SQL 2005 Standard Won't Accept Connections - All Common/FAQ Remedies Have No Effect
Sep 24, 2006
Hi,
SQL
Server 2005 isn't accepting any connection other than SQL Management
Studio from the local machine. However, even that's exhibiting strange
behavior (please see below for more details).
I've read
through all the common errors regarding enabling remote connections via
the SAC tool, making sure protocols are enabled, etc. This case seems
to be completely outside. Any advice appreciated.
Thanks,
Elias
[1] Client side:
What
is the connection string in you app or DSN? N/A. Can't connect via any
remote method, including client Control Panel > ODBC > create
DSN, SQL Server Enterprise Manager, third party application.
If
client fails to connect, what is the client error messages? Several,
depending on method: "server does not exist or access denied", "error
has occurred... under default settings, SQL Server does not accept
remote connections", etc.
Is the client remote or local to the SQL server machine? Remote
Can you ping your server? YesCan
you telnet to your SQL Server? No. However, there's a functional
instance of SQL Server 2000 on the same domain which has no problems- telnet also fails to that instance, even locally from either machine using the 127.0.0.1 address. Telnet functions for other ports.
What
is your client database provider? N/A Or/And, what is your client
application? SQL Management Studio and others
Is your client computer in the same domain as the Server computer? Same domain
What protocol the client enabled? TCPIP when I attempted to create the DSN. Not sure what protocol SQL Management Studio uses.
Do
you have aliases configured that match the server name portion of your
connection string? NoDo you select force encryption on server and/or client? No
[2] Server side:
What is the MS SQL version? SQL Server 2005
What is the SKU of MS SQL? Standard
What
is the SQL Server Protocol enabled? [Shared Memory | TCPIP | Named
Pipes ] Have tried all three individually and together. Configuration Manager exhibits strange behavior (see below)Does
the server start successfully? Server starts successfully when the
machine boots. However once it's stopped, it can't be restarted (see
below)
If SQL Server is a named instance, is the SQL browser enabled? Default instance
What is the account that the SQL Server is running under? Local SystemDo
you make firewall exception for your SQL server TCP port if you want
connect remotely through TCP provider? Not sure, but SQL Server 200 instance is working OK
Do
you make firewall exception for SQL Browser UDP port 1434? Unknown
[3] Platform:
What is the OS version? Client: Windows XPSP2 Server: Windows Server 2003
Do you have third party antivirus, anti-spareware software installed? Client: Trend Micro Server: UnknownOther behavior:
A separate instance of SQL Server 2000 on a different machine on the same domain is functioning without problems.
Telnet
to either SQL Server (functional 2000 or problem 2005) on port 1433 is
not possible - even when attempted from the local machine using
127.0.0.1! Telnet to both machines works using other ports.
When
creating a DSN from a client machine, problem 2005 instance is in list
of available SQL Servers, however connection fails ("SQL Server denied
access or does not exist").
MSSQLSERVER service starts
automatically on boot. However, once stopped the service can not be
restarted. Message given: "SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service on Local
Computer Started and then Stopped. Some services stop automatically if
they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts
Service."
SQL
Server Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections tool
does not display Database Engine option as indicated by this MS guide
to enabling remote connections:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;914277
SQL
Server communication manager shows TCP, Shared memory, named pipes
enabled. However event log seems to show instance not listening via any
protocol. Message displayed as: "SQL Server listening on ." (should
read: "Server is listening on ['any' <ipaddress> <ipv4>
<Port Number>])
Several answers indicated uninstall and reinstall could solve these problems. However, wizard refused to uninstall SQL Server.
Attempted disabling Shared Memory as documentation indicates this protocol gets used first. No luck.
Access through SQL Server Management Studio works, from local machine only.
Able to ping machine by name and IP.

After reading all the comments about microsoft ole db provider for db2, I've started converting a project from ibm db2 provider to microsoft ole db provider, for the reason that the server would not need a ibm client software installation anylonger.
However in one of the dataflows there is a select statement on the DB2 database (AS400 iseries DB2 V5R4) that uses common table expression. The Oledb data source in the Dataflow returns zero input columns when I use the microsoft provider instead of the ibm provider. When I set it back to use the ibm oledb provider the input columns are available again.
The common table expression is used in the select statement like:
WITH x AS (SELECT ... FROM mytable WHERE ...)
SELECT x.*, (x.a - x.b) As diff
FROM x
We are not allowed to change anything in the DB2 database, so using views or sprocs is not an option.
Did anyone else experience this and can it be avoided without changing the selct logic?

After applying the changes mentioned in KB 914277 to allow remote connections, while working in Visual Studio 2005, I'm now getting an error with the number 26: Error locating server/Instance specified...
Sure wish I knew what remote means in this scenario, as there is nothing "remote" about my installation. I only have 1 computer, the one i'm working on, where SQL Server and Visual Studio are installed, and no networks involved, so what is remote?
Any help would be appreciated!!

I cannot understand how this was allowed to happen, but I can recreate the situation all day long. Someone, please tell me that I have missed an obvious solution to this;
With a fresh install of SQL 2005 Express (SP2) I have 4 databases installed and two service-based applications running. One of the service applications uses/requires three of the four databases and the second service application uses/requires the fourth database.
On boot, with the above described services set to depend on SQL Server service startup I get repeated failures on initial database access. Looking at the event log reveals why (in sequence):
SQL Server Startup...
Event: Server local connection provider is ready to accept connection on...
Event: Server named pipe provider is ready to accept connection on...
Event: Server is listening on [ 'any' <ipv4> 1911]
Application Service Startup...
Event: SQL Server is not ready to accept new client connections. Wait a few minutes before trying again. If you have access to the error log, look for the informational message that indicates that SQL Server is ready before trying to connect again
Moments Later:
Event: SQL Server is now ready for client connections. This is an informational message; no user action is required.
Now, its clear that the SQL service has started, and that this opens the floodgates for dependant services to start, each of which is told - essentially - to go away and come back once the SQL server has **really** started. With the accompanying suggestion to 'look for the informational message that indicates that SQL Server is ready' in the event log.
Am I reading the situation right so far?
In response to this, with my developer way of thinking, I could probably script the startup of application services rather than have them start automatically at boot or some such insane idea. But its not really the way that I had planned to spend the next few hours of my life, and it seems to me that I should not have to do such a thing.
Our in house service application (one of the two described) is in fact robust enough (just enough) to survive and to try the connection periodically, accomplishing a successful startup even with no database available.
The second of the two services is external and is unfortunately unable to start with no database available (Business Objects XI CMS). The normal means of making this service robust against database outages is the service restart procedure setting. But since the service doesnt ever start successfully, this doesnt work (learn something new every day - the restart is literal. It does not provide an initial startup retry and the service must have been started and fail for the retry to kick in)
Now, im not trying to bash anyone over this situation and regardless of the inflexible nature of the external service application and the general sillyness of the SQL server startup sequence - i mean c'mon... we are started but not ready? How about dont report startup until after you are ready? - the end result is that I need to come up with a solution to this problem.
I cant imagine that this is the first time that this behaviour has been questioned and I have to believe that there will be a simple, reliable workaround. I will keep looking for myself, but if any of this sounds familiar and you have a suggestion, your response will be greatly appreciated.

I have an app that will have up to 13 PC's. Each machine will be logging data to the 200X Express Server every 5 seconds. The data size sent each time will be around 1K each.
1. Is this within the limits of 200X Express?
2. At what point do you decide that Express is bottlenecked and Standard is needed?
Thanks for any help!

I'm a newbie to Replication and recently setup the following.
Publisher and Distributor on the same SQL2005 server, then I've got 7 subscribers(SQL2000 servers) and I'm using push subscriptions. I'm replicating 5 SQl tables which don't have too many changes and these are scheduled to run every 3 hours. In a few days a large one off SQL update with add an additional 10,000 rows to one of the replicated tables. I was wondering what impact this would have on the above setup i.e are there any sort of limitations here. I'm assuming not but thought I would check. I'm thinking it will just cause additional overhead on the server, but the update is being applied when no users will be using the database.
Any feedback greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi, I have installed on my laptop SQL server 2005 Developer edition, I can change ANY of the settings of the SQL server and OS.
I am writing code with a team using continuous integration where the connection string is the following:
"Provider=SQLNCLI;Server=.SQLEXPRESS;Database=Secret;Trusted_Connection=Yes;"
is there a way (create an alias,rename server, other?) to make my local dev SQL server accept the connection string above, as at the moment I have to rename the connection string every time before checking in code and after downloading the latest version from the code repository.
any advice or tips will be greatly appreciated
Thanks

How do SQL 2000 service packs play a role in upgrading? That is, can SQL 2000 Standard with no Service Packs(SP) be upgraded to SQL 2005 Standard, or does SQL 2000 Standard have to have a certain service pack??

Users were able tolog on to our SQL 2000 servers with their passwords being case-insensitive.
Now with SQL 2005 some users can't logon because SQL 2005 passwords are case-sensitive.
Can SQL 2005 be configured so that passwords are NOT case sensitive???
Thanks!

Hi,
We are developing the web application using ASP.NET 2.0 using C# with Backend of SQL Server 2005.
Now we have one requirement with my client, Already our application live in ASP using MS Access Database. In Access Database our client already wrote the query, those query call the another query from same database. So I want to over take this functionality in SQL Server 2005.
In ASP Application, We call this query €œ081Stats€? from Record set.
This €˜081Stats€™ query call below sub query itself
Master Query: 081Stats
SELECT DISTINCTROW [08Applicants].school, [08Applicants].Applicants, [08Interviewed].Interviewed, [Interviewed]/[Applicants] AS [interviewed%], [08Accepted].Accepted, [Accepted]/[Applicants] AS [Accepted%], [08Dinged].Dinged, [Dinged]/[Applicants] AS [Dinged%], [08Waitlisted].Waitlisted, [Applicants]-[Accepted]-[Dinged] AS Alive, [08Matriculating].Matriculating, [Matriculating]/[Accepted] AS [Yield%]
FROM ((((08Applicants LEFT JOIN 08Interviewed ON [08Applicants].school = [08Interviewed].school) LEFT JOIN 08Accepted ON [08Applicants].school = [08Accepted].school) LEFT JOIN 08Dinged ON [08Applicants].school = [08Dinged].school) LEFT JOIN 08Waitlisted ON [08Applicants].school = [08Waitlisted].school) LEFT JOIN 08Matriculating ON [08Applicants].school = [08Matriculating].school;
Sub Query 1: 08Accepted
SELECT statusTbl.school, Count(1) AS Accepted
FROM statusTbl
WHERE (((statusTbl.decision)=1) AND ((statusTbl.yearapp)="2008"))
GROUP BY statusTbl.school
ORDER BY Count(1) DESC;
Sub Query 2: 08Applicants
SELECT statusTbl.school, Count(1) AS Accepted
FROM statusTbl
WHERE (((statusTbl.decision)=1) AND ((statusTbl.yearapp)="2008"))
GROUP BY statusTbl.school
ORDER BY Count(1) DESC;
Sub Query 3: 08Dinged
SELECT statusTbl.school, Count(1) AS Dinged
FROM statusTbl
WHERE (((statusTbl.decision)=0) AND ((statusTbl.yearapp)="2008"))
GROUP BY statusTbl.school
ORDER BY Count(1) DESC;
Sub Query 4: 08Interviewed
SELECT statusTbl.school, Count(1) AS Interviewed
FROM statusTbl
WHERE (((statusTbl.interview)=True) AND ((statusTbl.yearapp)="2008"))
GROUP BY statusTbl.school
ORDER BY Count(1) DESC;
Sub Query 5: 08Matriculating
SELECT statusTbl.school, Count(1) AS Matriculating
FROM statusTbl
WHERE (((statusTbl.userdec)=True) AND ((statusTbl.yearapp)="2008"))
GROUP BY statusTbl.school
ORDER BY Count(1) DESC;
So now I got the solution from SQL Server 2005. I.e. Common Table Expressions, So I got the syntax and other functionality, Now my doubts is how do implement the CTE in SQL Server 2005, where can I store the CTE in SQL Server 2005.
How can I call that CTE from ASP.NET 2.0 using C#?
CTE is replacing the Stored Procedure and Views, because it is memory based object in SQL Server 2005.
How can I implement the CTE, where can I write the CTE and where can I store the CTE.
And how can I call the CTE from ASP.NET 2.0 using C#.
It€™s Very Urgent Requirements.
We need your timely help.
With Thanks & Regards,
Sundar

Hi all,
I have the following T-SQL code of Common Table Express (CTE) that works in the SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE):
--CTE.sql--
USE ChemAveRpd
GO
WITH PivotedLabTests AS
(
SELECT LT.AnalyteName, LT.Unit,
Prim = MIN(CASE S.SampleType WHEN 'Primary' THEN LT.Result END),
Dupl = MIN(CASE S.SampleType WHEN 'Duplicate' THEN LT.Result END),
QA = MIN(CASE S.SampleType WHEN 'QA' THEN LT.Result END)
FROM LabTests LT
JOIN Samples S ON LT.SampleID = S.SampleID
GROUP BY LT.AnalyteName, LT.Unit
)
SELECT AnalyteName, Unit, avg1 = (abs(Prim + Dupl)) / 2,
avg2 = (abs(Prim + QA)) / 2,
avg3 = (abs(Dupl + QA)) / 2,
RPD1 = (abs(Prim - Dupl) / abs(Prim + Dupl)) * 2,
RPD2 = (abs(Prim - QA) / abs(Prim + QA)) * 2,
RPD3 = (abs(Dupl - QA) / abs(Dupl + QA)) * 2
FROM PivotedLabTests
GO
===========================================
How can I execute this set of the CTE.sql code in the VB 2005 Express via the Stored Procedure programming?
Please help and respond.

Hi,
I have a central database server that is runnning on SQL 2005 standard edition and Windows server 2003 standard as OS.
I realise that I can use SQL statements to encrypt and decrypt the data inside the standard SQL.
However, how do I read and write the data via an web application coded in C#.net and is also running on the same machine?
Another issue is, I need to replicate some of the data in this SQL standard over to a SQL mobile running on a mobile device running on Windows CE 5.0.
The mobile device also needs to read and write data to the encrypted data via a C#.net application.
Question is, with all these requirements to be met, can I use AES? I know that AES is not available on Windows XP and Windows Server 2000 and I cant find AES in the .net compact framework.
how do i go about ensuring security? how do I ensure that the symmetric key is the same both on the SQL standard and SQL mobile?
thank you.

I'm having problems upgrading the SQL express 2005 database engine services to 2005 standard 32 bit. I've also tried to install sql 2005 service pack 1 "SQLServer2005SP1-KB913090-x86-ENU.exe" and it did the same thing, upgraded everything except the database engine services. I am trying to upgrade SQL Server Express 2005 Report Server to SQL 2005 Standard and it fails with the following error:
SQL Server Setup did not have the administrator permissions required to copy a file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting ServicesReportServer
ssrvpolicy.config. To continue, verify that the file exists, and either grant administrator permissions to the account currently running Setup or log in with an administrator account. Then run SQL Server Setup again.
After I click OK on the message, this whole path where the upgrade is bieng installed dissapears C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting Services. The error is a bit missleading because the file that it is trying to copy rssrvpolicy.config does appear in that upgrade folder so I am not sure why it would try to copy a file that has already been copied.
I was able to upgrade the Database Engine instance fine but can't upgrade Reporting Services due to that error. I have verified that the account that ran the setup had the administrator permissions. Your prompt reply to my question would be greatly appreciatted.

Hi everyone,I am trying to connect to SQL Server 2005 Express with Advanced Services from Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition. I have SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition but it took up so much space and resources on my computer that I didn't want to put it back on there. So I put the SQL Express on there and while the Management Studio application connects just fine, VS 2005 will not. Oddly enough, VS 2005 connected just fine to SQL 2005 Standard. I have enabled shared memory, named pipes and TCP/IP. I have set up SQL Express to accept remote connections on named pipes and TCP/IP. And I have tried running SQL Express as the Local System Account, as a Local Service and as a Network Service. Nothing. I have tried feeding the Server Name is the Data Connections dialog in Visual Studio my SQL Express instance as (local)/SQLEXPRESS, localhost/SQLEXPRESS, and {computername}/SQLEXPRESS where {computername} is the name of my local computer which SQL Express is (allegedly) running on. And I cannot get the list of databases on that server.There is probably something very simple that I have left out. Can anyone see what it is?Thanks!

Now a customer asks me to install my application on an already existant instance of SQL Server standard edition.I was not able to use nor my application, neither a HelloWorld example.I created a simple Default.aspx that uses a simple database with a single table "Person" via a standard gridview. When I try to open the page I receive an error wich informs me that NT Network service is not able to access database.I've been searching on google for hours and I've tryed unsuccessfully several different way.Can anyone suggest me a scientific procedure to migrate an ASP .net web site from sql 2005 express to sql 2005 standard ?Thank you very Much Fabrizio

I've been reading and looking over what to do for my situation for several days. I need to ask and see if I can get a clear answer.
My Scenario:
I have a SQL Server 2005 Eval installed that is currently running with live data. I need to upgrade that to a recently-purchased full version. I have several databases set up. I have ready the article 914158 that states it will fail. It's still running so I can access everything. If I restart or stop the service I'm screwed.
That do I do?
Thanks so much!

I am a newbie developing a web site. My local machine has sql 2005 standard edition on it. The host that I am trying to use only has sql 2005 64 bit version.
would I be able to do the use the same database between the two ( i.e. once my site is running at host, would I be able to download the database on my local machine, make changes to my site and then upload again on the hose without any glitches?). In addition, how about sql express doing the same with sql 2005 64 bit.
Thanks a lot for taking time to read the post.

Hi,
I currently use SQL 2005 express advanced. I connect to it from approx 20 pc's simultaneously and all works well. Each "client" connects with the same user, therefore I have one user setup within SQL server and then all client pc's connect to the database with the same user and password. This works well.
Owing to the database file size restriction of 4 gig, I now need to purchase full SQL 2005 Standard.
My question is, if I buy SQL 2005 Standard with 5 CAL (client access licences) does that mean that I can no longer connect my 20 client pc's to the server at the same time, even though I am only actually logging in with 1 user only?
Any help is greatly appreciated as I can't seem to get an answer to this question via microsoft at all, and a 20 user licence of full sql 2005 is beyond my budget.
many thanks

After trawling a lot of on-line info I'm still not sure....
With current system configuration of WS2003 (64-bit) Enterprise, 8 GB RAM and SQL2005 (32-bit) Standard can SQL use all available RAM?
From my reading I have found references to SQL2005 (32-bit) Standard can access all RAM available to the OS and other references suggest that only SQL2005 (32-bit) Enterprise can do this...
All help gratefully received....

I have a 32-bit Windows Server 2003 Enterprise server with 8GB memory. I have enabled the /PAE switch in boot.ini and the server sees all 8GB. have installed SQL 2005 Standard and set the awe-enabled option (including maxmemory setting to 6GB, minmemory to 1GB). The account running SQL has the 'lock pages in memory' option enabled. For some reason SQL doesn't use anywhere near 6GB (seems to sit at 1.7GB). Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
