Jul 1, 2015
SQL Server 2012 two node cluster.I was checking the authentication after registering SPN and found the following.When the windows cluster is in one node and the SQL Server role is failed over to the other, windows logins to SQL Server use NTLM authentication.Or is it just my SPN is not working properly ?

I have found endless articles online and tried a few different formats of the web.config file but i can not get SSRS authenticating through the proxy.
</runtime>
<system.net>
<defaultProxy enabled="true" useDefaultCredentials="true">
<proxy bypassonlocal="true" proxyaddress="http://PROXY:PORT"/>
</defaultProxy>
</system.net>
</configuration>
Is there a way to pass credentials in so we can specify which account to authenticate with?

Scenario: a stored procedure is executed in database ABC. The procedure includes a MERGE statement with objects in the ABC and DEF databases. A Windows login is executing the procedure. Contained users is not enabled anywhere on the instance. And the user is not orphaned in either database, i.e. the login is associated to the user correctly by-sid in each one.
Of course, the Windows login must be authenticated to access database ABC, and authorized to execute the procedure. That is happening. Most of the time, so is the MERGE statement. But every once in a while we're seeing an odd "Network error code 0x2746 occurred while establishing a connection" message. The procedure has a TRY/CATCH retry loop around the MERGE statement, so it enters that loop. Re-read: the procedure is still running, the network error wasn't about the client connection executing the procedure. So what was it about?
Does that MERGE statement, accessing database DEF, require SQL to authenticate the Windows login again, because it's a different database (even though it's on the same instance, and was already authenticated for ABC)? There shouldn't be any other network activity involved in that phase of the execution. Plus, when the process had been using a SQL Server-authenticated login, this never happened.
But before I go blaming our DCs or network... I need to know, are they in fact involved here, or not? I believe they are, but... never had to care enough before to really know. I'm trying to stave off the "let's switch it back to a SQL login" demand that's sure to come soon, if I can't find an appropriate resolution to this.

We have a bunch of SQL 2012 databases which use SQl Server authentication (essentially local dev instances). Is it possible to take a backup of one of these database and then push them onto a (central) server which uses Integrated security (based on active directory authentication) using a script to change and map the authentication model in the process?

I am attempting to set up an always on cluster on VMware for testing. setting up everything through the Failover cluster is fine, the trouble comes when I try to set up the AlwaysOn availability group. Whenever I attempt to specify a network location I receive the following error: Operating System Error 1265(The system cannot contact a domain controller to service the authentication request..).
I looked up this error and most sites point towards a Windows 8 homegroup issue. Since this is a on a domain, I don't think it is relevant. I also added the service accounts from server A to Server B and visa versa. I even added the computer objects to its opposite partner..I have attempted to use "Join Only" and do a manual copy.

Hello,
(Using win2k, sqlserver2k, framework 1.1)
I have an fairly data-heavy application that uses Windows authentication (Trusted connection/aspnet account) to connect to Sql Server. The site uses IIS basic authentication.
On the dev server everything works fine but when I move to the live server things get strange and it starts to crawl along. (Pages load OK but then it just crawls as it loads the datagrids etc. Sometimes it brings back incomplete/incorrect data )
BUT When I use Sql Authentication to connect to Sql Server and there is no problem at all!
Ok, there is something obviously wrong with the live server (which is identical setup to dev)but I dont know where to start.
Any ideas??

Hi all,
I've got two applications which both have a database on my MS SQL 2000 server. The problem is, one application must use Windows Integrated Authentication (which it is currently using and cannot be changed) whilst the other application which I'm trying to configure must use a SQL password.
Since the server has already been configured to use Windows Integrated Authentication for the existing database and application, how do I configure the other database to use the SQL password?
Thanks.

Hi all,
My work is using a shared application
which accesses a MSSQL 2000 database. To access the application, the
folder on the Windows 2003 Server is shared and users can access the
folder through a shared drive.
For the application to access the
database, it uses an ODBC connection to the MSSQL server which
originally used the SA password.
We have recently switched to using
Windows Integrated Authentication because we believe it offers a
higher level of security. However the only way in which we have been
able to enable this is to add the windows users to the SQL server.
The problem with this is that the
application sets permissions for individual users on what records
they can see within the database. We have found that by adding the
windows users to the SQL Server, they can bypass the permissions the
set by the application by simply using any application that can use
an ODBC connection, such as Enterprise Manager, and see all the
database.
One way around this would be to set up
domains of users with access privileges to the tables which reflect
the permissions set by the application, and configuring a view of the
data so they may only see the records that they have permissions to.
However to do this would require a high administrative cost to ensure
that changes made in the application are reflected in the privileges
of the SQL server.
Instead, is there a way the SQL server
can authenticate that the ODBC connection is coming from the correct
application using Windows Integrated Authentication?
This would allow the applcation to
determine security, and stop users from connecting to the SQL server
using other applications.
Alternatively, can the SQL server,
using Windows Integrated Authentication, also ask the application to
supply a username and password?
Any help with this matter would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi,I'm using SQL Server 2005. My Connection String looks like that at the moment: <add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=xx;Initial Catalog=xx;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=xx;Password=xx" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> Now I'd like to change this kind of authentication to Integrated Windows AuthenticationI added the WorkerProcess IIS_WPG to the permitted Users but it didn't help.Changed the Connection String to this:connectionString="Server=xx;Database=xx;Trusted_Connection=True;"All I'm getting is that my NetworkService is not permitted to access DB when I try to connect to the DB in ASP.NET.How can I properly configure that? Thanks!

Hi,
Say, I have configured my SQL to use Mixed Authentication. Now, I have a applicaiton which uses my SQL Server. The application just creates a database in SQL Server and uses the database to store its information.
This application also has a SYSTEM DSN under ODBC through which it accesses the database. For the application to access this database, should I only use SA (as my SQL instance is configured to use Mixed Authentication) or can I use Windows Authentcation too...
If I should only use SA, do we have a documentation which talks about this.
Thanks
Santhosh

Does anyone know what SQL Server uses to identify other servers which contain SQL Server, when you attempt to register a new server through enterprise mgr? For instance when you go through the new sql server registration wizard, the second screen allows you to choose what server you would like to register, and it shows you the available servers on the lan that contain sql server 6.5 or 7.0. What is enterprise mgr using to locate the other servers containing SQL Server? Thanks in advance.

Can anyone give me advice on how to register 6.5 servers using SQL 7.0. Every time I try and register a 6.5 servers it fails. I get an error stating that "I must upgraded the 6.5 server or later to be administered by this version of SQL-DMO". I can't upgrade the server to 7.0 because the COTS product that we are using as the front end relies on 6.5. Is there any way to do this? Or do I have to install 6.5 on my workstation as a separate application than 7.0? Someone please help?

I just created a new db on a programmer's machine. Now I cannot register his sql server on my sql server. It doesn't like 'sa'. I can connect as 'administrator' but then I cannot do anything. Seems like the logins are messed up. I am not able to execute any stored procedures as administrator.
Any ideas besides reloading sql?
Thanks.

When using MSDE or SQL7 as the back-end to Access2000 projects (adp),
the examples often have an .mdf file to match such as say NorthwindCS.mdf
The instructions are:
1. set this file aside,
2. create a database with this name then
3. stop SQLServer,
4. copy own file to msql7data...
5 use it....
although this soemtimes works, i mostly get a "suspect" database
I was hoping to fix this with DBCC REPAIR, but support for this command seems
to have disappeared

Hi,
I mistakenly registered a SQL 6.5 server in SQL 7.0. I would like to remove the registration entry, since I often will click it by acident, and it will fire up the SQL 6.5 EM session. However, when I right click on the server and try to select the "Delete SQLServer Registration" from the menu, that option is greyed out. Is there any way I can remove this SQLServer somehow?
Thanks,

Hi! Just started playing, but when I try to register an active (on the network) 6.5 server in the 7.0 EM I get the message that I must upgrade the 6.5 server...I know in 6.5 I could access 6.0 servers after runnning a script on the 6.0 server, but so far I don`t see anything like this for 7.0. Will I end up having to run 2 versions of EM on a machine (if possible) to access my 6.5/7.0 servers? (I know I won`t be able to do anything fancy, but it is nice (under my 6.5 EM) to be able to manage server activity/db`s from one machine, regardless of them being 6.0 or 6.5!

Hi,
I have recently installed SQL Server 2000, And trying to register a remote SQL 7 server, through enterprise manager which fails with the following error message: Timeout expired
I am able to connect to the same server using Query Analyzer.
I was able to register this server from the same machine, prior to the installation of SQL 2000. Also, I am still able to connect to other SQL 7 servers, with SQL 2000 enterprise manager.
Any Ideas?

Over the weekend we changed ISPs on our SQL Server 2000 machine. The only configuration change was the IP address. I'm able to register the server from client machines using EM which are on the same network, but I can't register it from home. I've verified the IP address, username/password etc and the connection just fails with the message 'Sql Server does not exist or access is denied.' Could this be a port issue? Any ideas? Thanks.

I need help with a problem that is driving me nuts and should be so easy that it is mindless. The problem is with registering SQL servers in Enterprise Manager.
The network is a routed environment with many subnets. TCP/IP addresses are assigned by DHCP and name resolution is done via WINS. The SQL clients are set to use Named Pipes as the Net-Library. The servers are using standard security. I have the correct sa password. Then I try to register a SQL server. It returns a message that it is unavailable.
The SQL box is visible in Network Neighborhood; is able to be pinged both via machine name and IP address; the msssqlserver service is running on the box. I can register the box using standard security and the same credentials in EM right on the server. Why can't I register it from a client?
Thanks in advance,
Ed

The organization I work for will be converting to SQL Server 2005 in the near future so I downloaded the free 90 day trial to familiarize myself with the software. I've installed the software and my plan now is to go through the Tutorials. I need to access AdventureWorks sample database. AdventureWorks did not download upon initial setup so I've downloaded/installed it into what appears to be the correct folder: c:ProgramFilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsSamples. I cannot, however, seem to locate it within SQL Management Studio. As advised by the tutorial I've tried setting up a New Server Registration but I can't seem to locate AdventureWorksDB when I'm browsing for it under the Connect to Database:' option under the "Connection Properties" tab of New Server Registration.
I am familiar with database development as it relates to MS Access but I realize this is a whole new ball of wax. Any advise would be appreciated as it relates to this problem but also any information, i.e., very basic books on learning SQL Server would also be appreciated.

Ok, well I just installed Visual Studio.NET 2003 on my PC, and to
prepare for next years courses I thought I might get going on some of
the exercises. But I am rather new to this and when I try to expand
"SQL Server" in the "Server Explorer Window" I get this message.
Could not automaticly discover any SQL Server instances.
Choose Register SQL Server instance from the shortcut menu if you know there are SQL Server instances on this machine.
From there all I know is that I can right click on "SQL Server" and
chose register new instance, but I do not know what to enter, and it
suggrests leaving it balck but that doesn't work. I will get an
instance but when I try to expand it another error pops up.
So as you can see I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to SQL Server, can any one help me with this?
Thanks again,
