SQL 2012 :: Transaction Log For Database Xxxx Is Full Due To REPLICATION
Dec 4, 2014
Getting below error most of the times .
"Server was unable to process request. ---> The transaction log for database 'xxxx' is full due to 'REPLICATION'."
I am doing below steps to clear the log everytime.
1.EXEC sp_repldone @xactid = NULL, @xact_segno = NULL, @numtrans = 0,@time = 0, @reset = 1
2.checkpoint

We had a siutation last night in our production environment that forced us to revert back to an earlier version of the database (before a major code rollout that failed). After restoring the days full backup (with NORECOVERY), and then restoring a DIFF backup (FULL RECOVERY and had checked Preserve Replication Settings)...the transaction replication failed.
Message #1
The replication agent has been successfully started. See the Replication Monitor for more information.

I've tried reinitializing the publication/subscription and while that took brand new snapshots and copied it over to the replicated data server, it did not fix the problem.I read from a different post that I could try running "sp_replrestart" but that ran for about a half an hour and didn't appear to do anything but fill up our log files...did I not wait long enough?
The only thing I know to do at this point is to drop the publication on the production server and rebuild it completely (and with all the tables we're replicating that would take quite a bit of time.

Hi all,
I am creating a Data Flow custom component in SSIS, and my input/output columns are dynamically created depending on the value of a custom property of the component.
Then, as soon as I modify this custom property, I make some job in SetComponentProperty(), that I have overrided in my PipelineComponent, to create my input and ouput columns.
After validation, I have the following error message:
Error 3 Validation error. Data Flow Task: DTS.Pipeline: The package contains two objects with the duplicate name of "output column "AMOUNT" (4714)" and "input column "AMOUNT" (4711)". Package.dtsx 0 0
I create an input column named "AMOUNT" with an ID 4711 and an output column named "AMOUNT" with an ID of 4712.
What is surprising is that when I manualy create the same columns with the default advanced editor of my component, using the menu "Show Advanced Editor...", there is no error !!!
I think that I am doing something wrong but I don't know what...!
Have someone any idea about that?
Here is the code I use to create new input columns:
IDTSInputColumn90 newInputColumn = inputColumns.InputColumnCollection.New();
newInputColumn.Name = virtulaInputColumn.Name;
newInputColumn.LineageID = virtulaInputColumn.LineageID;
newInputColumn.UsageType = DTSUsageType.UT_READONLY;
newInputColumn.ErrorRowDisposition = DTSRowDisposition.RD_NotUsed;
The virtulaInputColumn is the linked real input column that I get from IDTSInput90.GetVirtualInput()
Here is the code I use to create new output columns:
IDTSOutputColumn90 newOutputColumn = defaultOutput.OutputColumnCollection.New();
newOutputColumn.Name = outputColumn.Alias;
newOutputColumn.SetDataTypeProperties(DataType.DT_WSTR, 0, 0, 0, 0);
The outputColumn is here one of my objects that I have created from the custom property of my custom component.
Thanks in advance for any help...

I am basically trying to update a table which reflects account transactions. Accounts get paid in full but occasionally balance payments can be reversed and I want to update the table to show this - I need to show which period the account was previously paid in full.I've created a simplified version of the scenario and below are a couple of examples of things I've tried that do not work. I understand why they do not work but I'm struggling to figure out how to update the 'PeriodPrevPaidInFull' field.

Transaction_Period_Index int,

DebtBalance money,

I wanted to schedule the transaction replication. How do I do it? Currently I have set up a transaction replication which runs continuously and synchronizes the changes with immediate effect.
I need to configure a replication which will gather logs from the publication once in a day.

I have a publication on Sql Server 2012 that uses transactional replication to 7 subscribers (these are a mix of Sql Server 2008R2 and Sql Server 2012). Last night I scheduled the Snapshot job to run to "re-publish" the database to the subscribers. I had a few new table to push down. Unfortunately the snapshot job became the deadlock victim. Now updates to the publisher are not being sent to the subscribers.
Short of rerunning the snapshot job, is there a way to repair the replication so the updates to the publisher are pushed to the subscribers? The "re-publish" can only be run overnight when there is very little impact to users.

SQL 2012 Ent SP2
Database is in simple recovery mode, and published with transaction replication push subscription, just one subscriber but the database is huge. I don't want to overwrite the schema at the subscriber either.
I had to run an alter database command on a published database, it created so many logs that an extra drive had to be added along with an extra log file to accommodate all the logs.
The problem I have is I'd like to know clear the file of logs so I can drop the temporary log file, and give the drive back, but I cannot.
I have tried dbcc shrinkfile with the emptyfile option but it never clears, I have also tried it with notruncate and truncateonly options (mainly out of desperation).
I do not need to worry about point in time restore as a full backup is taken before and after the operation. After which the database will be put back into Full recovery mode.
I have looked at log_reuse_wait_desc and the file says 'Replication', so I am now thinking the file cannot empty because replication is keeping one of the VLFs active. I tried dropping and recreating the subscription hoping it might free something up and I could get somewhere, but it made no difference.
Do I have to remove replication completely to get round this? Surely not.
I have also tried putting the database back into full recovery mode, doing a full DB backup, and a transaction log backup, but its made no difference, which is also what makes me think a portion of the log is still active because of replication, and perhaps the transactions have not gone through to the subscriber, which raises another question, why not?
I have not tried restarting SQL server, as I'd like to know a way out of this without having to do that, plus I do not think it would make any difference anyway.

SQL2005 SP2+Cum.Patch Rrevision 4 (9.0.3175)
I always get this message, when i want to run a stonger query or a transaction that takes a longer time:
"The transaction log for database 'tempdb' is full. To find out why space in the log cannot be reused, see the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases"
I checked the log_reuse_wait_desc column: LOG_BACKUP
I ran tr log backup...nothing...
I tried to set to simple reco mode the db...this helped... temporaly...i got again below message.
( i wouldn't like to set to simple mode the db because the size of db is 160GB now....so i don't want to eun a fullbackup)
TempDB size is 50MB now and it can grow until 7GB.
The trqansaction log size is 14GB and there are 50GB free space, so it can grow.
This symptom occurs since i installed SP2 and the CP Rev.4.0
What is the real problem ?

I have a setup of transaction replication between one publisher and subscriber in the Same server.Now, I need to add a new subscriber to the existing publisher. So publisher database name is DB_A and Subscriber 1 name is DB_B. So the new subscriber will be DB_C. Is this kind of setup possible on one server?
If yes then at the time of reinitialization is it going to apply the snapshot on DB_B as well as DB_C?Also let say if due to disk error DB_B gets corrupted then will data be still replicated between DB_A and DB_C? (Assuming publisher, subscriber 1 and 2 are sitting on individual disks).

Setting up Transaction Replication in test environment. I am willing to bet that most of you take a production backup (if so, how, and using what?), restoring the database to your test environment, then running a snapshot to your subscriber and away you go.
But perhaps you take a backup of your publisher and subscriber, if so, how do you know there are no inconsistences because there were transactions sitting on the distributor?
What do you do if you have additional indexes on the subscriber for reporting, that are not on the publisher?
Here at work we are having issues with getting consistent databases set up with T Rep, missing rows, duplicate keys at subscriber etc. How to avoid these issues.

Good evening all,
I am new to Microsoft SQL and have been dumped right into the deep end with an anchor around my ankles.
The problem I am experiencing is about 6 months back a guy setup a Microsoft SQL server at my client. He then took his bags and left. Then a developer developed an application which uses a database on this sql server. Everything worked well for around 4 months.
Yesterday IBM Director notified me that I am running dangerously low on disk space on the server. By the time I came in to work this morning I had 12mb free disk space. The evil thing here is the transaction log for the downtime database. It has grown to over 60gb, all because the correct measures were not implemented to prevent this.
The problem that is occuring is no one can do anything on the database now due to the lack of free space. I have tried reading the sql books online but due to my lack of sql experience and knowledge I am stuck.
Can someone please help me? What I would like to do is pull my transaction log down to an acceptable size.
I was thinking of creating a new database and then importing all the data from the current database and then just deleting the current database however am slightly concerned that this may result in some data being lost.
Thanks in advance,
Richard

I am attempting to create a Test db from a full backup of the production db. With 2012, I cannot do it the the way i had done it in previous versions (and now i understand why because of Logical names).
The Test db runs in the same instance as Prod db.
I attempted to run this but come up with errors. This is what i executed:
RESTORE DATABASE TEST FROM DISK = 'E:<path>FULL.BAK'
WITH REPLACE, RECOVERY,
MOVE 'PROD' TO 'E:<path>TEST.MDF';
The errors are all cannot execute due to PROD is in use.

We are trying to restore from a backup (.bak) of a sql 2005 database with full text catologs to sql 2012.
We are getting errors saying that the backup file context are different from what we are trying to restore to, even if we try to create a new database from the backup.The new database is just a test database. The source is a production database with full cataologs.
The normal restore from a bak file does not seem to work.
We dont need the full text catalogs in the new database, but cannot change settings in the source production database.
Is there a way to take a backup of the sql 2005 database without the full text cataologs being included ? , without changing setting in the source database beforehand ?

We take a full backup in the early morning and hourly transaction log back during the working hours for one database in the production server. The application team made certain changes to the design of the said database in their development server. The backup from the development server was restored to the production server during working hours. After the restoration should we take a full backup before next transactional logbackup? Would the transactional log backup with out a full backup after the restoration of a database be valid?

I have a stored procedure that does the following
BEGIN TRANSACTION OUTERTXN
BEGIN TRANSACTION
Copy records from live to archive
END TRANSACTION with commit or rollback
execute sproc to write audit log with success or fail
IF transaction was committed
BEGIN TRANSACTION
Delete records from live the archive
END TRANSACTION with commit or rollback
execute sproc to write audit log with success or fail
End IF
END TRANSACTION OUTERTXN with commit if both inner transactions were successful or rollback if either failed
If either inner transaction rolled back execute sproc to write audit log saying whole process is rolling back End IfMy problem is that if the outer transaction rolls back then I am losing the two audit records because they are part of the transaction scope. I want these executes to commit even if the master transaction fails.

I received an alert from one of my two secondary servers (all servers are running 2012 SP1):
File 'E:SQLMS SQL ServerMSSQL11.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLDATAMyDatabaseName_DateTime.tuf' is not a valid undo file for database 'MyDatabaseName (database ID 8). Verify the file path, and specify the correct file.
The detail in the job step shows this additional information:
*** Error: Could not apply log backup file 'MyDatabaseName_DateTime.trn' to secondary database 'MyDatabaseName'.(Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.LogShipping) ***
*** Error: Table error: Page (0:0). Test (m_headerVersion == HEADER_7_0) failed. Values are 0 and 1.
Table error: Page (0:0). Test ((m_type >= DATA_PAGE && m_type <= UNDOFILE_HEADER_PAGE) || (m_type == UNKNOWN_PAGE && level == BASIC_HEADER)) failed. Values are 0 and 0.
Table error: Page (0:0). Test (m_freeData >= PageHeaderOverhead () && m_freeData <= (UINT)PAGESIZE - m_slotCnt * sizeof (Slot)) failed. Values are 0 and 8192.
Starting a few minutes later, the Agent Job named LSRestore_MyServerName_MyDatabaseName fails every time it runs. The generated log backup, copy, and restore jobs run every 15 minutes.
I fixed the immediate problem by running a copy-only full backup on the primary, deleting the database on the secondary and restoring the new backup on the secondary with NORECOVERY. The restore job now succeeds and all seems fine. The secondaries only exists for DR purposes - no one runs reports against them or uses them at all. I had a similar problem last weekend on a different database that is also replicated between the same servers. I've been here for over a year, and these are the first instances of this problem that I've seen. However, I've now seen it twice in a week on the same server.

We need to replicate data from a live database to a reporting database nightly.
There is data which is only needed for the reporting function - namely the selection criteria for reports which are to be run nightly or monthly.
Is it possible to have extra tables in the target database, holding the selection criteria?
If not, we'll have the reports running heterogeneous queries between the target database and a separate database with the selection criteria in it.

We have a database which is (a subset of tables are) replicated to another via transactional replication. Whilst most changes made at the published database reach the subscriber within a matter of seconds, we have a SQL Agent job which performs a calculation in the published database and then immediately exports data from the subscriber using log shipping. The result is that the calculated changes do not make it through to the exported transaction logs in time.
Is there a way to manually "refresh" the subscriber databases using T-SQL?
