SQL 2012 :: Compare And Join Databases

Feb 7, 2014

A customer has messed up while moving their databases. After working for a week they found that data is missing in the database.I have two backups, one from the old server and one from the new server today, they have been working in the new one for a week.

I need to compare these two databases and then update the new database with all data that is in the old one but not in the new database. Join the data in the two databases so to say. Both databases are from the same application so they use the same users, schema and so on.

I have two databases - I will call them database A and database B.

I want to run some code on database A, and then check if database A became identical to database B.

How can I compare two databases? I want to compare them in terms of structure, not content.

Any suggestions? Thank you!

How To Compare Across Two Databases

Dec 13, 2007

I have two databases - version 1 and version 2

I have the same table in both versions but the number of columns has changed from version 1 to version 2.

I can get the list of columns with:
select colid, name, col_text from _SCHEMA
where table_name like
'tableA' order by colid

How can I use something like this to compare tableA in dbo.1 to tableA in dbo.2 and just return the columns that exist in dbo.2 that aren't in dbo.1?

I thought something like this might do it, but I get major errors in execution:
use dbo.2 select colid, name, col_text from _SCHEMA
where table_name like
'tableA' and
name not in (use dbo.1 select name from _SCHEMA
where table_name like
'tableA')
order by colid

Compare Databases

Dec 8, 2007

The following thread worked fine and i used this one for copying from one database to another database.
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2494847&SiteID=1

Now one more question i would to confirm based on the above thread.

Suppose i have 2 records in database1.dbo.Department and 6 records in database2.dbo.Department.

I want to copy 2 records in database2.dbo.Department and 6 records in database1.dbo.Department.

It is just like comparing two databases.

Do i need to follow the same thread for copying databases which is above. I mean to say the same query.

How can i write script for comparing databases in terms of both schema and data.

How To Compare Objects In Two Databases In Sql 2k...

Jun 15, 2003

Hi,

I want to compare the production (say prod_db) objects against development database say dev_db.

In Oracle I would run a query using "minus" that is

select table_name from user_tables@prod_db
minus
select table_name from
user_tables@dev_db

what is the equivalent sql in t-sql(or are there any GUI tools to do this).I understand that from prod_db I need to create a link server to the dev_db to run such a query.

Thanks,

Compare Count Left Join?

Jul 10, 2014

I have the following tables.

Employee table

EmpNum, Department, Gender
100 AAA M
101 AAA F
102 BBB M
103 BBB F
104 AAA M
105 BBB F

EmpProducts table

EmpNum,Item
100 A1
100 A1
100 A2
101 A2
102 B1
102 B3
103 B2
104 A1
104 A2
105 B1

Products table

Deparment, Item, QtyM, QtyF
AAA A1 2 1
AAA A2 1 0
AAA A3 1 1
BBB B1 1 1
BBB B2 2 3
BBB B3 3 3

Each employee need to have a specific amount of product that is assigned to the employees department I need to know if they have to little or to many. The result should be like this.

100 have the correct items for the gender and department so he should not be in the result.

101 A2 1 She is 1 over the 0 she should have.
102 B2 -2
102 B3 -2
103 B1 -1
103 B2 -2
103 B2 -3
104 A1 -1
104 A3 -1
105 B2 -3
105 B3 -3

I made this SQL but i got stock in the count.

Select ep.item, e.Empnum, p.item from employee e
INNER JOIN products p
on p.department = e.department
LEFT JOIN EmpProducts ep
on e.Empnum = ep.EmpNum
and p.items = ep.item

here I need the count of the specific item and compare it against the QtyM if gender is male and against QtyF if gender is female

where
EmpProductCount <> ProductsQty
order by Empnum

SQL Server 2008 :: Easy Way To Compare Contents Of Objects Between 2 Different Databases?

Jul 20, 2015

Is there an easy way to compare the contents of objects between 2 different databases? For example, say I had 2 databases, My_DB_1 and My_DB_2, each with a SEC_User table. Say I wanted to do an object-to-object comparison between databases to see if there were any differences. Here's some sample SQL:

use My_DB_1
select * from sys.dm_sql_referencing_entities('dbo.sec_user', 'object')

use My_DB_2
select * from sys.dm_sql_referencing_entities('dbo.sec_user', 'object')

Say that the result sets above both returned a SEC_GetUser sproc object ref. Is there a way to write SQL that will compare the SEC_GetUser sprocs (and other objects in the above rowsets) from both databases? For example, if My_DB_1.SEC_GetUser returns an extra column in the result set than My_DB_2.SEC_GetUser then I'd like my comparison SQL to return a single column "IsDifferent" with SEC_GetUser as a row....

SQL 2012 :: Compare Two Columns In Three Tables

Dec 16, 2013

I have one database with several tables in it (table 1, table2, table3). In each table is two colums (colum1 = a number (201220) and colum2 = a number (0.50). Now, both tables will have rows with the same data in colum 1, but colum two will have different numbers (different prices). My goal is to run a query that will compare both colums in all three tables, take the lower of the three based on colum 2 and spit out the row. Obviously, this would output all rows (around 175k). The point is to create a least cost spreadsheet (csv) file based on evaluating all three tables.

SQL Server 2012 :: Compare Two XML Variables?

Mar 19, 2015

I'm rewriting a huge FOR XML EXPLICIT procedure to use FOR XML PATH, and need to compare previous output to the refactored one, so i didn't mess up XML structure.

The thing is, i'm not sure that SQL Server will always generate exactly same xml **string**, so i'd rather not compare by:

WHERE CAST(@xml_old AS NVARCHAR(MAX)) = CAST(@xml_new AS NVARCHAR(MAX))

nor do i want to manually validate every node, since the generated xml-structure is quite complex.

compare xmls by their "semantic value" ?

SQL 2012 :: Schema Compare Tools

Jun 30, 2015

Following an upgrade to SQL Server 2012, our shop's Schema Compare tool (Redgate SQL Compare) is no longer supporting our environment. We are starting to evaluate various 3rd party products to find a possible replacement, and would be interested in what products are favored by other IT shops who do a lot of database work.

Our shop is split about 75% SQL Server, 20% Oracle, and 5% I'll call other. Ideally a product would support SQL Server and Oracle, but our focus is on SQL server right now. On that platform we have ~50 servers spread across DevUATProd environments. In basic terms, we need a tool that can identify schema differences between DBs and generate synchronization scripts to support deploys between environments. Real-time synchronization is not a requirement (nor desirable), as deploys are a gated DBA function in our shop.

So now I need to query the table @t4 in and to determine the items that are assigned to category 'WHITE' in master category 1 and to 'CIRCLE' in master category 2.The important thing is to return items that are assigned solely to 'WHITE' in master cat 1 and solely to 'CIRCLE' in master cat 2.In the above example it would be only the ITEM 1 (id=10) that is returned:

1. ITEM 2 (id=11) is not returned because it has the assignment to category 'SQUARE' in master cat 2 additionally

2. ITEM 3 (id=12) is not returned because it has the assignment to category 'BLACK' in master cat 1 additionally

3. ITEM 4 (id=13) is not returned as it does not have assignment to category 'CIRCLE' in master cat 2 but only to 'WHITE' in master cat 1

3. ITEM 5 (id=14) is not returned as it does not have assignment to category 'WHITE' in master cat 1 but only to 'CIRCLE' in master cat 2
