeeds when the invalid column name is a valid column name in the outer query. So in this situation the sub-query would fail when run by itself but succeed with an incorrectly applied filter when run as a sub-query. The danger here is that if a SQL Server user runs DML in a production database with such a sub-query which then the results are likely not the expected results with potentially unintended actions applied against the data. how many SQL Server users have had incorrectly applied DML or incorrect query results and don't even know it....?
what can cause the above error when connecting to an endpoint via a c# app? the app, and sql are both on my machine ( im just doing this for test purposes and to learn something new.)
I've got this error coming up while running the sql job for AS processing. I can't find anything about it on google or anywhere else. Has anyone had issues like this?

First off I understand that it is a horrible idea to run extremely large/long running reports, but sometimes it ends up being the best possible solution due to external forces.
I've got a 25,000 page report that we recently converted from crystal reports to SSRS. The SSRS server is a 64bit 2003 server with 32 gigs of ram running SSRS 2005. When running the report through the report manager web application, it renders in the browser/viewer after about 12 minutes. Exporting to pdf through the browser/viewer in the report manager takes an additional 55 minutes. It does work and it produces a whopping 1.03gb pdf.
Unfortunately, I've run into a problem when trying to do this from a console application using the SSRS client API. After about 30-35 minutes I get an exception on the client with the following error: Exception Message: The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive. InnerException = Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Here is the api call:

set the HttpRuntime ExecutionTimeout value to 3 hours on the report server disabled http keep alives on the report server increased the script timeout on the report server set the report to never time out on the server set the report timeout to several hours on the client call Disabled antivirus on the client side, and verified there was no antivirus running on the reporting server. Tried using default credentials in the ReportingService object as opposed to supplying credentailsAny ideas would be appreciated. I understand the best solution is to split the report up into smaller reports, which is the backup option, but being able to keep it as one report is the goal.

Yes and I would rather not use dts to accomplish this task.

Do you have direct network connection to remote server? Did you try dts?

I've been trying to replicate a database to an off site server using snapshot replication. It is scheduled to run every hour but I've noticed when data is changed at the source it never gets replicated to the destination. Does anyone know why?? I can't use transactional replication beause not all the tables have primary keys and they can't be added due to code. Some tables have id colunms and have been created with the Not for Replication option on the subscriber. Any help will be appreciated.
I can set up snapshot replication for those tables without foreign key constraints. But if there are foreign keys in the table, there will be error message indicating that this object can not be dropped because it is referenced by ....
