SQL 2005 Non Default Installation Queries Regarding Reboots
Oct 16, 2007
Hi,
I'm just looking into installing a second instance of SQL 2005 with SP2 on a W2K3 R2 machine that already contains a default instance, if i do so is the order of installation
1) Install named instance
2) Apply SP2 to the newly installed named instance
If i do this, will either of these require a system reboot ?
The default instance should remain operational if no reboot required as the service pack is for a specific instance in this case ?
Thanks in advance

In sql 2000, during the installation an option was given to allow the installer to install to a different drive or path, however in sql 2005, I do not see an option. During the installation it does give you the option of installing via the command line interface, however this would be the last option. If this is the only method of installing sql 2005 for a different data drive path, then please provide the command line to do this. I've used the command line osql/isql to restore db's in sql 2000/msde and it's a pain.

Hi all,
I have a MDX query that has been put together from a Analysis Services Cube in Reporting Services, as below:
SELECT NON EMPTY { [Measures].[MM Document Count], [Measures].[FI Document Total], [Measures].[MM Document Total], [Measures].[FI Document Count] } ON COLUMNS, NON EMPTY { ([Lookup Company Code].[Company Code].[Company Code].ALLMEMBERS * [Lookup Financial Period].[Financial Year].[Financial Year].ALLMEMBERS * [Lookup Financial Period].[Financial Period].[Financial Period].ALLMEMBERS ) } DIMENSION PROPERTIES MEMBER_CAPTION, MEMBER_UNIQUE_NAME ON ROWS FROM ( SELECT ( STRTOSET(@LookupCompanyCodeCompanyCode, CONSTRAINED) ) ON COLUMNS FROM [SAP Document Analysis Doc Totals MM FI]) CELL PROPERTIES VALUE, BACK_COLOR, FORE_COLOR, FORMATTED_VALUE, FORMAT_STRING, FONT_NAME, FONT_SIZE, FONT_FLAGSIt has a parameters @LookupCompanyCodeCompanyCode, which creates the following dataset query:
WITH MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterCaption] AS '[Lookup Company Code].[Company Code].CURRENTMEMBER.MEMBER_CAPTION' MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterValue] AS '[Lookup Company Code].[Company Code].CURRENTMEMBER.UNIQUENAME' MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterLevel] AS '[Lookup Company Code].[Company Code].CURRENTMEMBER.LEVEL.ORDINAL' SELECT {[Measures].[ParameterCaption], [Measures].[ParameterValue], [Measures].[ParameterLevel]} ON COLUMNS , [Lookup Company Code].[Company Code].ALLMEMBERS ON ROWS FROM [SAP Document Analysis Doc Totals MM FI]
Within the Report Parameters it is set with as being a Multi value parameter and default value for return all records: [Lookup Company Code].[Company Code].[All]
This work fine when previewing report & when I build.
Problem is when I drop a report viewer control in VWD 2005 and attach this report, it does not run with the default values when the page loads.
Does anyone have a idea what I might be doing wrong? or/and how would i pass a value from a listbox extbox to the parameter and then run the report?
Thanks in advance
Kevin

I have built an application that uses SQLExpress. When I build the setup with a new setup Project I include in the prerequisites SQLExpress so that if the target PC has no SQL server installed the setup sequence will automatically install an instance.
The Serup Sequence installes SQL Server with default Instance name and settings. I need to make the setup package to install the SQL instance with a specific name and some other setting. These settings would be
/qb ADDLOCAL=ALL SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD=pass INSTANCENAME=instname DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0
if i run it from Command Line.
I searched a lot on my own and didnt find any way of predefining these setting. Tnx in advance

Hello,
Our security center just scanned my database server and has asked that I change the database server from the default instance name and change the default port used. When installed MS SQL Server 2000 I used the default installation settings. I have installed SP4 and this is all running on a fully patched WIN 2003 Server machine. Is this possible without un-installing and then re-installing?
Thanks for any and all help.

HiWhen we installed SqlServer2000 we left the default collation name(Sql_Latin1_General_CPI_CI_AS).The user defined databases we created afterwards were defined with adifferent collation name in order to be able to accept the character setwe use, Hebrew.We are looking into switching DTSs that we use to copy data from ourmain system , that uses an Ingres database, into OSQL scripts. Althoughthe DTSs successfully copy the Hebrew letters when I copy data with OSQLit comes over as jibberish.After looking into the matter I came to the conclusion that while DTSrefers to specific databases and uses the destination database'scollation name , OSQL refers to the remote server and destination serverand therefore uses the collation name of the server and not of thedatabase. In order for it to successfully copy the Hebrew I need tochange the default collation name of the installation.Is "rebuild master" the way to do such a thing ? (this is a productionserver so we are wary of doing a "rebuild master")Has anyone else run into similar problems when transfering data betweenservers using OSQL ?ThanksDavid Greenberg

I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition in parallel with SQL Server 2000. The server is a Dell 2650 with 1 GB RAM running Windows 2000 Server.
The initial part of the setup runs the System Configuration Checker (SCC), which is generating this warning:
Default Installation Path Permission Requirement (Warning)
The server is a member of a domain, but I am logged in as the local administrator. The drive is not compressed. There are no file system problems. I am at a loss as to why this warning is occuring, and do not want to proceed until I figure this out.
(I got this warning on another server as well. That was a test server, so I proceeded. The engine seems to run ok, but SSIS will not load, says a component is missing. Not sure if the two issues are related or not).
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

We do a 4:00AM weekly reboot of every SQL 7.0 server on NT4 scheduled as a SQL Agent job using the os command "shutdown servername /l /c /y /r". The problem is some of the SQL servers recognize the NT shutdown command and gracefully exit out of SQL first with the SQL log entry "SQL Server terminating because of system shutdown", then closes all databases files. Most of the other SQL server do not list any SQL log messages and sometimes list startup error messages indicating a dirty shutdown.
Does anyone else reboot their SQL servers with a scheduled job? If so, how do you perform this task cleanly?
Thanks,
D

I am working with a client that after every reboot of there SQL 2000 DB server, they experience slow response time for a couple of hours. The server has 12 GB RAM and a Dual 3.8 processor. It is believed that the slow response is due to as queries run after the reboot, they are re-building information in memory and after the memory is built up, it goes back to the normal performance utilizing the memory for speed. Is this an accurate assumption or is there something else to be looking at after the server is rebooted?
Thanks,
JB

This is sort of a DR issue since it involves reboots and power failures.
We have MSSQL 2005 SP1 and unpatched systems, but in particular we have this problem still with the SP1 server (in addition to the unpatched systems). Running on Win 2k3.
It seems that upon reboot, our stored SSIS jobs lose their pemissions and/or ownership for execution. It doesn't happen at every reboot or power failure, but seemingly more than half the time.
Here is the error reported:
The job failed. The owner () of job Job_1 does not have server access.
But checking the properties of the job and it shows an valid owner in the Owner field. I believe we are using Active Directory for authentication and the user listed is valid in that respect.
We have "fixed" this problem before by removing the job completely and re-installing it, with the same owner. No issues until the next system outage.
Has anyone else seen this before? Is there a fix or is this some kind of bug?

Good evening:
We're porting an old app written in ASP.NET 1.1433 and SQL 2000 to ASP.NET 2.0 and SQL 2005. In the old app we have a few data grids that are populated from a dataset pulled from the database. We use a SQL query that we build based on more than 10 different user inputs, the result of which is an enormously complicated SQL string. We'd like to move this processing into a SPROC in the 2005 database.
Rather than writing stored procedures to create the SQL SELECT statement, is it possible to pass an entire select state ment to a SPROC and have it executed within? We're trying to capitalize on paging in 2005 using ...ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY PM ASC)... and building the string using IF ELSE statements is mind numbling complex and tedious.
And suggestions woudl be great.
Thanks,
Brad

Hi everybody!
I have made a simple application with VB6 and SQL 2005 Express.
And after testing it in a network simulated with Virtual-Machine Workstation, the "real world" application was first getting slower and slower, and finally giving timeout errors.
It is even difficult to connect. The application times out always at 30 secs although the ado connection timeout was established longer (45)
I have checked on the machine where the server is installed, just in case the slow down was due to network problems, but it fail locally too.
Any help is wellcome

I have upsized some Access 2002 tables to Sql Server 2005 express. I put together a query and when I try to execute it, it tells me the MS Access is an earlier version prior to SQL server 2005 and it will not save the queries. When I try to run them anyway, I get the repeated message and the query never executes. I'm taking a T-SQL class and this is how the instructor. Is they a fix for SQL Server or Access to get around this or do I have to revert back to MDSE 2000?? Can MDSE 2000 and SQL Server be loaded onto the same machine (laptop)? Help!!!!! I am very new at this...

I've setup a parameterised query in PHP correctly and achieved the results I wanted from a basic view.
I then developed the application to use a Table-valued Function to be able to simplify the PHP code.
SELECT * FROM [CDBF].[dbo].[webOrganisation] ('w%',5,11)
This query works fine within the code.
/* Define the query. */
$tsql = "SELECT * FROM webOrganisation ('w%',5,11)";
/* Execute the query. */
$stmt = sqlsrv_query( $connection, $tsql);
if ( ! $stmt )
{
echo "Error in statement 2 execution in display_search().";
die( print_r( sqlsrv_errors(), true));
}
/* Iterate through the resultset printing a row of data upon each iteration.*/
while( $row = sqlsrv_fetch_array( $stmt, SQLSRV_FETCH_ASSOC))
{
// Display results (this bit works fine!)
}
/* Free statement and connection resources. */
sqlsrv_free_stmt( $stmt);
However when I try to parameterise it, I get errors.
Error in statement 2 execution in display_search(). Array ( [0] => Array ( [0] => 07009 [SQLSTATE] => 07009 [1] => 0 [code] => 0 [2] => [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Invalid Descriptor Index [message] => [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Invalid Descriptor Index ) [1] => Array ( [0] => 07009 [SQLSTATE] => 07009 [1] => 0 [code] => 0 [2] => [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Invalid parameter number [message] => [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Invalid parameter number ) )
/* Define the query. */
$tsql = "SELECT * FROM webOrganisation ( ? , ? , ? )";
/* Execute the query. */
$start = 5;
$finish = 11;
$params = array($search.'%',$start,$finish);
$stmt = sqlsrv_query( $connection, $tsql, $params);
if ( ! $stmt )
All other parts of the code remain the same.
Where am I going wrong

If applicable, what's the limit on concurrent queries supported by SQL Server 2005 Express? Also, if there's a limit, does next connection after the max errors out or merely queues up?
