Dec 18, 2012I have a server which is not running optimally and I checked the default trace. I have around 600 entries in the default trace which are all Missing Column Statistics and the database is tempdb.is_auto_create_stats_on and is_auto_update_stats_on are both 1 for tempdb.

SQL 2012 :: Drop All The Auto Generated Column Statistics?
Dec 29, 2014My question: Is it okay to drop all the auto generated column statistics? (for the following scenario)
- I am cleaning up unnecessary objects (tables, unused indexes, overlapping statistics etc) from databases and found out there are more than 1400 auto generated column statistics on one database (lets call it A).
- Database A was used to be our reporting database but from last several years we are using database B for reporting. DB A has all the historical data while DB B only has valid records.
- We are updating all the column statistics with full scan nightly on database A and it is talking almost 2.5 hours to do that. Now I want to drop all the "unnecessary" statistics those were created when DB A was reporting database and they are no longer in use. There is no way to know the creation date of the column statistics that I know of. Statistics "last update date" is of no use because of our nightly job. So I was thinking of dropping all the auto generated column statistics and let the sql server create as it needs from now.
Show Server Trace Missing In SQL Management Studio?

Jun 15, 2015After SQL server service restart, a column which is set to auto increment jumped 1000. To fix the issue, I had to add T272 trace flag to SQL startup parameters. However, I did not see the column being reseeded after the service restart, it is still showing the 1000 jump. Am I doing something wrong?

May 20, 2014I am working on an existing infrastructure and i do not have liberty to change much right now. I am in a situation where app issues update statistics command quite often. So frequently that sometimes one blocks another. Is there any way i can do something like this
IF ( update_statistics going on)
dont do anything
else
run update statistics
This is temporary solution untill i fix bad inline SQL code (in app) and use SPs.

Aug 19, 2015I have been asked to create a report for one of our clients. The report is pretty basic but I am concerned about the overheads with my planned approach.The report is at a table and field grain to include values for:
* Min column value
* Max column value
* Number of discrete values
* Number of populated values (not NULL)
My current plan is to have a cursor over a limited view of sys.tables and sys.columns that will run a dynamic SQL query to import the results into a table that I can then output.There must be a better way of doing this and I don't have access to any DQS services.
SQL 2012 :: Turn Off Server Audit Trace
Mar 21, 2014Somehow someone turned on a audit on the sql server and it is filling up our hard drive and shutting down sql server eventually. Been trying to google how to shut this audit off but coming up with no via soolution yet. how can I turn this trace off. Each fiel says AuditTrace and date and they happen every other minute. I went into the sql profiler and can pull up the files but how to shut the trace off, it does not say.

Aug 3, 2014I am attempting to create a new trace but I get the following error message: "failed to start a new trace".
I have been doing some digging and as I understand it, I had to find the directory Profiler uses for temporary files. So, I typed the following in the command window "SET TMP" and I received the following reply:
C:UsersRossAppDataLocalTemp
Now, according to the forum: [URL] ...
I am supposed to check that the system folder pointed to by the TMP environment variable exists and is not crammed with files.
Well, when I went to the directory C:UsersRossAppDataLocalTemp, it is indeed full of both files and directories. The size is 16.3 MB and has 133 files and 63 folders.
When I had a look at the Environment Variables window and chose TMP the value is "%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalTemp" which according to my limited understanding is the equivalent to C:UsersRossAppDataLocalTemp.
So, what I am wondering is am I supposed to totally clear out this directory? I am not too keen on doing this because I don't want to stuff my PC up.

Aug 22, 2014Set up a trace with the events RPC:Completed, SQL:BatchCompleted, SQL:BatchStarting, and SQL:StmtCompleted.
When I issue the statement: SELECT * FROM XyzView there is nothing captured in Profiler. If I script out the view and then execute the select statement that defines the view, it does show up in Profiler.
I've tried adding a lot of the other events, i.e. SP:StmtCompleted and the various other StmtStarting events and the trace still does not capture anything.
Am I capturing the wrong events or is this known behavior? My goal is to see what the overhead is for using a view versus persisting the results of the view as a table and referencing that instead. The view in question is against static data, joins 9 tables, and is referenced a lot.
I can use the stats generated when I execute the select that defines the view but I still find this to be curious behavior so I assume I'm doing something wrong.
SQL 2012 :: Impact Of Trace Flag 272 On Server Apart From Disabling Identity Jump
Sep 5, 2013I am upgrading my application's SQL Server from 2008 R2 to 2012.
As discussed in the below URL I am able to see the Identity jump after I upgrade and the server is restarted.
Now since I cannot afford this and at this moment I do not have the time to create a sequence with NOCACHE and test it again I have to go ahead and add trace flag 272 in the start up parameter as this is the only solution which I can implement and even rollback without much hassles.

What I got to know, this flag will disable the new feature of IDENTITY property that has been implemented as part of SQL Server 2012 and will make it work like it was doing in SQL Server 2008 R2.
But I want to know implementing this flag would impact any other feature or performance (except the performance of IDENTITY) of SQL Server.

Jun 5, 2014I'm designing a new database which will be the back-end to a heavily-used web-based application (all these terms are relative - I guess the use won't be that heavy in the grand scheme of things, I'm only talking 100 users or so at the very most). Data from the old application database will be migrated to this one, and the old database is around 7GB in size after 5 years of use.
I have two different ways of linking some tables in mind, one which is slightly more complex than the other but which potentially has benefits over the simpler method. However, I'm concerned that I might be 'over-cooking' the design, and that performance would suffer as a result, so I've tried creating the two different versions of the database (the part of it I'm concerned with, anyway), one for each of the solutions I've got in mind, migrated the data into the relevant tables and carried out some queries on the data to collect some statistics.
The problem is that, whilst I can see that the more complex method is more expensive, as expected, I don't really understand if the difference is significant. Since I don't know what the numbers in the Client Statistics window actually mean (there are no units! I'm guessing times are in milliseconds?), or how much of real-world impact the difference will have, I'm finding it hard to interpret my statistics and come to a decision.
Querying the entirety of my tables to return ~20,000 records listing one column from each of the main tables I'm playing with, the simpler method had a Total Execution Time of 199, and the more complex a Total Execution Time of 272. Is that the statistic I should be most concerned with? Is that a difference I should be concerned about? Is the difference likely to be magnified when the database is much larger and in use, such that a difference of 73 milliseconds in this test scenario could end up being as much as a whole second in production, for example?

When a stored procedure is altered on the source, the changes are replicated to the subscribers; however, the comment headers are removed at the subscribers. Due to the vast number of stored procedures I have, I do not want to move the comments below the Create Procedure statement. Are there any other ways to have comment header move with the stored procedures?

SQL Server 2012 :: Capture Statement From Missing Join Predicate Event?
Jan 27, 2015After monitoring using SQL profiler, i found that Missing join predicate event is happening a lot.
The problem is that profiler doesn't allow me to select the textdata to know which SQL statement is causing the issue.
I tried using the spid to check what's that process is running but the problem is that application is running many sqls so when i run
select PROGRAM_NAME,hostname,qt.text from sys.sysprocesses as sps1 CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(sps1.sql_handle) AS qt
where spid=169
it gets me the SQL being run at that time not the one that causing the event.

Oct 24, 2015missing witness server information and the fail-over is broken suddenly? 4:00am no maintenance job. I have one sql job on 10pm for backup on database transaction log only.
I can see the primary have problem then perform fail-over to mirror database, the auto fail-over was broken.
I re-build the sql mirror is OK , but i want to find the root cause.

Table A could look like the following where the multiple employees could have multiple types and multiple stages.

Table B is a list of requirements that each employee must have. So every employee must have a type 1 and 2 and the associated stages listed below.

2, Stage1
2, Stage2
2, Stage3
2, Stage4
So I know that each employee should have 2 Type 1's and 4 Type 2's. I hope that makes sense, I'm trying to change my data because ours is very proprietary.
I need to identify employees who do not have all their stages and list the stages they are missing. The final report should only have employees and the associated missing types and stages.
I do a count by employee to see how many types they have to identify the ones that don't have all the types and stages.
My count would look something like this:
EmployeeNumber Type Total
100, 1, 2
100, 2, 2
200, 1, 1
200 1, 2
So I know that employee 100 should have 2 more Type 2's and employee 200 should have 1 more Type 1 and 2 more Type 2's based on the required list.
The problem I'm having is taking that required list and joining to my list of employees with missing data and pulling from it the types and stages that are missing by employee. I thought I could get a list of the employees that are missing information and right join it to the required list where the missing records would be nulls. But, that doesn't work because some employees do have the required information and so I'm not getting any nulls returned.
SQL 2012 :: Trace File Sizes
Jul 30, 2014I am in the middle of capturing a workload to try and tune a SQL instance and was wondering what kinds of sizes people capture in terms of traces. I am only 1 day into a capture and I believe a typical workload would be a week long capture and I am already at 10GB of files. I am only capturing rpc_completed and sql_batch_completed.
What sizes of workloads do other people capture and then where do you analyse them, do you have particular dedicated server for this kind of thing as at present I am looking to use my local PC. Also what rollover file sizes do people tend to use, I am currently using 1GB.

Nov 6, 2015what the ideal CPU count and Max Degree of Parallelism are for a 3rd party database server.The server has 12 CPUs, 32GB RAM and all database sizes add up to < 30GB so they can all fit in memory (I tried to force this by doing a select * from every table). On certain payroll days, the CPU gets maxed out to 100% for a few seconds.
MAXDOP was originally set to the default 0. We later changed it to 8 based on several 'best-practices' articles. However the vendor suggests to change it to 1 (no parallelism), while others suggest changing it to 4, so that one run-away query doesn't hog most of the CPUs.
I'd like to find out how many CPUs are actually being used by queries. There is a Degree of Parallelism event in URL.... The BinaryData column says :
0x00000000, indicates a serial plan running in serial.
0x01000000, indicates a parallel plan running in serial.
>= 0x02000000 indicates a parallel plan running in parallel.- What does "parallel plan running in serial" mean ?
I see a lot of 0x01000000, and a few 0x08000000's in my trace.How can i determine whether one query is hogging CPUs and if reducing it to 4 will work?
SQL 2012 :: Remove Auto Generated Statistics After Adding Index
Nov 21, 2014We have implemented a very small reporting database which has a main table that started off small and has now grown to around half a million rows. Initially, there were no indexes on the table apart from a clustered index, but as the data has grown, performance has dropped and so we have added a number of indexes. This has resolved the performance issues.
Before creating the indexes SQL Server had auto created a number of statistic objects (_WA_Sys_000... etc). After creating the indexes, new statistic objects where created for the new indexes. In some cases, there are duplicate statistics (auto and index) for the same columns.Should I go through and drop the duplicate auto statistics? Will having duplicates cause issues at all?

Alter Column Fails Due To Statistics

However, I have no idea how that got there - my bestguess would be that it has something to do with the auto generatestatistics option being set on the database. However that seems odd to mebecause we've done lots and lots of work like this and not encountered theproblem. It also seems like a quick fix would be to perform:Drop Statistics Badge.encodedidHowever I am afraid subsequent statements might fail on this db since Iwasn't really expecting this in the first place.
