SQL 2012 :: Database Access From Multiple Windows Users?
Jun 3, 2014
I have been using the software, and it has been working fine (on windows user A). Now, I have created another windows user (User B), and would like to use the same software/database. The software launches fine (User B), but cannot access the created SQL database (created with user A)
How do I setup the database to allow access from all users on the same PC?

We log ship our production database tansaction logs to a secondary database on a separate remote domain.
Incidentally, this was not set up via the "Ship Transaction Logs" wizard, but instead we had to use the various system stored procedures after restoring a copy of the database on the remote domain in standby mode.
We now have an issue where users are unable to access the remote secondary database without having sysadmin privileges. Clearly we want to avoid this!
We want to be able to use Windows Authentication mode on the server of the secondary database. But since the two domains differ, is it possible to even achieve this?
How can we set up read-only access for users on the secondary database without giving them sysadmin privileges?

We are currently using Crystal reports but are considering using SQL RS. We need to know if there is a restriction on simultanoeus access to the same report by multiple users? What happens when multiple users try to access the same report simultaneously? If reports can be accessed simultaneously, do the requests queue up or are they processed concurrently?
Any help on this issue is greatly appreciated.

I have a large table with email column. I need to grant select access to this email column to many users but the actual email should not be visible to those users. I thought of following options:
1.Create an indexed view with that column encrypted and then grant access to users. While searching by email, their search text will also be encrypted and then matched with view column.Problem with this is that I have to create indexed view because most searches will be on Email column and table size is pretty big,20 m records. I don't prefer indexed view in general.
2. Add another column to table with encrypted email and grant access to that column to users. Problem with this is that it will increase table size and i'll need one more index.

Is
there a way to find a list of Windows User accounts that are directly
or indirectly (through Windows Group membership) assigned to a database
role?
I could put work in to CLR programming or using a Linked Server to
Active Directory, but if there is a sys.* view available that can
provide me this
information directly it would be much easier.
I'll be looking into this further myself anyway and posting an answer
if I can find one, but if anyone has suggestions... well, thanks!

I need to determine the following about the current authenticated Windows domain user who is trying to access a SQL Server via a trusted connection.
1 Has the current user been granted login access to the trusted SQL Server?
2 Has the current user been granted access to a specific database?
3 Is the current user a member of a specific database role such as (DB_ROLE_ADMINISTRATORS)?
Thanks,
Sean

I'm developing an application in ASP.Net that uses SQLServer. The database person in the team wants to have each user have a seperate login to the database so he can tell who has done what changes in the database. Is this a good practice? Or are their performancesecurity issues with this model?

We are trying to setup security on our Sql Server. We are using Integrated
Security.
The problem we are having is that we need to have a user belong to multiple groups within one database. The user would have different rights depending upon which group they belonged to.
So far we have not found anyway to accomplish this setup.
I would appreciate any ideas/thoughts on this matter.
Thanks,
Tracy Young

I don't know whether this question belong here, but....
In the past I had many customers using the same website each with their own domain name and their own database. To accomplish that, I used MS Access and placed each customers database in separate directories. I steered the customer to the correct directory using their domain name. I am now trying to accomplish the same thing using aspnetdb.mdf and other .mdf database files. I am using the aspnetdb.mdf database for membership, etc. I want the aspnetdb.mdf database file to be unique for each customer. Does anyone know how to accomplish what I was doing with MS Access using aspnetdb.mdf? Is there any way to have multiple web.config files each of which would be dedicated to a particular customer?

We build up a new website in .net mvc 4.0 on a w2012 server with MSSQL 2012 database. We use windows autentification and normal anonymous access through NT AUTHORITYIUSR who is also a login in the database. But we make extra login possibility for users who are registered and they can insert and modify data in some tables in the database. And I'am afraid of giving NT AUTHORITYIUSR insert and update for some column in tables.I think of set up a new login for the database. Run a new connection string on login and set up special permission for that extra user on the database, and let the user become a member of the ordinary user on the database.

My developers would like a 'sandbox' database with full ddl and dml permissions, however, they do not want others to read/change/drop their objects. With SQL 2005, can DDL permissions be granted to a user at the schema level? I'd rather not set up a database for each developer.

Is there a way to deny the users the ability to open a server via Management Studio but still allow remote connections.
In my program I need an admin login to do various things. I am using the sa login and setting the password on install of Sql Express. But, if someone changes the password for the sa login after installation and I have the login for sa hard coded in my program, then everything will break. Is there a way to make sure that no one can change the sa password?

I am migrating a database TESTDB from SQL 2008R2 to a new server running SQL Server 2012.
Management has decided the current sql users should have "better" user names. So the login and username "BadUsername" on the old server should be called "GoodUserName". Goodusername should have the same permissions as Badusername.
I have now restored a backup from the old server to the new server.
I used the following script for creating the login:
CREATE LOGIN [GoodUserName] WITH PASSWORD=N'difficultpassword', DEFAULT_DATABASE=[master], DEFAULT_LANGUAGE=[us_english], CHECK_EXPIRATION=OFF, CHECK_POLICY=OFF
GO
Then I run the following script:
ALTER USER Badusername WITH LOGIN = GoodUserName, NAME = GoodUserName
But the results are not what I wanted. I now have two database users: Badusername and GoodUserName. I would have preferred if BadUserName was "replaced" by GoodUserName, but it won't be a problem if I have to delete badusername manually. Worser is that GoodUserName have NOT "inherited" any permissions from Badusername.
Is there an easy way to transfer permissions or do I need to loop through the permissions of badusername and apply those to badusername?

What I want to do is :
- restore a backup of a 3rd party database onto one of our servers
- this has no users that I can use
- there is some ETL processing so we're using Control-M to manage the process
- create a database user and grant it db_reader.
I'd like to do this without granting any users elevated privileges if possible.
What I've done so far is grant the Control-M user (this is a domain user) dbcreator rights and made it owner of our copy of the database that is being refreshed.
The refresh is completing, but Control-M is not able to log onto the database to create the user.
What is the best way to accomplish this task without granting the control-m user sysadmin rights?
Would I be able to do it if I used a SQL Agent job for the restore and user creation?

In visual studio 2005 I created a web page which accessed some information from a database on an sql server.
Various pages highlighted that aspnet replaces the windows username with it's own variant which is likely to blocked when trying to access the server.
I adjusted the web.config to use a connection string with Trust_Connection=True.
This doesn't seem to have worked.
Any Suggestions as to why this would be?.

I am currently reviewing what patch levels various instances are at. One that have come across is a Windows Internal Database (WID), version 11.0.2100.0 (SQL Server 2012 RTM), which is being used for WSUS.
I was thinking about bringing this up to SP 2. I had thought that WID was patched as part of the operating system, not with the SQL Server Service Pack installer. But I have been Googling it, and I cannot find any references to say one way or the other how it is serviced. Does WID is upgraded using the standard Service Pack? Or is there some WSUS magic?

I have a windows app I am deploying by CD along with SQL Server - when I manually installed sql server my app can access the db (named instance, local system, mixed mode). I used the exact same settings to do an unattended install for sql express and it does not work. All the settings in the db look the same. Does anyone know what it could be?
Thanks.

Hi guys. I created a database "MyDatabase" using an AD Account "user01" which is a member of a domain group "GroupA". I have created a login in my SQL Server 2005 for this AD group. I have also added the said login as a user of my database. I created other AD users and put them in the same group. When I try to access the database using the other users, I get this message
The server principal "MyDomainuser02" is not able to access the database "MyDatabase" under the current security context.
This KB tells me that my situation is triggered by the first case in which the owner of the database is windows authenticated. I have already set the database to be TRUSTWORTHY. I haven't tried CERTIFICATES though. I believe I haven't done anything complex to warrant this solution.
I'm really lost with the myriads of principals and securables that SQL2005 has. All I want is just to execute a certain set of stored procedures. I can't do this because I can't even execute "USE MyDatabase". What are the permissions I need to give to "GroupA" ?

Are there ways in SQL server to deny connecting to a instance? Basically i am looking for a way where data is accessed only through application , even the DBA's shouldn't have access to the data though they are sysadmins? Someone told me this is possible in SQL 2014? This is only for individual access, i know i can put some encryption in app layer.

Hi Everyone,I have one database file which needs to be accesable to both a .net website and a vb.net application. The application collects data from the 'real world', processes it and adds the data to the database. The Website reads data from the database and displays the data in a graphical format. Now for the problem; While the Application is connected to the database (adding data), the Website is denied acces to the database. All connections to the DB are disposed when the Application is not uploading data, but the Website continues to be locked out (making it pretty useless) Closing the Application makes the Website work fine, but of course this means no 'real world' data can be updated. Can anyone suggest what is happening here, and more importantly how to fix it? A walkthrough must be available for this problem somewhere,... I just can't find it :(Thanks all,*The Stressed One*

I have a single database and 5 user which use this database for DDL and DML operations.
The problem we are facing here is, every time a user need to do some work in this database he/she had to ask(manually) to rest of the 4 users whether they are doing some task over the same DB or not. Sometime due to communication gap one user open any transaction which creates a deadlock for another user to execute any query over the same tables in this DBI want to get rid of this problem by making it configurable from SQL Server part so that if any user which is already accessing this DB, so the other user don't get access to it, kind of Mutually exclusive behavior.
How to do this.
