I assume just changing the datatype - is not the way to go?

Oct 26, 2005Hallo. I need help, how pull out some inquiry string from type "ntext" in MS SQL(it is xml document). Sring has invariable length, in note is always on other position and includes variable text (e.g .:<actionId>xx</actionId>) . Position I can find out by the help of "patindex" but I don't know what then. I tryed to write procedures, but I had trouble with declaration variables (data type). Hi folks,
We have a nice issue here. We are running SQL 2005 Dev edition Service Pack 2 and we are trying to copy the contents of one table in a local sql server database to another table in another database on the same local sql server. We use an oledb source and a sql server destination. The table structure is exactly the same. One column is of the datatype ntext, when we try to load the contents the package will stop with the error:

Removing the column from the sql server destination will result in loading the complete table. Using an oledb destination instead of sql server destination fixes the problem. Is this a bug in the SQL server destination component?

Can't Use The NTEXT Datatype In SQLCLR Scalar-valued Functions

ntext, image, timestamp, table, or cursor"This is a problem for me. Here's what I'm trying to do :I have an NTEXT field in one of my tables. I want to run regular expressions on this field, and return the results from a stored procedure. Since SQL Server doesn't provide facilities to perform regular expressions, I need to use an SQLCLR function. I would have no problem doing this if my field was nvarchar. However, this field needs to be variable in length - I cannot set an upper bound. This is why I'm using NTEXT and not nvarchar in the first place.Is there a solution to this problem? I can't imagine that I'm the only person who wants to pass strings of arbitrary size to an SQLCLR function.

Jul 23, 2005I've just gotten my data into SQL Server, and changed the connection stringon the program.There was a memo field (Access 2000) and we put that in a text field (with adefault length of 16?).Now, when displaying the data online (through asp pages), there are bigwhite-space gaps in the pages (that display the memo field data), imageshave a "double" url(http://www.mysite.com/thisfolder/ht...thelinksite.com)there are lots of place with " ".The field data has html tags in it, if that has anything to do with it.It seems like I've heard that there are issues with text fields. Can someone tell me what the impact would be of changing all of the ntext column in ReportServer, ReportServerTempDB, and RSExecutionLogs to varchar(MAX)?
I can only guess that ntext was left in for backwards compatibility with sql2k?

Change Ntext To Nvarchar(max) In A Live Database
Oct 19, 2006I have a live SQL 2005 database that has ntext fields, when the ntext fields go over 4000 chars the record can no longer be edited. It throws a string or binary data would be truncated error. I tried turning text in row OFF, but it did not work. Can anyone forsee any problems with changing the ntext fields to nvarchar(max) in the live database? Also, I came across sp_tableoption N'MyTable', 'large value types out of row', 'ON', does this work for ntext also? sp_tableoption N'MyTable', 'text in row', 'OFF' did not do anything.Any help would be appreciated.

Jan 22, 2006I had several databases under sqlserver ce 2.0 (in my Pocket PC) which contained ntext fields. The size of the databases varies from 50,000 to 700,000 records. The size of an ntext field is from 4 bytes to 2 megabytes.
When I recreated my databases under sql server 2005 mobile on my desktop using VS2005 (see my post just under this one), I saw a big difference between the old and new database sizes. This problem was mentioned in one of the posts in this forum and the reply was to replace ntext data with ncharvar type.
Since most of my data was longer than 4000 bytes (which is the limit for nvarchar type), I couldn't use this suggestion. Instead, I changed my ntext type to image type and used a GetByte conversion.
No change! The size of the new database is still 50 % larger than the original. Since the difference is around 300 MB, this is an unacceptable thing.
Now, I either wait from somebody to suggest a new solution (apart from keeping the ntext data in a separate binary file and keep index of the records of this file in the records of sql database) or, most preferably, have
Microsoft solve this problem as soon as possible.

Please excuse the potentialsimplicity of the solution to my problem.I create a blank database (TestDB) under my server machine (SQL Server 2000Standard)... I then create a new table (Run_Number) with only one record init.Field(1): Next_Run_Number (bigint), identity w/ seed 1 and increment 1, nonulls, PKI can successfully save this new table to disk and everything seems fine...problem comes up when I go back into the table and change the datatype from(bigint) to (int). I try and save changes and I get the following errorprompt:'Run_Number' table- Unable to create index 'PK_Run_Number'.ODBC error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Invalid cursor stateI've checked and there's plenty of disk space available and the dbase is setto grow by 10% as necessary. I have a page where users upload their CSV files to and then I use SQLBulkCopy to insert all the records into my sql table. The problem is with columns of money data. EX: "$2,000" >> 2000The CSV file interprets the "$2,000" as a string of text. How do I convert it to a decimal so I can insert it into my sql database?

Change Datatype From Varchar To Bigint Not Working

I would like to change the datatype on a particular column from varchar to bigint across 100's of tables within a database.
I have the command ready which is:
ALTER TABLE tablename ALTER COLUMN columnname BIGINT
The problem happening is that it seems there are constraints across all the columns in every tables.
The error message is:
Server: Msg 5074, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The object 'DF__tablename__columnname__0ABD916C' is dependent on column 'columnname'.
Server: Msg 4922, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
ALTER TABLE ALTER COLUMN columnname failed because one or more objects access this column.
I understand that if I delete this constraint, then it will let me modify the datatype of the column, but since there are tons of them and they are randomly named, how do I achive changing the datatype across multiple tables in bulk.

but the output seems to be in a string format, so the order is not in an ascending order.

DataReader Source Error - Cannot Change The Datatype, Precision Or Scale In The Output Columns
Oct 3, 2007I have a data source that I access via odbc in a DataReader Source component in SSIS. I can access the data fine. However, I am having problems with certain fields that are numeric (specifically home prices ranging from 100,000.00 to 99,999,999.00). In the advanced editor for my data reader source under the input and output properties tab, in data reader output under the external columns and output columns, these fields for some reason default to numeric data types with a precision of 4 and a scale of zero, not large enough to hold the data that is coming in. This causes errors that make the data come in as null (after i specify to ignore the errors).
I can change the precision and scale to 18 and 4 in the external columns, but when I try to change the datatype, precision or scale in the output columns I get the following message:

But the problem when I change the name of any table, SQL Server don’t prompt my about the stored procedure that use that table .. so I cant remember witch Stored procedure use that table
By example if I am in programming language like C# or VB.NET when I try to change any name of any class the compiles catch all the error that coming from changing the name of the class and simply I will fix the problem because the compiler help me and list all the object content the error
But in SQL Server how can I search for stored procedure that use un existing table like compiler in any programming language ??
Or is there any why to solve my problem ??
And the above problem also there when I change the filed name
