Connecting To Online Database Using Local Enterprise Manager
Jul 23, 2005I have Enterprise Manager on my local machine. For the last twelvemonths it has been connecting without problem to my online SQL Serverdatabase provided by my ISP.Three weeks ago the ISP applied some sort of extra securityarrangements to their SQL Server to allow access only through port1433. they have told me to configure an alias using Network Client andto register this alias in the usual way using my Enterprise Manager.My problem is that despite creating the alias in exactly the wayinstructed I just cannot connect to online database. I keep gettingthe SQL Server does not exist or access denied when I try to connect.As a result of advice obtained I have tried using the lite version ofthe 'littleADmin' tool available fromhttp://www.mylittletools.net/scripts/en/mla_sql/Using this useful looking software I find I cannot connect to theonline SQL database when it is installed on my own local machine butif I install it on my website it does connect without problem to myonline SQL. Server databaseHowever I need to use my more powerful Enterprise Manager to connect,my question (at last!) is:1. Is there likely to be a problem trying to connect to my onlinedatabase from Enterprise Manager on my local machine as a result ofthe new security arrangements. In other words, is there somethinganalagous to what is happening with the 'littleAdmin tool' wherebyusing Enterprise Manager I cannot connect from my local machine forsome reason obvious to everyone except myself??or2. Is it possible that there is some problem arising from Net Client?(the aliases appear in Enterprise Manager OK)I know my ISP should be answering this sort of question but they justdon't seem to know. I do not havepermission to create a backup device and I understand this is normalpractice.I am not using Enterprise Manager to administer the online database.I know I can back up the structure of the database using SQLscripts.My question is:How do I back up on my own machine the data contained in the onlinedatabase tables I have created? I have done a bit of searching around and cant find a clear answer to this question.
Current Setup
Desktop application (c#) that connects to a SQL Server 2005 express database on the same local network as the application (currently 3 users)
It is only a very small company and has just taken on their first remote worker, but expects to take on another 6-8 over the next few months. They have asked for the database to be moved online.
The application was written in such a way that everything has been done using no stored procs, or views, it is all native SQL.
This will be my first DB hosted online and before I go ahead and do anything I just wanted to make sure what I have to do is correct, sorry if this is a very basic question, although I have been programming for a long time, I have never had the chance to do any online databases before.
Will this work.
1.Find a SQL Server 2005 Hosting company.
2.Move the database to the server.
3.Setup the users permissions.
3.Alter the connection string in the application to point to the new location.
So the only thing that would change would be a new connection string in the application preferences?
Or am I living in a dream world, because nothing is ever that simple.
One thing I am worried about is the security/visiblity of the database and data as it travels from the server to the client and back.

Updating Online SQL 2005 Database From Local Database
Jan 30, 2007I have my first small SQl Server 2005 database developed on my localserver and I have also its equivalent as an online database.I wish to update the local database (using and asp.net interface) andthen to upload the data (at least the amended data, but given thesmall size all data should be no trouble) to the online database.I think replication is the straight answer but I have no experience ofthis and I am wondering what else I might use which might be lesscomplicated. One solution is DTS (using SQL 2000 terms) but i am notsure if I can set this up (1) to overwrite existing tables and (2) notto seemingly remove identity attributes from fields set as identities.I know there are other possibilities but I would be glad of advice asto the likely best method for a small database updated perhaps onceweekly or at less frequent intervals,Best wishes, John Morgan

Nov 21, 2014I have Enterprise version of SQL Server 2012 & SQL server 2008. I understand that Image/Text/NText is obsoleted and should not be used. That being said I dont understand why I couldnt rebuild the following clustered index, while I could with nonclustered index, this happens on both SQL 2008 and 2012. Here are the DDL.

An online operation cannot be performed for index 'IX1_Demo' because the index contains column 'Image' of data type text, ntext, image or FILESTREAM. For a non-clustered index, the column could be an include column of the index. For a clustered index, the column could be any column of the table. If DROP_EXISTING is used, the column could be part of a new or old index. The operation must be performed offline.
--Online rebuild works fine on non clustered index
ALTER INDEX IX2_Demo ON Demo REBUILD WITH(ONLINE = ON)--It seems to me that some how having the Image datatype column in the table is an issue. eventhough that column is not part of the index.

I installed 'Failover Cluster Manager' now I don't see 'Nodes' to add up.Should I run 'Validate a configuration Wizard'? or something else.. Can't find online to setup 'Alwayson' from the scratch...Will I able to setup 'Always on' on same server but different instances like mirroring? or has to be different servers?

SQL 2012 :: Rebuilding Online Clustered Index Locks Table
Jun 3, 2014I was under impression that rebuilding index online largely means that the index will remain available for use during rebuild and my procs and query will be able to use it during rebuild. Also my understanding was that table will be locked very briefly while the schema change will be completing.But when I was rebuilding the clustered index online on a large table with some 3 million records, the table got locked and I was not able even to read the data from it for some 5 minutes. Then I cancelled the operation as it was production server and it was one of our main transaction table.
Is rebuilding index online supposed to work this way? The table has no other index.The parameteres I used are:
REBUILD WITH (PAD_INDEX = ON, SORT_IN_TEMPDB = ON, ONLINE = ON, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON, FILLFACTOR = 95)

Nov 3, 2015We have SQL cluster installed on top of windows cluster on VM environment. Node1 and Node2 under Windows Failover Cluster. SQL instance is currently on node2 the instance is up and running, but SQL Cluster service remains online pending and it restarts the instance on every 5 minutes.
SQL Browser service are running successfully.TCP/IP ports are enabled and configured.If we start the SQL server agent it is on for seconds and stopped immediately .Cluster Service is attempt to connect to the SQL service every few minutes (setting in SQL cluster resource) for the IsAlive check, if this fails then the SQL resource is restarted even if the instance was online. Hope this is what happening exactly.

Apr 3, 2014I'm looking for a solution to have cross data center automatic failover in the event of a data center loss for highly critical databases. I would like to have local HA and also automatic failover to the DR site. This does not seem possible with AlwaysOn.
Is my only option for automatic cross data center failover to build a node in one data center and a node in the other data center with a node/FS at a third data center in order to maintain quorum? I'd like to have local HA in the mix but that doesn't seem possible.What pattern for the highest data security and also availability?
SQL 2012 :: Connecting To Local Server Instance From Access
Aug 4, 2014First time I've tried doing this - I have SQL Server 2012 installed on my local machine with an instance running (which was set up under an administrator account, not mine, which has no admin rights), and I'm trying to create a linked table from Access (also on the local machine) to a table on the server.
I tried creating a DSN using Windows Authentication, using the server name which is the same as my computer name, and got the error "Error 18452, Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication".
I then created a SQL authentication user ID and password, and tried the same thing using that instead, and got "Login failed for user <myusername>"
Is there some particular setting on the local instance I need to change to allow this kind of connection, or do I need to use something other than the server name to connect, such as an IP address? Remember that I have no admin access on this machine so any solution would have to avoid requiring that.
SQL 2012 :: Moving TempDB To Local Non-clustered Drive
Sep 11, 2014We are seeing very high Average Disk Queue Length numbers in one of our clusters (both nodes of the cluster are Virtual, but have their own dedicated virtual environments). Our main data drive also houses TempDB, which I would like to move.
Each node in the Active/Passive cluster are running Windows Server 2012 Standard 64bit and SQL Server 2012 Enterprise 64bit. There is a separate drive for Log files and data files.
The data files also have TempDB on them as previously mentioned. I am reading that you can set up a local disk on each node of the cluster, with the same drive letter and path and then move tempdb as you would with a stand alone SQL Server.

Other solutions work well except when exporting data. The program pulls data from query and exports into .csv file. The messages I get are -

Local SQL Server Instances Not Showing Up On Local Servers Tab Of Management Studio Logon Screen
Oct 2, 2007We have a 64-bit VM server running SQL Server 2005. The SQL Server on this particular VM server has 6 local instances installed. On the Management Studio logon screen I can type the full name of the local instance and connect to it, however if I press the drop down in the Server name field, choose Browse and select the Local Servers tab there is nothing listed under Database Engines.
Any idea why the 6 local instances don't show up under Database Engines? This is preventing me from installing a vendor application because their installer looks for local SQL Server instances on this server, but if SQL Server won't even show the local instances then the installer doesn't see them either.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have installed SQL Server 2005 in my machine. When I try to connect to the SQL server with the server name as SUNILKUMAR I am able to connect but when I try to connect to the same server with the server name as (local) I am not able to connect. SUNILKUMAR is my machine name and SQL server is running locally.

There is a central server which will create a publication called inventory
The laptops which host the windows application will be subscribers to the central server using merge replication
The client now wants the PDA using SQL Mobile to synchronize with the local subscirber database on the laptop using active sync. They dont want to do it via WIFI to the IIS Server at the central server
I have been reading for days and I am still unsure whether this is possible to do.
I know Appforge provide a conduit for palm to access synchronization but not local sql databases

How do I go about moving a database from 1 drive to another? The source drive (C is local to the server, but the target drive (E is on a Storage Area Network (SAN), although it is still a local drive for the server. I want to move the database from C: to E:. Everything is working fine on my local computer but when i published the web site on a remote computer i get the error "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed" (only in pages that try to access the database)
