SQL 2012 :: Can't Access Linked Server When Connecting Via Alias

May 27, 2014

As a database developer, I have so many databases that I "own" scattered across various servers that it''s getting difficult to remember where all of my databases reside. It doesn't work that the DBAs have taken to some very hard to remember server naming conventions.

I was going to create aliases via the configuration manager, but it turns out the DBAs overwrite my entries each night with THEIR aliases and they won't add any for my use.

So I decided to simply add some records to my host file so that instead of having to connect to "SERVER-AD_DADF-DAFDASS" I can just use "CustomerA".

This solution seems to work until I tried to access a linked server. If I connect to the main server via it's actual name, I can hit the remote/linked server with no issue. However, if I connect to the main server using it's alias, connection to the remote/linked server fails with: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'.

The linked server is set up to use current security context and I'm not logging into the alias any differently that I do when using the actual server name.

Connecting To An Access DB Using Linked Server Gives The Error, System Resource Exceeded

Oct 18, 2007

I am using SQL 2000 (Standard Edition, SP4) and have created a linked server to access a Access MDB file. When I run a simple query against that server, I get the error:

Server: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: System resource exceeded.]
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' ICommandText::Execute returned 0x80004005: ].

I am able to connect to this same Access MDB file from another SQL server (SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition, SP4). I have compared the two servers and they both have the same version of MDAC (2.8) and the same version of the Jet OLE DB Provider.

Any idea why this would work from one server and not from the other. Also, I was able to perform the same queries from the first server a week back.

Thanks in advance for you help.

SQL 2012 :: Connecting To Local Server Instance From Access

Aug 4, 2014

First time I've tried doing this - I have SQL Server 2012 installed on my local machine with an instance running (which was set up under an administrator account, not mine, which has no admin rights), and I'm trying to create a linked table from Access (also on the local machine) to a table on the server.

I tried creating a DSN using Windows Authentication, using the server name which is the same as my computer name, and got the error "Error 18452, Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication".

I then created a SQL authentication user ID and password, and tried the same thing using that instead, and got "Login failed for user <myusername>"

Is there some particular setting on the local instance I need to change to allow this kind of connection, or do I need to use something other than the server name to connect, such as an IP address? Remember that I have no admin access on this machine so any solution would have to avoid requiring that.

SQL 2012 :: Linked Servers Connecting To High Availability Group

Dec 16, 2014

I have a HA Listener which is visible and can be connected to, it has a read only secondary on a different subnet so when connecting to it we use the applicationintent = readonly and multisubnetfailover = true.

Trying to connect it as a linked server is giving me problems. I tried putting the extra info into the provider string but keep getting the failure to initialise error. I am trying to link SQL2012 to a 2012 HA group but will also need to connect from a sql2008 server as well

Transact SQL :: Self Linked Server For Purpose Of Alias?

Oct 2, 2015

basically, we have two databases, one with fix name, eg. DB1 in all environments, and another is named with prefix based on environment, eg. DB2_DEV, DB2_TEST, that is generated by some managed application.

Then we have queries or view/SPs residing in the first database, eg. DB1 that access database resources from the second database, DB2_***. Both databases are residing in the same SQL instance.

Currently, we have hardcoded the database name in the query but would prefer not to manually rename or write other scripts to update the query with the correct database name when deploying to other environments.

For example:

SELECT * FROM DB2_DEV.dbo.vAccounts
When deploy to TEST, we need to update the query to:
SELECT * FROM DB2_TEST.dbo.vAccounts

So, I looked at Synonyms but it seems it can only create 'alias' for tables or views, and not database.

Hence, last thought is to create self linked server, so I can write my query like below and setup the linked server accordingly.

SELECT * FROM SRCDB.dbo.vAccounts

Any consideration to think of, eg. performance, security, etc?

Server Alias/linked Server ALWAYS Uses A Distributed Query?

Apr 4, 2008

Can someone please shed some light on what seems to me to be a common requirement.

If I create an alias or linked server to Server1 - say Alias1 - on Server1 and then use that name in a query on Server1, a remote/distributed query is always used (even though we are running on the local server and that overhead is completely unnecessary).

Is SQL Server really not capable of deciding that
select * from Alias1.db1.dbo.table1
and
select * from Server1.db1.dbo.table1
should be optimized and executed exactly the same when Alias1 is Server1, but that it is a distributed query ONLY when Alias1 is really referring to a remote server? I realize that the four part name is not necessary when I am referring to objects on the current server, but I am trying to write code that is server instance independent.

It just seems that if that is not possible, then the only way to create system independent stored procs that can run in dev, staging, and production environments and work with multiple databases on multiple servers is to create all sorts of scripts to regenerate all the procs whenever you move a database between servers?

If SQL Server is even close to the enterprise big iron server that MS now claims it is, it surely needs to support running in dev, staging, and production environments and work with multiple databases on multiple servers?!

I'm really looking for someone to tell me I'm missing something simple, and of course you can do this - but complex workarounds are invited too :-)
This is not something I am investigating as an academic exercise, I am already doing this, but I have to figure out how to do it better because with all these unnecessary distributed queries, performance is horrible.

Thanks
Sean

SQL 2012 :: Could Not Connect To Server Using Alias

Feb 17, 2015

I had two servers, in which SQL Servers are installed. I created a alias for server

Server 1 : test1.sqlcloud.com (Alias name with port no other than 1433)
Server 2 : test2.sqlcloud.com (Alias name with port no other than 1433)

I can connect to the servers using the port. for ex server1 to server2 and viceversa using "test2.sqlcloud.com,port". But I could not connect to the server by only specifying the alias name ("test2.sqlcloud.com"). When I am connecting I am getting the following error.

SQL 2012 :: Using Alias For SSAS Server Connection

Jul 14, 2015

I know how to create an alias for a SQL server instance, so instead of MyServerMyInstanceName, I can type MyInstanceName into my SSMS connection box. But SSAS does not allow me to connect with the alias.

I've looked all over and found plenty of documentation that SQL 2005 and 2008 doesn't allow the use of instance aliases for SSAS. I've even found notes from Microsoft saying "we'll fix this in a future edition." I have not found any indications or notes as to whether or not this has been fixed.

Can aliases be created for 2012 SSAS? Or is this still not available?

SQL Server 2012 :: UPDATE Using Table Alias

Sep 21, 2015

I have some stored procedures that do updates using table aliases, like this:

UPDATE TableAlias
SET ColVal = 1
FROM RealTable AS TableAlias
WHERE TableAlias.ColVal <> 1

This allows me to include joins and stuff in the update (not shown) and make it all more readable for me.

It all works fine, and the SSMS parser says it's fine. But I also have another script which looks at sys.sql_expression_dependencies and sys.objects to find stored procedures with invalid object references (see below), and it's understandably saying that all of the above type stored procedures have invalid references.

SELECT
OBJECT_NAME(DEP.referencing_id) AS referencing_name,
DEP.referenced_entity_name
FROM sys.sql_expression_dependencies AS DEP
WHERE
-- Only validate local references:
(
DEP.referenced_database_name = DB_NAME()

[Code] ....

So I have a couple questions.

1. Is the UPDATE syntax I'm using kosher?
2. Can you recommend any updates to my stored procedure validation script that will better accommodate table aliases like mine?

Linked Server To Access

Nov 5, 2001

Hi,

I am running SQL Server 7.0 and am trying to set up a linked server to an access database so I can use a SQL7 stored procedure to update the access database.

I create the linked server as:
sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'LinkedServer',
@srvproduct = N' ',
@provider = N'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
@datasrc = N'MyServerest2.mdb',
@catalog = N''
GO

I then try setting up the security in the security tabs to impersonate a user I have set up in the access database.

I also have NT security on the directory of the access database to limit the users who can access the directory.

My problem is that when I try to run the sql:
"select * from LinkedServer...IMS" (IMS is the tablename) I get the following error:
Server: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file 'ASPECT04accpactestest2.mdb'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data.]

If I add "Everyone" tpo the security level on the NT directory it works fine, so I obviously have a security problem.

Can anyone tell me what user the sql is running under.

any ideas of the best way to set this up.

many thanks for the help

Linked Server Access DB

Feb 9, 2007

After converting to SQL Server 2005 and VS2005 I am having a problem connecting to Linked Servers for Access databases. I have searched and read everything I can find, but the solution is still not evident. I have a lot of data integration and data conversion procedures to run and I am stuck at this point not understanding exactly what the problem is and how to resolve it. I believe it is somehow related to "double hop" and permissions with .NET. Many of the discussions are related to using .ASP but that is not involved in this situation.

The Linked Server is defined using the UNC path. The machines are not in a domain. They are in the same LAN segment. Connections will be made without using a security context is specified. A sample Linked Server definition:

EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'ACCESS EDUCATION', @srvproduct=N'OLE DB Provider for Jet', @provider=N'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', @datasrc=N'\Tacir2k3InfrastructureDatabasesJuly 2005 DatabasesEducationEduDb2005_TR_Db.mdb'

The error:

OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "ACCESS EDUCATION" returned message "The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '\Tacir2k3InfrastructureDatabasesJuly 2005 DatabasesEducationEduDb2005_TR_Db.mdb'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data.".

Machine 1 (Developer Workstation): XP SP2 with latest security patches; SS Management Studio, VS2005

Machine 2 (SQL Server server): Windows 2003 Server with SS2005. The Linked Servers are defined on an SS2005 instance on this machine.

Machine 3 (File server): Windows 2003 Server that contains the Access DB files

When I run SS Management Studio on Machine 2 (the database server), I have no problem accessing the Linked Server pointing to an Access DB file on Machine 3 and can compile or run SPs referencing the Linked Server.

When I run SS Management Studio on Machine 1 to execute an SP that references the Linked Servers, I get the above error.

When I use Machine 1 to compile an SP that references the Linked Server, I get the above error.

I tried granting Everyone Full Control to the folder that contains all the Access database subfolders but I get the same error when running from Machine 1.

SQL 2012 :: ETL Through Linked Server

Dec 28, 2014

I am currently trying to optimize an ETL process that pulls around 150 tables from a OLAP-esque system through a linked server. It's the AllScripts Touchworks EMR database, if that makes a difference. I am having a difficult time fitting an incremental load into a reasonable window of time. For instance, one table, which has around 40 columns, and a total of about 50 million rows, takes around an hour just to pull one day's worth of records when filtering on a single datetime field. The query is:

SELECT *
FROM OPENQUERY([linkedserver],
'
SELECT *
FROM Works.dbo.Visit
WHERE StartDttm BETWEEN ''2014-12-23'' AND ''2014-12-24''
'
)

Which, in the end, returns only about 30k records. However, in trying different approaches, I decided to test out bcp using the following code:

bcp Works.dbo.Visit out f:etlvisit.dat -n -S linkedserver.this extracted the entire table to flat file, but it only took about 15 minutes....add on another 3-4 to load that into the database on my end. Now, my ability to see what's happening on the remote server's end is very limited, but I know that the server has much higher specs than mine. They have 96GB memory vs. my 32GB, twice the cores I've got, etc. So how is this running faster by pulling the entire table over?

I figured that even in the worst case scenario of a full table scan, picking 30k rows out of the table that match a single criteria would certainly run faster than bringing the whole thing over. This isn't isolated to a single table, either. I finished running a test of the incremental extract/load vs. full extract/load via bcp (200GB of data). The incremental takes about 7 hours, bcp takes about 2 hours.

The second Part - Eventually I want to create an SQL database, which is comprised of tables which use (point to) MS ACCESS as there datasource. Is that a clear question? Am I making any sense?? PLease let me know as I am scratching my head a lot at the moment!!

I set it up and tested on a test machine first and all works fine. I then did the same on our production box and receive the error below.

Server: Msg 7303, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Could not initialize data source object of OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0'.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: Not a valid account name or password.]

I then set it up on another production box and it worked for a while but now I get a different error.

Server: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: Cannot open database ''.
It may not be a database that your application recognizes, or the file may be corrupt.]

Is there a server level setting that could be different on these machines that could be causing this?

Access Dabase Linked To SQL Server

Jan 6, 2005

Hi,

I have an Access database (name "Shipping") linked to SQL Server. The Access database is not secured. My access file is located on the same machine as the instance of SQL Server, in a shared folder that can be accessed by any user. The file permissions are set to full control for Everyone. I linked Access with the following procedure:

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
@server = 'Shipping',
@provider = 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
@srvproduct = 'OLE DB Provider for Jet',
@datasrc = 'C:ShippingShipping BackEnd.mdb'

then modified the linked server login mapping with:

EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'Shipping','false',NULL,'Admin',NULL

Now, since I have domain administrator permissions, I can run a stored procedure in SQL Server that does a Select in the Access database without any problem. But when a normal user tries to run the procedure, he gets an error #7399. If I give this user domain administrator rights, he's able to run the procedure. There is something I don't get, with normal user permission, this user can open the Access database through the shared folder...

Thanks
