SQL 2012 :: Cannot Connect With Read Only Intent When Using Listener Name
May 6, 2014
I have an issue when connecting with application Intent=readonly when using Listener name. I can connect to the read only secondary with application Intent=readonly if I use the server name. It gives a host does not exist error when using listener. This happens only if I am using the application Intent keyword. I can connect for normal readwrite operation using listener name.

I setup an AG with a listener (AO1) on three servers.
Server1 = Primary, Readable Secondary = No
Server2 = Secondary, Readable Secondary = Read-intent only
Server3 = Secondary, Readable Secondary = Read-intent only
Connecting to AO1 with default settings, I end up on Server1.
If I attempt to connect to AO1 with specifying ;ApplicationIntent=ReadOnly (with or without specifying the db name) in SSMS, still lands me on Server1.
Also on topic, in this scenario I would actually want Server1 to be a readable secondary (in the event of a fail-over). So If I did set it as Yes, even If I do get the issue above working, won't I always land on Server1 then?

I have a 2 node cluster with 2 standalone 2k14 instances having alwayson setup. As per client requirement we have created a client access point with a cname alias in dns to connect to secondary replica. Now, everytime whenerver the roles switch over one has to manually move this resource from the previous secondary node to the new secondary node. This is tedious, and should not be done manually either, so I am looking for a way to automate it so that as soon as the role switches over, the resource group after some time should also switch over to the current secondary.
Env details
xa (current primary)
y2a (secondary)
client access point (resource group): aglreadtest

After manual AG fail-over from primary to secondary the application is not able to connect the listener name for atleast for 5 - 10 mins
The telnet fails during this time from app server, the listener ip is on muti-subnet.
At the same when i try to connect it from SSMS from a remote machine it works fine.

I am not able to connect listener after manual failover.
(This is test environment)
Server1,Server3 -> Both synchronous (Within Same data center)
Server 3 -> Async (At DR location) -Forced Failover
Test1:
Failover Server1 to Server2 --> Able to connect Listener
Failover Server2 to Server1--> Able to connect Listener.
Failover Server1 to Server3--> Able to connect Listener.
Failover Server3 to Server1 or 2 --> Unable to connect Listener. Unable to ping Listener.
Failover Server 1or2 to Server3--> Able to connect Listener.
I am using below sub-nets:
10.11.192.0/22 10.11.192.130
10.12.192.0/22 10.12.192.140

Environment: SQL Server 2014 on Windows Server 2012 R2.
We have our availability group configured and working. However, when we try to connect to the AG listener from a remote server, we have to use the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) to connect. We'd like to be able to connect just using the host name. Interestingly, ping actually resolves the IP correctly for either.

I have set up a couple of servers in a SQL 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Group (non FCI). I have also configured a Listener which enables SQL clients to connect to the server currently servicing the database, as expected.
I would also like non SQL clients to be able to connect to the server currently hosting the database so that they can run scripts sitting in a share. I don't have a shared disk so just have a directory share on each server with the same scripts in each directory.
I am able to ping and RDP to the listener IP address/name and end up on the correct server but am unable to connect to the share ListenerNameShare. Is that actually supported? If it is, any thoughts on what I need to do to get it going. If it isn't what other options do I have?

I am trying to setup an AG on a cluster, I was able to define where I want my replica, but I need to setup the ip for the listener of that one
When I am adding the Ip at the listener I am getting the following message:
The Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) resource control API returned error code 5057. The WSFC service may not be running or may not be accessible in its current state, or the specified arguments are invalid. For information about this error code, see "System Error Codes" in the Windows Development documentation.
The attempt to create the network name and IP address for the listener failed. The WSFC service may not be running or may be inaccessible in its current state, or the values provided for the network name and IP address may be incorrect. Check the state of the WSFC cluster and validate the network name and IP address with the network administrator. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 41009)
Browsing around I found this guide: [URL] ......
And I make sure that the cluster has permissions to "Read all properties", "Create Computer Objects", even to "Create all child" permissions
I also added those permissions to the account that starts sql at that cluster and I am logged as that and I am still getting the error....

When I fail an availability group between subnets, I am finding that the DNS entry in DNS is staying. So what happens is the Availablity Group listener has 2 records in DNS, one for each IP. This causes the App to timeout at times, since DNS will return either of the two IP's.

We are rolling out the use of Availability Group listeners to our SQL Server 2012 Environment which has a 2 node multi-subnet cluster. The Primary is R/W and the Secondary is a non-readable node that would be manually failed over to in a DR scenario
I have set up the AGL and asked the sysadmins to create a DNS record in both subnets with fixed IP's.
The issue I have having is that when I ask the app developers to connect to the databases using the AGL it is totally random whether the AGL resolves to the Primary or DR node - as a result that are having problems getting their apps to connect.
I was thinking of asking the sys admins to remove the DNS record in the DR subnet and then add it back in should we need to fail over - but I was thinking there must be a better way.

We have a multi-site AG and are demoting one of the remote sites out of the AG. In doing so, we've discovered that no logic exists to remove an IP address from the listener.
It seems that the ALTER AVAILABILITY GROUP MODIFY LISTENER logic lacks functionality other than ADD. [URL] ....
I'm afraid to just remove the IP address from the cluster object as that IP is also stored in the HADR systables.
select * from sys.availability_group_listener_ip_addresses
select * from sys.availability_group_listeners

i have a database which get refreshed every day from client's data . and we need to pull heavy data from them every day as reports . so only selects happens on that database.
we do daily population of some table in some other databases from this daily refreshed DB.
will read uncommitted or NOLOCK with select queries to retrieve data faster.
there will be no dirty read as there are NO DML operation in that database so for SELECT which happens concurrently on these tables , will NOLOCK work?

Is it possible to ONLY allow a login to the availability group listener, but block logins to server instance/nodes?
So: MySQLServerA and MySQLServerB are in an avail group "MyAvailGroup".
I want users to login to MyAvailGroup's listener, but I do NOT want them to login to the actual hosts/nodes directly.
Is that possible?

I am attempting to delete some records in a table using msquery. Msquery locks up and I see that I have an intent lock on the table in enterprise manager that never seems to get an exclusive lock. What would inhibit an exclusive lock. USer connecting to the database at this time all seem to experience an ODBC error until I kill msquery. I can not kill the intent locks unless killing the msquery app.
Any Ideas??

I designed the AlwaysOn wrong, but every time we fail over from primary server to another server, my applications cannot connect because the sql logins cannot connect to their default databases. Once I run the command to link the login with the user in the default database then the users are able to connect. Did I do something wrong when designing AlwaysOn?

An IBM Global Services consultant is telling my client that in order to have SAP BI read any data from any other application supported by SQL Server 2005, that all tables and fields MUST be in UPPER CASE. This would mean that SAP BI could not read ANY data from AdventureWorks (which everyone needs ) but more importantly from 95% of applications written and stored on SQL Server. I find this to be ludicrious, frankly, but don't know how to find out if it is true. Anyone?

I have an availability group with read only replicas, readable secondary set to yes and allow all incoming connections. I have also configured the read only routing (at least I'm pretty sure this is correct).
If I login to SSMS with a user in the sysadmin role I can view the objects in the read only replica database. If I login with a user in the public role I'm unable to get past the obvious error:
"The database databaseA is not accessbile. (ObjectExplorer)"
I've also tried adding the "ApplicationIntent=ReadOnly" option.

I have an inter-company problem.
The one company gathers data into a SQL database hosted within their secure network and now one of the companies (that they are contracted to gather the data for) wants a backup of the data or a replicated database to be able to be placed onto a external HDD or different SQL server on their own network and server.
The catch is that to maintain their data security the original company doesn't want the company that is receiving the data to be able to edit the data. They are concerned that someone might change the data and claim that the data that they gathered is incorrect.
Is there a way to ensure the SQL database remains entirely read only?

Unable to access the 'T' database because no online secondary replicas are enabled for read-only access. Check the availability group configuration to verify that at least one secondary replica is configured for read-only access. Wait for an enabled replica to come online, and retry your read-only operation. Changed database context to 'T'.
I have 2 sql servers running in an AG group. SQL 2 is fully syncd and is used for read only reporting. The connection from the listener using ReadOnly works and connects to SQL 2. The problem is, when a database in SQL 2 is suspended from the AG group, the listener does not connect to the SQL 1 (primary).
The AG group is setup exactly like this:
Readable Secondary = Yes for both SQL 1 and 2, Availability Mode = Synchronous
why the listener does not connect to primary server?Connection in primary was set to "Allow read/write connections" for the AG. This meant "Connections where the Application Intent connection property is set to ReadOnly are not allowed. " Setting to "Allow All Connections" worked.

We have poor performance spikes on a drive containing our log file but this is only for reads and seems to be at a time when we run a re-index job. If this is a likely correlation as to poor performance in reading the log file, and what reads are done from a log file.

Considering trying to move 2008 acitve/passive cluster with log ship to day old read only 2008 server to 2012 active/passive to 2012 AG Read only server. Only problem is that read only instance may have to be a 2nd instance on a server. The new box is a beast 64 core 256 gig of RAM hp so this is no dog. So I have these choices
migrate 2008 active/passive cluster to 2012 active passive (this will be it's own ordeal)take new monster box and build two instances, one that will run the AG read only database, the other will house reporitng services and analysis services and a few dw databases. We are not heavy into deep dive analysis services yet kind of in it's infancy. Not sure if this other instance will be sql 2008R2 , may be able to do 2012. MY also have a few small sharepoint databases but they barely use it.

Why I see absolutely no performance improvement when I spread my primary file group over 8 separate files on 8 separate disks, as opposed to having the primary file group all in one file on one disk.
I have set up 2 identical databases, one spread over 8 disks and one on one disk. Each database has a table called DATA and a column called VALUE. Value is NVARCHAR(200). I have filled each table up in both databases with 20,000 rows.
I then perform a select on each table in each database using CHECKPOINT and DBCC DROPCLEANBUFFERS to ensure I am reading from disk before each query and the execution times are identical in both databases.
I then ran the same queries against each database using a load testing tool and the batch requests per second on each DB is identical under load.
Surely the database with data spread over 8 disks should be FAR faster than the single file database as you have the combined reading power of 8 disks as opposed to 2??
Also, the same is happening for write speeds. When I create the data on both databases, the time it takes is identical on both.
BOL says it should be faster with multiple disks.
Just FYI this is on an Azure virtual machine and each disk is a locally redundant data disk that I have attached to the virtual machine.
Whether write speeds should increase with multiple disks or just read speeds?
