SQL Server 2012 :: Inserting Information From One Table Into Another

Aug 12, 2015

I am working on moving information from one of our databases into a newer one the company has recently setup. I am working in MS SQL Server 2012 and am trying to Inset/Update (depending on the information) a part table. I will list the two tables I am working on as Old (where I am getting the information) and New (where it is to be inserted into).

The old table has about 250 columns of information, most of which is not needed. The needed information is as follows: Name, ID, Component1, Component1_PIN, Component1_SN, Component1_Description, Component2, Component2_PIN, Component2_SN. The component section repeats up to Component12.

The new table has columns setup as such: Name, ID, Case, CasePIN, CaseSN, Case_Desc, Processor, ProcessorPIN, ProcessorSN, Processor_Description, Memory, MemoryPIN, MemorySN, Memory_Description, etc.

The issue I am having is that in the old table each component can have Case, Processor, Memory, etc in that one column. I need to insert Case, Memory, etc into the correct column in the new table while keeping intact the rest of the information.

Example:

Old Table
Name | ID | Component1 | Component1_PIN | Component1_SN | Component1_Description | Component2 | Component2_PIN | Component2_SN | Component2_Description
Nest8 | 5682 | Case | 901834 | 237848117 | Black, rectangular | Memory | 9081234 | 5398798134 | NULL
Nest8 | 5978 | Case | 901463 | 237848138 | Black, rectangular | Processor | 2394875 | 2903857809 | Bad
Reds3 | 5683 | Memory | 2405 | 89752342 | Crucial | HardDrive | 92387595 | 457982234 | NULL
Bass | 5644 | HardDrive | 79872346 | 5321675789 | NULL | Case | 10984528 | 3498769872 | NULL

I am not sure how to loop through and grab each part and place it in the column it needs to be while keeping it with the ID.

Store Membership Information Using Access .mdb Database

Aug 1, 2007

Hello,
I'm trying to create a web page that is protected by a user login. I want the user data to be stored in an access database file and not an SQL Server express database.

I was following this guide on msdn:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/879kf95c(VS.80).aspx

However, I was doing everything locally using a file system and not IIS. (Which seemed to work fine)

My main problem is that I cannot get the membership information stored in an access database. The only provider option was one for the SQL server express. I think I will have to make a custom provider? However, I read through some of that documentation and was equally confused. ( http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Aa479031.aspx )

Anyone have a solution?

Does It Store All The Results To Tempdb Database When I Query Against A Large Table Which Joins Another Table?

Jun 25, 2007

Hi, all experts here,

I am wondering if tempdb stores all results tempararily whenever I query a large fact table with over 4 million records which joins another dimension table? Since each time when I run the query, the tempdb grows to nearly 1GB which nearly runs out all the space on my local system drive, as a result the performance totally down. Is there any way to fix this problem? Thanks a lot in advance and I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly for your kind advices.

With best regards,

Yours sincerely,

Or it can be something different? Last two weeks what I checked was Read/Write MB/s to tempdb increasing progressively.

After it was reseting and again 1MB/sec..

What I checked , External company which install SQL Server made one file for tempdb, next week or during breaktime(it will be possible), I would like make 8files next weekend work.

SQL 2012 :: TempDB Data And Log Files On One SSD?

Mar 3, 2015

I'm having an argument with our infrastructure architect who has just gone and bought lots of SSD drives to use for our tempdb data and log files, sounds great doesn't it? There is a catch though, his plan is to add the disks to the two available slots in each blade in a RAID0+1 configuration, effectively giving you one usable drive, and adding both data and log files on to one disk.

I then pointed out that SQL Server best practice is to host tempdb data and log files on two separate drive to reduce contention. The architect then basically said that because this isn't spinning disk the issue of drive, r/w contention isn't an issue I don't agree with this and wanted to get some opinions from the community, I'm still advising that two separate disks should be used but someone just went and spent £80k ($150k) on SSDs and doesn't want to back down...

SQL 2012 :: Splitting TempDB With Multiple Files?

May 21, 2015

So we have new servers that are going to be installed with SQL 2012 and I'm debating the wisdom of splitting tempdb with multiple files.

I know it's a myth that performance automatically improves if you split it into a number of files based on processors, but I'm debating the wisdom of putting a file on each of my data / log file drives.

For instance, I have a server with a C: drive (OS), D: drive (Data for system DBs and install of programs - 458 GB), an F: drive for user DB data files (767 GB), and a J: drive for log files (255 GB).

Obviously no files are going on C:. I'm debating on whether or not we should even leave system DBs on the D: drive given in our current 2k8 servers, we end up with Memory.dmp files over flowing the D: drives as well as .cabs and other install / update files that tend to collect on that drive over the years.

But if we leave the system DBs on D:, I'm wondering if adding a second tempdb file to F: and a third to J: will improve query performance or not.

SQL 2012 :: Create Database For TempDB On Startup

Aug 10, 2015

While trying to move the tempdb log file to a different disk, I mistakenly executed the following and then stopped and restarted SQL Server.

USE master
GO
ALTER DATABASE tempdb MODIFY FILE
(NAME = tempdev, FILENAME = 'L:MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLData emplog.ldf')
GO

Now I can't start SQL Server and see this error in the log files:

[code]

2015-08-10 15:28:42.55 spid7s Error: 5171, Severity: 16, State: 1.
2015-08-10 15:28:42.55 spid7s L:MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLData emplog.ldf is not a primary database file.
2015-08-10 15:28:42.55 spid7s Error: 1802, Severity: 16, State: 4.
2015-08-10 15:28:42.55 spid7s CREATE DATABASE failed.

Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors.

[code]

I did not have remote connections enabled yet, so the resolutions I have found that include sqlcmd or starting in single user configuration are not working. Any way that might allow me to restore the usual tempdb settings, which I think would allow SQL to start again?
