I'm working on a project where I need to build a small database and then copy it to a server at the client's site. I can't connect directly, so I have to use a VPN connection and use Remote Desktop, copy the database backup from my machine to the cloud, then download it to the client machine. The project is still in the early stages, and the client is still sending me data in CSV files and Excel spreadsheets. I'm periodically needing to do a complete refresh of the database at the client. I've hacked my way through it a couple of times, but I need to know the proper way to do it. I get errors on the restore step, telling me the file is in use.

I'm using SQL Server 2012 R2 and am working on configuring vendor access to a particular DB. I have a test db & (what will eventually be) the production DB. I've configured security for the test DB and want to back that up, then restore it (including all settings) to the prod one, renaming it to the prod DB name.

We have a bunch of SQL 2012 databases which use SQl Server authentication (essentially local dev instances). Is it possible to take a backup of one of these database and then push them onto a (central) server which uses Integrated security (based on active directory authentication) using a script to change and map the authentication model in the process?

I want to backup an SQL Server database through a client application written in VB 6.0, and not through the Enterprize Manager.
I use the SQLDMO Objects Library to backup the database to the SQL Server machine through my application,
but there are the following problems:
a. The backup can be done only locally to the SQL Server machine. Is there any way to bypass this restriction?
b. To get the Directories Structure of this machine i use the xp_FixedDrives, xp_Subdirs stored procedures.
That's ok for the Backup operation but i do not have a way to view the FILES to perform Restore operation.
Of cource VB function Dir() cannot be used to view files on the server because of access restrictions.
Is there any workaround for that?

I have a .bak full database backup from a computer. Now I installed new SQL Server 2005 in another computer and would like to restore the .bak database here. How it can be done?
When I right click database and select restore database, it opens a window where it asks to put "destination for restore". This is a new SQL Server, how can I restore then?

Hello,
I have a user database which has 1 data file and 1 logfile.
I did a complete backup of the database to a file on the disk drive, using Enterprise manager. Due to some reason, I had to drop the database. The only way I could restore it was by,
1. Create the database with the same name.
2. Restore the complete backup from the file device.
While doing so,
I get the message "Backup set holds the backup of daatabase other than the existing 'userdbname' database. BAckup terminating."
Is it because the database was dropped and recreated.
If I choose the option to overwrite, it restores successfully.
Is this normal and right way to do it? Is there any thing else that I need to take care of, while backup or restore?
Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks,
MMS

Hi everybody,
On executing the RESTORE command of SQL Server to restore from a backup of 78.3 MB, the "Server Application Unavailable" error message comes up.The error message in the Application log is as follows:aspnet_wp.exe (PID: 2184) was recycled because memory consumption exceeded the 152 MB (60 percent of available RAM).
However using Query Analyser of SQL Server I am able to restore the database.
What is the solution to this problem?

What is the best way to restore a database from a folder of backups (including full, diff and log backups) without using the backup history in msdb?
I have a restore process that restores all backups on a regular schedule in order to fully verify their integrity. To do this, I use the backup history in msdb on each server that I'm monitoring. I had a thought the other day that I would be in trouble if I lost msdb. Then my backup history would only be as good as the last backup of msdb.
What I'd like to do is read a folder of backup files and generate a restore script up to a specified time. Would I use RESTORE HEADERONLY to do this? If so, would I use PowerShell to traverse each file in the folder?

I have a process that restores a production DB, overwriting the existing copy each night. I'd like to keep the solution "up" for as long as possible. And this'll be more important if I want to update it in the day (where there are more queries) too. The nature of queries thrown at the system is that there are about 20 per hour, it's underpinning a reporting system, it's not an OLTP system.
It seems to me I could restore the fresh DB copy into a holding DB, then rename it to the production DB name at the end of the process. The rename process should be pretty much instant.
But I need to think about detecting and waiting for queries to complete on the prod DB, before removing/demoting it (actually, I though to rename it, then reusing it as the next copy to update).

I have a DB, MDF is about 170GB, log 200GB. When I do a restore of it, the backup takes about 20 minutes to get to 100% but then it just stays there in Restoring Mode.
I have specified the WITH RECOVERY option.
What is happening that it doesn't commit the backup for some reason?

How is the syntax of the restore filelistonly and the restore database ... ?
I usualy write
restore filelistonly from disk = 'path and filenam.bak'
restore database. zy
from disk = 'path and filename.bak'
with replace,
move.....
move....
This works but I cannot use it with a splitted backup file. The files are much too big to put together to one file.

Hello there,
I've some really big problems with SQL Server 2005 Express. I Recently, I had 2 instances on my machine, one was a SQL Server 2000 Developer and the other a 2005 Express Version. The 2000 version was not necessary anymore, so I unstalled it, since then, the Express version keeps having probems.
Under the Server Properties -> Database settings -> Database Locations I've changed the path to D:sqldatamssql, but now, the programm always takes the "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData" to store and load the databases, no matter what I do.
And there are more problems see here:
Restoring does not work=======================
I wanted to restore a database called "fw40_admin" from a backup file (.bak), but that didn't work at all, it always says this as an error:
"System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The operating system returned the error '5(error not found)' while attempting 'RestoreContainer::ValidateTargetForCreation' on 'D:sqldatamssqlfw40_admin.mdf'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)"
But as soon as I type in the installation path "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData" inside the "Restore As" under "Options", it works.
Why does the backup only work in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData", BUT the database locations under the server properties is indicated with "D:sqldatamssql"????
Attaching does not work=======================
Attaching an existing database does not work either. Most databases (mdf) are located on the path D:sqldatamssql, but as soon as I press
Attach Databases -> Add
The dialog window appears with the "D:sqldatamssql" path, but it is unable to find any *.mdfs altough THERE ARE .mdfs in this directory. But Express can find databases in the selected installation: "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData".
Why can't Express see the directory on the D: partition???
What is wrong? Here? Can anybody help me?

We have 5 databases which will sum up to 8+TB, housed in our EDW server. We are planning to migrate to another storage system for better performance.
I am planning Full backup and Differential backup and detach the DB and restore the DB in the new storage system.
Or should I detach, copy the data and log file and attach the files, will this approach have any advantages ?

I have 2 servers in a SQL Server Fail-Over Cluster. IOW I use always-on availability groups. I run backups - full, diff and log - regularly via SQL Agent on one server only depending on which is primary. If there is a fail-over, then backups will continue on the other server. If I have to restore a database in an availability group I probably would need some combination of full, diff, and log backups from each server. Would that actually work? I test the backups weekly however I just realized that I never tested that scenario.

I neglected to backup the transaction log as part of the process of backing up the database. Now i only have the backup file for the database and no transaction log backup. When i try to do a restore on the database, i get the error on a "tail log missing" message (which i'm assuming is that it's looking for the t-log backup?).
Is it possible to restore or even restore to a new database? I'm only looking to retreive data from 2 tables within the backup file.
Thanks!
SQL Server 2005 on Windows 2003 Server x64.

What I want to do is :
- restore a backup of a 3rd party database onto one of our servers
- this has no users that I can use
- there is some ETL processing so we're using Control-M to manage the process
- create a database user and grant it db_reader.
I'd like to do this without granting any users elevated privileges if possible.
What I've done so far is grant the Control-M user (this is a domain user) dbcreator rights and made it owner of our copy of the database that is being refreshed.
The refresh is completing, but Control-M is not able to log onto the database to create the user.
What is the best way to accomplish this task without granting the control-m user sysadmin rights?
Would I be able to do it if I used a SQL Agent job for the restore and user creation?

I need only the count of databases that last fullbackup was older then 24 hours or null. and status is online. I have tried
SELECT Count(DISTINCT msdb.dbo.backupset.database_name)
From msdb.dbo.backupset
where datediff(day,backup_finish_date,GETDATE()) > 1 -- or is null
and Database_Name not in ('tempdb','ReportServerTempDB','AdventureWorksDW','AdventureWorks') --online also
group by Database_name, backup_finish_date
Tried using where max(backup_finish_date) < datediff(day,backup_finish_date,GETDATE()) .But get the aggregate in where clause error. get a count of databases with backups older than 24 hours not including the samples, report service, and tempdb. I would also want to put status is online but havent gotten the above to work so havent tried to add that yet.

My DBA does a backup of the database and then it gets encrypted and compressed using PGP. This file is sent via ftp to an outside vendor. When they receive it, decrypt it and try to restore, they get the following error:
The media family on device c:dynaxoto1927131153 is incorrectly formed. Sql Server cannot process this media family”
We have tried the process in reverse where we have the vendor send us a file and it works fine.
Please provide some insight.

Hi i've tried a few remote administration tools including Microsofts own Web Data Administrator for SQL server... but none of them seem to do what is essential to me and that is backup/restore databases to a file.
Does anyone know of a free tool that can just backup/restore databases remotely. I dont really want to have to use export/import data as things like triggers get lost when using Microsoft Web data administrator.
A free web tool written in ASP.NET or ASP would be ideal. But PHP would also be fine.
I can ftp to the webserver in question to download the backup file and upload a file which needs restoring but i need a web tool to carry out the operations.
Or if there is another method that would work please let me know.
Thanks
