SQL 2012 :: Revoke SELECT On All Tables For All Users In A Database

Nov 26, 2014

I am trying to clean up security. When I check tables in a specific database I see a list of users with select access. There are 1000+ tables in the database. I know I can do 'revoke select on table_name to user_name' ....

Schema Revoke SELECT Permission

Sep 15, 2006

HI, I have set up a database with 5 users, USER1 has default schema USER1, USER2 has default schema USER2 and so on. My problem is that I want to revoke select permission on schema USER1 to user USER2. I issued the following TSQL in SSMS:

REVOKE SELECT ON SCHEMA::USER1 to USER2

Even though I did that, I can still log on as USER2 and be able to issue SELECT statements on USER1 schema tables. The only way I can do to avoid the SELECT on USER1 schema is to DENY select on USER1 schema. Is it normal?

Thank you for your help,

Ccote

SQL 2012 :: Revoke Create Schema Permissions Without Removing DDL Permission?

I have a sql server 2012 server and I need to prevent the users from creating new schemas by mistake. Is there any way to revoke that permission alone but still letting the user to create their own objects in dbo (yes I know that shouldn't be in dbo but that is another issue).

SQL 2012 :: Secure Login To Database For Web Users?

Feb 21, 2014

We build up a new website in .net mvc 4.0 on a w2012 server with MSSQL 2012 database. We use windows autentification and normal anonymous access through NT AUTHORITYIUSR who is also a login in the database. But we make extra login possibility for users who are registered and they can insert and modify data in some tables in the database. And I'am afraid of giving NT AUTHORITYIUSR insert and update for some column in tables.I think of set up a new login for the database. Run a new connection string on login and set up special permission for that extra user on the database, and let the user become a member of the ordinary user on the database.

SQL 2012 :: Migrating Database To New Server - Map Login To Users

Mar 10, 2014

I am migrating a database TESTDB from SQL 2008R2 to a new server running SQL Server 2012.

Management has decided the current sql users should have "better" user names. So the login and username "BadUsername" on the old server should be called "GoodUserName". Goodusername should have the same permissions as Badusername.

I have now restored a backup from the old server to the new server.

I used the following script for creating the login:

CREATE LOGIN [GoodUserName] WITH PASSWORD=N'difficultpassword', DEFAULT_DATABASE=[master], DEFAULT_LANGUAGE=[us_english], CHECK_EXPIRATION=OFF, CHECK_POLICY=OFF
GO

Then I run the following script:

ALTER USER Badusername WITH LOGIN = GoodUserName, NAME = GoodUserName

But the results are not what I wanted. I now have two database users: Badusername and GoodUserName. I would have preferred if BadUserName was "replaced" by GoodUserName, but it won't be a problem if I have to delete badusername manually. Worser is that GoodUserName have NOT "inherited" any permissions from Badusername.

Is there an easy way to transfer permissions or do I need to loop through the permissions of badusername and apply those to badusername?

SQL Server 2012 :: Restore Database And Create Users Using Minimal Elevated Privilege

Apr 29, 2015

What I want to do is :

- restore a backup of a 3rd party database onto one of our servers
- this has no users that I can use
- there is some ETL processing so we're using Control-M to manage the process
- create a database user and grant it db_reader.

I'd like to do this without granting any users elevated privileges if possible.

What I've done so far is grant the Control-M user (this is a domain user) dbcreator rights and made it owner of our copy of the database that is being refreshed.

The refresh is completing, but Control-M is not able to log onto the database to create the user.

What is the best way to accomplish this task without granting the control-m user sysadmin rights?

Would I be able to do it if I used a SQL Agent job for the restore and user creation?

For example

Client id, name, user id, comments

Form 2 might have:
Client id, name, user id, address, comments, telephone number

Form 3 might have:
Client id, name, user id, comments, date of birth, email address

Each form can have over 20+ data types which can be all different to other forms. My question is: What is the best way to store all the data into sql server without creating new columns of new data types everytime a new form is created in wufoo.

SQL 2012 :: Replication To A Database With More Tables Than Source

We need to replicate data from a live database to a reporting database nightly.

There is data which is only needed for the reporting function - namely the selection criteria for reports which are to be run nightly or monthly.

Is it possible to have extra tables in the target database, holding the selection criteria?

If not, we'll have the reports running heterogeneous queries between the target database and a separate database with the selection criteria in it.

SQL 2012 :: Select Top 100 - A Record Is Not Returning From Database

Aug 24, 2015

I have a strange situation with an select. I've noticed that when I select top 100, a record is not returning from the database, but when doing top 101 the record appears on position 41.

The query is like this:

select top 100 GroupId, count(HouseId)
from House h
group by h.GroupId
order by max([DateCreated]) desc

From all discussions about top 100 vs top 101 I've noticed that everybody is saying that top 101 is using another algorithm and we can have a speed problem, but my problem is not about this. With top 100 I'm missing a record that should appear at index 41.

SQL 2012 :: Unable To Export Tables From GIS Application To The Database

Oct 1, 2014

I am using SQL server 2012. An user tried to export tables from GIS application to the SQL database.

After export, and login to the SQL server, we see all the tables has his name as the schema but not dbo.

He was added as a login and user as in a windows group. Meaning he is a member of the windows group.

I assume when export, the default schema should be dbo. but apparently not.
I went to the setting and explicitly make the default schema for the windows group user to dbo. But he tried again, it still use his username as schema prefix to the tables. just wondering why is this?

Effect Of A SELECT Stored Procedure On Tables Or Database

Jul 25, 2007

Hi all,
I have a few stored procedures which all perfom SELECT queries on a table in the database. Do these kind of stored procedures affect any other processes or procedures working on that table. I am talking about locks, blocks etc.
For example, the database has a table which gets updated periodically by some process which I don't know. Now I wrote some stored procedures just to do the SQL SELECT with some conditions in WHERE clause. Is there any possibility that my stored procedure failed and the because of this, the process that runs on the table was not executed?

SQL Server 2012 :: Find Common Link Between Two Tables In Database Without Key Constraints?

Jul 17, 2015

CREATE TABLE [Table 1] (
Id varchar,
TableTwoId varchar,
OtherData varchar )
CREATE TABLE [Table 2] (
Id varchar,
MoreData varchar )

What is the link between these two tables?

I have databases that have zero keys defined, no foreign key constraints, no unique value constraints. I cannot assume that an Identity column is the Id. The end game is be able to output that [Table 1].[TableTwoId] = [Table 2].[Id] but cannot assume that all linkage in the database will be as simple as saying "if the field name contains a table name + Id then it is the Id in that table."

Currently have written a script that will cycle through all columns and start identifying keys in singular tables based on the distinctness of the values in each column (i.e. Column1 is 99% distinct so is the unique value). It will also combine columns if the linkage is the combination of one or more columns from Table 1 = the same number of columns in Table 2. This takes a long time, and it somewhat unreliable as IDENTITY columns may seem to relate to one another when they don't.
