Does sql server 2012 support varbinary data type for replication (Merge or transaction)?

And if so, is there a limitation of data size?

SQL Server 2008 :: Size Limitation For XML Data Type?

Oct 7, 2015

I've never worked with the XML data type in SQL Server, although I know its been there for a few iterations of SQL SErver. Now I've got a situation in which it might store some configuration data as XML, since that's the way it comes. (We had thought about storing the data in a VARCHAR(MAX) field.)

The first question is does the XML data type have a size limitation? For example do you do something like:

ConfigFile XML(1000) NULL

Or is it just something like this:

ConfigFile XML NULL

The second question is persisting the data to a file. As the name I choose for the variable suggests, we want to save the data from a configuration file into a SQL Server database. How do we go about doing that? We'll be developing a C# application, it will read and write the data both from the SQL table and the user's local HD.

Data Types Size Question

Mar 25, 2008

Hi all,

little background,
When I need an amount column I usually declare a numeric(9,2). Anything bigger then that ends up taking 9 bytes instead of 5 bytes and for the most part (9,2) is more then enough. Also I usually don't use (5, 2), (6, 2), etc... since they end up taking the same space as a (9,2), that is unless I want to specifically restrict the amount value to something smaller. Occasionally I will use smallmoney for smaller amounts, however I pretty much never use money data type since it's 8 bytes... that is unless I need more digits after the dot...

so enough background, here is the question,
Let's say you've got a numeric(5, 2) and a numeric(9, 2), as far performance goes are the two fields the same? Both columns have a size of 5 bytes so I assume that as far storage and I/O goes there is no performance difference.... Fair assumption?
But what about CPU and other things, are there any performance gain in using a smaller numeric column?

SQL Server 2012 :: Join On Different Data Types

Jun 11, 2014

We have a query that joins column A int which is an int onto column B with contains only int's but was created as a varchar and can't be changed to an int at the moment.

Casting column a as a varchar in the ON of the join to left join seems to void the index altogether and the query just runs for every.

We are talking a few hundred million rows of data in each table.

Temp solution is select into a #Hash table as correct data type and index then use the #Hash table in the join.

7.0 Standard Desktop Database Size Limitation?

Nov 5, 1999

I am running 7.0 standard desktop on Workstation 4.0 and have run into a database size limitation of 10GB. I have all the newest
patches and have found no documentation that refers to a 10GB limitation. A September copy of VBA developer says that this edition
has a limitation of 4GB while the guides say that the Small Business Server edition would have a 10GB limitation. All other forms
of documentation say that there should be the standard mega-terabyte limit. I'm completely confused by this [lack of] documentation.
Any help???

SQL 2012 :: Nested Tables And User Defined Data Types?

Jun 5, 2015

I have a requirement of creating nested tables in SQL server. how to create them. Just to give a background I am trying to move the RDBMS from oracle to SQL server.

Structure of tables is as follows. I have table 'Employees' with address as one of the column. I have one more table with columns Street, Town, Dist, State. When I query the table 'Employees' I should see the attribute name and values of all the columns in address table in address column.

Employees: with columns: ID, FirstName, LastName, dept, gender, dob, address

Address (Nested table): with columns : Street, Town, Dist, State

This was done in oracle using Nested tables and user defined data types. what is alternative for this in SQL server. How can I achive this requirement in SQL server.

One Or More Columns Do Not Have Supported Data Types, Or Their Data Types Do Not Match.

Oct 20, 2007

Hi,

I´m exporting an ms-excel file, then I use a lookup transformation to get a field from a SQL Server 2005 table. The Lookup transformation editor, after selecting the table, shows a warning that says:

at least one mapping between a column from available input columns ans a column from available lookup columns must be defined on the columns page.

So I try to make a relationship in the Lookup transformation editor's column tab where I find the Available input columns and the available lookup columns but I get the following error:

The following columns cannot be mapped:
[Department, DEP_CLEGALCODE]
One or more columns do not have supported data types, or their data types do not match.

The field in SLQ Server is varchar(10) and the input field is a derived column transformation; I have tried different Data Types but I always have the same error.

The DataFlow is: ExcelSource --> Derived Column --> Lookup --> Flat file destination

thanks.

SQL 2012 :: (SSIS) - Cannot Convert Between Unicode And Non-unicode Data Types

Sep 9, 2015

I have an SSIS package that pulls data from a MYSQL DB (Using RSSBus for Salesforce in SSIS to accomplish this). Most of the columns are loading properly, but I have many columns that I need to convert.

I have been using the Data Conversion dataflow task in SSIS to convert the rows.

I have 2 data conversions that work on most of the columns, but the DESCRIPTION column continues to return an error saying "Cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode types", regardless of what I choose on the Data Conversion task. So, basically I want to dump this column data into a SQL table with NVARCHAR datatypes. Here is what I am doing in my SSIS package...

1) Grab subset of data from SOURCE
2) Converts to TEXTSTREAM. (Data Conversion)
3) Converts to STRING. (Data Conversion)
4) Load Destination table. (OLE DB Destination)

I have also tried to simply convert the values to STRING, but that doesn't work either.

So, I have 2 Data Conversions working here that process most of the data correctly. What I can do to load the DESCRIPTION column?

SQL 2012 :: Check Size Of Database After Implementing Data Compression Across All Tables

Dec 4, 2014

I found it pretty interesting. I checked the size of a database, before implementing database compression across all the user tables in a database. And Post implementation of compression too I checked the size of the database.

I did not find any difference. But if I expand the table and check propetires->storage and I can see that PAGE compression is implemented across all the tables, but no compaction in the size of the db. It still remains the same.

Size Limit On CLR Extension User Defined Types

Jun 10, 2006

Why is there a limit of 8000 bytes on CLR Extension user defined types in SQl Server 2005?

We now have varchar(max), varbinary(max) and XML data types that are unlimited in size, byt UDT's are limited to 8000 bytes!.

This limitation is ruining a key project of mine!

Any ideas that MS may lift this limit?

SqlCeParameter.Size Limited To 255 Characters For Char Types

Jul 10, 2007

SqlCeParameter.Size seems to be limited to 255 characters for char types.

Eg.

SqlCeParameter param = new SqlCeParameter();

param.ParameterName = parameter_name;

param.DbType = DbType.String;

param.Size = 260;

Now check the value of param.Size, it will be 255.

In the past this problem was avoidable by setting the size to 0. However, this cause a problem if you are re-using the same command and simply changing the parameters value.

Somewhere the system remembers the length of the first value and adjusts the max size to be limited to this length.

Thus for the following values:

"Test"

"Testing"

The second one will error with something like "@param: String truncation: max = 4, len = 7, value = 'testing' "

Has anyone else come across this problem, or found a solution to it?

this should not happen, old data should remain then only the new data should be inserted.
