SQL 2012 :: Architecture / Design To Maintain Multiple Version Of Application Database

Jun 5, 2014

We have a Silverlight based application which currently supports only one production version. Idea is to support three concurrent versions of the same application and user will switch to the newer versions based on their interest or they can still continue with the older version.

We still have to use the existing database for all these three versions.

What is the best way to architect this so that we can differentiate the code between the versions and still keep the data in sync and run all the versions in parallel.

Maintain A Consistent DB Connection Through Application Lifecycle

Nov 10, 2006

Hey everyone, I'm new to .NET and I've recently inheirited a rather large and busy asp.net website.  I was asked to add a testimonials section on each page that will randomly pull a testimonial out of the db.  This is fine, however, I'm getting random errors about the DB connection either being closed or connecting.  Here is the code for the testimonials class: 1 public SqlDataReader GetTestimonials(ref SqlDataReader reader, int iCatID, string sLanguageType)2 {3 SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("sp_DVX_Testimonials_Fetch", Connection);4 cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;5
6 cmd.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@Cat_ID", iCatID));7 cmd.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@LanguageType", sLanguageType));8
9 reader = cmd.ExecuteReader();10
11 return reader;12 } I know this isn't the best way to do this (especially for each page[this site averages about 1000 hits a day]), so I was wondering was--is there a way to maintain a single DB connection that's set up in the Application_Start that will maintain the connection so I don't have to worry about this error.  If not, does anyone and any ideas as to what would help? Thanks in advance!

Package Design Architecture

Oct 8, 2007

Can anybody give me design ideas on the following?

I have numerous tasks, any one of which can fail. I want to point them all (via 'Failure' constraint) to a SendMail task for a "failure notification" email. This I have setup, and is working fine. Now, I want to have a changing message for the email's body (MessageSource) to say "Process A has failed", or "Process B has failed", etc.

My initial thought was to add a variable, then add a ScriptTask between each task and the single SendMailTask, have the script update the variable, and have the MessageSource (body of email) mapped to the variable. Is this the proper way to go about this? Seems like if I have 20 processes that could fail, then I'll have to add 20 script files; this becomes a bit unwieldy the more processes that I want to monitor.

Is there a better way to accmoplish this?

Thx,
Mojo

MS SQL Server - Application Architecture Issue

Sep 29, 2004

Thank you in advance for any advice that is provided from by the Dev Shed Users.

I'm on a development team that has been having an ongoing discussion/argument about the best way to handle our users needs while in Europe.

We are developing a Purchase Order application in VB.net using MSSQL Server 2000. We have about 5 out of 10 users that take a six-week trip to Europe. While in Europe the users will need to use the application. However, there are some cities they visit where the network connection will be slim to none.

The ongoing argument is as follows:

-Should we create a server running SQL Server 2000 for them to take Europe and sync up the two databases when they return?

-Should we create a version of the application running MS Access?

-Should we create a version of the application running MySQL?

-Should we do something completely different that we haven't thought of?

-Also, I'm not sure if the following is a possible architecture, from what I've found online I haven't seen an architecture that runs both SQL Server and Access (hope this makes sense):

Build the VB.net application running a shell of the database in Access (locally) that temporarily houses the data and tracks the database transactions made while using the system. Then upon closing the application a ?module? would execute that would perform the transactions made by the user on SQL Server. Then we could dump the SQL Server Database to an Access database before they go to Europe, and run their changes on the SQL Server Database when they return. Users at home will not be making changes to the same data as those in Europe.

Again any help would be greatly appreciated.

Design Advice For Report Architecture

Jan 24, 2008

Any design suggestions for the best way to architect this report using SQL Reporting Services 2005 are appreciated!

My website features a catalog of roughly 50,000 items, each of which may be appear in a list of search results or in a detailed view. There are counters on the pages that update totals for such appearances and track other item-specific information in several tables in a SQL database. The catalog of items changes frequently, so the list of item IDs is never exactly the same from month to month.

I've been asked to produce a monthly report of this data for each of the items in the catalog, with reports for the current and previous months (for many years) accessible at all times. Some -- but not all -- items are useful for one purpose or another and so can be considered as belonging to a group of items. Although I have not yet been asked to create a report that aggregates the values for all Group members into a single report for that Group, I can clearly see it would be valuable and will be requested soon.

To ensure the report captures the data for an entire month, it must be run at the very end of each month. That means I will need to run the report using a Schedule that kicks off the process at 12:01am every 1st of the month. The report must be processed and stored for later retrieval and rendering on demand.

Considering the number of items and the indefinite length of time the report data must be retained, my question is really what's the best way to set all this up?

Should I create a report for each item separately? That would mean the scheduled task would have to somehow discover the current list of item IDs (which is available via query from the database) and create and process (but not render) a report for each (passing the item ID as a report parameter?), adding it to the report history. Although each report would be small take only a short time to run, overall that seems like it would take a long time to run and create a huge number of reports to store each month.

Or should I create a single 'master' report that contains all the data for every item for the month, and then use the item ID as a filter on the data when it is rendered? While that means only one report is created each month and added to the history, it would be a much larger report and take much longer to run (with more potential for timeouts and errors to scuttle the whole report). It also means all the data for the entire report has to be loaded every time the report is rendered, even though only 1/50,000 of the data (the data for 1 of the 50,000 items) will actually be viewed with any given rendering. But that would seem overly cumbersome, slow, and wastefully band-width intensive.

Any alternatives, suggestions, considerations, etc. -- all welcome!

Thanks

Help With The Design/creation Of A Database For My Application. [Experts Needed]

Apr 17, 2004

Hello, I was wondering if any of you experts might assist me in properly creating a database for my application. I've been pondering for a few days on how to accomplish this, but it seems that it doesnt have to be as complex as I am thinking...I just have to know how.

First off, I want to populate a dataset from a database in which I can databind to a datalist or repeater control. My datalist or repeater will have the following information in the ItemTemplate. Each ItemTemplate will consist of a table with 1 row with 3 columns cells. In each cell, the data will be laid out as accordingly.

[Unique Number] [Description ][Price ]
1000 XYZ $100.00
1001 ZXY $250.00

When the datalist or repeater is populated, it will need to be tried against a value that the user selects. For instance, the user selects 100,000 from a listbox and fetches the next page which will show the diagram above...he/she will see those results. However, if the user selects 110,000, the diagram above will have for the most part the same Unique Number and Descriptions, but the prices will vary. The reason I say for the most part with the Unique Number and Descriptions, is because I want to later be able to add admin access to add additional rows and appropriate prices to each Unique Number and Description.

Now the tricky part is, I could just add the listbox values to a table as a unique key and associated them with the Unique Number, Description and Price, however there are about 50 different options the user can select from and approx 50 different rows of Unique Numbers, Descriptions and Price . So you can see, I would have to set up the diagram each time for every possible selection from the listbox, which wouldnt really be efficient I presume.

I want to be able to populate the datalist or repeater so it could have say 50 Unique Numbers with Descriptions and Price at selection 100,000. And also that it might only populate with 45 Unique Numbers and Descrptions and Price at selection 110,000 because the 5 missing dont pertain to the selection of 110,000. I am trying to do it this way because at sometime, I want the admin to be able to add/delete a Unique Number, a Description for it and a corresponding price that correlates to the selection from the listbox.

Thanks for all your help guys. I really appreciate it. For the most part I understand what Im doing, I just need to be walked thru it a bit. Thanks again!

SQL Server 2012 :: Return Multiple Messages To Client Application?

Jun 9, 2014

I have a procedure where after processing, i am required to send multiple message to calling application.

For ex:

create procedure test as
(@a as int,
@b as int
@c as int )
/*
some transformations */
print 'variable a is' + @a;
print 'variable b is' + @b;
print 'variable c is' + @c;

I am only providing a sample of return messages, but in reality there a lot more messages where a string and a parameter value need to concatenated.Unfortunately print is not allowing to concatenate parameter value.I can use RaiseError, but these messages are not really any error messages.

i tried to concatenate all message and output it using OUT type parameter, but the length of all messages combined exceeds 10000 characters.

Is there any other alternate to send these messages out to application?

SQL 2012 :: Maintain Indexes When AlwaysON Is In Place

Aug 4, 2015

I have a new cluster (2 sync, 2 async) with about 50 databases going from 1 to 200gb ( all of the objects are compressed).That at sql server 2012, sp1 CU7.I have several drives for logs with 200gb of space in there...I am having issues at rebuilding indexes on this env, ie, I have a table with the clustered index heavily fragmented (~80%), and the table has about 60gb of data, uncompressed that should be about 160gb.

The index rebuild is creating a log file big enough as to consume all the space that I have for logs, and that is only 1 table, so for sure my old process to maintain indexes (ola.hallengren code) won't work on this scenario.

Database Design: Multiple DB's Vs One DB?

Jul 3, 1999

Good Morning to Everyone :-)

We're having DB Design discussions in our office for a new project. Basically, we're trying to decide on a DB Solution that allows us to manage multiple online communities. We expect to have several hundred thousand users (about 100k per community), and each user will have associations to user-specific content on the community level.

At some point, we expect to have to export one or several communites into their own Datasource. This will be a downstream event that will not affect us in the immediate future.

In terms of administering the DB and each community, we're having trouble deciding between generating this DB in one inclusive datasource vs creating multiple datasources (one for each community). With that in mind, any advice or suggestions that anyone may have on this subject would be appreciated.

FYI -- We're running CF v4 and MSSQL v7.

Our concerns are as follows:

Data Structure Issues (what abilities/SQL functions will we lose when implementing multiple DB's vs one DB? We definitely have a need to be relational at every level of this application.)

DB Performance (will a one DB solution run more efficiently on MS SQL v7 with high traffic than several DB's?)

Administration (It's our understanding that multiple DB's will cause us to lose our ability to perform table joins, etc. Are there any other shortcomings that we should be aware of?)

Stability Issues (We've heard that one DB vs Multiple DB's will have fewer threads. We've also heard that MS SQL v7 becomes increasingly unstable as more threads get created. Is this true, or is our understanding of this issue wrong?)

CF Integration Issues (How will CF v4 react to handling a large amount of high-traffic DSN's vs. having one DSN and the same amount of traffic?)

Thanks in advance for all your help. We look forward to hearing from you.

DB Design :: How To Restrict Multiple Access To Same Database

Sep 16, 2015

I have a single database and 5 user which use this database for DDL and DML operations.

The problem we are facing here is, every time a user need to do some work in this database he/she had to ask(manually) to rest of the 4 users whether they are doing some task over the same DB or not. Sometime due to communication gap one user open any transaction which creates a deadlock for another user to execute any query over the same tables in this DBI want to get rid of this problem by making it configurable from SQL Server part so that if any user which is already accessing this DB, so the other user don't get access to it,  kind of Mutually exclusive behavior.

How to do this.

Database Design- Referencing Multiple Database

Sep 27, 2007

Hi All,
I am designing database where few of the master tables will reside in different database or in case different server. Scenario is
Server "A" with Database "A" may host the "Accounts" table.
Server "B" with Database "B" may host the "Product" table.
I am designing database "Project" which will hosted in Server "A".
My application requires this master tables [readonly access] as data inserted in my application refers this tables. Also there are reports to be generated which refer this tables.
How do i design my database and sql queries?
I am thinking of approach of having equivalent tables created in my database and writing service which keep tables in my database in sync. This will ensure good perfomance during transaction and reports as they will need to refer this table locally as opposed to different database or different server.

Any thoughts on above approach?? or any better/standard way for such scenarios ?

Thanks in Advance. Your inputs will be of great help.

Database Design - Multiple Vs. Single Database

Apr 12, 2007

Hello:

My client has a db with the following structure:

Online US Searchable Map of the 50 US States. Users search criteria is the following: Query records by selecting state, county, then record. Each County table has 10-20 tables. All databases combined = 500MB and TLogs = 100MB.

How would you re-design a relational DB where users could query data by state-county-record. Currenty the DB's are created by the County of each state which creates hundreds of DB's in SQLServer with no realtionship to each US state. What would be the best design to ensure good performance, data integrity and maintenance? Would you create 1 DB with all 50 states, create 4 DB's and divide by region(N,S,E,W), 50 DB's of each state or leave it as is with each county it's on DB? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

thx

SQL 2012 :: Approximate Hours Per Month To Monitor And Maintain Health Of Databases?

Jul 8, 2014

Based on the description below on average how many hours a month would it take to monitor and maintain the MSSQL Server databases?

Description of IT infrastructure.All Windows Servers and MSSQL Servers are up to date on patches and best practices.

Corporate site with 3 remote sites.

All remote sites have one DC and one MSSQL Server.

The corporate site has one MSSQL Server.

Replication is performed between the remote MSSQL databases and the corporate office MSSQL database.

There is no in-house DBA. All DBA services will have to be outsourced. I am trying to determine what is reasonable in budgeting for time involved for this service.

There is one project written in MS Access using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) with the backend residing on these database.

The question is on average approximately how many hours a month would it take to monitor and maintain the health of the MSSQL Servers database by a MSSQL DBA. The DBA will not have to create any user reporting, queries, etc. Just maintain the existing MSSQL Servers database.

SQL 2012 :: Database Design - Choosing A Primary Key?

Apr 30, 2014

choosing a primary key for the database which i am designing.

I have few tables which contains 5 -15 fields out of it 3 - 9 columns combined to form the uniqueness of the row.

All are un-related tables. Three parent tables connect with 20 child non-related child tables.

I believe it would not be a wise choice to choose 3 to 9 fields for primary key. But if i use an auto increment as a key will there be of any use as it might never be used to fetch rows. Then why do i still have to go with that?

Or Is it ok to create a primary key of upto 5 attributes?

The types of claims related to their own individual parent table. (individual because each type of claim tracks completely different information) does anyone have an idea on how to set this up?

Sample Structure

table = Claim
Field 1 = ClaimTypeA_ID
Field 2 = ClaimTypeB_ID
Field 3 = ClaimTypeC_ID
Field 4 = ClaimTypeD_ID
Field 5 = ClaimTypeE_ID
Field 6 = ClaimTypeF_ID

The six field relate to the 6 different tables ID.

If I do this how do I store the data? put 0's in each of the claim types that are not used???

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

After export, and login to the SQL server, we see all the tables has his name as the schema but not dbo.

I assume when export, the default schema should be dbo. but apparently not.
I went to the setting and explicitly make the default schema for the windows group user to dbo. But he tried again, it still use his username as schema prefix to the tables. just wondering why is this?
