How I am using a CASE statement within a WHERE clause to filter data:
CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.GetSomeStuff @filter1 varchar(100) = '', @filter2 varchar(100) = '' AS BEGIN SELECT
[Code] .
What I want, is to be able to pass in a single value to filter the table, or if I pass in (at the moment a blank) for no filter to be applied to the table.
Is this a good way to accomplish that, or is there a better way? Also, down the line I'm probably going to want to have multiple filter items for a single filter, what would be the best way to implement that?
I have a two tables each having a uniqueidentifier column person_id
I am trying to a select statement where I want a list of the person_id's in one table that are not in another table.
-- insert into wch_needed those who need checked
insert into #wch_needed (person_id, rendered_by ) select distinct e.person_id, e.rendered_by from #wch_who o, encounter e where o.person_id not in (select distinct person_id from #wch_have ) and o.person_id = e.person_id
the where conditional
where o.person_id not in (select distinct person_id from #wch_have )
My client's website database is hosted by a third party. I need to alter one of the column definitions for the largest table in the database. Unfortunately, the transaction log fills up if I try to alter the table. I've done all the usual stuff like truncating the log, etc., but the simple fact is that the operation requires more log space than we have available. Therefore, we need to purchase additional disk space for the database. What I'm looking for is a way to roughly estimate how much log space will be required to alter this table so that we purchase enough but not too much additional space. The table has an identity primary key and 4 other single column indexes: one int, one datetime and two varchar(30) columns. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
I was having interesting discussion on estimation of log file with a fellow collegue who happens to be quite knowledgable as well.
He told me if we identify the most frequently hit tables for a database and then (sum their sizes * 1.5) for OLAP we get rough estimate for disk space to be allocated for log file.
I am selecting the count of the students in a class by suing select COUNT(studentid) as StCount FROM dbo.student But I need to use a case statement on this like if count is less than 10 I need to return 'Small class' if the count is between 10 to 50 then I need to return 'Medium class' and if the count is more than 50 then 'Big class'.
Right now I am achieving this by the following case statement
SELECT 'ClassSize' = CASE WHEN Stcount<10 THEN 'Small Class' WHEN Stcount>=10 and StCount<=50THEN 'Medium Class' WHEN Stcount>50 THEN 'Big Class' END FROM( select COUNT(studentid) as Stcount FROM dbo.student) Stdtbl

I have a query that is counting the number of applications gotten for the day.
SELECT (usr.FirstName + '' + usr.LastName)AS [Sales Team Member], stm.UserID, COUNT (MerApp.ApplicationID)AS [Number of Apps] FROM MerchantApplication MerApp INNER JOIN Users usr ON MerApp.assignedTo = usr.UserID INNER JOIN SalesTeamMembers stm ON usr.UserID = stm.UserID INNER JOIN SalesTeams satm ON stm.SalesteamID = satm.SalesTeamID WHERE MerApp.LastUpdateOn BETWEEN @strStartofDays AND @strEndDate AND MerApp.ApplicationStatus=3 AND STM.ActiveStatus=1 GROUP BY MerApp.AssignedTo, usr.LastName, usr.FirstName, stm.UserID, stm.SalesteamID, MerApp.ApplicationStatus, satm.TeamDescription
LastUpdateOn is the days the table is updated
Since it's just a 24hr count I should have to use BETWEEN in my where clause. What is another way to count for 1 day.
I have the following query where I select records from Active_Activities_temp which do not match on cde_actv in the table ACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING: SELECT Active_Activities_temp.* FROM Active_Activities_temp LEFT JOIN ACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING ON Active_Activities_temp.cde_actv=ACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING.cde_actv WHEREACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING.cde_actv is null ORDER BY prtcpnt_id So for example, if a participant has a cde_actv=38 (which doesn't exist in ACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING), that record would appear as the query is currently.
The issue is that participants can have multiple records in Active_Activities_temp and if a participant has a record that does exist in ACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING, no records for that participant should appear in this query result. For example, if a participant has two records in Active_Activities_temp, one with a cde_actv 38 (which does not appear in ACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING) and one with a cde_actv 33 (which does appear in ACTIVITY_CORE_LISTING), no records for that participant should appear in the result. Currently the record with cde_actv=38 does appear.
What code can I implement to do what I need to do? Thanks so much.
Select Non Empty{[Measures].[Exposure Amount]} On Columns, Non Empty TopCount( ( AddCalculatedMembers(
[Code] ....
As a result I only get 29 records. One record in the middle is missing. If I change to Topcount 31 I get 32 records, where the missing record is also included.
If I remove the Zero supression I receive 30 records as expected. For me the MDX looks good. I will try to reproduce on AW.
Arvind writes "i want to create a stored procedure returns an OUTPUT variable containing the no. of records given by a query, the query being dynamic. Preferrably the query should also be passed as a parameter to the stored procedure...If not,it should be constructed in the SP and a Part of the where clause is dependant on the value of another variable passed to the SP.
How should the query be constructed, executed, and then the Count(*) value returned?
"WHERE <condition1> AND <condition 2> ;
"AND <condition 2> " may exist or may not exist in the query; it is dependant."
where substring(pa.other_id_number,5,1) = @monthid and pa2.df_patstatus like 'act%' and ((pa2.df_institutionname not like ('ACT%') or pa2.df_institutionname not like ('county%')))
It returns records that have either one of the not like statements. If I comment out the line and use below it will work for one of the statements
where substring(pa.other_id_number,5,1) = @monthid and pa2.df_patstatus like 'act%' and pa2.df_institutionname not like ('ACT%')
How can I get the two to work together. I thought the parenthesis would work but no luck.
actually i need to do a sql report... there are 3 parameters (date from. date to, issue_user_id) that are required in order to retrieve the data...now i am facing one problem, if i just enter the date_from and date_to, and leave the issue_user_id blank, i wish to retrieve all the data, but i can't do it.
i have try to use:
if @IssueUserID = ' ' Select....(blah blah ) else select (blah blah)...it is long and work in Query analyzer but no working in .NET Reporting services.... is it possible to enter IF ..ELSE statement in WHERE clause?hope that u all can help.....

I am trying to write sql to basically say if c.rel_value IN ('XYZ','ABC') then rel_attr_id = 'A0' else rel_attr_id = 'C1'...bbut to get the rel_value we need the rel_attr_id to be 'A0' to begin with....so my statement currently is...
select c.client, c.attribute_id, b.dim_value, a.description, c.rel_attr_id, c.rel_value, 'N' as status from agldescription a, agldimvalue b, aglrelvalue c where b.client = c.client AND b.attribute_id = c.attribute_id AND b.dim_value BETWEEN c.att_val_from AND c.att_val_to AND a.client = b.client AND a.attribute_id = b.attribute_id AND a.dim_value = b.dim_value AND a.language = 'EN' AND a.attribute_id = '70' AND c.rel_attr_id = 'A0'
then I want to say as per above but if the rel_value are in XYZ or ABC then sqap rel_attr_id to 'C1' otherwise keep with 'A0'...
Ok I have a query "SELECT ColumnNames FROM tbl1" let's say the values returned are "age, sex, race".
Now I want to be able to create an "update" statement like "UPATE tbl2 SET Col2 = age + sex + race" dynamically and execute this UPDATE statement. So, if the next select statement returns "age, sex, race, gender" then the script should create "UPDATE tbl2 SET Col2 = age + sex + race + gender" and execute it.
I need a SQL statement that selects a specific year (@yr type int) in the "createddate" column...if this @yr is equal to 0 then I want to select ALL columns regardless of the year...This is what I have so far, but it doesnt work...SELECT * FROM tblUsersWHERE year(CreatedDate)=CASEWHEN @yr<>'0' THEN @yrELSE NOT NULLEND

Hi, I need help to use CASE Statement within my WHERE Clause. I want to change the WHERE Clause based on my condition as following: SELECT ... FROM ... WHERE (condition) AND (condition) AND (condition) AND ( CASE Table.Category WHEN 'Drinks' THEN Table1.Field1 = 1 -- Problem line ELSE Table1.Field1 = 1 AND Table1.Field2 = 1 -- Problem line END ) In the above case, my WHERE Clause is dependent on one of the fields in a table. If it has a certain value then only Table1.Field1 is used otherwise Table1.Field1 & Field2 come into action. I am getting error on the mentioned line (Problem Line). Since CASE is an expression and does not execute a statement, can anyone help me to get my WHERE Clause working... Thanks in advance...
can i use case statement in where clause. The scenario is as follow
declare @param int select * from table1 where column1 = 'asdf' column2= @param
In the above sql, if @param is '' then i don't want to include it in the where clause.I can use "like" statement for that, but i want exact value not partial value.
can i use case in where clause so that if @param is '' then i will not include in the where clause
Can I do the following? Keep getting an error stopping at the first < of the where clause.
declare @mon as int, @yr as int, @myDate as varChar(20) set @yr=2006 set @mon=1 set @mydate='01/31/2006 23:59:59'

i have wrote a query which compares two tables, returning anywhere the qty is not the same in each table:
(simple ex)
Select order_no from table1 inner join table2 on table1.order_no = table2.order_no group by order_no having table1.Qty<> table2.Qty
BUT... I need to add a table3, where there maybe (or may not be enters - thus a left join). If there is an entry in table3 then use qty in table3 and not table1... so having becomes:
CASE WHEN table1.Qty<> table3.Qty THEN table3.Qty<> table2.Qty ELSE table1.Qty<> table2.Qty END
I have someone telling me that I should have put my AND statement in the join instead of the where part, so is there a difference in the where I put it. Is there a difference in the results in any way between the two here in the results in anyway?
Example: Given a query: But let’s take a simple one here:
