SQL 2012 :: Filestream To Store Office Documents?

Jun 26, 2014

I have been asked to look into using Filestream for centralising MS Office documents (mostly excel).I am worried about the "user interface" aspect.I read that there are "this and that" APIs to read/write data to the filestream but surely one would need to write a specific interface to Word/Excel... which feels like far too hard.I am a great admirer of SQL Server but is it the right tool for document management?

We use SQL Server 2012 and have offices round the world with various internet connection quality. Our main aim is to stop the current "spreadsheet nightmare" so common with Excel.

Store Documents In Image Field

Jul 20, 2005

I am creating a document management systems using asp. I have beenresearching the different ways of handling the documents such as using thefile system and storing the path in the db, and actually storing thedocument in the db. I like the idea of storing it in the database muchbetter because I can allow users to manage documents themselves (I alreadyhave the code in place to do it if I decide), having a central system withthe ability to add my own document properties by adding fields to the table, security, and backups. I have found that most think it is better to storethe path due to performance issues and the rate the db can grow. I havelooked at our current system in access and we have a total of 4400 documents(of which probably 25% are in the database but don't actually exist anymorein the file system, one hangup about the file system) since 1988. Thiscomes to about 300 documents added each year. The other thing is the issuewith the size of the db. I don't see a whole lot of difference with thisissue because it is going to take up space in your file system too, althoughthe file system may be more efficient at storing them. I would say that 95%of our docs are under 1 mb in size and done in ms word. The last thing is using full-text search capabilities in SQL Server. I needto be able to search the contents of the field. Is there other issues around storing documents in the db to consider besidesthe above?

SQL 2012 :: Database With Filestream Enabled?

Jul 16, 2015

We have a server with a database with filestream enabled. The filestream data is in a filegroup with three files spread across 3 LUNs F:, G:, and H: each with a capacity of 1.8 TB.

The file stream containers in those three LUNs reference the same column in the same table.

The F: Drive has only 64 GB free space left. The H: However has around 700 GB free.

We are looking to move some filestream content from the container in F: to the container in H:.

SQL 2012 :: Moving Filestream To Another Database?

Oct 26, 2015

Our development organization has created an application employing FILESTREAM, which through the pilot has been incorporated into a schema within our Data Warehouse Staging database. Going to production, the development and BI teams have determined that they want it separated out into a separate database, and they'd like to separate it in the current pilot environment (DEV).

How can I best move (or at least copy) the existing FILESTREAM data from the current database into a new one?

SQL 2012 :: Deleting Already Duplicated Filestream Files?

Feb 8, 2015

I have three FileStreams (FS1 on F drive, FS2 on H drive, FS3 on E drive) belonging to the same FileStream group of one particular database (DB) which is in Simple recovery mode in the SQL Server 2012.

FS1 contains huge number of files due to which F drive is completely full.

So, I am trying to move some of the extra files from one FileStream (FS1 on F drive) to another FileStreams (FS2 on H drive and FS3 on E drive) using command:

dbcc shrinkfile('FS1', emptyfile)

Then, I take the Full and Differential backup of the database and issue the CheckPoint and try to delete the already duplicated files from the Filestream FS1 to get some space in the F drive using command:

sp_filestream_force_garbage_collection @dbname = 'DB' , @filename = 'FS1'

But still no files get deleted and I receive the output as such:

file_name num_collected_items num_marked_for_collection_items num_unprocessed_items last_collected_lsn
DB_FS1 0 0 0 25000001749500000

how to delete these already duplicated files.

SQL 2012 :: Piecemeal Restore With Filestream Database?

Sep 9, 2015

We have one database with Filestream enabled. There is one table "dbo.files" which uses Filestream.

We created a filestream filegroup Filegroup1 and added 3 data containers to it. (3 filestream data containers within the same filegroup.)

We have three LUNs F:, G:, H: each with a capacity of 2TB (That is the limitation). F: and G: are almost full. So, I restricted their growth so inserts do not happen into these data containers. Inserts are now going into H: drive which has lots of free space. Our application code prevents any sort of deletes or updates to this table. So data in the growth restricted containers will never change.

Now the database is around 6 TB in size and backups is a challenge. We are contemplating on migrating storage to netAPP and use their snapmanager console which is much faster.

However, until then, we need a solution with native SQL backups. We tried partial backups and piecemeal restore.

WE tried this on a test server :

1) Partial backup only the read-only data containers first, (F: and G:) (The plan is to back these up just once a month as this data never changes).

2) Partial backup the primary filegroup plus the third data container in the Filestream filegroup which is subject to inserts (H:)

While restoring, we tried the online restore, First, I restored the backup obtained from step 2 above with recovery option. Then I restored the backup obtained from step 1 with recovery. I see that the database was brought online. However, when I try to query the dbo.files table, I get an error stating that some files of the filestream filegroup are offline.

Excel 2007 Documents Not Displayed In Windows XP Professional Sp2 Start Menu Recent Documents List

Jan 26, 2007

Excel 2007 Documents Not Displayed in Windows XP Professional sp2
Start Menu's Recent Documents List:

Dear Microsoft Support:
I can't figure out how to get recently used Excel 2007 (new file formats) documents to show up in the Windows XP Professional (sp2) Start Menu's Recent Documents List. I checked the Internet, the knowledgebase, many parts of the MS web site, etc. for an answer but can't find one.
Are Excel 2007 documents supposed to show up in the XP Start Menu's Recent Document List? Is this a bug or do I have to do some sort of configuration to make it do so? If it's a bug, when will a fix be available?

Are these new Excel 2007 files filtered out like EXE files are which will not appear in the Recent Document List?

The Excel 2007 file types are listed in the Registry.

This question is also posted on Experts-Exchange...No solutions yet.

Thanks.

Jim.

Is 64 Bit Excel Driver (of Office 2003 Or Office 2007) Available Now?

May 27, 2006

Hi!

Today we moved from 32bit to 64bit computing environment.  64bit Window server 2003 and SQL 2005 are now our playing ground. And 32 bit Office 2003  is also installed.  Excel  in  Office program plays  important roll in our mission.

One of our routine task is that
step 1. get  Excel data files  from other websites and
step 2. extract specific data from them and
step 3. converting them into some type of data that can be compatible  with SQL

Our problem occured in step 3.  To convert data, we realised taht  64 bit excel driver, which we believe is not yet available, is required.

My questions are:

1. Is 64 bit excel driver (of office 2003 or office 2007) available now?

2. Is there any way OR IS IT POSSIBLE to use 32 bit excel driver with 64bit SQL 2005?
    If possible, please enlighten me.

I would appreciate it very much if anybody answer my questions.

Sincerely

I need a link with the path to get the file stream blob, that path could be used to download a document using any windows app like windows explorer, etc. the requirement is that path does not allow customer to navigate in filesstream share folders or see other files and only can read the file of the path,

Checking :

[file_stream].GetFileNamespacePath(2)

Allow you navigate in folders.

NON_TRANSACTED_ACCESS read_only, resolve the requirement to disable the save in file table, but allow you navigate and see other files.

SQL 2012 :: Change Existing SSRS Mail Service From Internal To Office 365

Oct 22, 2015

We were recently acquired and need to move our existing SSRS 2012 mail server from our internal SMTP service. The internal service doesn't need to have a 'real' account to send email out. Everything seems to be setup and running under the internal service.I think I need to change the Email Settings information in "Reporting Services Configuration Manager". Namely the Sender address and SMTP Server fields. But without actually making these changes, I don't see where it is going to ask for the password. Really hate to make changes on a production server.

Do I need to change the "Log On As" account in the "SQL Server Configuration Manager" as well? If so, does this need to be the same account as used in the Sender Address (above)?. there is a lot of ink about making additions to the "rsreportserver.config" file. Our existing file does not have any of these entries.

SQL 2012 :: Full Text Index How To Make It NOT To Index Embedded Or Attached Documents

Sep 30, 2015

I am using Full Text Index to index emails stored in BLOB column in a table. Index process parses stored emails, and, if there is one or more files attached to the email these documents get indexed too. In result when I'm querying the full text index for a word or phrase I am getting reference to the email containing the word of phrase if interest if the word was used in the email body OR if it was used in any document attached to the email.

How to distinguish in a Full Text query that the result came from an embedded document rather than from "main" document? Or if that's not possible how to disable indexing of embedded documents?

My goal is either to give a user an option if he or she wants to search emails (email bodies only) OR emails AND documents attached to them, or at least clearly indicate in the returned result the real source where the word or phrase has been found.

SQL 2012 :: How To Purge Old Store Procedures From Clients

Jul 11, 2014

I do have very old versions of duplicate store procedures on my databases. I know there is no "safe" way to do this using DMVs, so I am planning to combine that with a trace. But I would like to get others opinions about that.

Here's the DMV I am planning to use:

SELECT
CASE WHEN database_id = 32767 then 'Resource' ELSE DB_NAME(database_id)END AS DBName
,OBJECT_SCHEMA_NAME(object_id,database_id) AS [SCHEMA_NAME]
,OBJECT_NAME(object_id,database_id)AS [OBJECT_NAME]
,cached_time
,last_execution_time
,execution_count

[Code] ....

I will save that on a local table and run it every 5 min maybe? Or at an interval equal or lower than PLE?

SQL 2012 :: Constantly Growing Version Store

Jul 7, 2015

We have an issue with the Version Store growing constantly. According to sys.dm_os_performance_counters, "Version Generation rate (KB/s)" is growing, but "Version Cleanup rate (KB/s)" isn't. We use read-committed snapshot isolation

While dbcc opentran and sys.dm_exec_requests don't show any long running transactions, I wrote a query looking at sys.dm_tran_ active_snapshot_ database_transactions. This shows a number of long running transactions but, according to sys.dm_exec_sessions, they are all sleeping. The transactions that are running come and go very quickly, as I would expect.Could these sleeping transactions be responsible for preventing the version store from cleaning up?

SQL 2012 :: Store Attributes / Values In XML Column - Table Design

Oct 29, 2014

I'd like to create a table that will store different order items. Several order items make up one single order. Order items can have 0 or more children (max depth will never be deeper than one). Order items can have up to 150 attributes/values. The way I think this should be done is using XML column instead of the EAV type of model. My table structure currently looks like this:

* child_order_item_id (PK)
* parent_order_item_id (FK to child_order_item_id)
* order_id (FK to Order table)
* product_id (FK to Product table)
* price
* attribute_XML

How my attribute_XML should look like or how to validate the xml.

Msg 7928, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

The database snapshot for online checks could not be created. Either the reason is given in a previous error or one of the underlying volumes does not support sparse files or alternate streams. Attempting to get exclusive access to run checks offline. The error message suggests SQL had a problem creating the snapshot, but I checked through some NetApp documentation for configuring SMB 3.0 for SQL.
