User 'sa' Is Locked Out

Sep 6, 2006

I just brought SQL Server 2005 up on Windows Server 2003 a few days ago. Everything was going great up until a few minutes ago. I tried to connect using the Management Console and get the message

Login failed for user 'sa' because the account is currently locked out. Your administrator can unlock it.

It's the administrator that's locked out!

Do I have to reinstall SQL Server all over again?

Identifying Difference Btwn System And User Objects??

Mar 17, 2000

Does anyone know the logic that Enterprise Manager/SQL Server uses to distinguish system objects from user objects. I've looked through all the sysobjects in the database and there doesn't seem to be any unique logic for seperating all objects. User tables are easily distinguished from system tables (U/S) but thats not the case with stored procedures and views. I'm looking for suggestions...
Thanks,
Adam

TRUNCATE TABLE In A Sproc W/locked-down User

Sep 18, 2006

Hullo folks, I'm having what I assume is a fairly mundane security issue.

I have a SQL login that I am trying to restrict as much as possible. This account's sole goal in life is to hit the server, return some usage statistics, then truncate the table it received the statistics from. I would like to refrain from granting this login permissions on the physical target table if possible.

Usually I can wrap up "protected" operations in a stored procedure, then grant exec permissions for my user and I'm good to go. However, TRUNCATE TABLE gets cranky with me when I attempt the above method. I suspect that has to do with the fact that TRUNCATE TABLE is effectively modifying the table itself as opposed to merely deleting data.

Is it possible to grant this login ONLY execute permission on a stored proc that TRUNCATE's tables without giving the user any physical permissions? Am I going about this the wrong way?

SQL 2000 Locked In Single User Mode

Oct 20, 2006

I have gotten my production version of SQL locked into single user mode. We recently upgraded to a clustered configeration and when I went to pause the system to get control I was told Pause was not available in a clustered environment. I restarted the service with -m [single user] but couldn't run Enterprise Manager as it appeared to take the only user slot and not give me one. Then I hit on startingup with Query Analyzer and that worked but now how do I get it back into multi-user mode. I placed the -m in the settings using Enterprise manager; could I stop the service and restart at the cmd prompt using -f [minimal config] and get Enterprise manager running? Any assistance appreciated.

SQL 2012 :: What If We Locked Down All Databases To A Single Interface

Aug 30, 2015

Would this go a long way towards securing the data?

Database.Store(this)
Database.Delete(this)

Where "this" is a single object mapped to a single stored procedure.

Two parameters are recommended: one to identify user, and one to specify an "action" or different SP.

SQL 2012 :: Identifying Specific Blocker Statement When It Is Part Of Explicit Tran

Jul 2, 2014

App developers are complaining that a blocking report I sent them today does not have enough info to troubleshoot and fix the root cause of the blocking.(I used SQL Sentry to get the report and send to the users, but I think my question is more fundamental than just using one 3rd-party tool.)The reason for the complaints is that the top blocker is a SELECT stmt on TableA that is not the Wait Resource of the blocking (TableB).

I explained that this is likely because the "blocking" SELECT stmt on TableA is part of a larger explicit tran that includes TableB, and that they need to look through their code to identify the SQL stmt that is the root cause of the blocking. They would like that root statement identified in the blocking report, but I don't think it is possible to get to that through DMVs.

SQL Server 2012 :: Query To Find User Who Last Modified User Roles / Access?

Dec 6, 2013

I would like to know if there is a way to find out who changed a users roles/access WITHOUT using the audit function. For example, if a user account was created and given SA access then changed to read only, how can I find out who made that change? I tried searching for an answer, but kept getting no results. I'm thinking this may tie into the sys.sysusers view?

SQL 2012 :: How To Grant A New User Same Direct Privilege To Tables As Existing User

Feb 18, 2014

I am relatively new to sql developer. There is a new user that just joined our organization. I am trying to grant him the same direct grants privilege to the tables that an existing user has. The existing user has a ton of direct table access privileges and it will take days if I had to do each grant one by one like: grant select, insert, delete, update on 'table name' to 'user id'. Is there a way of copying or inserting an existing user's privilege and granting it to a new user.

SQL 2012 :: Moving SSIS Solution To Another User - Reset User Encryption Key

Oct 22, 2014

I have an SSIS package built by another developer, and now that I'm running it under my login the passwords won't save. The solution and packages are setup with ProtectionLevel EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey, but how do I get the User Key to reset so I can now save passwords? I can re-enter them, but whenever I enter hte password and test it then click OK it still has the red arrow next to the connection as if there's an error. I can create new connections and those passwords save fine, but with 40-50 items in this package I hate the thought of having to go into each and change the connection.

I tried changing the package and solution to DontSaveSensitive then rebuilding and closing then reopening, I hoped there was some option to reset the User Key just as if I created the solution. If this option doesn't exist why?

Identifying Index Use

Aug 20, 2001

Hello,

I have recently started working on a OLAP application. The database is around 35 gig, with over half of that space being taken by the indexes. What has happened is previous developers have added indexes to attempt to improve the performance of a select statement (for reporting). Some of the indexes work, but many do not.

I would like to drop the ineffective indices. What I would like is a way to find if indexes are being used, preferably by object name. Is there a third party vendor that can monitor objects and how much they are used? Is there another way to do this using SQL?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

How can get an object's dependencies in SQL Server. For example it I have written a procedure which accesses some tables inside it then the procedure is said to be dependent on that table. Or one procedure might call another procedure and hence dependent.

Can I know an object's dependent objects from any system table. I think Oracle has a table USER_DEPENDENCIES which provides this info (I may be wrong :-().

Identifying Filler

Mar 14, 2006

Some columns in transaction tables are "mandatory fields" on the dataentry screens, and as a result tend to accumulate junk entries, wherethe user puts something, anything, in the window in order to get theGUI to accept the screen. This filler isn't as elaborate as LoremIpsum, but more likely characters from adjacent keys on the second rowof the keyboard, like "lkjkljl". This non-data gets in the way ofapplications that use the data. I wonder if there is a way torecognize and ignore this stuff -- I would assume it's a well-knownproblem, but I haven't found any literature on it. Any pointerswelcome. And sorry if this is off-topic for a DB group. Thanks,Jim Geissman

Identifying Quotes

Mar 23, 2007

Has previous work been done on this? Is their a library one can download? Here's the problem. In an aricle a person or author may make a statement about a subject or a person. I am making a database on this.

For example, here in Israel, PM Olmert may make a statement on the teacher's strike or on Abu Mazen. The article may say, speaking of Mazen, Olmert said such and such. PM Olmert said, "xxxxxxx......." with the previous material making it clear whathe was speaking of.

Right now I have ugly code. Is there a neat way of doing this?

If this is the wrong forum, can somebody direct me to the right forum?

Thanks.

In this regard need to create a view to reflect the info in the order

Region_ID (Ascending)
Branch_ID (Asc)
Customer_ID (Asc)
Transaction_ID (Asc)

But, at the same time, also want to include two additional columns identifying or even inserting 1's against each of the first Customer_ID considering the first two columns, and the second one on the single column itself? In other words consider the following sample, how to add 1 to the last two columns where either the Customer appears for the first time in context with the Region and Branch Fields or to be appearing on it's own for the first time:

Region
Branch
Customer
Transaction

SQL 2012 :: User Database Backups

Jun 2, 2014

I have inherited a new SQL Server 2008 database server and can not figure out how my user databases are being backed up. This database server is running under a VM.

All the user databases are being backed up nightly per the SQL server log. The backups are written to a virtual disk and is kicked off by the NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM user. I can not see the virtual disk. A restore task does not provide any information about the last backup. I have created a new database, and it is automatically included in the next set of backups.

I have looked at the windows event viewer with out any luck. There are no SQL Server Maintenance Plans or Agent jobs that call a backup. I have also checked the Windows Task Scheduler and can not find any task that does a backup.Could the backups be called from another server ?
