SQL 2012 :: Tracking Page File Usage - Values Appear Incorrect

Jul 31, 2015

I'm looking for monitoring page file usage for SQL Server. Ultimately, I'm trying to prove that there is not a problem with a server and that it is not struggling with the workload, but someone has looked at page file usage and suggested there is a problem.

I've set up performance counters running from a separate server, but the counters relating to page file usage seem wildly inaccurate. E.g., I've got (_Total\% Usage), and (Total)\%Usage Peak), with Total Usage showing a constant value of 64, and the peak showing 92. I've also got Process (sqlservr)Page File Bytes and Page File Bytes Peak, which are showing values like 61,275,688,960 and hardly dropping below this.

If I look at Performance Monitor directly the values shown in here correlate with this, as shown in my first screenshot. However, if I look at resource monitor and look at disk activity, you can see that there is basically nothing going on (screenshot 2).

The server is more than equipped to deal with the workload, and looking at other counters for SQL there is no indication of problems, e.g. page life expectancy has a minimum value showing of 576,258, there is never less than 6GB of free RAM, SQL compilations are at a maximum of 5% of batch requests.

It is a physical server with 2x 8 core multi threaded CPUs, 64GB RAM with 58GB as the SQL server maximum. Hopefully this is enough info, but I'm happy to check anything else.

Page File Usage

Jun 17, 2007

Hi,

I have SQL Server 2005 running on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2.

The server has 3GB of physical memory and its PF size is fixed with a 2GB min and 4 GB max.

This server has only 1 database with maybe a max of about 10 concurrent db connections.

Everytime after a reboot or databse restart, the PF usage slowly grows and grows until the server locks up. It appears as though the server is not releasing the RAM after is uses it...

For example, right now, it is early in the morning and there is only 1 db connection but the PF usage is sitting at 1.87GB and slowly growing.

Has anyone ever had this issue before or does someone know how I can resolve this issue?

I would appreciate any help

Cheers

SQL Server Page File Usage;

Jun 22, 2007

Hi all,

We have our SQL Server 2005 installed in a server with below specifications.

MS Windows Server 2003 R2
Standard x64 Edition
Service Pack 2

Intel(R)Xeon(R)CPU
5160 @ 3.00GHz
3.00 GHz, 8.00 GB of RAM

The issue is ,

When a query window is opened and a procedure is executed or a DBCC command is executed , the PF usage keeps on increasing and reaches the maximum 8.81 GB and remains there forever even if the query is stopped and the session is closed.

The CPU usage also shoots up and stays between 90 - 100 %.

Now, it is not possible to open a new query or do any operation in the SQL server and a Timeout Expired error is thrown.

My questions are ,

1. Is that good for the SQL server to occupy the total RAM ?

2. Is the performance related to the RAM space occupied by SQL server ?

3. What should we do in order free the PF usage after the a process is complete ?

4. Have anyone faced similar scenario ? Any solutions ?

Thanks for your time & any help should be apprecitated.

High Page File Usage

May 3, 2007

Just built a new DB server. Using SQL2K5Standard 64bit on W2K3Server 64bit. Hardware includes 16GBs memory/dual 4-core procs and many spindles, however we only have a 2GB page file on C:. SQL is set to to usa a maximum of 12GB memory which is way more than it should need. Problem is, we are occasionally seeing very high page file usage. If Task Manager is correct, (which it really can't) I am using 10 and 13.8GB (as listed in PF Usage) But I only have a 2GB page file! Occasionally when simply copying a file from one partition to another, PerfMon shows Pages/sec jump to 10,000. Also see some very high Disk Queueing.This system isn't even in production yet. My main questions are two: 1) some documentation says with SQL2K5-64 bit running on W2K3-64bit I may not even need a page file. Is this correct? 2) What would be causing high usage of the swap file with 16GBs of installed memory? And help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

SQL 2012 :: TempDB Log File Usage Constantly Rising And File Keeps Growing?

Jun 16, 2014

The TEMPDB transaction log file keeps growing.The database server is new and the transaction log was presized to 1 GB on installation. After installing a number of databases, the log file grew over a day to 38GB. Issuing a manual checkpoint was the only way to free some space to allow it to be shrunk back to a usable size. The usage of the file is still going up.

I am struggling to find what process is causing the log to be used so heavily. Looking at the log reuse wait desc for tempdb returns "Nothing" and tempdb itself isn't being used very much or growing in size.

SQL 2012 :: Why Does SHRINKFILE Page Latch On A Page In Different File

Sep 28, 2015

I am running a DBCC SHRINKFILE on "FILE1" of a database (it has fileid = 1)...intent is to remove 70GB of file space:

DBCC SHRINKFILE (N'FILE1' , 400000).

For the SPID that's doing the shrink, In activity monitor you can see:

Waittype: PAGEIOLATCH_EX on resource: 9:3:15411328
(the DB is dbid=9)

But why does it need a page from fileid=3? Are there page dependencies between files that prevent moving a page within a given file? Does it need that fileid3 page to come along?

Its just sitting there in the SUSPENDED state for the last hour....I am going to leave it another 5 hours or so before cancelling.

The dm_exec_requests has an estimated percent complete at 83% and holding....not sure if I can believe that.

Tracking Old New Values

im trying to create a procedure that will insert/update a small table
that has an ID, AmtBefore & AmtAfter.

this is just a table that i'd be using to monitor other activity on the database.

i'm really pulling a price + ID every hour and i need to track that somehow and know when the procedure runs if a price is lower than it was the last hour, plus of course keep the ID's straight.
does anyone have a good approach to something like this?

thanks for any help on this

Incorrect Values

Mar 15, 2006

Not to sure how to explain this, but will give it my best shot.

In the table I have values as listed below:

Reference
-----------------------
5(a)
5(b)
5(b)(c)
50(a)(b)(c)
50(a)(b)(e)
55
55(a)(f)(g)

When a user searches for the 5 it should only bring rows 1,2 and 3. When he search for 50 it should only bring out rows 4 and 5. You cant use the LIKE keyword, as this brings out everything starting with 5.

Thanks...

Hope that make sense

STDEV() On Float Column Returns Incorrect Values

Nov 8, 2007

STDEV() gives incorrect values with reasonable input.

I have a table filled with GPS readings. I've got a column LATITUDE (FLOAT) with about 20,000 records between 35.6369018 and 35.639890. (Same value to the first 5 digits of precision---what can i say, it's a good gps.)

Here's what happens when I ask SQL Server ("9.00.1399.06 (IntelX86)") to compute the standard deviation of the latitude:

// Transact-SQL StdDev function:

SELECT STDEV(LATITUDE) FROM GPSHISTORY
WHERE STATTIME BETWEEN '2007-10-23 11:21:00.859' AND '2007-10-23 17:00:00.062' AND GPSDEVICEID = 0x004A08BC04050000;

0

// Zero. ZERO??!?!!
//Let's re-implement Std Dev from the definition using other aggregate functions:

DECLARE @AVERAGE FLOAT;
SELECT @AVERAGE = AVG(LATITUDE) FROM GPSHISTORY
WHERE GPSDATE BETWEEN '2007-10-23 11:21:00.859' AND '2007-10-23 17:00:00.062' AND GPSDEVICEID = 0x004A08BC04050000;
SELECT SQRT(SUM(SQUARE((LATITUDE - @AVERAGE)))/COUNT(LATITUDE)) FROM GPSHISTORY
WHERE GPSDATE BETWEEN '2007-10-23 11:21:00.859' AND '2007-10-23 17:00:00.062' AND GPSDEVICEID = 0x004A08BC04050000;

6.03401924005392E-06

// That's better. Maybe STDEV is using fixed point arithmetic?!?

SELECT STDEV(10 * LATITUDE)/10 FROM GPSHISTORY
WHERE GPSDATE BETWEEN '2007-10-23 11:21:00.859' AND '2007-10-23 17:00:00.062' AND GPSDEVICEID = 0x004A08BC04050000;

4.77267753808509E-06

SELECT STDEV(100 * LATITUDE)/100 FROM GPSHISTORY
WHERE GPSDATE BETWEEN '2007-10-23 11:21:00.859' AND '2007-10-23 17:00:00.062' AND GPSDEVICEID = 0x004A08BC04050000;

1.66904329068838E-05

SELECT STDEV(1000 * LATITUDE)/1000 FROM GPSHISTORY
WHERE GPSDATE BETWEEN '2007-10-23 11:21:00.859' AND '2007-10-23 17:00:00.062' AND GPSDEVICEID = 0x004A08BC04050000;

8.11904280806654E-06

// The standard deviation should, of course, be linear, e.g.

DECLARE @AVERAGE FLOAT;
SELECT @AVERAGE = AVG(LATITUDE) FROM GPSHISTORY
WHERE GPSDATE BETWEEN '2007-10-23 11:21:00.859' AND '2007-10-23 17:00:00.062' AND GPSDEVICEID = 0x004A08BC04050000;
SELECT SQRT(SUM(SQUARE(100*(LATITUDE - @AVERAGE)))/COUNT(LATITUDE))/100 FROM GPSHISTORY
WHERE GPSDATE BETWEEN '2007-10-23 11:21:00.859' AND '2007-10-23 17:00:00.062' AND GPSDEVICEID = 0x004A08BC04050000;

6.03401924005389E-06

// Std Dev is a numerically stable computation, although it does require traversing the dataset twice.
//
// This calculation is not being done correctly.
//
// Incidently, SQRT(VAR(Latitude....)) gives 4.80354E-4, which is also way off.

I will redefine STDEV to use a stored procedure similar to the above, but the algorithm used to compute VAR, STDEV etc should be reviewed and fixed.

Extreme Slow SQL Server 2005 And High CPU Usage - Casting Of Values

Feb 20, 2006

Hello sql and .net gurus :-)I have a problem with my website www.eventguide.it. It's completly developed under .NET 2 and SQL Server 2005 Express. My problem is the folowing:The server is a Intel 3Ghz HT processor with 1GB Ram. No other page on the running system is a CPU consuming site. We optimized the SQL statements, the code, the caching and many other parts of the website (pooling on SQL access), but the SQL Server uses about 50% to100% of the CPU and about 400MB RAM all the time. The whole site seems to be very, very slow. In fact there are many of SQL operations on every page request, but we cache a lot of them in different ways (page output caching, application caching). So I don't understand we have so much performance problems. Any suggestions for optimised code in general? I read nearly all of the MS .NET performance papers - but real world experience is the missing part :-) It is better to cast the values of a SQL reader like thisDim String1 as String = Ctype(DataReader.item(0), String)Dim Integer1 as Intger = Ctype(DataReader.item(1), Integer)or like thisDim String1 as String = DataReader.item(0)
Dim Integer1 as Intger = DataReader.item(1)Thanks a lot for your help!FOX

SQL 2012 :: Incorrect Table Size Being Reported

Aug 15, 2014

I have a table that contains 1.6 million rows, and is about 2.6GB in size.One of the columns is ntext and contained some xml.Realistically, I don't need the xml for anything older than about 2 months, however, i'd like to keep some of the data in the other fields.I decided that if I updated the xml to blank, I would see some considerable space savings, however that doesn't appear to be the case.This is the output of sp_spaceused for my table

name rows reserved data index unused
CommitmentsForPosting1660979 2740336 KB 1857104 KB312 KB882920 KB

After I updated the table to remove the xml, the output of sp_spaceused remained the same.My first thought was that it was probably statistics, so I updated statistics for the table, and nothing changed.I then updated statistics for everything in the database, still no change.I then ran DBCC CLEANTABLE for that table. I didn't really expect it to make a difference, and no surprise, it didn't.

The index on the table is a clustered index on just a GUID column.I rebuilt the index and again it still made no difference (that's a bit of a lie - index_size changed by a few hundred KB)my next test was to run 'select * into XXX from YYY' to create a copy of this table with the same data and data types. I also created the same clustered index from the original table onto the new one.If I then run sp_spaceused on this new copy of the table, I see what I expect to see in sp_spaceused - a table using approximately 256MB of space

name rows reserved data index unused
SPS_TEST 1660979 266400 KB 266400 KB 304 KB56 KB

To be honest, this isn't hugely critical, but I'm just curious as to why the original table is still reporting 2.6GB size, when I think it should probably be nearer 256MB.

Report Services 2000 Totals On Group Are Incorrect. Summing Duplicate Values

Dec 19, 2007

Hello Everyone
I've created a report with a simple dataset that is similar to this

City , RequestID, Request Amount, ClaimID, ClaimAmount
El Monte 791 52,982.00 2157 41,143.75
El Monte 3691 11,838.00 3140 8,231.14
El Monte 3691 11,838.00 3141 990.00
El Monte 3691 11,838.00 3142 2,615.00

So I group by City, RequestID. On the first group I specified the expression to be City and in the header I list the city and in the footer I list the sum of Request amount. On the second group I specified the group by Request so in the header I placed requestID and on the footer I placed Request Amount. I set request information to hide the duplicates and I even add =Sum(Fields!RequestApprovedGrandTotal.Value,"GroupByRequestID") the scope of the group. But this is what I get:

For requestID = 3691 for Request Amount is 35,514.00 not 11,838.00. All the claim sums are correct and they are located on the detail row.

I've read that a work around is to create multiple dataset but I honestly believe that something as simple as this should work on the reporting server 2000. So I've come to the conclusion that I must be doing something wrong. Can someone give me a hand on this. Thanks.

SQL 2012 :: Memory Usage Extremely High And Causes Server To Crash

Jun 11, 2015

I have been having issues with our SQL server for awhile now. It seems to run out of memory every few days and when I look at the memory dump, the MEMORYCLERK_SQLOPTIMIZER seem to take over memory and eventually cause the server to crash.

Here is the SQL verison we are using: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP1) - 11.0.3460.0 (X64) Jul 22 2014 15:22:00 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.2 (Build 9200: ) (Hypervisor)..It is on a VM on Windows 2012 server. It has 20gb of RAM allocated to it and the MAX Server Memory is set to 16.5gb.

I have seen the MEMORYCLERK_SQLOPTIMIZER grow to about 11gb at the time of the server crash. Why that is happening? What is causing the memoryclerk_sqloptimizer to get so high? I have looked it up and it looks like it has to do with ad hoc requests, but is there something I can do to bring that memory down when it gets so high so that I can prevent a server crash?Do we just need to add more memory or is there a memory leak somewhere?

SQL 2012 :: Does Trace Flag 2371 Indirectly Reduces CPU Usage

After carefully analyzing the situation for almost a month, I pulled the trigger and made an exception at work; we did enable trace flag 2371. We have some tables with billion of rows and outdated statistics causing horrible plans. Tried several methods to update those, but did not solve the problem or was too CPU intensive, causing other issues.

Anyway, one of the side effects I am seeing so far is average vCPU went down by almost 40%. Nothing out of usual (besides the flag) has been enabled or was executed. So my assumption is, CPU hungry plans are now gone or reduced.
