SQL 2012 :: Reestablish Mirroring After DR Test
Jan 27, 2015
After breaking the mirroring database to allow testing on the DR site, is the only way to re-establish the mirroring again to copy the backups from the actual production site ?. Can something be done on the DR site to put back the mirroring after the test ?.

I've got an availability group with multiple databases, replicating to multiple secondary servers. On one of the secondary servers, some of the databases are not synchronising, and when we try re-establish the sync we get an LSN error. I can't see any obvious way to re-establish only one database on one secondary without affecting all databases on that secondary or affecting that database on all secondary nodes.
The options I seem to have are to either remove the database and then re-add it, in which case this affects all secondary replicas, or to remove the secondary replica and add it, in which case all the DBs are added.

I am try to put together options in regard to creating a test environment for our Dynamics NAV system. The environment will be mainly used to test new releases / changes ahead of applying them to production. The 2 options I am considering are…
1.Create a second Test instance on our Production SQL Server to host a test database
2.Purchase a set of SQL developer licences and having a totally separate server for our test environment.
My preference would be option 2. However I need to build a convincing case that this is the best way forward. I wondered if I could tap into the thoughts of the SQL Central community and see how other approach this.

My goal is to be able to include test information in the change request that will make the operations manager confident that the change can proceed. Right now all I can think of is to add the index in dev and staging and compare some before and after stats. But I am concerned that an index change might also affect other operations besides SELECTs - such as updates, transactions, or scheduled jobs.

I am attempting to create a Test db from a full backup of the production db. With 2012, I cannot do it the the way i had done it in previous versions (and now i understand why because of Logical names).
The Test db runs in the same instance as Prod db.
I attempted to run this but come up with errors. This is what i executed:
RESTORE DATABASE TEST FROM DISK = 'E:<path>FULL.BAK'
WITH REPLACE, RECOVERY,
MOVE 'PROD' TO 'E:<path>TEST.MDF';
The errors are all cannot execute due to PROD is in use.

Setting up Transaction Replication in test environment. I am willing to bet that most of you take a production backup (if so, how, and using what?), restoring the database to your test environment, then running a snapshot to your subscriber and away you go.
But perhaps you take a backup of your publisher and subscriber, if so, how do you know there are no inconsistences because there were transactions sitting on the distributor?
What do you do if you have additional indexes on the subscriber for reporting, that are not on the publisher?
Here at work we are having issues with getting consistent databases set up with T Rep, missing rows, duplicate keys at subscriber etc. How to avoid these issues.

I am creating my first SSIS package, simple, I read a file, a computation and then write it to an excel.
I am getting the message: "Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider." The database is NOT remote. My computer is slow though. after about 10 or 15 seconds after clicking the button to test my connection, I get the message and much more. The message asks me if the instance name is correct. I don't know what this would be. This message is on the first task, reading the file (finding the file).
The last sentence of the long message is: "Named pipes provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server (2).
My question is: Why am I getting this message and what do I need to do to resolve this problem?

I created a mirrored DB, added a new datafile to the principal using a path the mirror can't access. As a result the mirroring session was suspended because the mirror stated: "CREATE FILE encountered operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.) while attempting to open or create the physical file".
Fine, so I disabled mirroring on the principal (SET PARTNER OFF) which worked just fine, but the mirror stayed in a mirrored state, Object Explorer saying:"(Mirror, Disconnected / In Recovery). Sooo, I tried to disable db mirroring on the mirror using ALTER DATABASE db SET PARTNER OFF;, which completed successfully, but the DB STILL remained in a mirrored-configuration.
I tried ALTER DATABASE db SET PARTNER FORCE_SERVICE_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS which resulted in
"Msg 1404, Level 16, State 4, Line 1
The command failed because the database mirror is busy. Reissue the command later."
I tried taking the DB offline or restoring it from a backup, but all these operations resulted in "The operation cannot be performed on database "db" because it is involved in a database mirroring session or an availability group."
The only solution I can think of at the moment is shutting down the instance and deleting the data and log-files of the mirrored db, which would be just fine because this is just a test installation, but it would be not quite as easy in a productive environment.
Is there any other way to remove the mirrored state from a disconnected mirror or to simply get rid of the db entirely to perform a recovery?

I am setting up mirroring on one of our live databases tonight. The database is quite big, around 300GB.
At the moment we are doing log backups once a day and full backups every night.
My question is, when I set up the mirror, will the log backups on my Principle DB affect the mirror in anyway?

I am trying to configure database mirroring with sql server 2012.
My principal instance and my mirror instance are on different server.
Both SQL Server service run with NT SERVICEMSSQLSERVER.
Now when I am configuring database mirroring, which service account should I use ? database account or server account ?
Instead of using domain account, can I :
1- create local account on my two server
2- Add these 2 logins in my 2 instances.
3- use these local account for configuring database mirroring.

I have the following mirroing setup for DR.
Prinical(ServerA) and Mirror(ServerB)
When we do a DR test we do manual failover from Principal(ServerA) to Mirror(ServerB)
Now
ServerB is Prinicpal
ServerA is Mirror
Applications do their testing against the new principal which is ServerB but dont want to take those changes or sync to ServerA(Mirror).
Is there any way to do this without breaking the mirror?
Finally It will go back to original setup after the test which Server A is Principal and Server B will be its mirror.

I am trying to send out notifications when jobs complete (fail or succeed). I have database mail working fine on my DEV server, but I am having issues with it on my PROD server. I am currently having people look into if McAfee may be blocking it.
I am able to send out a test email from SSMS>Management>Database Mail, but when I set a Notification for a job, the job will complete and in the history, it will say "NOTE: Failed to notify 'User' via email."
I have created an Operator and set up Profiles and Accounts, just as I did on my DEV server.

I'm setting up AG replication over our WAN (1GB MPLS). Using sql stress, AG replication quickly falls behind. Network throughput plateaus at ~14Mbs.
The problem ISN'T NETWORK
using conventional mirroring, the same workload never falls behind, throughput plateaus at ~26Mbs.
it's almost like log stream compression isn't happening for AG...
both mirroring and AG are using async.

As the title suggests we are looking to change the service account of a SQL mirror implementation. I will be using the same account on all 3 servers involved in the configuration.
I know each server requires the account of the other two adding but as this will be the same account I assume this doesn't apply?
Also for mirrored databases already set up would I need to reconfigure the security for each one?
Is there anything I am missing?

I have a closed polygon that coincidently is in the shape of Iowa :) I have a point that is within the state and a point WELL outside it, but I get weird results that I don't expect when I try to get it to tell me that the point is within the polygon. Here is some basic code, with long coordinates data.
DECLARE @g geography,
@pIn geography,
@pOut geography
SET @g = geography::STPolyFromText('POLYGON((-91.119987 40.705402, -91.129158 40.682148, -91.162498 40.656311, -91.214912 40.643818, -91.262062 40.639545, -91.375610 40.603439, -91.411118 40.572971, -91.412872 40.547993, -91.382103 40.528496, -91.374794 40.503654, -91.385399 40.447250, -91.372757 40.402988, -91.385757 40.392361, -91.418816 40.386875, -91.448593 40.371902, -91.476883 40.390968, -91.490158 40.390762, -91.500221
[code]...
(1 row(s) affected)As I read that there is a distance of about 7864 meters, this is close to what I would expect, so that's ok. The point outside I would expect a distance as well so that is confusing.. Then we have the intersects, it says that the point inside does NOT intersect but the one outside DOES, this is backed up by the intersection values.

I was told that if I wanted to setup mirroring between multiple instance on the same server that each endpoint had to be different number. Is that true? Or can I use the default 5022 for each instance?
Ex.
Server1Instance1
Use endpoint 5022
Server1Instance2
Use endpoint 5022
VS
Server1Instance1
Use endpoint 5022
Server1Instance2
Use endpoint 5023

We currently use Zabbix to monitor our SQL Servers, generally we use Perf_Counters to gather performance information (CPU Usage, Memory, Blocked process etc.), Zabbix also lets us monitor services as to whether they are up or down. I have searched google looking for any information regarding the monitoring of AlwaysOn/Mirroring within Zabbix and to date ave found nothing. What I am looking to alert on is an indication that Mirroring has stopped/ been interrupted with say something like "Not Synchronized"... Zabbix and monitoring SQL Server 2012 and specifically monitoring AlwaysOn...

We are setting up a test lab environment with 100 machines. We want one master testing db that gets replicated to each to run scripted application tests nightly.
My goal is to minimize the amount of work to move this thing to each of the 100 test machines. I am wondering if we need to even have the sql local and invest in a monster db server with 100 copies of the db we restore and each test machine point to their own db on that server, or if I should use db mirroring or something to get the master test db to each of those machines instead.

I've read here at [URL] that with 32 bit it's recommended to only have 10 database mirrors per instance. However, is there a limit for 64 bit SQL Server 2012?
We're having a problem where we have about 300+ databases and now any new db's we add are timing out when it comes to setting up mirroring and am wondering if this is limited by the instance.

Now that we have a good programming model in SSIS - the question is whether to write automated unit tests for your packages, and would it generally be a good idea for packages?
Also - if yes to write tests - then where to find more informations regarding How to accomplish that?

hi every one,
i need to test SSIS pacakge which will import data from different database where record count is around 5 millions.
iam planning to test it through c# code as well as manually also.
SSIS source : consist of 7 tables
SSIS destination :consist of 7 tables
Using c# code iam trying to run ssis package through batch file.
i am putting expected rowcount, column count in an excel file and comparing same with destination tables by writing query implementing ADO.Net concept.
am i going right way ,can any one suggest best and productive way to test the ssis package .
what are the other things i need to test it.
do any one can add test cases to it.
S.No
Test Case
1
Verify all the tables have been imported.
2
Verify all the rows in each table have been imported.
3
Verify all the columns specified in source query for each table have been imported
4
Verify all the data has been received without any truncation for each column.
5
Verify the schema at source and destination
6
Verify the time taken /speed for data transfer
7
Fields truncated due to difference in length of the field at destination.

Using SQL Server 2008, we would like propose mirroring between two servers of a critical database. Since we initiate, may require to clarify on its purpose and also required changes from application end.Any changes required from OS Level? (I believe both servers IP or Host name should be added in host entries. Mirroring ports should be allowed/open including Principal and mirror server IP Addresses): Windows Team.Any changes required from Application? (Instance name, authentication: user name and its password should be added in web config files): Application Team.Any changes required from Network Team? Also for mirroring both the principal and mirror servers should be with same version, does it only mean SQL Server 2008 versions are enough or does it also mean to say build numbers 10.00.4000 should also be same.URL....
