SQL 2012 :: VMWare Snapshot Breaks Windows Cluster?

Dec 17, 2013

We have set up SQL server 2012 alwaysOn availability group on windows 2012. It runs and fails over successfully. Recently, a VMWare creates a snapshort of a primary and it breaks a cluster. We saw errors in a cluster log.

In VMware setting, The quiesce option is turned off for these VMs. Also, we configured cluster setting :Windowssystem32> (get-cluster).SamesubnetThreshold = 10 ( Relaxed )

Cluster node 'Test1' was removed from the active failover cluster membership. The Cluster service on this node may have stopped. This could also be due to the node having lost communication with other active nodes in the failover cluster. Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your network configuration. If the condition persists, check for hardware or software errors related to the network adapters on this node. Also check for failures in any other network components to which the node is connected such as hubs, switches, or

File share witness resource 'File Share Witness' failed to arbitrate for the file share 'TestTEstQuorum'. ensure that file share 'TestTestQuorum' exists and is accessible by the cluster. In alwaysOn error log, A connection timeout has occurred on a previously established connection to availability replica 'Test1' with id [CAD40D99-E333-457E-9993-BBE977D2CDA2]. Either a networking or a firewall issue exists or the availability replica has transitioned to the resolving role.

SQL 2012 :: VMWare Providing Failover And Redundancy

Sep 30, 2015

Today a vendor bluntly stated that VMWare provides the same failover and redundancy for SQL that would render "AlwaysOn" high availability unnecessary.

Essentially that VMWare would detect a problem and failover and have .9999 uptime .

Windows Update Breaks SQL Server Express

Nov 3, 2007

I've let my Vista Ultimate 64-bit installation on a Dell Precision M90 pretty much have its way with automatic update which has worked reasonably well...until now.

I've installed the MS CRM 3.0 laptop version into my Outlook client. Everything was working well until automatic update tried to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (KB 921896) which failed. It also rendered the Online/Offline functionality unusable and, with the installation accomplished while I was Offline, all of my CRM data is sequestered. Uninstalling the CRM client and SQL Express with it while I'm in an Offline condition has some real downsides so I thought I'd try to fix the SP2 issue through this group and then work my way back through the product teams.

The Windows Update installer returns a failure code of 2B22.

I've tried the downloadable SP2 upgrade but only the SQLEXP32.EXE seems to be available through any of the links in the SQL Express pages I've yet visited, not the WOW version.

Thanks,
Richard

SQL 2005 On Windows Compute Cluster 2003 Will It Work ?

Hi all

I am busy looking at the WIndows 2003 Comptu Cluster setup (Well I am loading it)

And I am interested to know if any body has run SQL 2005 Enterprise on this platform before ?

I know that Windows Compute Cluster uses a JOB scheduler to run tasks and this can be customised for each task , to allow it to use more resourses or less .

I also know that SQL 2005 is much more capable of running cluster mode with database replication and log file shipping

I want to know is of I load SQL 2005 on a Clustered Compute setup will it handle the SQL jobs, database requests with out the scheduler.

The question might be a bit tricky but any help is appricated

Thanks

SQL 2012 :: Transaction Replication Snapshot Failed

May 28, 2014

I have a publication on Sql Server 2012 that uses transactional replication to 7 subscribers (these are a mix of Sql Server 2008R2 and Sql Server 2012). Last night I scheduled the Snapshot job to run to "re-publish" the database to the subscribers. I had a few new table to push down. Unfortunately the snapshot job became the deadlock victim. Now updates to the publisher are not being sent to the subscribers.

Short of rerunning the snapshot job, is there a way to repair the replication so the updates to the publisher are pushed to the subscribers? The "re-publish" can only be run overnight when there is very little impact to users.

Memory Sizing For A SQL 2000 Cluster - Windows 2003 Enterprise SP1

Oct 4, 2007

I am looking for some recommendations for memory sizing and options for a SQL 2000 Cluster. This is a two node cluster built on Windows 2003 ENT SP1 (x86). Both the nodes have the following hardware:

- 4 x Dual Core AMD Processors
- 16 GB Memory
- EMC Shared Disk

We are running six SQL 2000 instances and don't expect each of these instances to use more than 1.7 GB of memory. All these instances are going to support BizTalk 2004 Databases. I already have /PAE enabled on the nodes. I am looking for the following answers:

- Do I need to enable AWE on all the instances even if the instances ? Currently, we don't have that enabled and we have seen some issues regarding excessive paging even when there is physical memory available. The DBAs think that we don't need to enable AWE. I am bit confused on this one.

- We normally run 3 instances on each node and would like size the cluster in such a way that it can take six instances in case of a node failure

Any input will be highly appreciated.

SQL Server 2000 Installation Problems On Windows 2003 Ent X64 Cluster

Jun 26, 2006

I have a Windows 2003 Enterprise x64 edition cluster setup and functioning normally. Now, I am trying to get SQL Server 2000 installed as a failover cluster but am having some difficulty. When installing, I get the message '[sqsrvres] ODBC sqldriverconnect failed' in the event log. The message happens when the installer is trying to bring the SQL Server Service resource online.

I am able to ping the name of the instance successfully. I am able to manually start the 'MSSQL$InstanceName' service. I have turned off the firewall on both machines, but this did not help. I have the DTC Service setup as a resource in the same cluster group.

I also read http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;815431 which seemed promising, but did not reolve the problem.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Recovery :: Windows 2008 R2 AlwaysOn Cluster - Migrate DR Node

Oct 8, 2015

I have a Windows 2008 R2 Always on Cluster with 3 nodes (two in the primary site and one in the DR site).

Primary Site:
     -Primary Site Server1
     -Primary Site Server2

DR Site 1 (to be decommed):
     -DR Site Server1

Our company is planning on decommissioning the DR site.  But before we do this, we want to add a 4th site to the cluster.  Migrate the data...and then decommission the original DR Site.

Is it possible to have this configuration:

Primary Site:
     -Primary Site Server1
     -Primary Site Server2

DR Site 1 (to be decommed):
     -DR Site Server1

DR Site 2 (NEW DR Site):
     -DR Site Server1

IF this is possible, do I simply add the new DR site to the existing cluster (same steps as adding the first DR node to the cluster when the cluster was originally configured?  or are there special steps?

SQL 2012 :: Script Failure During Snapshot For Transactional Replication

Apr 9, 2014

I built a number of publications on a SQL Server 2005 box to replicate to a SQL Server 2012 subscriber. All the publications except one are fine. During the snapshot phase of schema script generation I get Script Failed for Table 'dbo.MediaDisplayLibraryFileData'. From the Replication monitor for the Snapshot Agent on the Publication I get, "Column FileData in object MediaDisplayLibraryFileData contains type VarBinaryMax, which is not supported in the target server version, SQL Server 2000." This message makes no sense since the target server version is 2012. I have even checked that the compatibility level was set to 110 before I started the process of setting up replication. How do I resolve this error?

Failover Cluster Using 64 Bit Windows 2k3 On Single HBAs And DS400 With Dual Controller

Apr 12, 2006

We are trying to setup a system to system failover cluster using twonodes (x346) which each have a single hba running to seperatecontrollers on the DS400.For full redundnancy, IBM recommends dual path from each node but wedont need that. The current setup has two completly seperate paths. hbaon node 1 to controller A on DS400 and hba on node 2 to controller B.If i take a controller offline, failover works fine to jumo to othercontroller and throw all resources to it's node but if i shutdown anode- the cluster loses all attached storage and DS400 is unaware toswitch ownership to other controller. Is there a way to us mscs without dual path from each node?anotherwords... if either node or controller fails on a single path, wewant the other path to become active.our main goal is to use sql server 2005 clustering on the cluster.everything checks out perfect if i only use one controller on the DS400for both nodes but this brings us back to another single point offailure.I saw that Qlogic has MPIO drivers on thir website for the DS400 but itseems as though they are for 32bit systems and the install errors outwith:C:Driversmpio1.0.8.4 (w32)>install.exe -iPre-Installing the Multi-Path Adapter Filter...SuccessInstalling the Multi-Path Bus Driver...Failure. Adding 'unaware' SQL Server 2005 Components To Existing Windows 2003 Cluster

Feb 11, 2008

This is a fresh install of SQL Server 2005 (64bit) on a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 64bit OS. The Cluster has been built and SQL 2005 has been installed (Database Engine(clustered), Analysis Server(clustered), Notification Server, Integration Server, Reporting Services). SQL 2005 SP2 has been installed.

Now, I want to install Notification Server, Integration Server and Reporting Services on the second node for high availability.

When I select 'Install New Components' from Add/Remove Programs, the System Configuation Checker tells me theres a version difference and to:

To change an existing instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to a different edition of SQL Server 2005, you must run SQL Server 2005 Setup from the command prompt and include the SKUUPGRADE=1 parameter.

I'm using the same binaries as the original install. Could this be a result of installing SQL 2005 SP2?

Can someone help me out with this. I'd prefer using the setup interface instead of a command line script.
