SQL 2012 :: Scheduled Query To Export To Daily XLS File
Jun 17, 2015
I'm using SSMS 2012. I have multiple queries that are run daily(I also have a few that are run every Monday) that I want to schedule to run at midnight and export to a new xls file on the network drive to be used the next morning. Is there something that I can add to each query to accomplish this or would I have to set something else up to call the queries?

I have an existing MS SQL database (2008 R2). I have a very simple SQL script. I need to run this script on a daily basis and save the results as a .csv file.
I've tried creating a job in SQL Manager - that didn't work. Then I found a tutorial that had me use MS Visual Studio... couldn't get that to function either.
what program I should be using, and how to go about creating this as a task / job that can run on a scheduled basis?

I have a job which is scheduled to run once daily. The job is enabled and the schedule is also enabled. After the job runs (successfully), the schedule has its 'Enabled' flag reset (i.e. the 'Enabled' checkbox in the schedule properties has become unchecked) and so is not rescheduled.
I have other jobs configured in a similar way, but they are run and then rescheduled in the normal way without any problems.
What could be going on?

Currently, I have a report that takes two parameters: StartDate and EndDate.
I would like to schedule the report to run on a Daily, Weekly, Monthly or Yearly basis, but this doesn't work too well with StartDate and EndDate because the parameter is static. What is the most elegant way to implement this change?

From SSIS I need to export data to a CSV with spaces padding the end of each field before the delimited value. For example if I have three fields that are Nvarchar(10) I need it to be this:
Testing ,Test123 ,Again {end of line}
instead of this:
Testing,Test123,Again{end of line}
It's like it can do fixed width or delimited but not both. Is this possible without having to force the spaces into the data coming back from SQL? I already have the SSIS package written to export the data to CSV which works great, just need to find some way to add the spaces to the end of each column to satisfy requirements on the system being exported to. Also the commas need to be there too.

Looking for what others have done to keep a copy of a database, for read only, on another instance. Need to do this once a day early in the morning with no, or minimal, downtime at the source and target. We have applications that access this copy 24/7, so prefer not to disconnect active users, as a detach/attach or backup/restore might do. Permissions are different on each instance, so would prefer not to overlay users on destination database. Options we are looking at right now are...
Log Shipping
Snapshot Replication
Transfer SQL Objects Task (SSIS)
Our environment for this is SQL 2012 on Windows 2012, in the same AD domain located in the same server room. The database size is 1gb. Needs to be copied around 6:30am daily. Does not need to be updated thru the day.

For a few days now I have a discussion with a colleague about shrinking the transaction log as a daily maintenance job on an OLTP database. The problem is I cant figure out a way to convince her she is doing something really wrong. Its not the first discussion.. Maintenance Plans.
She implemented this "solution" with a lot of customers as a solution against VLFs fragmentation and huge transaction log sizes. My thoughts about doing this is very clear and I have used the following arguments without success to convince her:
- To solve too many VLFs you have to focus on the actual size of the transaction log and the autogrowth settings in combination with regularly transaction log backups. Check the biggest transaction and modify the transaction log size based on this. Not use shrinking as a solution for solving many VLFs.
- Shrinking the transaction log file on a daily basis that is disk I/O intensive. When the transaction log file is too small for new transactions, the transaction log needs to grow and this will cause disk I/O, this can cause performance problems.
- It looks unprofessional.
These steps are used every morning at 6:00 AM and a transaction log backup is made every 30 minutes.
Step 1
DBCC SHRINKFILE (N'' , 0, TRUNCATEONLY);
go
Step 2
ALTER DATABASE
MODIFY FILE (NAME = N'', SIZE = 4098MB);
GO
My main purpose is making sure the customers have the best possible configuration and I cant accept this is being implemented. Are there any more arguments available for this issue?

I have a code I wrote and I'm required to get Product Name and Quantity with the maximum quantity sold per day. My issue is with the "per day" part, here's my code below.
SELECT
t.SalesOrder
,t.OrderQuantity
,t.OrderTotal
,t.OrderDate
,p.ProductName
FROM Transactions t
INNER JOIN SalesPerson sp
ON t.SalesPersonID = sp.SalesPersonID
INNER JOIN Product p
ON t.ProductID = p.ProductID
WHERE sp.SalesPersonName LIKE 'John%'
Now from this code I need to get only Product Name and Quantity with the maximum quantity sold per day, here's what I tried;
SELECT
SUM(t.OrderQuantity) AS Order_Quantity
,p.ProductName
FROM Transactions t
INNER JOIN Product p
ON t.ProductID = p.ProductID
WHERE sp.SalesPersonName LIKE 'John%'
GROUP BY p.ProductName, t.OrderQuantity
HAVING MAX(t.OrderQuantity)

Ok this may have been answered somewhere but to be honestly I don't even know what I need so its hard for me to search for it. Here is what I have going on lets see if anyone out there can answer this one. I have a 20 year old system that is tied to some lab equipment that we use for coal testing. The equipment runs back to an old win98 PC which is running a DOS program that has long since been abandoned by the manufactures. I can't upgrade the program because it will mean upgrading the hardware which is somewhere in the neighborhood of $100k at least. The program saves everything in what I believe is a dBase IV file (.dbf) and using Excel I can easily see the data inside. What I am trying to do, if I can figure out a way other than writing my own custom app, is to do a daily export/import of the data from the dbf file into a more usable database, then create some spiffy forms to mess with the data. Each day the dbf file is wiped out by the ancient program and a new one is created. My database experience is somewhat limited I have at best a rudimentary knowledge of SQL but I should be able to follow along even if I have to do a little research. Mainly what I am looking for is a way to import the dbf file into an already existing database (new or existing table) automatically via a script or something. I want to retain all the data from past days with out editing the the original DBF file. Can this be done or am I just asking the impossible?
Thanks for your time,
Donavan

Hello DBA's:
I need to extract a particular file from our AS 400 system on a daily basis and do some processing on it. Also I want to do the daily processing only on those records that have been added/updated since the initial load.
Here is the approach and possible implementation.
Approach
I have the DB2 source data containing 10 columns (Col1 to Col5 together form the key) and the rest are attributes. I am interested only in the key and two attributes. So I load my table with only Col1 to Col7 ( 5 for key and the two attributes). I then do my processing on this table.
Here is the implementation given by a member of dbforums -
You'll then have to deal with 3 potential actions,
INSERT: New records on the file.
DELETES: Records that don't exists.
UPDATES: Records that are on the file, but attributes have changed.
You had given me this code template.
CREATE TABLE myTable99 (
Col1 char(1)
, Col2 char(1)
, Col3 char(1)
, Col4 char(1)
, Col5 char(1)
, CONSTRAINT myTable99_pk PRIMARY KEY (Col1, Col2))
CREATE TABLE myTable00 (
Col1 char(1)
, Col2 char(1)
, Col3 char(1)
, Col4 char(1)
, Col5 char(1)
, CONSTRAINT myTable00_pk PRIMARY KEY (Col1, Col2))
GO
INSERT INTO myTable99(Col1,Col2,Col3,Col4,Col5)
SELECT '1','1','a','b','c' UNION ALL
SELECT '1','2','d','e','f' UNION ALL
SELECT '1','3','g','h','i' UNION ALL
SELECT '1','4','j','k','l'
--DELETED
INSERT INTO myTable00(Col1,Col2,Col3,Col4,Col5)
SELECT '1','1','a','b','c' UNION ALL--NO CHANGE
SELECT '1','2','x','y','z' UNION ALL-- UPDATE (My comment - Instead of an update I want to insert a new record)
SELECT '1','3','g','h','i' UNION ALL--NO CHANGE
SELECT '2','3','a','b','c'--INSERT
GO
SELECT * FROM myTable99
SELECT * FROM myTable00
GO
--DO DELETES FIRST (My comment - Before deleting, I want to copy the rows that I am going to delete on a separate table to maintain history. Then I want to delete from a). I don't get the logic. If the rows of the old extract are not in new extract then delete them. So shouldn't it be <> instead of =. why the where clause condition)
DELETE FROM a
FROM myTable99 a
LEFT JOIN myTable00 b
ON a.Col1 = b.Col1
AND a.Col2 = b.Col2
WHERE b.Col1 IS NULL AND b.Col2 IS NULL
-- INSERT (My comment - I don't get the logic of the where. If the rows of the old extract are not in new extract then delete them. So shouldn't it be <> instead of =)
INSERT INTO myTable99(Col1,Col2,Col3,Col4,Col5)
SELECT a.Col1, a.Col2, a.Col3, a.Col4, a.Col5
FROM myTable00 a
LEFT JOIN myTable99 b
ON a.Col1 = b.Col1
AND a.Col2 = b.Col2
WHERE b.Col1 IS NULL AND b.Col2 IS NULL
-- UPDATE
UPDATE a
SET Col3 = b.Col3
, Col4 = b.Col4
, Col5 = b.Col5
FROM myTable99 a
INNER JOIN myTable00 b
ON a.Col1 = b.Col1
AND a.Col2 = b.Col2
AND ( a.Col3 <> b.Col3
OR a.Col4 <> b.Col4
OR a.Col5 <> b.Col5)
GO
------------
Can anybody look at My comments and answer them or revise this code template if need be?
Brett Kaiser - I sent you an e-mail on this. Can you respond to it when time permits.
Thanks

I've got a query that returns the data I need. I want to put the query in a stored procedure such that, when the SP runs I get a pipe delimited text file on disk. I don't really want to mess with SSIS, etc. Is there a Q&D way to do this?

I want to check a table to see what rows have been updated today, then write to a text file some data from the selected rows; then I want to automate this (DTS package? TSQL stored procedure job?) to run every night at midnight. Is the DTS Wizard the best way, that's what I did, but have not confirmed that it is writing a new text file every day, and does each new version write over the old one?

We keep a database of events that are classified by severity. I've got a good, efficient query that gives me the grand total for these events. And I have a bad slow query that breaks down the information into daily totals.
My fast query will count the totals for 3213586 events in 4 seconds. The slow daily query takes about 60 seconds for each day.
Please help optimize my slow query!

I'm a newbie to SQL. I'm using SQL Server 2012 on my local machine and I need to find a way to output my queries as Excel files. I came across these codes for Interactive SQL (what is intercative SQL by the way?) but they don't work in the SQL query window:
SELECT * FROM SalesOrders;
OUTPUT USING 'Driver=Microsoft Excel Driver (*.xls);
DBQ=c: estsales.xls;
READONLY=0' INTO "newSalesData";
It seems the "OUTPUT" command is not a valid command. I really liked that piece of code (may be because it is so simple and carries over very few lines)! Do we have something similar for SQL Server 2012 that can do the job?

I have database tables for
Stores
StoreId, Name
Products
ProductId, Name
Transactions
TransactionId, StoreId, ProductId
I was just given an excel file with a list of 300 Stores.
I need to find out if these stores are selling our products and if they are , how many products they are selling.
One way of doing this , that I can think of right now is individually querying the Transactions table for each of the store in the excel sheet and then copy the results output back to the excel sheet.
Is there a way I can write a query against all the Store names from the excel file ? I need to get this done in the next few hours.

We have some reports run quite slow because the queries are complicate and tables are large. So we create a materialized view in Oracle which store the result from the query and refresh it occationally. How to do this in MSSQL? I try the indexed view but seems it has lots of restrictions, our query has sub queries and cross database table joins so can't use the indexed view. Any other object or temp table can be used to cache the report data and be accessed globally by other procedures?
Any suggestions are welcome,
Cheers

I have a directory with images and a table in my DB with the path of each file. The main application allow me to create reports where I can display an image, so I was thinking to use a query like:
SELECT [ID]
,[PT_CODE]
,[FILE_PATH],
CASE WHEN [FILE_PATH] IS NOT NULL THEN
(SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET(BULK [FILE_PATH], SINGLE_BLOB) TT)
END
AS IMAGE_LOADED
FROM [DB].[dbo].[TABLE_MR_FILES]But I keep getting the error:
Incorrect syntax near 'FILE_PATH'.I have try multiple combinations without luck to make the OPENROWSET read the path stored in the column [FILE_PATH]. What am I missing?
Note: I am using MSSQL 2012. I don't want to import the images into the DB just load them in the fly as needed by the report runned from the application. I have full access to the DB so if a store procedure is the solution I can go with it.

I have a 3rd party dashboard application that I can only use SQL authenticated logins to connect to the database.
I'm trying to create a query within the application that will directly access an excel file through a linked server.
As a test, I login to SSMS as the sql auth user to run the linked server query below but the following error is returned:
select *
from Corporate...[Sheet1$]OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "Corporate" returned message "Cannot start your application. The workgroup information file is missing or opened exclusively by another user.".
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "Corporate" reported an error. Authentication failed.
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "Corporate".
When I login as a Windows auth user, I can successfully run the above query.
I noticed within the linked server's security definition that I cannot specify a windows auth user as the mapped Remote User or as the Remote login
I've tried creating a Credential object with the identity of the windows user and assign that object to the sql auth user but to no avail. I still get the same error
I am using SQL Server express so the option of an automated server agent job to import the excel file is not available.
