Is there a way to change the order that "select * from #table" returns data? It doesn't appear to return data in the same order that it was inserted into the table. This wasn't a problem with the same code in SQL Server 2005.

I recently run into a senario when a procedure quiered a table without a order by clause. Luckily it retrived data in the prefered order.
The table returns the data in the same order in SQL Manager "Open Table"
So I started to wonder what deterimins the sort order when there is no order by clause ?
I researched this for a bit but found no straight answers. My table has no PK, but an identiy column.

I have SSIS 2012 Enterprise, using catalog deployment and have more that 50 environment variables for connection to databases across my enterprise.
The problem when i go to configure the packages after deployment and pick the proper env variables, that are not sorted, so i have to browse all entries in order to find the proper entry in environment variables.
I have a data load process that reads data from flat file into a Stage table in sql server. The order of the records in the stage table is exactly same as the order in the flat file. The identity column on the Stage table (which is also the clustered index) represents the exact line/row number of the data in the filat file. I perform some transformations on the data in the stage table and then insert it into a cumulative table which has a clustered index on an identity column again. When I do this, does the order of the data in the cumulative table be in the same order as the data in the stage table? Anyone, please let me know if I can rely on SQL server to maintain the same order or I will be forcing a sort order on the Identity column (clustered index) of the stage table when I insert the data into a cumulative table.

I am trying to set sorting up on a DataGrid in ASP.NET 2.0. I have it working so that when you click on the column header, it sorts by that column, what I would like to do is set it up so that when you click the column header again it sorts on that field again, but in the opposite direction. In SQL sERVER 2008, I have two fields - Depatment and Employees. I need to sort the result set by employee number ascending order, with following exception
1)when department number = 50 - the preferred order is Employee # - 573 followed by 551-572 (employee # belong to Dept 50 = 551-573)
2)When Department number = 20 – the preferred sort order is Employee # 213-220, followed by Employee # 201-213 (employee # belong to Dept 20 = 201-220)

I am getting the resultset sorted differently if I use a column number in the ORDER BY clause instead of a column name.

i am inserting something into the temp table even without creating it before. But this does not give any compilation error. Only when I want to execute the stored procedure I get the error message that there is an invalid temp table. Should this not result in a compilation error rather during the execution time.?

View 9 Replies View Relatedit runs over night, pulls 10.5m rows. Inserts into a table, from a select (so "insert...select", rather than "select into"), from many tables, grouping on a max. It's complex. During the day, it runs fine - maybe 25 minutes. At night it *sometimes* runs fine, but then sometimes takes 4hours.Checking this morning there were 230 threads open for this one query. Checking sys.dm_os_tasks and sys.dm_os_waiting_tasks there were no other wait types on that session_id. None at all. Checking activity monitor, most of the existing threads were suspended on the insert.
There are 24 cores, but NUMA'd. We have maxdop on the server of 8. The maxdop option on the query is 12, just to speed up the select. Index and Stats refreshed daily. We've eight identical tempdb data files, on a separate spindle. Checking those, they are filling up using the round robin correctly

I come from a web based world were loading 1.5 million records into a temp table is suicide. I’m doing more data warehouse stuff now and I was looking into optimizing a buddies proc and noticed he was loading 1.5 million records into a temp table. We had a discussion about it because being from a web world I was drastically against it. He on the other hand didn’t feel it was an issue being it gets called once maybe twice a day. The tempdb is set to autogrow and it is on a different drive than all the other databases on the box. It has one ldf and mdf. He’s creating an index on the table after load. Why we shouldn’t be loading 1.5 million recs into temp table?

What I have set wrong on the import? Using SSIS at this point is not a real option.
As far as I know temp tables/objects will be created inside the default filegroup of the partially contained database and not in tempdb. Is it possible to either define a set of files dedicated to temp objects or define a second partially contained database dedicated to temp objects like tempdb?

In a stored procedure I dynamically create a temp table by selecting the name of Applications from a regular table. Then I add a date column and add the last 12 months. See attachment.
So far so good. Now I want to update the data in columns by querying another regular table. Normally it would be something like:

I could deploy across my environment, which is a mix of 2008R2/2012 servers, to give some information on log files. Running into a silly issue right off the bat. The table that DBCC LogInfo() conjures out of magic is different between the two. In 2012 it gained the RecoveryUnitID column. I have a problem with a Sort Transformation, I have a CSV file with 200'000 rows the csv file is about 30Mb. When the rows are processed in the Sort Transformation, SSIS generates around 160 temp files of about 10Mb each.
How can avoid so many temp files to be generated ?
Using a string of IDs passed into a stored procedure as a VARCHAR parameter ('1,2,100,1020,') in an IN without parsing the list to a temp table or table variable. Here's the situation, I've got a stored procedure that is called all the time. It's working with some larger tables (100+ Million rows). The procedure passes in as one of the variables a list of IDs for the large table. This list can have anywhere from 1 to ~100 IDs passed to it.
Currently, we are using a function to parse the list of IDs into a temp table then joining the temp table to get the query:

The problem we're running into is that since this proc gets called so often, we sometimes run into tempDB contention that slows this down. In my testing (unfortunately I don't have a good way of generating a production load) swapping the #table for an @table didn't make any difference which makes sense to me given that they are both allocated in the tempDB. One approach that I tried was that since the SELECT query is pretty simple, I moved it to dynamic SQL:

The problem I had there, is that it creates an Ad Hoc plan for the query and only reuses it if the same list of parameters are passed in, so I get a higher CPU cost because it compiles a plan and it also causes the plan cache to bloat since the parameter list is almost always different. Is there an approach that I haven't considered that may get the best of both worlds, avoiding or minimizing tempDB contention but also not having to compile a new plan every time the proc is run?

I am trying to restore .DAT file from dump. Its giving me error ..saying that the sort order id used for dumping was 42 not the default value 52.
How can i change the sort order to 42.

We have a vendor who insists that sql server 7 be set to a binary sort order. Is there any real advantage to this as opposed to a dictionary sort?

I'm trying to setup a duplicate of an old SQL Server 4.2 server to put in place while we upgrade the server, but I can't get the sort-order right. I know the existing server uses sort order id 40, but I can't find which sort-order that corresponds to during the install process. If anyone can give me a system table that lists all the sort orders names and id's, or can tell me what the text name for sort order 40 is, I would be very grateful.

I need to copy the structure and data of an existing SQL 6.5 server to one with a different sort order. Normally, I would use the transfer tool to accomplish this, but the servers are on different networks. My question is, is BCP the answer? In other words, will the data copied via BCP from the sending server be able to be copied on the recieiving server. Also, is there a way to automatically generate the BCP statements for all tables? What I would really like is to be able to get at the scripts and data files created by the transfer tool.
