SQL 2007 Query Designer Using 4 Part Naming Linked Server - Bug ????
Jul 6, 2007
I have a linked server in SQL 2007 form SQL to DB2.(IBM)
If I write a distributed query from SQL to DB2 I get mt data returned.
ie:
select *
from openquery(Movex_Extranet,'Select * From mvxadta.ooline')
If I write a Query from SQL to DB2 using the 4-part naming convention linkserver.catalog.schema.object
then I also get my data returned.
ie:
select *
from MOVEX_EXTRANET.RCHASE5C.MVXADTA.OOLINE
My problem is with the Query Designer in SQL2007.
When I right click the first lot of code and select "Design query in editor"
The Designer GUI opens up and displays my table in graphical form with all columns selected - Great.
But When I repeat this for the code that uses the 4 part naming
The Designer opens up and displays the table but with no columns viewable or available for me to select ??
Anyone know what might be causing this to happen.
Is it a bug in SQL 2007 ??
I have tried linking the server using 2 types of providers ( One from Microsoft & one from IBM) but each time I still cannot see or choose columns in the designer using the 4part naming convention.
The 2 providers I tried where.
Microsoft OLE DB for ODBC Drivers.
IBM DB2 UDB for Iseries IBMDA400 OLE DB Provider
Any help greatly appretiated as I would really love to use the designer using 4part naming convention.
Apparently if you read this the it should work ?

I've finaly gotten a Linke Server up and running and been playing around with the settings, and one question keeps bugging me.
What is the point of the Catalog property value when you always have to put that database in the four part naming anyways?
Thanks.

How do you name sql linked-servers in your company ?
we have many legacy systems (random naming), but mostly newer systems follow this pattern
<ENVIRONMENT><APPLICATION><FUNCTION><VIRTUAL><NUMBER>
e.g.
PRD-FAX-DB-V01, TST-PAY-WEB-P02 etc.
We have link-servers all over the place. The ideal naming convention should satisfy following:
- developers should not have to modify code when deploying between environments DEV->TEST->PROD. This rules out using actual server name as linked-name.
- the name should easily identify actual server without much mental translation. This rules out relevant but generic names like FAXSERVER or PAYSERVER
- also, if the name could state that it is a linked-server e.g starting with LINK_, it works when reading the code.
So, I was thinking the link-name should simply remove the environment :
e.g LINK_FAX_DB_V01
that way, on DEV box, the underlying sql data source could point to the dev server, while on test, it could point to test server etc. without having to change code, and also knowing which server it's pointing to by just adding a TST or PRD in front-of it.

Hi,
I just found out that when I create a user defined scalar function, I must call it using dbo.[myFunctionName]. Why won't it work w/out dbo? Why are stored procedures able to use omit dbo?
Also, what is dbo specifying? I'm very unfamiliar with sql server security. Is this the user, schema, role? What's a schema? lol. Thanks.

I am importing an existing database into a Visual Studio SQL Server Database project using Schema Compare. The Schema Compare works fine and I updated my project successfully. However, the project won't build because of the existence of 3-part names in some objects:
E.g. I import the database MyDB into a new project MyDB using Schema Compare. The database contains views with queries like this:
SELECT col1, col2. col3
FROM MyDB.dbo.MyTable
When trying to build this project I get errors like:
Error 39
SQL71561: View: [dbo].[vw_MyView] has an unresolved reference to object [MyDB].[dbo].[MyTable].
C:UsersRedirectionrittg2DocumentsVisual Studio 2012ProjectsMySolutionMyDBdboViewsvw_MyView_1.sql
but of course this is a bogus message since the view can clearly read from an object in the same database whether using 2-, 3-part naming (or 4-part naming for that matter).
How can I resolve these errors without editing the objects before running Schema Compare? (there are hundreds of them).

How does one create a linked server to an Access 2007 (accdb) file? I am aware that to create one to a mdb file, the code would be -EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
@server = 'SEATTLE Mktg',
@provider = 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
@srvproduct = 'OLE DB Provider for Jet',
@datasrc = 'C:MSOfficeAccessSamplesNorthwind.mdb'
GO
What is the corresponding code for Access 2007 accdb files?

I have a masterpage that has no doctype, because I want to have a table with some fixed height TDs and some variable height TDs (this kind of table only seems to be possible in quirks mode, with no doctype). My problem is the SSRS web part, it has the web part title, but the actual report is not there! as soon as i put in the doctype, it renders normally.
Is there any way to have a reporting services web part render a report without a doctype?

Hello,
i am facing a bizarre problem, accessing data from a remote server which has been linked to my sql.
My SQL server is 2005 and the remote server is SQL 2000.
i have linked the remote server (called LinkedServer) so that when i run this query:
SELECT * FROM LinkedServer.SomeDB.dbo.SomeTable
executes successfully! However, when i run a similar query like this:
SELECT Column1 AS Col1,
LinkedServer.SomeDB.dbo.SomeTable.Column2 as Col2,
Alias.Column3 as Col3
FROM LinkedServer.SomeDB.dbo.SomeTable
INNER JOIN LinkedServer.SomeDB.dbo.SomeOtherTable1 ON LinkedServer.SomeDB.dbo.SomeTable.Column3 = LinkedServer.SomeDB.dbo.SomeOtherTable1.Column3
INNER JOIN LinkedServer.SomeDB.dbo.SomeOtherTable2 AS Alias
ON LinkedServer.SomeDB.dbo.SomeTable.Column3 = Alias.Column3
It gives me this error:
The multi-part identifier "LinkedServer.SomeDB.dbo.SomeTable.Column2" could not be bound.
The multi-part identifier "LinkedServer.SomeDB.dbo.SomeTable.Column3" could not be bound.
I have noticed that this error is generated only for the selected columns whose path has either been repeated (e.g. "LinkedServer.SomeDB.dbo.SomeTable.Column2" as opposed to "Column2") or for columns which are from aliased tables.
What is going on?!?!?!??!?!?!
Any Help would be tremendously appreciated!!!! 8..)

I would like to be able to use the Query Designer without having to close it out to test the query.
I seem to recall using Query Designer in 2000 as a stand-alone app outside of Enterprise Manager.
How can I use Query Designer AND have the results show up in the same window?

I need to name make the name of a column the same as the name of a table from the result of a sql query.. here is the assignment question below..I can't figure out how to get the name of the table to be inputed as the column name..
Write a script that uses dynamic SQL to return a single column that represents the number of rows in the first table in the current database. The script should automatically choose the table that appears first alphabetically, and it should exclude tables named dtproperties and sysdiagrams. [highlight=#ffff11]Name the column CountOfTable, where Table is the chosen table name.[/highlight]
Hint: Use the sys.tables catalog view.
I can figure out the rest. and actually have alredy done it, but i cannot figure out how to do the part that is highlighted above. I looked at lots of things on google to figure it out but no luck..Can some just give me some directlon or an example..

We migrated a MS Access 2003 mdb into MS Access 2007. The mdb has linked tables to SQL Server via a DSN and utilizes a mdw file. In 2003, the username/password is "passed" to SQL Server, so the UID/PWD that is used for opening the mdb, is used in SQL Server.
Opening the same file in 2007 using the same mdw, gives a secondary login on SQL Server.
Is there a way to have MS Access 2007 pass the UID/PWD to SQL Server on linked tables, the same way that 2003 does?
Thanks!

Does any one know of a way that a group of my developers can use this without giving them access to the rest of Enterprise manager?
Want to give them access to write queries and they are all Access developers so that I have to do as little training as possible then letting them have Query designer would keep them in their nice little world without hassing me to much.
Cheers for any help.

I use the Report Wizard to generate reports. Within the "Design the Query" screen, I try the query statement as :
exec mydb.dbo.rptSales @fortheyear
It shows me an error: Implicit conversion from data type sql_variant to smallint is not allowed. Use the CONVERT function to run this query.
The stored procedure of rptSales is
CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.rptSales

.......
The rptSales has been tested OK on SQL Server Management Studio.
Actually, I have other similiar stored procedures using smallint as a parameter, and I can use the Report Wizard to generate reports, except the above one.
How can I fix this?
Thanks a lot,

Greetings all,
I have successfully been able to use a SELECT query to see tables on a remote (Linked) server. Now, I want to be able to join those records with a WHERE clause to the same tables I have on my local database. The idea here is to be able to see current data on my local database(which is not current data), which resides in the remote database(which is current data). Here is what I have so far:
SELECT top 10 * from LinkServer.MC_Card.webuser.POS_TX
But, I'm not sure how to SELECT from two tables. Would I do a SELECT from the local database WHERE all records = records on the remote database?
Not sure how to do this. Is this what would be considered a Distributed Query? And how would I make this work with joins like the existing joins I have to the tables in my local database?
This is new territory for me. Sorry if this is such a newbie question.
Thanks,
Bruce

I'm using MS SQL Server Express and I've added a linked server. (I created the linked server by right mouse clicking on Server Objects, selecting SQL and entering the SQL2 as the name.) Now I'm trying to query a linked table. The following query works.
SELECT * FROM SQL2.PA.dbo.Counties
This one doesn't:
Select * from OPENQUERY(SQL2,"SELECT * FROM SQL2.PA.dbo.Counties")
Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
Incorrect syntax near 'SELECT * FROM SQL2.PA.dbo.Counties'.
Can you tell me why?

Hi guys I need some help connecting to a LINKED SERVER. I have setup the LINKED SERVER via Enterprise Manager. This is what I did. I know this is a difficult thing to explain so I will try my best and attempt to give you a good understanding of the scenario.
1. I have three servers named DEVUK, DEVUS and DEVASIA.
2. DEVUK I can connect to via my computer and contains a databases called GOD.
3. I went into DEVASIA server and went to Administrative Tools > New ODBC Connection and called it DEVASIAUK.
4. Setup everything in there and tested the connection which completed successfully.
5. I am now on my computer where I have connected to DEVASIA and gone into Server Objects > Linked Servers.
6. I created a new LINKED SERVER and under GENERAL TAB have stated DEVASIAUK and Provider as SQL Server.
7. Security I have used NT_AUTHORITYand option BE MADE USING THE LOGINS CURRENT SECURITY CONTEXT.
I have the SQL Command: SELECT * FROM DEVASIAUK ... tblLocalTable
Am I doing this right? Or am I missing something here? I am new to Linked Servers but it shows it is executing a query but then it says Login Failed.
Appreciate any help, thanks, Onam

Hello all
I've got SQL Server 7.0 SP1 installed (in a NT4 SP6 environment).
Recently, it came up with error whenever I try to open a table or a view (return all rows) inside the Enterprise Manager. The descriptive (NOT!) error message is like this:
"The query cannot be executed because some files are either missing or not registered", and on pressing "help",
the help files report
"Query Designer cannot locate your query files and cannot run your query"
I have tried re-booting the machine and upgrading mmc.exe to version 1.2 (from 1.1), but both in vain.
Can anyone shed some lights please?

Checked out BOL on this issue, but not enough info received to troubleshoot. Hoping someone out there has some input.
This issue is only happening on the server side not the client. Also, it suddenly appeared on three different machines.
Query Designer:
"An unexpected error happened during this operation" [Query} - Query Designer encountered a Query error: Unspecified error.
The how: In a database, go to tables and select a table known to have data right click on mouse and select Open Table, return all rows. This is when the error appears.
BOL states the the file may be corrupt or from a non-supported version of SQL Server EM. Nothing was installed on these servers and we're still on SP2. This error just all of a sudden appeared and spread to 3 different machines...
Another issue is the Return to Top function is disabled. This function provides the maximum number of rows to fetch.
Any assistance would be appreciated! Thanks.

Hi,
My database has just recentrly been upgraded to SQL 2005 and i have noticed a change in the interface when writing a query in "Query Designer"
For one of our tables we have a 'Time' field. I know that time only doesnt exist yet and upon insertion a default date of 30/12/1899 is automatically inserted. Im happy with that!
My concern is with Query Designer. If i build a query using the criteria grid and for the time field i filer on >=13:00:00 (example), the SQL that it creates looks like this:
(TIME >= CONVERT(DATETIME, '2007-10-17 13:00:00', 102))
As you can see is automatically inserts the current date instead of 30/12/1899. This obviously causes my sql to not work unless i manually change the date in the SQL to 1899-12-30
In SQL 2000 i did not have to do this, it would automatically write the SQL as :
(TIME >= CONVERT(DATETIME, '1899-12-30 13:00:00', 102))
Even if i enter 30/12/1899 13:00:00 into the criteria grid it still converts to current date.
Is there a setting somewhere for the Query Designer so that it defaults to 30/12/1899??
Regards,
Eddie S

I am having a problem with what appears to be a very trivial task in the graphical query designer. When I enter =@County into the filter column quotes are automatically added like = '@County' which the makes the query string inaccurate (looking for a literal County = "@County" in the where clause).
I am using Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 with the newest service packs and retreiving data from an Oracle 10G database.
If I remove the quotes and run the query through the generic query designer in my SQL reporting project I get the error "ORA-00936: missing expression".
It is as if the SQL Reporting Project does not understand the meaning of the @ symbol for entering a parameter.
What am I missing here? I thought @ specified that this would be a parameter and you then just needed to supply the values for the parameter.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I need to query a linked server (which is Oracle) with some parameters. When I try to use a four part SQL statement, it does not work. But when I try to use OPEENQUERY statement, it works just fine. Problem comes when I need to send some parameters with the OPENQUERY'S 'query' part.
For example, the following statement works just fine:
SELECT *
FROM OPENQUERY(OracleLinked, "SELECT ACCOUNTNUMBER, POSTINGDATE FROM ORA_SERVER.FINANCEENTRY WHERE DATEOFENTRY BETWEEN '2000.01.01' AND '2000.01.31'")
But If I try to use:
DECLARE @DynamicSQL VARCHAR(1000),
@StartDate VARCHAR(10),
@EndDate VARCHAR(10)
SET @StartDate = '2000.01.01'
SET @EndDate = '2000.01.31'
SELECT @DynamicSQL = "SELECT ACCOUNTNUMBER, POSTINGDATE FROM ORA_SERVER.FINANCEENTRY WHERE DATEOFENTRY BETWEEN '" + @StartDate + "' AND '" + @EndDate + "'"
--SELECT @DynamicSQL
SELECT *
FROM OPENQUERY(OracleLinked, @DynamicSQL)
it does not work.
Well, I did some research and found out that OPENQUERY does not accept variables for its arguments. See the link below:(http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/psdk/sql/ts_oa-oz_5xix.htm)
Then is there any way I can accomplish what I want to on the Remote server?
Thanks in advance for your help.
