I need a script that will return the mdf & ldf for multiple databases.
I am currently running...
sp_helpdb 'TestDataname'
...and copying the size of the mdf and ldf into an excel spreadsheet.
How can I get the mdf AND ldf file size for all of the databases in an instance? I need the MDF and LDF seperated and I want the actual size of the file as it appears on the file system.

I have a SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition install that I am needing to do the following:
- Provide db_owner access to a single user. Have the db_owner privilege apply for the user in all Schemas of the database (this is a generic AD account that is being used for an application).
They are wanting me to do this because they do not want to get so granular as to tell me all of the objects that the user will need specific access to in any of the given Schemas of the database(s).I have 8 databases, and each one has additional Schemas. These are all contained in a Default instance.I am finding that without explicitly applying permissions to the various objects in the Schemas that are not the default Schema for this user, I am a bit stuck.Is there any way to have the db_owner permission apply to the single user for all the Schemas in a given database (without making them a Sysadmin)?

Dear all,
I wrote the below script to add a SQL server login account that is the db_datareader, db_datawriter, and granted permission on all stored procs, functions, and views on all databases within a server.
Code Snippet
USE master
GO
SET NOCOUNT ON
DECLARE @database_name sysname
DECLARE @object_name sysname
DECLARE @object_type char(2)
CREATE TABLE #databases (DATABASE_NAME sysname, DATABASE_SIZE int, REMARKS varchar(254))
INSERT #databases EXEC sp_databases
-- ++++++++++++++++++ add SQL Server Login ++++++++++++++++++
IF EXISTS (
SELECT 1 FROM master.dbo.syslogins
WHERE [name] = 'WEB_USER2'
) BEGIN
DECLARE db_cur CURSOR LOCAL FAST_FORWARD FOR
SELECT DATABASE_NAME FROM #databases
OPEN db_cur
WHILE 1 = 1
BEGIN
FETCH db_cur INTO @database_name
IF (@@FETCH_STATUS <> 0) BREAK
EXEC ('USE ' + @database_name +';
IF EXISTS (
SELECT 1 FROM sysusers
WHERE [name] = ''WEB_USER2''
) BEGIN
EXEC sp_revokedbaccess ''WEB_USER2''
END
')
END
CLOSE db_cur
DEALLOCATE db_cur
EXEC sp_droplogin 'WEB_USER2'
END
EXEC sp_addlogin
@loginame = 'WEB_USER2',
@passwd = 'password'
-- ++++++++++++++++++ loop thro' all User-Databases ++++++++++++++++++
DECLARE db_cur CURSOR LOCAL FAST_FORWARD FOR
SELECT DATABASE_NAME FROM #databases
WHERE DATABASE_NAME NOT IN ('master', 'model', 'tempdb', 'msdb', 'distribution', 'ASPState')
OPEN db_cur
WHILE 1 = 1

EXEC('USE ' + @database_name +';
DECLARE obj_cur CURSOR GLOBAL FAST_FORWARD FOR

EXEC('USE ' + @database_name +'; GRANT SELECT ON dbo.' + @object_name + ' TO WEB_USER2 ')
END
END
CLOSE obj_cur
DEALLOCATE obj_cur
END
CLOSE db_cur
DEALLOCATE db_cur
DROP TABLE #databases
plz revise it if you have better idea! Thx!

Hello,
My company works with SQL Server 2005 express locally with Visual Studio to develop websites. Everything works very well.
We use SQL Server 2005 express on our production server as well. We change the database over to a non-User Instance when the site is ready to go live. Everything works fine here as well.
We run into issues when databases get near 100 MB. This is well below the stated database size limit for Express of 4GB.
At that point, about once a day, a site with a "large" database will stop responding. The error that we'll get is "Cannot open database 'DBNAME' requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'DBUSER'
The only way we've found to fix this is to restart the SQL Express service. Obviously, that isn't a very useful alternative.
Has anyone run into anything like this? Could we have some setting wrong?
Would moving to the full version of SQL Server 2005 fix this?

I concatenate multiple rows from one table in multiple columns like this:
--Create Table
CREATE TABLE [Person].[Person_1](
[BusinessEntityID] [int] NOT NULL,
[PersonType] [nchar](2) NOT NULL,
[FirstName] [varchar](100) NOT NULL,
CONSTRAINT [PK_Person_BusinessEntityID_1] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
[Code] ....
This works very well, but I want to concatenate more rows with different [PersonType]-Values in different columns and I don't like the overhead, of using the same table in every subquery ([Person_1]). Is there a more elegant way to do this, without using a temp table or something else?

We are in the design phase of a project where it is estimated there will be 150 SQL Server databases - each one housing similar information on each of 150 client sites. The client needs a reporting tool to analyze and make comparisons across databases. We were thinking about a using a data warehouse. Does SQL Server have a native solution to this type of problem ? Or is there another, better way to approach this ?

Hi please could someone give me a explination of how SQLserver deals with multiple databases, We have multiple website that are all run from the same server all from SQLserver. Now we have a couple of databases which are very busy and have a lot of people constantly accessing them and then we have quite a few with much less traffic.
How would these databases effect each other? Would the busy database, mean that the many small databases will all be slowed dramtically?
Everything is okay at the moment but we are considering putting another fairly large database on the server and am worried about it having a sever effect on the smaller databases. Cheers Ed

I have a situation where I need to do some reporting for simular asset records but the data is listed on different database from the same server.
I was curious as to the way to write the queries that I will need.
Lets say I have 3 databases and I am looking for a asset of some type and the ID is a serial number.
The serial will be on the main table from each database. Is there a way I can set a relation from a view between these records?
I.E.:
1: Database A -DSNA_tblMaiin - Serialnumber
2: Database B -DSNB_tblMaiin - Serialnumber
3: Database C -DSNC_tblMaiin - Serialnumber
I believe that this is a dot notation question.
Thanks in advance,
Gene

Hi,
I have to manage many SQL Server databases on several servers. How can I manage the jobs, backups and the space on the disc without going to each and every server and database and job? Is there any script to run this? It will be very helpful if you can provide me the sample script or point me to any web site where I can get the info/script for this. Thanks in advance...

Dear Readers,Is it possible, like in Access, to link to tables in other SQL databases that are on the same server? I have a query that I originally had in Access that queered from multiply databases. It did this by having those other tables in the other databases linked to the database that had the query.

I am using SQL Server 2000.
I am working on a project where there will be multiple databases on a single instance of SQL Server. Each database will have the exact same schema but will be accessed by different groups of users.
What is the easiest way to sychronize changes between the databases, so that if I add a column to one database, it will be reflected in the other databases. If I add, remove, or alter a stored procedure, I want the change to be made in the other databases. I want the data in each database to remain isolated. In other words, I do not want replication of the data, only the schema of the databases. I would like to have a single "master" database that I use to make any schema changes and all the other databases be schema mirrors of this database each with their own data.
I have looked into SQL Server replication, but this didn't seem to work the way I wanted and I wasn't able to publish column changes etc.

Can we assign two logins for two different databases on target server. For example, I would like to create a Linked Server between ServerA and ServerB.
ServerB has two databases on it and both using different logins to access. Say DB1 has Login1 and DB2 has Login2
So can I create something like this:
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'db_link', @srvproduct=N'SQLServer OLEDB Provider', @provider=N'SQLNCLI', @datasrc=N'ServerB'
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname=N'db_link',@useself=N'False',@locallogin=N'Login',@rmtuser=N'Login1',@rmtpassword='Password1'
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname=N'db_link',@useself=N'False',@locallogin=N'login',@rmtuser=N'Login2',@rmtpassword='Password2'
Am I able to access two different databases using this same linked server. I tried but with no success.

I am trying to reconcile two different databases. Each database holds customer information and some of this information is represented as drop down tables. Here is how it is linked
Structure
Tables Fields
Attribute names Name, AttID, AttValue
Attribute Values AttID, AttValue, CustID, CustCode
Customer DBID, DBCode,CustID, CustCode, FName, LName
Database 1 Sample
Attribute name Attribute Values Customer
Color 8, 0 8, 1, 1234, 6 892, 14, 1234, 6, John, Doe
red 8, 1 8, 2, 1234, 6
blue 8,2
Database 2 Sample
Attribute name Attribute Values Customer
Color 5, 0 5, 3, 1234, 6 892, 14, 7434, 5, John, Doe
red 5, 3 5, 4, 1234, 6
blue 5,4
Within a database, the ATTID and Attcode link the attribute and attribute value tables and they link to the Customer table with CustID and Cust Code. One Customer may have multiple entries within the Attribute value table
The Customer tables in each database are linked by the DBID and DBCode values. The other ID's are not necessarily the same across databases.
The object is to compile a list of Customers where these attribute values vary between databases. There are approximately 56,000 Customers in the customer table and 710,000 entries in the attribute values table.
My attempts to do this have produced cross joins with millions of values returned

Greetings.
I have a setup/deployment question regarding SQL Server Encryption.
Internal database encrypts data in 3 different tables. This could execute on any one of 6 different servers.
The tables with encrypted data are replicated to another database on different servers (3)
How should the keys/certificates be created so that the data in the replicated database can be decrypted?
In my test scenario so far, I have been unable to have the second database decrypt the data that was encrypted on the first database (currently on the same server).
-- Create Database Master Key
CREATE MASTER KEY ENCRYPTION BY
PASSWORD = 'p@ssw0rd'
GO
-- Create Certificate
CREATE CERTIFICATE MyCertificate
WITH SUBJECT = 'My Data Encryption Certificate',
EXPIRY_DATE = '10/31/2010';
GO
CREATE SYMMETRIC KEY MyKey
WITH
ALGORITHM = AES_256,
IDENTITY_VALUE = 'My Symmetric Key',
KEY_SOURCE = 'Unique phrase that will be used to secure the key'
ENCRYPTION BY CERTIFICATE MyCertificate;
GO

have a Prod Server A having TDE enabled on 2 of those databases. I have a Prod Server B having TDE enabled on 3 of those databases. Now I have to create a single Dev server Server C for all the above 5 databases residing on the two servers. So how can I restore all the 5 database backup files on server C.
Does it mean that I need to copy the certificates and Keys from both the Prod server to this Dev Box and then restore the backup files. Once done, I can enable the encryption ON on those 5 database on Dev box or is there any different approach.Also how will tempdb behave in this scenario.

automatically replicates new databases to Availability Group partners - if you do a little prep work on your environment first.To make it work:
1) Create linked servers on all group members pointing to all other servers in the group, with names matching the hostnames they represent.
2) Ensure suitable credentials (or 'current context' impersonation) for linked servers. Also: Enable RPC and RPC OUT
3) Run the DDL code below.
4) Schedule hadr_replicate_queue on [master] to run as often as you want initial syncs to occur. Every 5-10 minutes is plenty for most purposes.
5) Connect to an availability group listener and call CREATE DATABASE :)
I use a slightly more extended version of this code at home to do things like permissions synchronization across replicas - I essentially allow applications to install direct to an availability group replica and then have all the relevant objects replicate to other nodes. I don't really like going through manually and doing things, even though there's an AddIn from SQLSkills for management studio - it still requires manual intervention.
The main use I have for this at home is that I'm using the Azure pack, and want to automatically ensure that my newly created 'SQL Server Cloud' databases are highly available, plus it means when I install a non-alwayson aware product it doesn't require any extra work afterwards to allow failover to another machine.

We have multiple databases on a single instance in an OLTP environment. I have my data files on a separate SAN LUN from my transaction log files (and a few NDFs split out onto additional LUNs). I was wondering if there is a performance benefit to putting each LDF file on its own LUN? Or at least my few busiest LDFs?
We are currently on 2012, but I'm having to put together specs for a 2014 installation and need to answer this question without having an environment in which I can benchmark different setups. I just want to hear whether or not others have done this (why or why not?).

Hi,
I'm trying to create a database that takes specific information from a number of databases on different servers to make some reporting that we have much easier.
I'm pretty new to SQL so I'm not sure of the best way to proceed. I read an article that suggested I use the OPENROWSET command. The problem is, the version of SQL that came with one of the programmes we use is limited and will not allow you to turn on the allow "Ad Hoc distributed Queries" so the SLQ statement will not execute.
I'm confused why it won't let me to connect through ODBC as I've created a web page that selects data from this database with no problems!
Here is the SQL statement that I've written to make sure it is the correct one (on the msdn library page it said that this was the ODBC connection):
SELECT a.*
FROM OPENROWSET('MSDASQL','DRIVER=(SQL Server);SERVER=APPOLOACT7;UID=sa;PWD=***************',
'SELECT * FROM MDCTestAndDev.dbo.TBL_CONTACT') AS a
I've also created the ODBC connection using the tool on Administration Tools>Data Sources ODBC
Any help would be greatly appreciated (also any ways of selecting from one database and inserting it into another will be helpfull)
Thanks

Hi!
I have 7 source databases and one target database, all using the same structure. The structure is made of 10 tables, with foreign key constraints.
I need to merge the source databases into the target (which won't have any data before that process, but will already have the correct schema), and to keep the relationships between the records.
I know how to iterate over the source databases (with SMO foreach), but I'd like to know if someone can advise the best copy method for that context in SSIS ? (I don't want to keep the primary keys, but I need to keep the relationships...)
Any pointer most welcome!
best regards and thanks

I am migrating a database TESTDB from SQL 2008R2 to a new server running SQL Server 2012.
Management has decided the current sql users should have "better" user names. So the login and username "BadUsername" on the old server should be called "GoodUserName". Goodusername should have the same permissions as Badusername.
I have now restored a backup from the old server to the new server.
I used the following script for creating the login:
CREATE LOGIN [GoodUserName] WITH PASSWORD=N'difficultpassword', DEFAULT_DATABASE=[master], DEFAULT_LANGUAGE=[us_english], CHECK_EXPIRATION=OFF, CHECK_POLICY=OFF
GO
Then I run the following script:
ALTER USER Badusername WITH LOGIN = GoodUserName, NAME = GoodUserName
But the results are not what I wanted. I now have two database users: Badusername and GoodUserName. I would have preferred if BadUserName was "replaced" by GoodUserName, but it won't be a problem if I have to delete badusername manually. Worser is that GoodUserName have NOT "inherited" any permissions from Badusername.
Is there an easy way to transfer permissions or do I need to loop through the permissions of badusername and apply those to badusername?
