SQL 2012 :: Does SSIS Catalog Use Transparent Data Encryption
Jul 10, 2014
In cases when the SSIS package has to be deployed in SQL Server, when we use ProtectionLevel ="server storage" while creating SSIS Catalog, does it use TDE? or Database Standard Encryption? if the database is using TDE?

We have a large VMWare environment with HP SAN, and 2 datacenters - primary and DR, with SAN based replication between them.We also backup databases to tape via Commvault and send them off-site using a vendor.TDE protects data at 'rest', meaning, (that if it wasn't implemented, and) if someone got a hold of our physical .mdf/.ldf files, or our .bak's, or tapes, they could recover the data.
Hi, I need to encrypt certain fields of tables with minimized changes required to my application. I want the database only available to my application so I want to use password to protect the encryption key.
Currently, in SQL 2005, I created view and use INSTEAD OF trigger to encrypt/decrypt data to underlyer table. I also having code at application startup, pass my password to a stored proc to open these key so that my view can encrypt/decrypt data accordingly.
I read some posts mentioned that SQL 2008 supports transparent data encryption. May I know how does it help in my case?
I have a question regarding Transparent Data Encryption. I have enabled TDE on a database using the below steps:
1. Create a master key encryption by a password. 2. Create a certificate in the the user database named 'TDE_Test' protected by the master key. 3. Create database encryption key 'TDE_Test' using the certificate created in Step 2. 4. Enable encryption by using the command 'ALTER DATABASE TDE_Test SET ENCRYPTION ON'
I understand that if I need to copy this TDE encrypted database to a different SQL Instance, I have to copy the certificate from the source Instance to the destination Instance. Now my question is, do the Service Master Key and Database Master Key come into the picture here anywhere?
Are these related to TDE in any way? Do I have to take regular backups of the Service Master Key & Database Master Key as part of regular maintenance for the SQL Instance that has a TDE encrypted database?
"SSIS 2012 Catalog doesn't have option to give read access to SSIS Catalog to view package run reports" ... Any luck allowing power developers / operators access to READ the SQL 2012 SSIS Execution Reports without granting them SSIS_Admin or Sysadmin?
According to this link posted back in 2011 (w/ Microsoft's feedback in Nov 2011: "We’re closing this issue as “Won’t Fix.” At this point the bug does not meet our bar for resolving prior to SQL Server 2012 RTM. As we approach the SQL Server 2012 release the bar for making code changes gets progressively higher." URL....Regarding Permissions to SSIS Catalog, here are the findings. We can give access in three ways:
1. READ Access – We can provide a user db_datareader access. With this the user can see the objects within the SSIS catalog database, but cannot see the reports.
2. SSIS_ADMIN – Add the user to this database role in SSISDB. With this the user can view the reports. But it also provides them privileges to modify catalog information which is not expected. We can add it using below script EXEC sp_addrolemember 'ssis_admin' , 'REDMONDPAIntelAnalyst'
3. SYSADMIN - Add the user to this server role. This will make the user an admin on the SQL server. This is not intended. Is there any method available which will have provision to give read only access to see SSIS Catalog package execution reports and not having modify Catalog access.
I am running a package in the catalog. The package contains a c# script that uses FTP webrequest. It runs fine in SSDT. Trying to execute from the catalog the ftp list directory is timing out.
This seems to be a firewall issue. We have tried adding an exception for dtexec, but that did not . I am thinking another program runs the package, maybe ISServer.exe?
Any program that would need the firewall exception to run the package in the catalog?
SQL 2012 SSIS package.I have a package connection that has the initialcatalog set in the connection string/properties page. This package connection also has an expression defined to set the initial catalog at runtime according to a passed in parameter. It works fine.
I am trying to create a second package in this same manner, but the connection does not seem to want to keep both the hardcoded initialcatalog and the expression to set it dynamically.
I can hardcode the initcatalog just fine, when when I add the expression to set it dynamically later, it clears out the initialcatalog I added.
What am I missing, why was I able to do this in the other package? I compared as much as I can think of between the two packages, all seems similar.
I have an SSIS package built by another developer, and now that I'm running it under my login the passwords won't save. The solution and packages are setup with ProtectionLevel EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey, but how do I get the User Key to reset so I can now save passwords? I can re-enter them, but whenever I enter hte password and test it then click OK it still has the red arrow next to the connection as if there's an error. I can create new connections and those passwords save fine, but with 40-50 items in this package I hate the thought of having to go into each and change the connection.
I tried changing the package and solution to DontSaveSensitive then rebuilding and closing then reopening, I hoped there was some option to reset the User Key just as if I created the solution. If this option doesn't exist why?
There is a checkbox when you create an SSIS catalog which says "Enable automatic execution of Integration Services stored procedure at SQL Server startup". It's a good practice to have this option on. BUT! How do you verify whether this option is ON or OFF after you have created a catalog and how do you enable it if it wasn't enabled at the time of creating the catalog?
I need to see inside a SSIS 2012 project a new SSIS installed component, but in the SSDT 2010 I cannot see the SSIS Data Flow Items tab for adding data source/data destination respect to the choose toolbox items pane.
comparing UNIQUEIDENTIFIER columns..This query returns several rows where the [ReportId] and [LastRunDate] columns are both NULL:
SELECT [c].[Name],[c].[ItemID],[xl].[ReportID] , MAX([TimeStart]) [LastRunDate] FROM [dbo].[Catalog] [c] LEFT JOIN [dbo].[ExecutionLogStorage] [xl] on [c].[ItemID] = [xl].[ReportID] WHERE [c].[Type] NOT IN (1,5) -- Not a folder or a data source! group by [c].[Name],[c].[ItemID],[xl].[ReportID] order by 4
However, trying to just list catalog reports with no execution history returns 0 rows, but I'm expecting it to return a row for every NULL [ReportId] from the above query:
SELECT * FROM [dbo].[Catalog] WHERE [Type] NOT IN (1,5) -- Not a folder or a data source! AND [ItemID] NOT IN (SELECT [ReportID] FROM [dbo].[ExecutionLogStorage])
I even tried casting [ItemId] and [ReportId] columns in the 2nd query to VARCHAR(255), and still got no rows, but the following queries return 0 rows and 1 row (respectively).
select * from [dbo].[ExecutionLogStorage] where [ReportID] = '0BB2209C-7736-46C8-AD02-4614EBA4F0F1' select * from [dbo].[Catalog] where [ItemID] = '0BB2209C-7736-46C8-AD02-4614EBA4F0F1'
I've deployed a SSIS project (having some packages) on SSIS catalog and I've created a job to invoke the related packages. I'd like to query the SSIS catalog to get the info about the execution of the job to understand if it is completed with success.I've seen the tables internal.executions and internal.operations. Which of these two tables contains the more useful info about the execution job (f.e. the job name, the execution status)?
I'm currently working on a BI architecture for a customer, and consider to propose the Power BI data catalog as a data distribution layer. The customer will use Power BI, but also has other BI tools.
Are data sets in the data catalog available to other clients than Power Query alone? E.g. are there OData feed endpoints available? If not, what would be the best way to give other tools access to the data?
I am working to set up encryption of my database. am trying to implement a process proposed by the DoD Standard Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) and cannot figure it out. I am using SQL 2012 and the requirement is to
A: Run the following to create a certificate: USE <'database name'> CREATE CERTIFICATE <'certificate name'> ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = '<'password'>' FROM FILE = <'path/file_name'> WITH SUBJECT = 'name of person creating key', EXPIRY_DATE = '<'expiration date: yyyymmdd'>'
This script did not work – I did not know what file it was referencing and it kept erroring out, so I used my own process as follows
USE master GO CREATE MASTER KEY ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'mY_P@$$w0rd' CREATE CERTIFICATE certificate_name WITH SUBJECT = 'Certificate for my database'
[code]....
This also error out, but my questions are the following:
-What would the symmetric key be encrypting? -The application that is using the database is IIS, so would there be a problem with it communicating with the database? -Does the key need to be installed on that IIS server? -Do I need to apply the encryption to the database, column or table.
I have setup ssl encryption for SQL connections by using a self-signed certificate (not the best I know) and setting "Force Encryption" to Yes. Now I am trying to show that the connection is indeed encrypted and I like to see which the ssl-key is used for a connection; preferably the one that I provided. How can I do this? I am just not comfortable trusting the OS or SQL to do what I ask.The query "SELECT encrypt_option FROM sys.dm_exec_connections" Shows incrypted but no extra info.
We are planning to encrypt few fields using asymmetric encryption. Tyring share public key with users and retain private key with us. How to generate keys? Haven't found any solid document on how to generate these keys.
My source data is present in XML File which is stored in CLOB column Of Oracle. CLOB column is compressed.I need to Migrate data by Uncompressing XML to SQL 2012 .
Do I need to define XML column in SQL Server 2012 for storing Uncompressed CLOB values ?
How to uncompress the clob and extract the required data from XML using SSIS .
I've two SQL databases, the first one having the schema named sch1 and the second one with the schema named sch2. I need to copy data of more tables belonged to the sch1 into the sch2 of the second SQL Server db and I'd like to create a SSIS 2012 pkg in order to achieve this goal.
I am a complete newbie to SSIS. I can create a simple package to transfer data between SQL instances and thats about it.
I have tableA (source data) and tableB (Destination data). TableA has 4 column and tableB has 5. I want to transfer all of the columns from tableA into TableB, but the 5th column in tableB needs to be populated with the ServerInstance name of the server TableA sits on. Do I need to have multiple data sources to achieve this? I have tried but no matter how I set it up, the Column in the destination is set to ignore.
I am wanting to change from using a query to move this data to using an SSIS Data Flow. I am familiar with using Merge Join to combine the two tables (H & S in this case), but I'm not sure where I can use the ISNULL in the manner described above. Is there a way to do it in the Merge Join? Do I have to do it after the Merge Join?
I would like to know how I can add the following sample code to my Source data on Data Flow on SSIS, or what other options there are. The main issue is time as we have talking about 100's of millions of rows
select Sample, CASE WHEN Sample IS NULL THEN NULL WHEN SUBSTRING(Sample, 1, 6) IS NULL THEN ' ' ELSE RTRIM(SUBSTRING(Sample, 1, 6)) END AS [Sample_1_6] from TestTable
what I have done at this stage is just to Create a SQL task with a Insert into
INSERT INTO [dbo].[TestTable1] ([Sample] ,[Sample_1_6]) select Sample, CASE WHEN Sample IS NULL =THEN NULL WHEN SUBSTRING(Sample, 1, 6) IS NULL THEN ' ' ELSE RTRIM(SUBSTRING(Sample, 1, 6)) END AS [Sample_1_6] from TestTable
If there is a way adding this to a dataflow so I van use fast load that would really be the best solution. I know there are derived columns, but would this really be faster than the straight insert into in a SQL Task? If this is the way to go what is the code I would use in the derived column or any other option.
I want to import data from a excel source to SQL Server 2005 using SSIS. Among all the calls columns to be imported, there is 1 column which needs to be encrypted using asymmetric encryption and stored in destination table. Can anybody guide me how to program SSIS package using encryption function.
2) We have decided to use SSIS for migration and interface is BIDS to develop, build, deploy & install SSIS packages.
3) We even have to encrypt some tables colmns data while reading from source so that it is secure in network and gets into target database as such requiring decryption for reports and front end display.
4) For database Security, we are going to use AES 256 Symmetric Encryption. We will be using RSA for Asymmetric Key Encryption, 1024 Bits. Can you please give links on these 2 encryption mechanisms.
5) Where can we use Symmetric Encryption & Asymmetric Key Encryption i.e on columns of tables i.e. data or password & based on what do we decide which to use?
6) Please post links/code to generate these keys. Where do we fit this code in SSIS package & where do we use the keys. Can you give me code for keys fitted into following query:
insert into EmpDest select e.empno, e.ename, d.deptno, d.dname from emp e, dept d where e.deptno = d.deptno go
I have a customer who is looking to encrypt their applications connection to the back-end SQL server. I've gotten a valid certificate for the server from a trusted CA, and it's installed on the server (shows up in Personal certificates in the Certificate MMC when selecting the computer) and I can choose it in the drop down on the certificates tab of the SQL Network protocols properties in Configuration Manager.
Now, my question: If I select the certificate but do NOT enable the "Force Encryption" option, the client will be able to request encryption on their end, and the connection will then be encrypted. If the client (other applications) do NOT request encryption, they will still be able to connect, but their connection will be un-encrypted. URL....
Lastly, I could've swore I had found some information indicating that some methods of establishing a connection to SQL can fail when Force Encryption is enabled, as the method doesn't support SSL encryption.
I am using VS2012 and creating a package on a 64bit machine to import some data from a .xlsx file. My question is that I am getting an error for the Excel connection manager, do I need to install some kind of excel drive or excel itself on the machine in order to be able to import the data?
script in SSIS to check data connections/sources and send an email if it fails validation. I found this script online, but I'm not real good with scripting and only VB scripting at that. How can I modify this script or is there another one here that will do what I need. The data connection in question links to Salesforce and will fail validation if the password/security token is invalid.
The reason I need this script is that we have no control over the password changes and need to know if the salesforce team changes the password without informing us.
