SQL 2012 :: Group By In Sub Query To Get Desired Results
Jun 15, 2015
I have to use a Group By in Sub query that will give me my desired results.
SELECT count(hc), CS, S_W, (SELECT COUNT(Reg_Temp)
FROM CS_S
WHERE Reg_Temp = "Reg") as [RegOnly]
FROM CS_S
GROUP BY S_W, CS
ORDER By CS, S_W
The query I have above counts ALL the Reg, I'd want it to give only the count that I'd get by using Group By clause i.e. S_W and CS.

Hi,
I have a query that I am trying to run, but I discovered I am not getting the desired results.
This query here goes across the tables as seen below. One thing that I notice about this query as I am trying to figure out the source of the problem is that it is bringing back the same results even when I change the @userID parameter.
As long as the @userID I pass exists in "tblUserDetails" then we get results back. When it doesnt exist we dont get any records.
Basically to explain whats going on. I am passing the userID of the person who has "photocomments"
Since the table "tblPhotoComments" doesnt have a column that represents who the photocomment was for, we must join
tblExtraPhotos.counterID = tblPhotoComments.photoCounterID
This way we can get details of the photo, including the owner (tblextraphotos.userID)
Any help is much appreciated..
thanks again,
mike123

Hi all,I have a SQL job where I do the following -I check for new rows in my Table "DumpResults", every now and then and get the new rows to be inserted into table "CleanTable". I use OPENXML() to get the new data to be inserted but for some reason I don't get the right data through OPENXML() - DECLARE @intDoc INTDECLARE @xmlDoc VARCHAR(8000)IF(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM DumpResults WHERE DumpResults.C1 NOT IN (SELECT CleanTable.C1 FROM CleanTable)) > 0BEGINSET @xmlDoc = (SELECT * FROM DumpResults WHERE DumpResults.C1 NOT IN (SELECT CleanTable.C1 FROM CleanTable) FOR XML RAW) SET @xmlDoc = '<TABLE>' + @xmlDoc + '</TABLE>'
PRINT @xmlDocEXEC sp_xml_preparedocument @intDoc OUTPUT, @xmlDoc--INSERT INTO CleanTable(C1, C2, C3, C4, C5)
SELECT C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 FROM OPENXML(@intDoc,'/row',1)WITH (C1 INT, C2 CHAR(3), C3 CHAR(3) , C4 FLOAT, C5 INT)EXEC sp_xml_removedocument @intDoc
END
ELSE Output that I get is - <TABLE><row C1="1" C2="AAA" C3="BBB" C4="1.000000000000000e+000" C5="2"/></TABLE>(0 row(s) affected) SO "PRINT @xmlDoc" is returning back the xml data (new results) it collected from the "DumpResults" table which isn't there in "CleanTable" but the "Select... FROM OPENXML(...)" doesn't return any result. why so? If anyone knows please reply If anyone has any better method to do it, inputs are welcome. Thanks

I have the following SELECT statement attached to a dropdown box:
SELECT [Workshop] FROM [Workshops] WHERE Workshop <> (SELECT Workshop FROM Workshop_Registration WHERE FullName = @FullName AND Completed = @Completed) ORDER BY [Workshop]
I am trying to get all workshops (50 or more) from the WORKSHOPS table that the logged in user is not already registered for. This works perfectly as long as the student is registered for at least 1 class. It populates the dropdown with all of the other classes. If they aren't registered for a class then it doesn't list any classes. The problem is definitely the subquery, but how do I make it to where if the subquery doesn't return any results (student not registered for anything), I get all of the workshops in the dropdown? Any help is appreciated!

I'd like to ask how you would get the OUTPUT below from the TABLE below:
TABLE:
id category
1 A
2 C
3 A
4 A
5 B
6 C
7 B
OUTPUT:
category count id's
A 3 1,3,4
B 2 5,7
C 2 2,6
The code would go something like:
Select category, count(*), .... as id's
from TABLE
group by category
I just need to find that .... part.

I have a query that returns the data about test cases. Each test case can have multiple bugs associated to it. I would like a query that only returns the test cases that have all their associated bugs status = closed. For instance here is a sample of my data
TestCaseID TestCaseDescription BugID BugStatus
1 TestCase1 1 Closed
2 TestCase1 2 Open
3 TestCase2 11 Closed
4 TestCase2 12 Closed
5 TestCase2 13 Closed
How can I limit this to only return TestCase2 data since all of that test case's bugs have a status of closed.

Previous to 2012, grid results from SSMS queries pasted into Excel beautifully and were easy to format.in 2008, The results from this query pasted into a spreadsheet with the query contained in a single Excel cell:
(sample - not the whole script)
select top 300
Avg_CPU_Time
,Total_Physical_Reads
,convert(datetime,Last_execution_time) as Timestamp
,Stored_Procedure
,Query_text
from dbadmin.dbo.History_CPU_IO_ByQueryAndSP
This was wonderful. I could deliver to developers wonderfully tidy reports on query resource usage with timestamps along with which stored procedure the queries came from.
Can't do that in SSMS 2012. Try it. It's a disaster. The Query_text, when pasted, spreads across multiple Excel columns, including the ones designated for other data. The result is totally unreadable.how to make the query_text stay in it's own cell? I've tried converting query_text to varchar and ntext. Same results.

Hi all,
The query below, as it stands, does a search for strings like 'Fema', that exist in the word 'Female', and returns 'female'. Now, if the word 'Acc' stands on it's own, I want to know how to return it as 'Accessories' in the result set. And yes, I've tried the obvious (When 'Acc' Then 'Accessories') but that returns a Null instead of 'Accessories'!!
Here's the query:
SELECT CategoryID, Category, CASE substring(category, 1, 4)
when 'fema' then 'female' WHEN 'Male' THEN 'Male' WHEN 'Gift' THEN 'Female' END AS CategoryGroup
FROM dbo.InventoryCategory
Thanks all,
Jaybee.

I work for a school district and new requirement we were just given for scoring some student scores.
Everything will currently be in one table to keep track of students test scores for various things. This table will contain students information and a student will be shown more than once in the table. The Student ID is what we will key off of to find the multiple instances of the student. The table contains the following columns: studentName, StudentId, teacherName, focus1, controllingIdeas1, reading1, development1, organization1, conventions1, and contentUnderstanding1. All of the columns with a 1 at the end will be numeric values with possible decimal values.
What we need to be able to do is some how perform a search for these multiple entries of each student and when found, average the 2 scores for each 7 test categories. The result needs to be a single line for each student that gives the student name, student id, and the 7 test category averages exported to an csv file.

I am trying to write a query that gives me the personal records from speed skaters on e.g. the 500 mtrs. I do this with the query:
SELECT cdsDistance AS Distance
, prsFirstName
, prsLastName
, min(crtFinalTime) AS MinTime
FROM tb....... INNER JOIN etc..
GROUP BY cdsDistance, prsFirstName, prsLastName
ORDER BY min(crtFinalTime)
In itself this works fine. However, there are complicating factors. Sometimes a speed skater has multiple PRs, meaning the he/she has the same fastest time more than once.
If these times are achieved on multple days, the 1st date is the official PR. (meaning: "Min of racedate")
If they are raced on the same day the 1st race is the PR (meaning: "Min of distancenumber")
Changing the code to:
SELECT cdsDistance AS Distance
, prsFirstName
, prsLastName
, MIN(crtFinalTime) AS MinTime
, MIN(cdsStartDate) AS RaceDate
, MIN(cdsDistanceNumber) AS DistanceNumber
FROM tb.......
GROUP BY cdsDistance, prsFirstName, prsLastName
ORDER BY min(crtFinalTime)
This gives me the wrong outcome because it gives me the "MIN" of every field, and they are not necessarily on the same row.
An option would be to calculate min(crtFinalTime), if for a person there is more than 1 result, calculate min of date, and then (if there is still more than 1 row) min of distancenumber.
Seems complicated, and I have the feeling there must be a better way (apart from: how to get this code)
Stacking subqueries in the FROM statement seems like a option be costly (time wise). There are more than 10 million rows (and growing) to run through.
As an example a few times:
DistanceFirst nameLast name Time Date Distance nr.
500 Yuya Oikawa 34.49 201311155
500 Yuya Oikawa 34.49 201311153
500 Yuya Oikawa 34.49 201311172
Yuya has 3 best times (34.49), 15-11-2013 is the 1st date, then distance nr 3 is the 1st distance raced. Therefore the 2nd row is the only row I would like to get in my endresult.

Hi Guys,
Below is example of the current structure of table1 I have at run time:
------------------------
GroupName Resourcename Week1 Week2 ..cont.. dynamically
Associates A1 0 80 ......
Assocaites A2 20 40 ......
Associates A3 50 100 ......
Principal P1 20 100 ......
Principal P2 0 0 ......
Principal P3 0 100 ......
------------------------
I want to change the above to something like below table2:
---------------------------
GroupName Status Week1 Week2 ....cont
Associates Assigned 2 3
Associates NotAssigned 1 0
Principal Assigned 1 1
Principal NotAssigned 2 1
---------------------------
I will try to explain how I am deriving table2 from table1. I have to count the number of Resource name against each Groupname for a particular week column(Weeki i 1 to n dynamic) where value of Week column is 0, then use this numbber against NotAssigned and the complementary number to be stored as Assigned.
The table formaating is lost in HTML view but just consider any gaps between fields as next column value.
Am I clear in what i am asking , if not please ask me.
Any help will be highly appreciated.

These separate COUNT queries are very fast:
SELECT COUNT(id) as viewcount from location_views WHERE createdate>DATEADD(dd,-30,getdate()) AND objectid=357
SELECT COUNT(id)*2 as clickcount FROM extlinks WHERE createdate>DATEADD(dd,-30,getdate()) AND objectid=357
But I want to add the COUNT statements, so this is what I did:
select COUNT(vws.id)+COUNT(lnks.id)*2 AS totalcount
FROM location_views vws,extlinks lnks
WHERE (vws.createdate>DATEADD(dd,-30,getdate()) AND vws.objectid=357)
OR
(lnks.createdate>DATEADD(dd,-30,getdate()) AND lnks.objectid=357)
Turns out the query becomes immensely slow. There must be something I'm doing wrong here which results in such bad performance, but what is it?

What I would like to add is a (or more?) lines that save the results in a file (csv/txt/tab?)
The name I would like the file to have is "LastName, FirstName, Date query ran, time (HHMMSS?) query ran"
The directory: D:SQLServerResults

Year
Month

And the following row groups:
Region
Product
SubType (hidden, data at the date level is summed to Product)
At the moment I'm computing the average for SubType for each Date at the Product level (giving a decimal value), so for each day I end up with a nice average, that works. However I am unable to average that average over the whole Year for a Product. The issue being that I'm trying to combine Row Groups (Product) and Column Groups (Date/Year)

Hello. I currently have a website that has a table on one webpage. When a record is clicked, the primary key of that record is transfered in the query string to another page and fed into an sql statement. In this case its selecting a project on the first page, and displaying all the scripts for that project on another page. I also have an additional dropdownlist on the second page that i use to filter the scripts by an attribute called 'testdomain'. At present this works to an extent. When i click a project, i am navigated to the scripts page which is empty except for the dropdownlist. i then select a 'testdomain' from the dropdownlist and the page populates with scripts (formview) for the particular test domain. what i would like is for all the scripts to be displayed using the formview in the first instance when the user arrives at the second page. from there, they can then filter the scripts using the dropdownlist.
My current SQL statement is as follows.
SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [TestScript] WHERE (([ProjectID] = @ProjectID) AND ([TestDomain] = @TestDomain))"
So what is happening is when testdomain = a null value, it does not select any scripts. Is there a way i can achieve the behaivour of the page as i outlined above? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
James.

Hi,
I'm trying to calculate some leagues for a website i run usuing some quite complicated querys. As the leagues are calculated with such somplicated criteria, i've had to build the leagues inot a temporary table.
What i need to be able to do is update the temp table with the results of a group by query. This gives me an error and the only way i have found to achieve this is to insert the results of a group by into another temp table, and then use that to perfom the update.
Is there something i'm missing, or is this the only way to achieve my goal ?
Thanks in advance.

Hi all - i'm trying to put together my first .Net web page (have switched from Dreamweaver to VWD - VWD keeps swapping my tab-indents for spaces, and none of the options stop it!).Here's a table that i'm trying to query: ItemID | ReviewRating | ReviewRatingOutOfAs i'm sure you've guessed, it's a reviews table, where there can be several records with the same ItemID and different (or the same) ReviewRating and ReviewRatingOutOf's. As the reviews are collected from lots of sources, the ReviewRatingOutOf will change (one review might be 3/5, while the next, for the same ItemID, could be 8/10, etc). Now, what i'm trying to do is return a list of ItemID's ordered by their RATIO (which is the sum of each ItemID's ReviewRating's divided by the sum of each ItemID's ReviewRatingsOutOf's - in other words, average score). My first guess was this:"SELECT DISTINCT ItemID FROM Reviews ORDER BY SUM(ReviewRating)/SUM(ReviewRatingOutOf)" - unfortunately that doesn't work (problems with the SUM aggregate functions, and overflow errors, whatever they are). Now, this string works: "SELECT ItemID FROM Reviews GROUP BY ItemID ORDER BY SUM(ReviewRating)" - right now, that just adds up the ReviewRatings, so an item with 10 reviews that only got awarded 1/5, 1/10, 1/8, etc (all 1's, therefore achieving a combined ReviewRating of 10 out of a very much higher ReviewRatingOutOf), would appear higher than an item with 1 review that got 5/5. Making the string into this: "SELECT ItemID FROM Reviews GROUP BY ItemID ORDER BY SUM(ReviewRating)/SUM(ReviewRatingOutOf)" (which is what I need), unfortunately gives me errors...Anyone have any ideas? Is there possibly a way to simply read all the distinct ItemID's with SQL, then get the two SUM's for each ItemID, then calculate the ratio of the two SUM's, and stick the ItemID's and the ratio into some sort of array, and have C# order the array for me, based on the ratio? I'd appreciate an example of that if possible, as i'm a complete C# beginner :-)Thanks in advance!

Two tables: CompanyPrices(CompanyID, ProductID, Price), CompanyRegion(CompanyID, Region)
ProductID is the primary key.
I want to get 10 smallest prices in each Region. In other words, I am looking for 10 cheapest prices in each region. So, if there are 20 regions, I should get excatly 200 rows having prices for products from 200 companies if there were at least 10 companies in each region.
I tried the follwoing, but get incorrect results.
select S1.Region, S1.Price from (select CompanyPrices.*, Region from CompanyPrices inner join CompanyRegion on CompanyPrices.CompanyID=CompanyRegion.CompanyID) S1 inner join
(select CompanyPrices.*, Region from CompanyPrices inner join CompanyRegion on CompanyPrices.CompanyID=CompanyRegion.CompanyID) S2 on S1.Region = S2.Region
group by S1.Region, S1.Price having count(*)<=10 order by S1.Region, S1.Price
However, if I want to get 10 cheapest products for each company, the above sql works by modifying the join condition. Instead of S1.Region = S2.Region , I use S1.CompanyID = S2.CompanyID and I get correct results for 10 cheapest products for each company.
select S1.CompanyID, S1.Price from (select CompanyPrices.*, Region from CompanyPrices inner join CompanyRegion on CompanyPrices.CompanyID=CompanyRegion.CompanyID) S1 inner join
(select CompanyPrices.*, Region from CompanyPrices inner join CompanyRegion on CompanyPrices.CompanyID=CompanyRegion.CompanyID) S2 on S1.CompanyID = S2.CompanyID
group by S1.CompanyID, S1.Price having count(*)<=10 order by S1.CompanyID, S1.Price
I am not sure what is wrong in the first query and why it does not work when the second one works. Could someone help in making the first query work to give me correct results?

So if ID 1 has multiple sports but also a greek attribute, they end up with two rows; the first row containing the combined sports values and the second row the greek valued not combined, because there was only one value in that group for that ID. For example:
ID, Combined Values, Group
1, Football Baseball Basketball, Sports
2, Baseball, Sports
3, Football, Sports
1, Lambda Sigma, Greeks
2, Delta Delta, Greeks

Hello,
I really hope that someone can help me or at least point me in the right direction. I am selecting a set of data and using the date values across the X axis. However the needs exists to group these by week, but these weeks are not the normal weeks, for - they exist as follows the month starts on the first Monday of a month, for example December 2007 starts on Monday the 3rd and the week ends on the 6th of December a so on till the fact that the last week of the month December 2007 starts on Monday the 31st and ends on January the 6th is there any way that I can create a group that could group the datetime values together in this way,
This is not best achieved in SSRS where should I be creating these groups. Any help would really be appreciated.
Many Thanks
Olaf Dedig
