SQL 2012 :: Gaps In Identity Column
Feb 13, 2014
The identity int column in my sql2012 db is not incrementing properly.
I have a table which uses an int auto identity as a primary key it is sporadically skipping increments, for example:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1004, 1005
This is happening on a random number of tables at very random times...

We just switched from Sql server 2008R2 to Sql server 2012.I am facing one problem with identity Columns "When ever i restarts my sql server, the seed value for each identity column is increased by 1000 (For int identity column it is 1000 and for big int it is 10000).
"For Example if seed value of any table was 3 then after restarting sql server will be 1003 if i again restart sql server it will be 2003 and so on."
After searching on google i found that it is a new feature (don't know what is use of it) in sql server 2012 and having only two solution if you want old identity concept
1. Use sequence object -
a) I am using same database in sql server 2008 and 2012 both so can't use sequence in 2008.
b) if i go with sequence then need not change save procedure for each table, which is bulky task for us.
2. Use Trace Flag 272 (-T272)
I can go with this solution because there is need not do any changes in my application. Some one suggested me that add -T272 in startup parameter, after this sql server identity column will work normal as previous version.I did the same but it is not working.
I don't want to do any changes in my database structure.
how to use this -T272 or why it is not working.
I don't want to use this new identity feature how to suppress it. Why -T272 is not working.

Hi,
I have a table with an identity column..How will the identity gaps be adjusted if i delete few records in the table..ie..the sequence should automatically adjusted..Is there any way for this ?
ID Name City
1 abc xyz
2 mexm mcel
3 olekc kcome
Suppose i delete the record where ID=2..still the sequence should be auto adjusted..ie.the record of ID=3 should become ID=2 automatically..there shouldn't be any gaps.

I have a table with the following specifications:
[FutureArticleId] [bigint] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[cFutureArticleTitle] [nvarchar](50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL,
[cDescription] [ntext] COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL,
[gCategoryId] [bigint] NOT NULL,
[cKeyword] [ntext] COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
[bIsDeleted] [bit] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbl_FutureArticle_bIsDeleted] DEFAULT ((0)),
[tOnCreated] [datetime] NOT NULL,
[tOnUpdated] [datetime] NULL,
[gCreatedBy] [bigint] NOT NULL,
[gUpdatedBy] [bigint] NULL,
After some insertions and deletion from the UI, obviously there are gaps in the FutureArticleId column which is an identity column.
However, sometimes while inserting the records the records are being inserted into the gap and not in the next available Identity value.
Is there any table setting which I need to do, to stop this.
Please let me know
Thanks
Ankit

We have identity functionality for integer , Similarly i want for characters .i.e.
EX:
ID Name Sal
CD101 A 1000
CD102 B 2000
CD103 C 3000
CD104 D 4000
CD105 E 5000
I want output like above, I wont provide Value for ID column. It it should take automatically while inserting data into table.(like identity column)? Is it possible in SQL Server?

I am working on a report that has 3 bars per series. I would like to add some gapping or whitespace between each bar in each series. Also how do you deal with overlapping. I know it can be done in Excel, I can't find the property of how to do it in SSRS. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I've seen this error on several of my databases again and again this week:
Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_XXXX'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'dbo.MyTable'. The duplicate key value is (whatever number here). The statement has been terminated.
The thing is, the PK is unique, and the INSERT statement does not touch that column, it touches the other ones. So SQL2012 is the one that automatically generates the next and unique available value.
How can be possible that the value to be inserted (generated by SQL2012) is a duplicate one? By the way, this was not happening on the previous SQL2005 or SQL2008 server where the databases were being hosted.
Here's my SQL 2012 version: 11.0.3000.0 (SP1 applied). Runs on top of a Win2008R2 Cluster.

My current proc updates(updates using joins of two or three tables) millions of records as per the condition provided for each department.
However, when the proc fails it writes to a ErrorTable, ERROR_MESSAGE(), ERROR_SEVERITY() and which department has failed.
Since the records are updated keeping the selected departments in loop, I get the department in a temp variable.
Now, I was asked to log the specific record where the failure was occured.
Something like log the identity column value or primary key value which record has failed.

Create a table with an Identity column, insert data / restart the server / insert more data / restart the server/ insert some more data.
My data looks like this :
Identity column
1
2
3
1002
1003
1004
1005
2002
2004
It looks like the indentity value gain +~1000 after most server restart (sometimes identity stay the same). This can be very dangerous for some datatype! The only thing google told me was this : URL...but microsoft did not comment on it yet!

I have a system log with NULL gaps between a sequence of numbers...see "BEFORE" sample below.
The number of gaps between the Sequence_ID's are arbitrary, but generally less then 50 records.
I'd like enumerate the gaps to produce the "AFTER" result, but do it with a single query or view, not through procedures.
I've been playing with windowed functions and groupings with no success. I'm guessing it'll need some recursive CTE logic, but I haven't been able to figure it out the correct loop.

After SQL server service restart, a column which is set to auto increment jumped 1000. To fix the issue, I had to add T272 trace flag to SQL startup parameters. However, I did not see the column being reseeded after the service restart, it is still showing the 1000 jump. Am I doing something wrong?
Below the log showing the flag being added to the error log:

A123 Test

Test 1
Y N 0
Y N

A125 Test

Test 9
Y N 0
N Y

but what I would like is col 1 populated As A123 until it hits A125 Â then populated A125 etc. Â I was thinking about using the iff but not getting anywhere fast.

I have a four tables called plandescription, plandetail and analysisdetail. The table plandescription has the columns DetailQuestionID which is the primary and identity column and a QuestionDescription column.
The table plandetail consists of the column PlanDetailID which the primary and identity column, DetailQuestionID which is the foreign key attribute of plandescription table and a planID column.
The third table analysisdetail consists of a analysisID which the primary and identity column, PlanDetailID which is the foreign key attribute of plandetail table and a scenario.
Below is the schema of the three tables
I have a two web form that will insert, update and delete data into these three tables in a two transaction. One web form will perform CRUD operations in plandescription and plandetail table. When the user inserts QuestionDescription and planid in this web form, I will insert the QuestionDescription Value in the plandescription table and will generate a DetailQuestionID value and this value is fed to the plandetail table with the planid. Here I will generate a PlanDetailID.
Once this transaction is done, I will show the second web form in which the user enters the scenario and this will be mapped with the plandescription using the PlanDetailID.
This schema cannot be changes as this is the client requirement. When I insert values I don’t have any problem. However when I update existing data, I need to delete existing PlanDetailID in the plandetail table and recreate PlanDetailID data for that DetailQuestionID and planID. This is because, the user will be adding or deleting a planID associated with the QuestionDescription.
Once I recreate PlanDetailID for that DetailQuestionID and planID, I need to update the old PlanDetailID with the new PlanDetailID in the third table analysisdetail for the associated analysisID.
I created a #Temp table called #DetailTable to insert the values analysisID, planid and old PlanDetailID and new PlanDetailID so that I can have them in update statement once I delete the data from plandetail table for that PlanDetailID.
Then I deleted the plandetailid from the plandetail table and recreate PlanDetailID for that DetailQuestionID. During my recreation I fetched the new PlanDetailID’s created into another temp table called #InsertedRows
After this I am running a while loop to update the temp table #DetailTable with the newly created PlanDetailID for the appropriate planID’s. The problem is here. When I have the same number of planID’s for example 2 planID’s 1,2 I will have only two old PlanDetailID and new PlanDetailID for that planID and analysisID.But When I add a new PlanID or remove a existing planID I am getting null value for that newly added or deleted planID. This is affecting my update statement of analysisdetail table as PlanDetailID cannot be null.
I tried to remove the Null value from the #DetailTable by running the update statement of analysis detail in a while loop however its not working.
DECLARE @categoryid INT = 8
DECLARE @DetailQuestionID INT = 1380
/*------- I need the query to run for the below three data.
Here i'm updating my planids that already exists in my database*/
DECLARE @planids VARCHAR(MAX) = '2,4,5'

I have table of three column first column is an ID column. However at creation of the table i have not set this column to auto increment. Then i have copied 50 rows in another table to this table then set the ID column values to zero.
Now I have changed the ID column to auto increment seed=1 increment=1 but the problem is i couldn't figure out how to update this ID column with zero value set to each row with this auto increment values so the ID column would have values from 1-50. Is there a away to do this?

I'm working with a third-party database (SQL Server 2005) and the problem here is the following:
- There are a bunch of ETL processes that needs to insert rows on a table (let's call this table T) and at the same time, an ERP (owner of T) is up and running (reading, updating and inserting on T).
- The PK of T is an Integer.
Today all ETL processes uses (select max(ID) + 1 from T) to insert new rows, so just picture the scenario. It is a mess! Everyday they get duplicate key error when 2 or more concurrent processes are trying to insert a row (with the max) at the same time.
Considering that I can't change the PK, what is the best approach to solve this problem?
To sum up:
* I need to have processes in parallel inserting on T
* I can't change anything on T
* The PK is NOT an Identity

Hi all,
The requirement is to have a table say 'child_table', with an Identity column to refer another column from a table say 'Parent_table'..
i cannot implement this constraint, it throws the error when i execute the below Alter query,
ALTER TABLE child_table ADD CONSTRAINT fk_1_ct FOREIGN KEY (child_id)
REFERENCES parent_table (parent_id) ON DELETE CASCADE
the error thrown is :
Failed to execute alter table query: 'ALTER TABLE child_table ADD CONSTRAINT
fk_1_ct FOREIGN KEY (child_id) REFERENCES parent_table (parent_id) ON DELETE
CASCADE '. Message: java.sql.SQLException: Cascading foreign key 'fk_1_ct' cannot be
created where the referencing column 'child_table.child_id' is an identity column.
any workarounds for this ?

Hi guys,
If I have a temporary table called #CTE
With the columns
[Account]
[Name]
[RowID Table Level]
[RowID Data Level]
and I need to change the column type for the columns:
[RowID Table Level]
[RowID Data Level]
to integer, and set the column [RowID Table Level] as Identity (index) starting from 1, incrementing 1 each time.
What will be the right syntax using SQL SERVER 2000?
I am trying to solve the question in the link below:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2093921&SiteID=1
Thanks in advance,
Aldo.
I have tried the code below, but getting syntax error...
ALTER TABLE #CTE
ALTER COLUMN
[RowID Table Level] INT IDENTITY(1,1),
[RowID Data Level] INT;
I have also tried:
ALTER TABLE #CTE
MODIFY
[RowID Table Level] INT IDENTITY(1,1),
[RowID Data Level] INT;

I have inherited a system which uses Identity numbers for primary key fields, but also displays them for the user to see. The user has noticed missing numbers in the sequence, sometimes just a few numbers and sometimes as many as 1000 numbers missing.
As far as I can tell the few numbers missing could possibly be explained by users deleting records or the number being generated on a save, but the save then failing. But I can't explain the huge jump of 1000.
I can find no reference to the RESEED in the code...

I've started using a SEQUENCE in a table instead of an identity.
I seem to be experiencing problems of the sequence getting reset to a lower value periodically. Inserting will work on the table, producing the next bigint in the sequence as the primary key, for days and then all of the sudden duplicate primary key errors show up. When I check, the last primary key value in the table is higher than the current value of the sequence.
For example: right now I have primary key values 6000 through 7032 contiguously in the table, all of which were generated with the sequence. Suddenly I'm getting duplicate primary key errors. A quick check of the sequence shows it's at 7002, but the last inserted row has a primary key of 7032!
I'm populating this table in one place (in the application layer), leaving the primary key null, which allows the default constraint to get the next sequence.
When the problem shows up, I've reset the sequence to the higher number in the past and all is well for many days, then the problem occurs again.
The definition for the sequence is:
CREATE SEQUENCE [dbo].[IntegrationQueueSEQ]
AS [bigint]
START WITH 1
INCREMENT BY 1
MINVALUE 0
MAXVALUE 9223372036854775807
CYCLE
CACHE 50
The default constraint for the primary key on the table is defined as:
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[IntegrationQueue] ADD CONSTRAINT [DF_IntegrationQueue_IntegrationQueueID] DEFAULT (NEXT VALUE FOR [dbo].[IntegrationQueueSEQ]) FOR [IntegrationQueueID]

I was reading this:
"Adding an identity column to a published table is not supported, because it can result in non-convergence when the column is replicated to the Subscriber. The values in the identity column at the Publisher depend on the order in which the rows for the affected table are physically stored. The rows might be stored differently at the Subscriber; therefore the value for the identity column can be different for the same rows."
I don't understand...
If I create a table with an identity column and publish it. Can the values on the subscriber be different when the data is replicated?
Suppose I have a this table:
1 Name1
2 Name2
3 Name3
Column 1 is identity field and column 2 the name of employees.
If I publish this table , the data can be inserted on the subscriber .pe, with 2 name1 and 1 name3 and 1 name2?
What about if the identify fields is a primary key?
