Why would I see high CXPACKET waits on a database instance with only one CPU? Since the server only has 1 CPU parallelism can't be used, or are I'm missing something here!?

I want to move one database from the source SQL Server 2000 instance to a new SQL 2000 instance in another machine. I have five user databases in this source SQL instance. How should be my approach to move this single database out of this ? My understanding is restoring this database in the new instance, copying all logins to the new instance and then copying the jobs, DTS packages, alerts, operators only specific to this database will do it. Please let me know if this is exactly what I should do ..

I have to mirror 3 DBs on my sql server instance . I have restored there full backups and log backups on mirror.I have also created endpoints on principal and mirror using default ports 5022 and 5023.
know if i can use the same endpoint for the databases on principal instance ?
I am developing a process to monitors a table in a high transaction database. The process will count the number of lines in the table to verify if it has changed or it is stuck. Due to the fact that the database has a lot of transaction I don't want to execute a query on database too often.l Is there another suitable way to accomplish this goal ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedDiscovered that a geo-spatial AlwaysOn HA database (1 of 4) was not synchronizing as at a point in time earlier in the day. Suspend Data Movement appears to be working perpetually without finishing. The SQL Server services is in a Pending Changes state after an attempt to restart it from SQL Configuration Manager. The Cluster Dashboard says it is in a Not Synchronizing state, with only the one database in question having a yellow triangle, all 3 others show green.
The warning for the cluster is:At least one availability database on this availability replica has an unhealthy data synchronization state. If this is an asynchronous-commit availability replica, all availability databases should be in the SYNCHRONIZING state. If this is a synchronous-commit availability replica, all availability databases should be in the SYNCHRONIZED state. There is no abnormal data movement from the primary to the seconday.The warnings for the unhealthy database are:
The data synchronization state of this availability database is unhealthy. On an asynchronous-commit availability replica, every availability database should be in the SYNCHRONIZING state. On a synchronous-commit replica, every availability database should be in the SYNCHRONIZED state.Either a database administrator or the system has suspended data synchronization on this availability database.So how to get this database back to synchronizing state?
I work for a mid size company with the usual collection of enterprise applications. We are trying to consolidate our SQL environment consisting of around 100 databases none of which are over 100GB with the average database size around 5GB. Recently a large server was purchased as the "Big Daddy" SQL box. Obviously not all the databases will be moved to this one box but within reason a number can.
My question: What is the best way to configure the box?
1 OS & 1 Default Instance - How do we isolate loops memory leaks etc...
1 OS & Multiple instances, ie:Dedicated instance for each application. - How do you allocate CPU & memory, allow for optimum performance without putting others at risk from a rouge process?
Virtualized OS for each application with a default instance - Too much overhead impacts performance?
Future plans include offsite replication, perhaps mirroring with failover.
I'd appreciate anyone else's thoughts ideas? How have you tackled this problem in your environment?

View 3 Replies View RelatedScenerio : To keep a very large system running optimally in a VM cluster, Take PR01 and make PR02, PR03, PR04. Distribute the 45 databases and 9T+ of disk across multiple VM guest.
Each PR## is a SQL Server 2012 Enterprise guest on a VM 5.1 cluster.
So instead of PR01 needed 16 core and 128g of memory, each one will have 4 core and 32g of memory. Making VM HA more manageable. (yes, DRS rules will apply). Also provides more HBA paths and distributes i/o over more physical disk on the SAN.
Instead of a connection string having to know PR01.dbo.UserDB01, PR02.dbo.UserDB03, ect the connection would be PRDB.dbo.UserDB01. That way if needed 1) UserDB can be moved to any of the PR## 2) new PR05, PR06 can be added as needed. The end user and processes are not allowed to touch system databases, no PR## will have a user DB called the same name.
There are seperate VM guests on other VM clusters and Citrix servers that need access to PRDB. As things expand and move around, none of the connection strings need to be changed.
I am looking into RadWare and modifing level 7 information, but that is iffy and $$$$$$.
Looking for what others have done to keep a copy of a database, for read only, on another instance. Need to do this once a day early in the morning with no, or minimal, downtime at the source and target. We have applications that access this copy 24/7, so prefer not to disconnect active users, as a detach/attach or backup/restore might do. Permissions are different on each instance, so would prefer not to overlay users on destination database. Options we are looking at right now are...

Our environment for this is SQL 2012 on Windows 2012, in the same AD domain located in the same server room. The database size is 1gb. Needs to be copied around 6:30am daily. Does not need to be updated thru the day.
We have a particular database sat on SQL Server 2012 box along with about 20 other databases.
What I require is a method/Script/Audit that will simply track anyone who logs (successfully / unsuccessful) into this one particular database on the server (The single database is the key as the end user does not want information on any of the other databases that sit on the server), it also has to log time the attempt was made and it must track the logins via SQL Server or the application itself that is attached to the database.
Is it possible to put master database to single mode, if yes then whats the procedure. The reason behind the scenario is to restore master database from backup for which its strictly recommended to put the database in single mode. But I m not able to do so.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWe have SQL Server 2012 running on Windows 2008 Server. We need to copy five databases from our 'sandbox' to our test server and then to our production server. The database backup file sizes are 3 MB, 20 MB, 344 MB, 645 MB and 17 GB. We are planning on using the backup and restore method since we already have full backups and the scripts to recreate the logins/users/permissions. We believe this method provides more flexibility and control over the process. However, we have a few jobs, maintenance plans and ssis packages.
To get the jobs to the new server instance, the plan is to script out the jobs on the 'sandbox' and execute the scripts on the test server instance. Is this the best or only way to handle the jobs?How to get these maintenance plans to the new server instance? (There is no 'script out' maintenance plan option.) We may have to just recreate them on the new server instance. Is this the best or only way to handle the maintenance plans?
We have a few ssis packages. How to handle getting the ssis packages over to the new server instance (using the backup restore method)? These packages use the Project Deployment Model. Therefore, should we restore the SSISDB or open up the package file using VSS on the new server instance and change the connection information to point to the new server instance.
Just wondering if there is any reason or advantage to use the Detach and Attach method or Copy Database Wizard method? I have read where the Copy Database Wizard method handles the database's dependent objects like logins, jobs, maintenance plans, user-defined error messages and shared objects from the master database. Are there any other move/copy database methods to consider? Just trying to make sure we have thought out everything and are using the best method to copy our databases over to another server instance.
While working with a vast variety of support projects, i find a sql design where all the fields in a single form (say about 100 fields which are dump data as they are not related to any reports and searching criteria) are dumped in a sql database column in a XML format. See below an example

I've read here at [URL] that with 32 bit it's recommended to only have 10 database mirrors per instance. However, is there a limit for 64 bit SQL Server 2012?
We're having a problem where we have about 300+ databases and now any new db's we add are timing out when it comes to setting up mirroring and am wondering if this is limited by the instance.
I have a 3 node cluster on which I have installed SSAS as it's own insntance. I have created this as a named instance and can connect to it by serverinstance if I'm on the server itself. However from my desktop I get the error saying instance was not found on server name.
I have defined an alternate port and setup firewall rules and can connect via server:port but not serverinstance. Prior to making this change SSAS was running on default port of 2383 and I could connect just by servername.
I have read many articles for previous versions saying that clustered SSAS will always use 2383 and that you must connect just using servername. However and this is were it gets strange. I have a 2 node UAT cluster with SSAS setup exactly the same way I've described above and I can connect from my desktop as serverinstance.
Should I be able to connect as serverinstances for a named clustered instance in 2012 ?
We have H/A setup on SQL2012. Seems to work fine.I thought there was code I could add that would check to see if it was running on the primary node?

Signal waits are varying from 35 to 55% and cpu usage is only at 5% usage.We are using Windows Server 2012 with SQl Server 2012 Standard edition with cpu5. There are 3 instances on the server each with max memory 50gb memory and the server has a total of 190gb memory. The machine is a 12 core machine with hyperthreading enabled.

1.) Can we deploy the changes to Server2.mydatabase whilst still having Server1.mydatabase available to users?

I am using SQL Server 2012 and my AlwaysOn High Availability features is not enabled? What should I do. Is this requires any extra system requirements to be installed?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Customer running a database in a High Availability Group and I am not familiar with the set up... They have a transaction log that quadrupled in size during a data import and update which was generated by an external application. They have limited server space and would like to shrink the log again now as this import / update only happens once a year. The way this has always been dealt with in the past was by shrinking the DB and logs after the update.
Now however, when attempting to do a log or db shrink, an error message is generated which says that the log cannot be shrunk as the DB is in use as part of an Availability Group....
The more I search and try to read up on this subject, it looks like the DB has to be removed from the Availability Group before the log can be shrunk and then the Availability Group has to be re-created or restored in some way. Is there a simple solution to this conundrum?
I inherited a SQL 2012 Ent server sitting on a 2008R2 server using AlwaysOn High Availability, two nodes.
Available Mode: Synchronous commit
Failover Mode: Manual
Connection in Primary role: Allow all connections
Readable secondary: No
seesion timeout: 10
Somebody decided to give SQL server priority boost so I need to change this ASAP. So I plan on doing the following.
1. Manually fail over to the secondary, which does not have the priority boost set to true
2. change the setting
3. restart the service
4. Manually fail over
My question is with the service restart. How does SQL handle if the DB changes on the new primary while the secondary is having the service restarted. Where can I see if the DB are sync again or if not where are they in the sync process.
Disaster Recovery Options based on the following criteria.
--Currently running SQL 2012 standard edition
--We have 18000 databases (same schema across databases)- majority of databases are less than 2gb-- across 64 instances approximately
--Recovery needs to happen within 1 hour (Not sure that this is realistic
-- We are building a new data center and building dr from the ground up.
What I have looked into is:
1. Transactional Replication: Too Much Data Not viable
2. AlwaysOn Availability Groups (Need enterprise) Again too many databases and would have to upgrade all instances
3. Log Shipping is a viable option and the only one I can come up with that would work right now. Might be a management nightmare but with this many databases probably all options with be a nightmare.

If I have a job that runs every minute, and that job happens to take more than one minute to run on occassion, will SQL Server start a second instance of the job or will it be serial - one after another ?

I've got a 4 node SQL 2008R2 cluster (configured 2 active - 2 passive), and 9 instances, of which all but one are on SP1 (the most recent addition is on SP2).
I need to apply a hotfix (Cumulative Update 6 for SP1) to just one instance. Can I do this by failing over the affected instance to one of the passive nodes, applying the hotfix, and failing it back again or do I need to apply the hotfix to all nodes as detailed in:
SQL Server failover cluster rolling patch and service pack process
i.e. will it involve a little downtime for all instances on the cluster?
I came across an issue while migrating from SQL 2005 to SQL 2012 and using AlwaysOn Group. For some strange reason, when ever i connect to the Listener name for each AlwaysOn group, it list all the databases which is on the SQL instance, so i would be able to see databases that is not part of that Availability Group. I am not using default port, so have to put the port after the Name to connect and both Instance and Listener are using different port.
Testing the fail over works fine too, when i perform a manual failover, i can connect to any of the databases in the group from my application with no problem.
Considering that the Listener Port is different to the port which the instance is using?
We have a vendor that is exposing our database via a High Availability replica. They are geographically far away from us though so we would like to extract portions of the database over to our side for our reporting /warehousing purposes. I was curious if it is possible to setup snapshot replication on a high availability group?

Trying to connect it as a linked server is giving me problems. I tried putting the extra info into the provider string but keep getting the failure to initialise error. I am trying to link SQL2012 to a 2012 HA group but will also need to connect from a sql2008 server as well
I have been having issues with our SQL server for awhile now. It seems to run out of memory every few days and when I look at the memory dump, the MEMORYCLERK_SQLOPTIMIZER seem to take over memory and eventually cause the server to crash.
Here is the SQL verison we are using: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP1) - 11.0.3460.0 (X64) Jul 22 2014 15:22:00 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.2 (Build 9200: ) (Hypervisor)..It is on a VM on Windows 2012 server. It has 20gb of RAM allocated to it and the MAX Server Memory is set to 16.5gb.
I have seen the MEMORYCLERK_SQLOPTIMIZER grow to about 11gb at the time of the server crash. Why that is happening? What is causing the memoryclerk_sqloptimizer to get so high? I have looked it up and it looks like it has to do with ad hoc requests, but is there something I can do to bring that memory down when it gets so high so that I can prevent a server crash?Do we just need to add more memory or is there a memory leak somewhere?

I saw that Reporting services was consuming 9gb of ram a few days ago with no published reports. It's just a default install.

I have been looking at this statement for allowing access from a remote location to a specific database on my SQL Server (2005) from a client application.
Is it possible to do this using this method? I see lots of examples using this to expose Web Services of DB objects, however I need the client application to be able to authenticate to and access all objects in the database. If so, could some one provide a simple example of the arguments to use? For example, which protocol arguments are valid for this? I would like to use SQL Server Authentication. Is this possible?

Also I read somewhere that if one mirrored DB fails, all other mirrored DB should also be transferred to the mirror.
For example: Let's say Srv1 (principle) and Srv2 (mirror) and Srv3(witness) are SQL servers with only default instances. The SQL instance has 4 DBs (DB1, DB2, DB3, DB4) and all of them are mirrored to Srv2.
An ASP.NET application has four seperate connection strings like:

I am currently investigating aa high avg write time ms issue (145ms) which seems to be only occuring on the tempdb data files.I have followed the recommended setup of TEMPDB in that
1. Data files = number of physical cores
2. Data files and logfiles are on separate partitions away from the other databases.
3. Tempdb is presized and no incremental file increases look like they are happening with frequency.
We have sharepoint 2012 setup on other sql servers and with TEMPDB setup following the same guidelines, with far more Sharepoint activity on a similary specified hardware which is why its confusing.FileIO auditing on the partitions themselves shows that the FileIO is very fast on the partitions that the tempdb data file which leads me to beleive that Sharepoint may be the culprit perhaps due to excess use of tempdb with operations taking a long time to resolve.
