String Match Number Of Different Columns

Apr 24, 2008

Hi,

In short:
I want my following problem to work with a LIKE instead of exact match and if possible be faster. (currently 4s)

Problem:
I got a set of rows with varchar(50), spread out over multiple tables.
All those tables relate to a central Colour table.
For each of the columns, I want to match the values with a set of strings I insert and then return a set of Colour.Id

E.g: input: 'BLACK', 'MERCEDES', '1984'
Would return colour ids "025864", 45987632", "65489" and "63249"
Because they have a colour name containing 'BLACK' or are on a car from 'MERCEDES' or are used in '1984'.

Current Situation:
I) Create a table containing all possible values
CREATE TABLE dbo.CommonSearch(
id int IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL,
clr_id int,
keyWord varchar(40),
fieldType varchar(25)
And fill it with all the values (671694 rows)
)
II) Stored Procedure to cut a string up into a table:
CREATE FUNCTION dbo.SplitString
(
@param varchar(50),
@splitChar char = ''
)
RETURNS
@T TABLE (keyWord varchar(50))
AS
BEGIN
WHILE LEN( @param ) > 0 BEGIN
declare @val varchar(50)
IF CHARINDEX( @splitChar, @param ) > 0
SELECT @val = LEFT( @param, CHARINDEX( @splitChar, @param ) - 1 ) ,
@param = RIGHT( @param, LEN( @param ) - CHARINDEX( @splitChar, @param ) )
ELSE
SELECT @val = @param, @param = SPACE(0)
INSERT INTO @T values (@val)
END
RETURN
END
III)Stored Procedure to query the first table with the second one
CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[GetCommonSearchResultForTabDelimitedStrings]
@keyWords varchar(255) = ''
AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON;
select clr_id, keyWord, fieldType
from dbo.commonSearch
where keyWord in (select * from splitString(@keyWords, ''))
END

So, how can I use a LIKE statement in the IN statement of the last query.
Furthermore, I was wondering if this is the best sollution to go for.
Are there any better methods? Got any tuning tips to squeeze out an extra second?

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Aliases In OPENQUERY - Get Selected Columns By Their Ordering Number

Apr 9, 2014

I have the following query

SELECT [KPI].*
FROM
OPENQUERY(LINKED_OLAP,'SELECT
HEAD(TAIL(DESCENDANTS
(TAIL([Time].[CalendarMonth].[Year],1), [Time].[CalendarMonth].[Month]),4),3) ON COLUMNS,
([Game].[Game Code].&[1] ,

[Code] ...

The last three columns are dynamically generated because they change during time. Next month they will be different.

I like to introduce aliases for them and to have them in the select as 'TWO_MONTHS_AGO','ONE_MONTH_AGO', 'CURRENT_MONTH'

I wonder if exists something like [KPI].(0), [KPI].(1), and etc.. of the OPENQUERY to get the selected columns by their ordering number...

Using Declared Variables In SQL INSERT Statement.

I am new to scripting in general and I've run into an issue when attempting to write a VB variable to a database table in SQL Express.  I am trying to record the value of the variable to the db, but it does not appear that the value is being passed to SQL.  If I hard code the values in the SQL statement it works fine.  Can someone explain what I'm doing wrong accomplish this?  My code is below.  Thanks in advance.

Trouble Porting A Trivially Simple Function - With Declared Variables

Aug 4, 2006

Here is one such function:CREATE FUNCTION my_max_market_date () RETURNS datetimeBEGINDECLARE @mmmd AS datetime;SELECT max(h_market_date) INTO @mmmd FROM holdings_tmp;RETURN @mmmd;ENDOne change I had to make, relative to what I had working in MySQL, wasto insert 'AS' between my variable and its type. Without 'AS', MS SQLinsisted in telling me that datetime is not valid for a cursor; and Iam not using a cursor here. The purpose of this function is tosimplify a number of SQL statements that depend on obtaining the mostrecent datetime value in column h_market_date in the holdings_tmptable.The present problem is that MS SQL doesn't seem to want to allow me toplace that value in my variable '@mmmd'. I could do this easily inMySQL. Why is MS SQL giving me grief over something that should be sosimple. I have not yet found anything in the documentation for SELECTthat could explain what's wrong here. :-(Any ideas?ThanksTed

SQL 2012 :: Crosstab With Varying Number Of Columns

SQL 2012 :: Allow For User Provided Number Of Columns In Select Statement

Aug 20, 2014

I am currently trying to write a query that pulls a summation of item specific data from sales orders. For simplicity's sake, the column structure can be something like the following...

Item#,
PoundsDuringWeekNumber (this would be the current week number out of the 52 weeks in a year and the pounds of the item during that week)

However, those are not going to be the only 2 columns. The idea of the query is that the user would be able to provide the query a date range (say 2 months) and the columns would then morph into the following...

Item#,
PoundsDuringWeekNumber (current),
PoundsDuringWeekNumber(current - 1),
PoundsDuringWeekNumber (current - 2),
etc. etc.
PoundsDuringWeekNumber(current - 8)

Initial ideas where to create a function to execute the summation of the pounds during the date range of the week in question and execute it across the columns, but with the indeterminable number of columns, the query would not know how many times to execute the function.

Get Shopping List Based On Selected Recipes

Nov 19, 2007

Dear all,
I am trying to create a recipe database and one of the funtions is to generate shopping list based on the selected recipes.

at the moment, I have a table --recipe, a table--ingredient, and a cross
over table between these two, reIng.
Does anyone know how can I write a procedure with cursor that no matter how
many recipes the user selected, a list of ingredients will be created based
on that? Another things I can't solve is if an ingredient appears twice, how can I make them sum together..

I can write a simple procedure with one parameter so that I can get the ingredients for a certain recipe.( the parameter is the recipeID ). But I get struck when the possibility is that user will select more than one recipe and
wish to get a list of the ingredients. should I use a cursor to do that? Or I should create a temporary table to store the selected recipe?

THanks for your help!

How To Return Number Of Selected Rows From All Queries Performed On DB

Feb 20, 2013

Recently I had an application developer approach me and asked if I could provided him with a list of sprocs by returned row count. We had an issue where the application passed in a number of parameters which attempted to return 200k plus rows of data and the application was timing out. He changed the required parameters in the application and a reasonable number of rows were returned as expected. Short term solution to this one problem.

However there are always timeout issues with this particular application and we got to thinking that maybe other sprocs that were called using parameters would also fail at some point in time because too much data was being returned.

SELECT DISTINCT - But Just One Of The Selected Columns

Sep 22, 2005

Hi,

I have a table with 3 columns - userID, score, dateCompleted

From this table I wish to select the highest score for each userID and the date for that score. If there is more than one row with the same userID and score (i.e. the user got the same score twice), I want to select the earliest date.

To clarify, there are multiple rows which have the same userID, and may have the same score too, but I want to pull out just 1 score for each userID.

I could do this quite easily if the DISTINCT operator worked on a per column basis, but it works on the entire row instead. Is there a way to SELECT DISTINCT column, but still output other columns in those rows?

I hope this is clear, but please let me know if I've confused you.
