SQL 2012 :: How Server Fills Empty Spaces In Data Files

Oct 1, 2015

I understand that we shouldn't shrink data files as it might cause heavy fragmentation along with log usage, high IO/CPU etc.

In a DB in which lot of DML transaction occur, there will be empty spaces whenever deletions occur.

Will SQL Server fill that part with data when new insertions occur ?.

SQL 2012 :: DBCC Shrinkfile Empty File Not Distributing Data Evenly In Primary File Group With Multiple Files

Apr 29, 2014

Why shrinkfile empty file does not redistribute data evenly in the primary file group with multiple files:

Please run the script attached to see what the end result is.

This is what I set up last night on my test machine.

1) Create database [FGTest] size 200MB
2) Create table called TEST on primary
3) Insert 40MB of data into test
4) Create another file group called temp in primary size 200MB
5) Shrinkfile('FGTest',emptyfile) so that all data is transfered from FGTest into temp file group.
6) Add another 2 files called DATA2 and DATA3. Both are 200MB.
7) We now have 3 empty files that I want data distributed evenly on. FGTest, DATA2 & DATA3
8) Shrinkfile('temp',emptyfile) to move all the data from temp over the 3 file groups evenly

I would expect at this stage to have the following:

FGTest = 13MB,
DATA2 = 13MB,
DATA3 = 13MB

(40MB of data over 3 files should be about 13 MBish in each file)

What I actually end up with is this:

FGTest = 20MB
DATA1 = 10MB
DATA2 = 10MB

It looks as though SQL Server is allocating 50% of all data to the original file and then 50% evenly over
the remaining files in PRIMARY.

SQL Server 2012 :: Get Empty Data Set For Inserting Data?

I have 2 tables in my database.

one is Race table and 2nd one is Age Range.

I want to write a query where I can see all races and age range as column.

TblRace

ID, RaceName

TblAgeRange

ID,AgeRange.

There is no connection between this two table. I need to display result like below.

Race 17-20 21-30 31-40

A

B

I

W

How do i get this kind of empty data set so that I can fill it out in front end or any better solution. The age range will be displayed as many row as they have. It's not static. Above is just an example.

SQL Server 2012 :: Find Out If Whole Column Of Data In A Table Is Empty?

Dec 2, 2013

I have created some dynamic sql to check a temporary table that is created on the fly for any columns that do contain data. If they do the column name is added to a dynamic sql, if not they are excluded. This looks like:

If (select sum(Case when [Sat] is null then 0 else 1 end) from #TABLE) >= 1 begin set @OIL_BULK = @OIL_BULK + '[Sat]' +',' END

However, I am currently running this on over 230 columns and large tables 1.3 mil rows and it is quite slow. How I can dynamically create a sql script that only selects the columns in the table where there is data in a speedier manner. Unfortunately it has to be on the fly because the temporary table is created on the fly.

Web Service Dataset With Null Or Empty Spaces.

Sep 6, 2007

HI,
I am using XmlDataDocuments returned by webservices and query in the reports to populate the reports.

The issue I have is if the dataset used to populate the XML document has any nulls or empty spaces in any field the whole column or row is missing in the data generated by my query in the Reports. Sometimes the whole data is not being returned to the reports.

Sample query I use

<Query>
<SoapAction>http://xxxx.webservices.org/SelectReportRegisters</SoapAction>
<Method Namespace="http://xxxx.webservices.org/" Name="SelectReportRegisters">
<Parameters>
<Parameter Name="p_registerType">
<DefaultValue>All</DefaultValue>
</Parameter>
<Parameter Name="p_registerName">
<DefaultValue>All</DefaultValue>
</Parameter>
<Parameter Name="p_asOfDate">
<DefaultValue>7-1-2009</DefaultValue>
</Parameter>
</Parameters>
</Method>
</Query>

I have tested the webservice with sample data and it works well, returns data.

I use the ISNULL() in my stored procedures to avoid nulls but with empty strings, replacing them with a default value in the managed code is expensive and slows down the reports.
Is there some feature I am missing because of which nulls and empty strings are causing this problem.

I am using Reporting services 2005.

Any pointers will be truly appreciated.

Fuzzy Grouping Matching Nulls To Empty Strings/spaces

May 30, 2007

Will the fuzzy grouping task match a null value to an empty string (or spaces)? I've got 5 columns I'm matching on, and one of them may be null for certain rows but an empty string for others. Given the 4 other columns may match, will this difference stop similar columns being grouped together?

(Someone's modified my grouped data since it was deduped, which takes a while, and I'm hoping for a quick answer on this).

Thanks in advance.

SQL Server 2012 :: Show Empty Output With 0?

Oct 7, 2014

I have a sql query that gets the count of exams held in each month.

Below is the code that I have used.

select Examid, count(*) as CumCount
from [dbo].[Exams] where ExamCategory in ('Major','Critical') and Month(EXOCCRDATE) = Month(getdate())
and Year(EXOCCRDATE) = Year(getdate()) group by Examid

The code works good when we have data for the current month. When we dont have any exams for the current month, the code outputs empty values. I want the code to be altered so that when there is no value returned in the output, i want a default value shown in the output.

I have attached the sample data that I am using. In the data we dont have dates for the month of October. So when I run the code it will display empty output. So what I need is I need a text like 'No Data' to be shown when no value is returned by the query.

I tried using case but it does not work.

SQL Server 2012 :: SSIS - Stop DataFlow Task If Result Set Is Empty?

Oct 7, 2014

I am trying to create a SSIS package that will create a csv of a dataset for daily events in the database. However there will be days that there was no activity and thus an empty dataset. The package still runs fine but I want to stop the package if the dataset is empty.

FLOW:

DATA FLOW task: get daily data and put in CSV file

FTP TASK: upload the file to FTP server

MAIL/Copy file task: Move the file and then send a confirmation mail on task completion status.

Pretty simple and it all works great, I do have a few complexities in there. What I would like to add and I am at a loss is at the beginning, if the OLE DB Task resultset is empty then move to Mail Task otherwise process normally. I have tried conditional split, derived columns, the only thing I haven't tried in Script task and am not sure about that yet.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Trying To Export FOR XML Procedure Using BCP - Getting Files Padded With Spaces

Mar 19, 2015

I have a procedure that generates some XML from a bunch of tables.Then i use BCP to export it to a file. This works just fine.Here's the sample code:

CREATE TABLE dbo.t_test (i INT, z VARCHAR(30) COLLATE DATABASE_DEFAULT)
INSERT INTO t_test (i, z)
SELECT1, 'Test'
GO

[code]....

But recently, i wanted to add a test that calls this procedure. So, Test procedure uses INSERT / EXECUTE thingy to put XML data into a temp table to compare things. But then you get following error: "The FOR XML clause is not allowed in a INSERT statement."

DECLARE@T TABLE (x XML)
INSERT INTO @t (x)
EXECSPRC_EXPORT -- crashes here

So, i thought, fine, i'll wrap the FOR XML inside a sub-SQL:

CREATE PROCEDURE SPRC_EXPORT
AS
SELECT(
SELECT*
FROMt_test
FOR XML PATH('root')
)

And BCP call still works, BUT, now the file generated becomes 64kb instead of 1kb :) When i look into the file, it displays same XML, but the string is right-padded with a LOT of spaces.how BCP uses SET FMTONLY, OR that the "type" of result somehow gets changed when i do the wrapping.

SQL 2012 :: TempDB Data And Log Files On One SSD?

Mar 3, 2015

I'm having an argument with our infrastructure architect who has just gone and bought lots of SSD drives to use for our tempdb data and log files, sounds great doesn't it? There is a catch though, his plan is to add the disks to the two available slots in each blade in a RAID0+1 configuration, effectively giving you one usable drive, and adding both data and log files on to one disk.

I then pointed out that SQL Server best practice is to host tempdb data and log files on two separate drive to reduce contention. The architect then basically said that because this isn't spinning disk the issue of drive, r/w contention isn't an issue I don't agree with this and wanted to get some opinions from the community, I'm still advising that two separate disks should be used but someone just went and spent £80k ($150k) on SSDs and doesn't want to back down...

SQL Server Error Log Fills Disk

May 30, 2007

Hello,

I have the following problem:

I'am running SQL Server 2005 Express Advanced Services on a Windows 2003 Server in a hosted Environment. Some times SQL Server is beginning writing entries into C:ProgrammeMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLLOGERRORLOG until the disk is full.. After that, I have to delete the error log file (some GB of size), restart the server and everything is running fine until the log file runs amok again.

I have installed SQL Server Management Studio.

With SQL server 2005 Standard I can configure or disable Error logging in the Management Studio. But with the Express Edition it seems that is not possible.

What I want to do is (maybe with system stored procedures)

limit number of error log files by cycling it, e.g. 5 files and delete the old ones
limit the size of one log file. e.g. 100 MB

Is there an option to configure this in the Express edition of SQL Server 2005?

Thanks in advance

Regards

Rolf

I am currently investigating aa high avg write time ms issue (145ms) which seems to be only occuring on the tempdb data files.I have followed the recommended setup of TEMPDB in that

1. Data files = number of physical cores
2. Data files and logfiles are on separate partitions away from the other databases.
3. Tempdb is presized and no incremental file increases look like they are happening with frequency.

We have sharepoint 2012 setup on other sql servers and with TEMPDB setup following the same guidelines, with far more Sharepoint activity on a similary specified hardware which is why its confusing.FileIO auditing on the partitions themselves shows that the FileIO is very fast on the partitions that the tempdb data file which leads me to beleive that Sharepoint may be the culprit perhaps due to excess use of tempdb with operations taking a long time to resolve.

SQL 2012 :: Moving DB Data / Log Files Within AlwaysOn Causing (Recovery Pending)

Jan 9, 2015

I'm trying to move a log file of a database that is part of an availability group. I have been following steps from the article: [URL]

At first this worked fine for me in a test environment. When I tried it in a production environment the database on the secondary went into "Recovery Pending" state and I can't get it out.

I checked to ensure that the dB is looking in the right place for the log file, and it is. It just doesn't seem to actually use the new file. If I start and stop SQL service, the dB comes back up and is fine.

Here are the steps I'm going through and what is happening at each step:

--------------------------------------
:Connect DEVSQL --This is currently PRIMARY
USE[master]
GO
ALTER AVAILABILITY GROUP [DP-AG-DEV] MODIFY REPLICA ON N'DEVSQL' WITH (SECONDARY_ROLE(ALLOW_CONNECTIONS = NO))

[Code] ....

All is good so far. Both the Primary and the Secondard have had their logical files changed, which has not taken affect yet because there has been no failover.

--Make SQL10 the PRIMARY
:Connect SQL10
ALTER AVAILABILITY GROUP [DP-AG-DEV] FAILOVER;
GO

SQL10 is now the Primary for this AG. And, as expected, the database [AG-Test] is in "Recovery Pending" because it is now looking for the log file in the new location. I need to move the file to the new location.

:Connect DEVSQL
--Enable XP_CMDSHELL
sp_configure 'show advanced options',1
go
reconfigure
go
sp_configure 'xp_cmdshell',1

[code].....

This is where the script is failing, returning the error:

Msg 1468, Level 16, State 5, Line 5

The operation cannot be performed on database "AG-Test" because it is involved in a database mirroring session or an availability group. Some operations are not allowed on a database that is participating in a database mirroring session or in an availability group.

Msg 5069, Level 16, State 1, Line 5

ALTER DATABASE statement failed.

I can not get the dB to recognize the log file at it's new location.

If I restart the SQL Service, it comes back fine, which seems to indicate to me that it is not a permission problem and confirms that the file is in the right place.

How do I force SQL to look for the log file again without restarting the service?
