Seeing Duplicate SQL Servers, When Setting Up ODBC Connection

Mar 1, 2006

When setting up an ODBC connection on a non-sql Server X and choosing from the drop down menu which SQL Server to connect to, I see two identical names for my SQL Server (Y). No matter which one I choose, Im not able to go to the screen after being asked how I want to log in (SQL server authentication)

If I build a ODBC connection from any other desktop, I only see one SQL Server Y, and am able to establish a connection to SQL Server Y, with the same user account and password as when Im on Server X.

Server X has two network cards and is teamed...could that be a possible problem ?

Any ideas ?...Thank you

Setting Up Linked Servers With SQL Server And Oracle

Does anyone know where I can get some good examples of how to set up a linked

Error On Setting Ip Partners : Servers Not Found

Sep 19, 2007

Hello,

I have un problem with the mirroring, when I set the IP of the partners, I get an error saying that the server will not exists or it's impossible to join it. I try to make a mirroring without witness between two servers.

request on first :
ALTER DATABASE [panorama2] SET PARTNER = N'TCP://192.168.1.71:5050'

I get :

Msg1418, Niveau16, tat1, Ligne1L'adresse reseau du serveur "TCP://192.168.1.71:5050" est impossible à atteindre ou elle n'existe pas. Verifiez le nom de l'adresse reseau et executez la commande de nouveau.

And it's the same problem with the second server.

I work with the sql server evaluation (I put the parameter T 1400 for). Endpoints are created (I get them with a select on systcp_endpoints) :
Mirroring 65541 1 2 TCP 4 DATABASE_MIRRORING 0 STARTED 0 5050 0 NULL

Thanks for helping.

Setting Up SQL Server Encryption Between Multiple Servers And Databases

Feb 23, 2007

Greetings.

I have a setup/deployment question regarding SQL Server Encryption.

Internal database encrypts data in 3 different tables. This could execute on any one of 6 different servers.
The tables with encrypted data are replicated to another database on different servers (3)

How should the keys/certificates be created so that the data in the replicated database can be decrypted?

In my test scenario so far, I have been unable to have the second database decrypt the data that was encrypted on the first database (currently on the same server).

-- Create Database Master Key
CREATE MASTER KEY ENCRYPTION BY
PASSWORD = 'p@ssw0rd'
GO

-- Create Certificate
CREATE CERTIFICATE MyCertificate
WITH SUBJECT = 'My Data Encryption Certificate',
EXPIRY_DATE = '10/31/2010';
GO

CREATE SYMMETRIC KEY MyKey
WITH
ALGORITHM = AES_256,
IDENTITY_VALUE = 'My Symmetric Key',
KEY_SOURCE = 'Unique phrase that will be used to secure the key'
ENCRYPTION BY CERTIFICATE MyCertificate;

SQL 2012 :: Integration Services On Different Servers

Mar 26, 2015

I have installed SQL Server on Server A. I have installed Integration Services on Server B.I found that you need to addto the integrations services MsDtsSrvr.ini.xml file the server for the database if you want to use MSDB package store. The issue I have now is how do I execute the jobs on the Integration Server. I dont want them to execute on the SQL Server. Is there a way to configure the SQL Server Agent jobs to execute the package on the other server? Do you have to setup windows scheduled tasks or some other tool to execute command line packages on the IS server?

I'm looking for any info on segregating these roles but still using the MSDB store for pacakages. I don't want SQL server installed on the IS server or IS on the SQL Server. I want the Integration Services server to do all processing... not database level obviously but flat file reads, web service calls, data manipulaiton, custom code, etc and just pass the input/output of data to the SQL server for storage or retrieval to offload the workload and segregreate responsibilities.

SQL 2012 :: Multiple Database Servers - One Instance Name

Apr 24, 2014

Scenerio : To keep a very large system running optimally in a VM cluster, Take PR01 and make PR02, PR03, PR04. Distribute the 45 databases and 9T+ of disk across multiple VM guest.

Each PR## is a SQL Server 2012 Enterprise guest on a VM 5.1 cluster.

So instead of PR01 needed 16 core and 128g of memory, each one will have 4 core and 32g of memory. Making VM HA more manageable. (yes, DRS rules will apply). Also provides more HBA paths and distributes i/o over more physical disk on the SAN.

Instead of a connection string having to know PR01.dbo.UserDB01, PR02.dbo.UserDB03, ect the connection would be PRDB.dbo.UserDB01. That way if needed 1) UserDB can be moved to any of the PR## 2) new PR05, PR06 can be added as needed. The end user and processes are not allowed to touch system databases, no PR## will have a user DB called the same name.

There are seperate VM guests on other VM clusters and Citrix servers that need access to PRDB. As things expand and move around, none of the connection strings need to be changed.

I am looking into RadWare and modifing level 7 information, but that is iffy and $$$$$$.

SQL 2012 :: CLR Returns Dates In Different Formats On Different Servers

Oct 2, 2014

I've just restored a DB from one server to another. Part of the DB is an assembly used in a Function that unencrypts some data held in a Varbinary(Max) column.

When I execute it on the original server it works fine across all rows of the table, when I execute it against the new server it fails because it's seeing dates in MM/DD/YYYY format, it works if the day of the month is less than 13, but obviously the date would be wrong!

Setting the DATEFORMAT to MDY prior to executing the function has no effect either.

It's the same DLL in the same location, the SQL Server settings as returned by DBCC USEROPTIONS() are identical.

The SQL Server editions and Window OS are the same

SQL 2012 :: Maintenance Plan Exporting To Other Servers?

Oct 7, 2014

Server: SQL Server 2012 Enterprise 64bit

I created a maintenance plan with full user database backups, backup files cleanup, and database shrink.

I did it in SSMS and it also created "Reporting Task for subplan-{xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx}".

It works fine in the development server where I created the plan. I imported the same into other environments test, stage, and prod. I did use BIDS to change the connection string manual "Local server connection". The job runs fine in other environments but it fails at the end where the "Reporting Task for subplan" is executed. I looked at the dtsx file codes and I could not find anything wrong.

It seems to be a bug at the Microsoft side.

For 99% of the time the 2 groups of databases are not related. For the 1 procedure that does move data from L1 to L2 something like

Update L2.DB.Owner.Table

On S1 I have a linkedServer with connection to L2.

SQL 2012 :: DB Setting That Affects DBCC Checkident (reseed)?

Apr 23, 2014

I have encountered an anomaly. The dbcc checkident(reseed) command behaves differently on two SQL servers.

In both cases, I am deleting from (not truncating) data in two tables, due to foreign key constraints. (I am truncating other tables, the issue is not with those tables, only with the deleted-from tables.) On one server, I need to use dbcc checkident(reseed,0) so that when I insert fresh data, it begins with identity key #1. According to MS documentation, that appears to be the correct behavior, when data has been deleted from a table, rather than truncated.

However, on the other server, I need to use dbcc checkident(reseed,1); if I use ...(reseed,0) on that server, it begins inserting data with identity key #0.

This is consistent, repeatable behavior on both servers.

SQL 2012 :: SSRS Security Setting / Can't Get Them On Report Level

SQL 2012 :: Setting Up Transaction Replication In Test Environment From Production

Mar 3, 2015

Setting up Transaction Replication in test environment. I am willing to bet that most of you take a production backup (if so, how, and using what?), restoring the database to your test environment, then running a snapshot to your subscriber and away you go.

But perhaps you take a backup of your publisher and subscriber, if so, how do you know there are no inconsistences because there were transactions sitting on the distributor?

What do you do if you have additional indexes on the subscriber for reporting, that are not on the publisher?

Here at work we are having issues with getting consistent databases set up with T Rep, missing rows, duplicate keys at subscriber etc. How to avoid these issues.

SQL 2012 :: Query Based On Column Name / Setting Up Database Table

Oct 30, 2015

I have a set of data spread across a number of tables regarding stock market data. An example of this follows:

Market Capitalization...

Date CompA CompB
01/01/11 100 5
02/01/11 102 4

Share Price....

Date CompA CompB
01/01/11 100 100
02/01/11 101 99

Event Data...

Date Company
01/01/11 CompA
02/01/11 CompB

Pretty simply, I need a way to retrieve the market capitalisation and share price data based on the event data. So for instance I say 'oh, there is an event on the 01/01/11 involving company A, the market capitalisation on this day was 100, then for the next event it was 4 for company B.

I can also transpose the data so that the company name is in the rows and the dates in the columns for the market cap and share price tables, but this leads to the issue that when I try and get the data, I don't know how to query the correct company for that date.

For instance:
SELECT Event.Date, Event.Company
FROM Event

how do I now say.....

SELECT MarketCapitalisation.Column
WHERE Column = Event.Company
AND MarketCapitalisation.Date = Event.Date.

I have played around with a few basic joins, but I am having issue with the principle of that second to last line of SQL (so only getting the correct column).

I still have a copy of the data in excel so can flip things around as needed, but that would only mean that I would have the issue of WHERE Column = Event.Date instead of Event.Company.

SQL 2012 :: Failover On 2 Servers AlwaysOn AG With Read-only Secondary Replica

Mar 28, 2014

What happens when an automatic failover occurs, in a two server AlwaysOn Availability Group configuration, where the secondary replica is configured as read-only?

Will it only allow read-only connections, or will it become read-write and can accept INSERT, UPDATES and DELETES when assigned the new role as Primary?

Is it correct that adding a third server/node, that just acts as passive and should be used for automatic failover, to support true HADR, would NOT need another license .. and that licenses would only be required for the previous Primary and Secondary (Read-Only) replicas?
