LocalDb cannot restore a backup whose original data and log files are in different folders

I have the need to delete old backup files via TSQL job. Found this solution online:
PushD "
emoteservershareDIFF" &&(
forfiles -m *DIFF*.sqb -d -1 -c "cmd /c del /q @path"
) & PopD
It works remotely if I run it via command prompt. But when I add this to a TSQL job on my remote SQL instance, it runs without deleting anything. What I'm missing?
I can't connect to LocalDB using Visual Studio for Web Express 2012 or SMSS 2012 in a Windows 8 environment. LocalDB is installed and some things do work, however. The basic error is the very common:
Cannot connect to (LocalDB)v11.0.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.
(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 50 - Local Database Runtime error occurred. Error occurred during LocalDB instance startup: SQL Server process failed to start.
In a command window, I can query the state of LocalDB an "info" parameter:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server110ToolsBinn>sqlLocalDB info
SportsStore
TestOfLoc
v11.0
The first two are tests created at the command line using sqlLocalDB.I have reinstalled and repaired LocalDB several times with no errors reported.
Hi everyone,
already tried this in other SQL forums, but maybe i have some luck here.
I need mainly to restore database backups from customers. They arrive in all kind of formats (zip, rar, gz). I'd like to be able to restore those directly from the compressed file, because i'm talking up to 7GB rar files which take a while to uncompress in a separate step.
I'm working for 6 years in R&D environments, but mostly on Linux/Oracle where this is an easy task using pipes, but i haven't found a sinlge web page, post or even script to do this with MSSQL. The VDI is not really what i'm looking for, so aren't backup software like SQLBackup, Litespeed etc. because i can't force the customer to use those.
Anybody any idea or even the same problem maybe with solution?
Thx.
I scheduled automatic backup process but its only showing backup of the only one .sql file in the backup folder. Other created .sql files are not backed up. Why is it so?

Hello,
I am attempting to restore the database from within VB.NET application I am making the following 3 calls:
RESTORE FileListOnly FROM DISK = 'C:MyDatabase.dat'
USE Master RESTORE DATABASE MyDatabase FROM DISK = 'C:MyDatabase.dat' WITH NORECOVERY, MOVE 'MyDatabase' TO 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataMyDatabase.mdf', MOVE 'MyDatabase_log' TO 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataLDFMyDatabase.ldf', REPLACE
RESTORE DATABASE MyDatabase FROM DISK = 'C:MyDatabase.dat'
using SMO. This logic works fine with small *.dat files, however when using *.dat file of about 4Gb I get an error on the 3d restore database call:
ExecuteNonQuery failed for Database 'master'.
An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch.
Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
Operator aborted backup or restore. See the error messages returned to the console for more details.

The same program/logic also works fine when I use MS SQL 2005 and it runs fine from MS SQL 2005 Query Analyzer for both 2005 and 2000 databases. There seem to be only problem with MS SQL 2000 from within VB.NET. Anybody has any idea? I'd appreciate any response. Thanks

I have TDE backup one serverA but There is no backup of certificates or keys from Server A. And no one knows the password used to create those backups. How do you restore the database XYZ at that time on Server B?
View 9 Replies View RelatedLooking at the documentation, it would suggest that as well as data files, when a backup file's created it will also be zeroed out unless the service a/c's been given Perform Volume Maintenance.
We take our backups to dedicated backup servers, meaning backup performance should improve significantly if instant file initialization's given to the Service account logins for the source boxes if I'm right.
1. Created a database with a couple of tables with no data.
2. Taken a full database backup - db.bak.
3. Deleted the database.
4. Restored the database db.bak and filled the tables with some data.
5. Taken log backup - dblog.trn
BACKUP LOG <dbname> to DISK='D:Demodblog.trn' WITH NO_TRUNCATE, INIT
6. Dropped the database again.
7. Restored the database again from db.bak.
8. But when I am trying to restore log file dblog.trn on this database, i keep getting this error :
The log or differential backup cannot be restored because no files are ready to rollforward.
Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 RESTORE LOG is terminating abnormally.
I have a DB, MDF is about 170GB, log 200GB. When I do a restore of it, the backup takes about 20 minutes to get to 100% but then it just stays there in Restoring Mode.
I have specified the WITH RECOVERY option.
What is happening that it doesn't commit the backup for some reason?
I'm working on a project where I need to build a small database and then copy it to a server at the client's site. I can't connect directly, so I have to use a VPN connection and use Remote Desktop, copy the database backup from my machine to the cloud, then download it to the client machine. The project is still in the early stages, and the client is still sending me data in CSV files and Excel spreadsheets. I'm periodically needing to do a complete refresh of the database at the client. I've hacked my way through it a couple of times, but I need to know the proper way to do it. I get errors on the restore step, telling me the file is in use.

We have 5 databases which will sum up to 8+TB, housed in our EDW server. We are planning to migrate to another storage system for better performance.
I am planning Full backup and Differential backup and detach the DB and restore the DB in the new storage system.
Or should I detach, copy the data and log file and attach the files, will this approach have any advantages ?
I have 2 servers in a SQL Server Fail-Over Cluster. IOW I use always-on availability groups. I run backups - full, diff and log - regularly via SQL Agent on one server only depending on which is primary. If there is a fail-over, then backups will continue on the other server. If I have to restore a database in an availability group I probably would need some combination of full, diff, and log backups from each server. Would that actually work? I test the backups weekly however I just realized that I never tested that scenario.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWe have a bunch of SQL 2012 databases which use SQl Server authentication (essentially local dev instances). Is it possible to take a backup of one of these database and then push them onto a (central) server which uses Integrated security (based on active directory authentication) using a script to change and map the authentication model in the process?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've an emergency requirement to copy Source server database backup files to destination Server through xcopy command. Backup job on source server runs daily, so once this job get completes all databases backups needs to be moved to destination server. But here the main concern is "the backup files on destination server shouldn't be overwritten, they should be placed separately as Source server job runs daily".
We've a command which overwrites backups on destination server. But we need to keep backups on destination at-least for 4 weeks (means : retention should be 4 Weeks).

I have a situation from where I need to loop through different folders and files in these folders. After processing these files, I need to archive these folders to different location.
e.g., C:MainFolderMar01 ==> Multiple files in Mar01 folder
C:MainFolderMar02 ==> Multiple files in Mar02 folder
Does any one know the best way to do this in SSIS?
Thanks in advance.

I'm working on a newly installed windows 2012 R2 server which has SQL Server 2012 and SSMS installed on it. What has been odd is that when I open the "restore database" dialog, in the "Select Backup Devices", "Locate Backup File" dialog, only the immediate folders off of the root of the E: drive are visible. E: is where sql server data and backup files are stored.
The account I am logged in with is supposed to have Enterprise Admin rights. How is can I not see these folders and files? The files are certainly there and are visible to me on that login with windows explorer. I am able to backup via SSMS without issue.
When I look at the folder's permissions everything seems normal. If I add "Everyone" to that folder's permissions the folders and files become visible. The SQL Server service is running on the NT ServiceMSSQLSERVER account, which is normal for my other installations of sql server.
If I run the below command, it clean up the files inside the folders but unable to clean up the folder and sub-folders older than 30 days. xp_ cmd shell ' forfiles -p "D:abcd" -s -m *.* -d -30 -c "cmd /c del /Q @path"'

Hi,I have(had) an old Win2k Server server with about 30 web site databases(SQL 2000) that just went under due to hardware problems. Thankfully, Ihave backups of all the databases plus the MDF and LDF files from thehard drive.I want to move all of these sites and their data to a newer server(Win2003) running SQL2000.What's the best way to copy the database from the old server hard drive(now mounted as an extrnal drive to a local machine; I'm currentlyFTPing all of the web site directories from it to the new server)?Just upload the original data to the new server and then mount the MDFand LDF files within the new SQL server? Or do I restore the backupfiles in the new SQL2000?All of my previous data migrations have been DTS operations from onelive server to another, so no experience with either of the abovescenarios. I'll certainly have a lot more experience at one of them bythe time this weekend is through. Thanks for any help you can offer.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHi,
Is there a preferred backup order for backing up data and log files?
Which is preferable to backup first?
Thank you,

Is there an equivelant to the SQL Server Agent in SQL server express edition? If not, how can I schedule the backup of the data/log files?
Thanks,
I am trying to create sql code that restores a backup of a master database to a new database on the same server. It “seems” to run correctly as no errors are produced. However, the most recent updates to the master database are not present in the new databases. All databases are using the Full recovery model. What is really strange is that if I do (what I think is) the same function in Enterprise Administrator, the restore works fine! For both methods I used the same backup file!
Any and all help is sincerely appreciated.
The master databases from which the backups are made start with “MODTRNMaster”
The databases which are created from the restores start with “M1_” and “M2_”. (We call them training room databases.)
My script for backing up the master databases:
-- Backup the master training database
backup database MODTRNMaster
to disk = 'f:kupMODTRNMaster.bak'
backup database MODTRNMaster_IMG
to disk = 'f:kupMODTRNMaster_IMG.bak'
backup database MODTRNMaster_MNC
to disk = 'f:kupMODTRNMaster_MNC.bak'
backup database MODTRNMaster_VM
to disk = 'f:kupMODTRNMaster_VM.bak'
go
This is the restore script for restoring the first training room databases. I’m hoping that there is just something simple that I’m overlooking in these restore statements! J
-- Restore the backup of the master training database into the
-- training room #1 database.
use master
go
drop database M1_MSLH
go
restore database M1_MSLH
from disk = 'f:kupMODTRNMaster.bak'
with move 'DEV5_Data' to 'f:mssqldataM1_MLSH.mdf',
move 'MM' to 'f:mssqldataM1_MLSH_1.mdf',
move 'AMB' to 'f:mssqldataM1_MLSH_2.mdf',
move 'DM' to 'f:mssqldataM1_MLSH_3.mdf',
move 'IMM' to 'f:mssqldataM1_MLSH_4.mdf',
move 'ED' to 'f:mssqldataM1_MLSH_5.mdf',
move 'DEV5_Log' to 'f:mssqllogM1_MLSH_log.ldf',
recovery
go
Thanks in advance

I'm using sp_OACreate in a scalar function to create a folder if it doesn't exist, and it works fine if you're asking it to create a single folder. For instance: C:Newfolder
It creates "Newfolder"
However, if I try to ask it to create C:NewfolderNewsubfolder
It doesn't work
Here's the code:
DECLARE @Exists int, @ObjFile int, @ObjFileSystem int, @Folder nvarchar(500) = 'C:',
@Action tinyint = 1 --(0 to check if folder exists, 1 to actually create it)
EXEC dbo.sp_OACreate 'Scripting.FileSystemObject', @ObjFileSystem OUT
EXEC dbo.sp_OAMethod @ObjFileSystem, 'FolderExists', @Exists OUT, @Folder
