Feb 27, 2015I have a SQL Server 2008 R2 Cluster. I have moved a file to another drive by adding a new file on the drive, doing a shrinkfile with emptyfile. I have removed the old file and when I try to rename the new file to the old files old name, I get an error.
ALTER DATABASE mydb REMOVE FILE myfilename
Msg 5009, Level 16, State 9, Line 1
One or more files listed in the statement could not be found or could not be initialized.
ALTER DATABASE mydb
modify FILE ( NAME = temp_filename
, NEWNAME = myfilename
)
Msg 1828, Level 16, State 3, Line 4
The logical file name "myfilename" is already in use. Choose a different name.
I have completed a failover, thinking the name was being held in cache. I've also renamed to something completely different then tried to rename to the old filename.

In my instance, database already exists say A.
I have to restore DB B with the same backup used for database A in the same instance.
So, once the database B is restored, A and B will have same logical fileNames.
Can I leave it as is? Or do i alter only after B is restored?
Or is there a way where I can change the logical file for B while restoring?

Mar 9, 2000Is there a way to rename the logical file for a database. For example, if I am moving a development database into production, I can use backup - but the backup takes the logical file names of the database and puts it into my production server. Now I have a production database with "dev_data1" for a logical file.....Can I change that name....?

Database Restore - Logical Filename

I am facing problem with Logical File Name while restoring database. I am taking a backup of ABC database from Server1 in abc.bak file.
Then I am creating new database XYZ on Server2. Server1 and Server2 are not connected to each other in anyway, since both servers belong to different companies. Here on Server2 I want to restore backup of abc.bak on XYZ database. I select restore from Device, and on option tab I am selecting Force restore over existing database, in the below option I am specifying current Data & log file path for Move to physical file name.
But Logical file name shows ABC names, but if I tried to change those to XYZ names then restore fails. But if I keep ABC names then it works.
Is anybody knows how to over come this Logical Name issue?

Mar 14, 2003I'm moving a database (XYZtest) from the test server to the production server via sp_detach/sp_attach. I want the logical file names to be XYZ_data, rather than XYZtest_data, etc. I can easily rename the disk files, but how do I rename the logical file names?

I'm not talkingspecifically about the physical files, because those can be changedduring a restore, but the values immediately to the left of those inEnterprise Manager such as DBName_Data and DBName_log. EnterpriseManager lets me change them during a restore, but when I do it gives anerror. Any ideas?

Apr 30, 2015Is there any danger with renaming the LOGICAL file names behind the database?
There are a bunch of databases that were restored copies and all of them have the same logical database file name. I'm trying to get some growth data so I want the logical files to be different (prefer them to match the actual database name) so I can more easily identify them.
For instance:
database_id name type_desc name physical_name
1 DLMdb1 ROWS DLMDB1 D:dlmdb1.mdf
1 DLMdb1 LOG DLMDB1_log E:dlmdb1.ldf
2 DLMdb2 ROWS DLMDB1 D:dlmdb2.mdf

Am I safe to rename the logical names? I can't think of anything that references those logical file names that I would be breaking [backups, applications].

TableA = 600million records
TableB = 0 records
To "move" data from TableA to TableB
Rename TableA --> TableA_HOLD
Rename TableB --> TableA
Rename TableA_HOLD --> TableB
The problem with this is that after every rename, permission to the TableB is lost so we have to execute a statement to grant permission back to TableB after the process is complete.
My question is why is this necessary? Is the permission tied to the table in such a way that it can't use the name only?

May 19, 2015I am loading files with same format from two different locations in to one database. First, my SSIS connects to location 1.
Lets Say
Location1 : C:LoadFilesImport
Location2 : D:LoadFilesImport
Location one has three different set files starting with
First Set: AP_1, AP_2,AP_3,
Second Set: VD_1, VD_2, VD_3,
Third Set: BK_1,BK_2,BK_3,
This SSIS set to run every 3 hours, if it finds files of any set load them. While loading it has to insert into a derivedcolumn called CustID. If the file name Starts with AP_ , custiD values should be as 101
AP_1 goes to Table1
AP_2 goes to Table2
AP_3 goes to Table3
If the file name Starts with VD_ , custiD values should be as 201
If the file name Starts with BK_ , custiD values should be as 301
after processing all these files in first location, the SSIS looks for files in second location and does the same?

Renaming Database Or Files
May 17, 2006Hi all, I have a dev database on a dev machine that is the same name as a database on a production server.
I would like to attach the dev database to the production server but I can't because there would be two database with the same name. I tried just renaming my dev .mdf to another name but that doesn't work., I think I need to rename the database files but I don't know how.
Can anyone tell me the solution to this problem?

Renaming Database After Log Shipping.
Jun 30, 2007In order to move from one data center to another, I am planning to use log shipping.
Lets say,
Current Data center - DC1
Current Server- S1
Current Database- DB1
New Data Center -DC2
New Server -S2
Now, on the New Server S2, I already restored DB1 as DB1 for QA testing. QA has to do some testing before we move from DC1 to DC2. In the mean time, I need to start log shipping from S1 to S2, so that we can fail-over to S2. Now since DB1 database is already present on S2, I can not use the same name. I will have to use some other name (say DB1_New).
I can not wait for QA to finish their testing. I have to start log shipping before that. When QA is done, I will delete the DB1.
So for this log shipping, -
Primary - S1- DB1
Secondary - S2 DB1_New
So when we fail-over, we will have the database name as DB1_New. But all the apps use the name DB1. So I will have to rename the database as DB1.
So want to know, will this renaming the database (DB1_New to DB1) cause any issues?
Anyone had similar experience?

I am trying to write the filenames to an SQL database that I have built, but I keep getting this error: Compiler Error Message: BC30201: Expression expected. Create Database On Map Network Logical Drive
Oct 13, 2000In 6.5 , I was NOT able to use mapped network drive for new database
device if the MSSQLSERVER service is running under local system account,
but if I changed it to using a domain a/c which has the authority to
create files on mapped drive, I was able to do it.
But if I tried it in 7.0, it never work and got msg:
Server: Msg 5105, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Device activation error. The physical file name 'e:est2.mdf' may be
incorrect.
Server: Msg 1802, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check
previous errors.
Is it something that's normal for 6.5 and 7.0 ????
i.e. we can only create databases on LOCAL drives ?
I am just thinking of in case we run of space locally, we can temporarily
make use of remote mapped network drive. (say at time of upgrading)
Any one has this experience ?

Scenario Configuration : VB.net 2005 Code, WebService for Executing SSIS on Server, SSIS deployed on the Database Server
Problem Description : We are developing windows applicaiton in which we call webservice which was deployed on the same server where SSIS packages are deployed.
Now from Code we are passing FilePath name in variable and execute the Package. But the SSis result says that
The file name "\computernamefol1fol2fol3fol4abc.txt" specified in the connection was not valid.
More Information:
1. Full Permission are given on this network folder.
2. Package executes successfully from SSIS development solution (BIS solution)
3. Deployed packed executes successfully from the Database Server.
4. From Development pc packege executes successfully.
5. Other packages deployed on the same server executed suucessfully with same configuration and scenario.
Only this package is not executing.
-- the only differece with this package with other is -
using ".txt" extension in Flat file connection and using VB Script task
Can any one suggest the appropirate solution for this problem...

FILENAME Option In CREATE DATABASE Statement

I have a problem with CREATE DATABASE statement, since it needs to specify the absolut path for a file in the FILENAME= option. I would need instead a relative path, i.e. only the name of the file because the script that launch this SQL command is dependant on the installation path decided by the user, during the installation.
Is there a way to pass to the FILENAME only the name of the file?

I am using sys.dm_exec_query_stats summing the Physical and Logical Reads. Is this a viable option for gathering this metric? Is this a viable metric to gather?

Aug 13, 2015In our production we have a database by name MyDb.The application team wanted another database by the name MyDbOld which contains the data of Mydb 1 month old. So I created a database MyDbOld in other instance(test) and restored MyDbOld from the one month backup of MyDb in production server. In test instance I backed MyDbOld as MyDbOld.bak...
In the production instance I created a new DB by the name MyDbOld and restored the MyDbOld in the production from the backup of MyDbold.bak in the test instance. Now I have 2 databases in the production instance ie MyDb and 2)MyDbOld. However I find the logical names of both the databases to be the same although the database name and the physical file name to be different.My questions are-:
1) Does it in any manner affect the integrity of the 2 databases if the 2 databases are in the same instance and have the same logical name?
2) Would the dml or data retrieval operations in the 2 databases have any conflict in any manner what so ever?
3) Having a unique database name, and unique file names for the physical files for any database in an instance what is the purpose and significance of additionally having a logical name for a database?
4) Which I could restore a database from the backup of another database in the same instance and at the same time change the logical and physical name of the files to correspond to the new database.

Apr 20, 2006I am using VB with Visual Studio Express. I am new to these tools. I have SQL Server 2005 Express installed on my machine. I think that I have the right version. I am just using Express for taking classes and teaching myself on my machine.
When I follow the examples in the book, I keep getting this error when I go to my ASP.NET configuration and click on the security tab to add myself as a user.
"There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store. The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: The database filename can not contain the following 3 characters: [ (open square brace), ] (close square brace) and ' (single quote) " -- end of erro msg.
I have an apostrophe in my last name. Could that be what is causing it? Is it creating a db based on my name or something? Or do I have the wrong version of SQL Server Express installed.

CREATE DATABASE Script Doesn't Accept A Variable For A FILENAME
May 2, 2007I want to create a SP that creates a new database, so I script-ed out the db and paste the script into new SP gui (SQL 2000). I want to pass it a variable for the data/log file location that is not the default location. The original script looks like this:

I replaced the path of the FILENAME variable like this:

Any ideas for workaround?
