Dropping Columns With Default Constraints

Oct 13, 2004

Hi, I want to drop a column from a table with default constraint. It is giving me error..
------------------
Server: Msg 5074, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The object 'DF__ACTIVITY___ROLLU__108B795B' is dependent on column 'ROLLUP_BGT_COST_FIXED'.
Server: Msg 4922, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN ROLLUP_BGT_COST_FIXED failed because one or more objects access this column.
-------------------------

Here is the drop statement
-----------
DROP STATISTICS ACTIVITY_BASELINE.ROLLUP_BGT_COST_FIXED
ALTER TABLE ACTIVITY_BASELINE DROP COLUMN ROLLUP_BGT_COST_FIXED;

How can I first drop the constraint?

SQL Server 2012 :: Find Common Link Between Two Tables In Database Without Key Constraints?

Jul 17, 2015

CREATE TABLE [Table 1] (
Id varchar,
TableTwoId varchar,
OtherData varchar )
CREATE TABLE [Table 2] (
Id varchar,
MoreData varchar )

What is the link between these two tables?

I have databases that have zero keys defined, no foreign key constraints, no unique value constraints. I cannot assume that an Identity column is the Id. The end game is be able to output that [Table 1].[TableTwoId] = [Table 2].[Id] but cannot assume that all linkage in the database will be as simple as saying "if the field name contains a table name + Id then it is the Id in that table."

Currently have written a script that will cycle through all columns and start identifying keys in singular tables based on the distinctness of the values in each column (i.e. Column1 is 99% distinct so is the unique value). It will also combine columns if the linkage is the combination of one or more columns from Table 1 = the same number of columns in Table 2. This takes a long time, and it somewhat unreliable as IDENTITY columns may seem to relate to one another when they don't.

Does anyone know a query that will return the value defined on a default constraint for a database table.column ?

So, if I have table :

column1 int not null,
column2 char(4) default 'AAAA'
)

Something that would give me the 'AAAA' back ?

Thanks,

Dropping Default Constraints

Hello

We've got a product which uses merge replication with anonymous pullsubscriptions.
At most custome sites it's running on SQL Server 2000, a few with SQL 2005, which is running wich replication compatibility level 80 due to .
As it happens, db schema changes. So I have to drop a column with a default constraint. First the constraint, then the column.
This works excellently on the publisher - but not on the subscriber

Need Help With A Query That Retrieves DEFAULT Constraints

Dec 6, 2005

Hi guys,

I am trying to write a query that seaches for all DEFAULT constraints in a database and prints the column with the default value, the value of the default, and the name of the default constraint.

So far I have the two queries that let me get all the information I need.

SELECT Name FROM sysobjects
WHERE xtype = 'D'

SELECT column_default, column_name FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS
WHERE column_default IS NOT Null

I am unable to merge them into one query. I cannot seem to find a commun field to both of them.

Many thanks in advance.

Use DEFAULT CONSTRAINTs Or BOUND DEFAULTs?

Oct 30, 2005

I am doing a little research on Google about this topic and I ran intothis thread:http://groups.google.com/group/micr...dc13d4ee6758966I read SQL Server MVP Louis Davidson's post saying:"Actually they are more likely to drop the concept of bound defaults.Constraints are the standard way to do this, and really should be the wayyou create defaults anyhow."Even I read in the Microsoft SQL Server Introduction (SQL 7 bookpage 244, however we're using SQL Server 2000):"Constraints define rules regarding the values allowed in columns and arethe standard mechanism for enforcing integrity, preferred over triggers, rules, and defaults. They are also used by the query optimizer to improveperformance in selectivity estimation, cost calculations, and queryrewriting."Why constraint defaults are better? The second sentence about constraintshaving better optimization, I am guessing they don't mean this aboutDefault Constraints, rather the other type of constraints?Because I don't see how a Default Constraint have anything to do withperformance? Isn't default only to do with new records being created? At work we are setting all tables' columns to have constraint defaultsof 0 or ' ' (space character) in order not to have any column with theNULL value. Therefore we have dozens of files containing statements like:alter table TABLE1 add constraint TABLE1_ID_DFDEFAULT(' ') FOR IDgoalter table TABLE1 add constraint TABLE1_QUANTITY_DFDEFAULT(0) FOR QUANTITYgoFirst I was thinking to create 3 SQL Defaults called:DefaultZeroDefaultSpaceDefaultDateand then bind these defaults to all the columns of all tables excludingprimary keys. After creating the tables I would enumerate throughall the columns and bind one of these three Defaults based on theirdatatype:number = DefaultZerotext type = DefaultSpacedate type = DefaultDateAnd then unbind the ones that we specifically need to specify otherdefault values. So my question is should I do this by using sp_binddefault or stickwith using Default Constraints inside a table/columns loop code?Thank you

Adding New Columns With Check Constraints Using Same Batch

Jul 11, 2006

I'm using a stored procedure to add fields to an existing table.

These fields must have check constraints and I need to use one T-SQL batch.

In Sql2000 Ok. In Sql2005, if table exists, I get error "invalid column xxxxx" in Add Constraint statement before new column creation.

the code is

Declare @Setup bit

Set @Setup = 1

if @Setup = 1 Begin

--Alter Table MyTable Add MyField Numeric(1, 0) Not Null Default 3

Exec mySp_Add_Column 'MyTable', 'MyField', 'Numeric (1, 0) Not Null', '3'

If IsNull(ObjectProperty(Object_Id('xCK_MyTable_MyField'), 'IsConstraint'), 0) = 0

Alter Table MyTable Add Constraint xCK_MyTable_MyField Check (MyField >= 1 And MyField <= 3)

End Else Begin

-- drop column

End

GO

If MyTable does not exist and, naturally, I add it before of check constraints (using another Sp which add tables) ok.

If I add FK to new fields, ok.

Now I have to split batch in two parts as workaround...

Can anyone tell me if this is a bug or a "fix" for previous versions?

Many thanks,

Giulio

SSIS Task Transfer SQL Server Objects Task And Default Constraints On Tables

Feb 21, 2008

I am using the "Transfer SQL Server Objects Task" to copy some tables from database A to database B including data.

The tables, primary key constraints, Foreign key, data and all transfers nicely except for "DEFAULT CONSTRAINTS" on the tables.

I have failed to find any option in the "Transfer SQL Server Objects Task" task to explicitly say "copy default constraints". So I guess logically it should happen automatically but it doesn't. I hope it is not a bug :-)

Any option anyone knows will help.

Thanks.

SQL 2012 :: Check Constraints Have A Definition That Is Longer Than 4000 Characters

Oct 14, 2015

I'm putting a process together to run a DBCC CHECKCONSTRAINTS process against copies of client databases. The author application doesn't set the constraints as trusted, and therefore we need to check the integrity of the data.

The problem is that some of the Check constraints have a definition that is longer than 4,000 characters. When this is the case, DBCC CHECK CONSTRAINTS fails. One option is that I write a cursor to select the constraints that have a definition less than 4,000 characters and then call the DBCC command for those particular constraints. However, I'd prefer a more elegant approach - ideally a way to run DBCC CHECKCONSTRAINTS against all constraints regardless of the length of the definition

UGH! Failed To Enable Constraints. One Or More Rows Contain Values Violating Non-null, Unique, Or Foreign-key Constraints.

Jan 9, 2007

I know this is probably a flick of a switch but I cannot figure out which switch.  Setup is SQL Server / Stored Procedures / DAL / BLL(skipped for testing) / PL.  The stored procedure queries from only one table and two columns are ignored because they are being phased out.  I can run the stored procedure and preview the data in the DAL but when I create a page with an ODS linked to the DAL and a GridView I get this error.  I checked every column that does not allow nulls and they all have values.  I checked unique columns (ID is the only unique and is Identity=Yes in the table definition).  I checked foreign-key columns for values that are not in the foreign table and there are none.  Any ideas why do I get this?

Failed To Enable Constraints. One Or More Rows Contain Values Violating Non-null, Unique, Or Foreign-key Constraints.

Jan 17, 2008

Hi,
I am getting the above error when trying to load a report into my Web Application, I have tracked the error down to one specific field in my database. Even though this field is a NVarChar field and is of size 30 it would seem that  there is an issue returning the value from the field. I can write it into the database no problems but when I try to get it out of the database it returns the above error.
e.g
MOB 401.908.804 - Fails
0401.907.324 - okay
8239 9082 (pager) - fails
Anyone got an idea on how to fix this????
Regards..
Peter.

Adding DEFAULT Columns

Jul 23, 2005

HiI have a table that currently has 466 columns and about 700,000records. Adding a new DEFAULT column to this table takes a long time.It it a lot faster to recreate the table with the new columns and thencopy all of the data across. As far as I am aware when you add a DEFAULT column the followinghappens:a) The column is added with a NULL propertyb) Each row is updated to be set to the DEFAULT valuec) The column is changed to NOT NULL.However, adding the column as NOT NULL with the DEFAULT seems to take alot longer than if I do steps a) - c) separately. When I say a long time, adding just a single DEFAULT column takesaround 6 hours. Surely it should not take this long? There is a trigger on this table but disabling this does not seem tomake much difference. Can anybody give me any advice on the use of DEFAULT columns please? When should they be used, benefits, disadvantages, alternatives etc. Also should it really take as long as it is taking or is there aproblem with my setup? If I am honest I can't see why DEFAULT columns should be used as thevalues could always be inserted explicitly via the applicationThanks in Advance.Paul

Default Constraint On Columns Pros And Cons?

Oct 26, 2007

Are there any vices to using default constraints on all columns in your table.
For example an Int that defaults to 0
or a char or varchar that defaults to ''

I know that 0 and Null are not the same thing. But if your programs don't have the concept of NULL then you have to convert the NULL to zero.

So, DEFAULT CONSTRAINTS on every column. Is it good or Bad?

Why Do Some System Views Have Columns With Different Collations Then The Default Collation?

Oct 8, 2007

I'm recreating many of my DBA scripts that no longer work in 2005 due to the rework of system tables. It's a risk I lived with knowing that someday the system tables would change. I'm now encountering collation problems, which I do not understand. I know how to fix the problem, but I don't know why the collation issues exist in the first place.

Run the following command.

Select * From sys.all_objects a JOIN master..spt_values b on a.type = b.type

You will receive the following error.

Msg 468, Level 16, State 9, Line 1

Cannot resolve the collation conflict between "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS" and "Latin1_General_CI_AS_KS_WS" in the equal to operation.

Now run sp_help 'sys.all_objects' and look at the collation defintion for columns "type" and "type_desc". In my environment they have a collation of Latin1_General_CI_AS_KS_WS. This is different then the overall default collation of SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, thus causing the error.

My question is why did Microsoft need to make this collation different for these columns?

Any ideas?

Thanks, Dave

Find Max Values From 3 Different Columns?

Mar 9, 2008

Hi I want to find 3 different columns maximum values in one shot. Like I tried to use a reader to go through results but it kept coming back with index out of bounds. Right now to get it to work I got to use a ExecuteScalar() get the first columns max value and then open the connection again(since it seems after ExecuteScalar() it closes the connection) and then do the ExecuteScalar() again. Open the connection again and do the ExecuteScalar() again. Theres got to be a better way of doing this.

Find Lowest Value In 3 Columns

Jun 2, 2008

Im having trouble finding a solution to comparing columns to find the lowest value.

Example

Row 1

COL 1 = 10
COL 2 = 20
COL 3 = 60
COL 4 = 5
COL 5 = 35

I would want to return 5.

I tried to write a case statement such as below but am unable to use Logical Operators.

WHEN C1 <= C2 and C1<= C3 THEN C1
WHEN C2 <= C3 THEN C2
ELSE C3

any help would be great.

Thanks,
Nick
