We are in the process of deploying security software that will change AD service accounts automatically every 90 days. I was wondering if changing the password on accounts used for SSRS certificates will break the certs? Are there any other gotchas we should be concerned about with automated password changes in SQL?
View 2 RepliesI have SQL Server 2012 and want to encrypt my connections by using a wildcard [URL] ssl certificate from a trusted party. After installing my certificate i want to selecti in in de SQL Server Configuration Manager but the certificate does not appear in the properties of protocols.
In older versions it was possible to add the thumprint of my certificate to the registry, but in this version that result into a sql server that cannot be started anymore.
I have a SQL Server 2012 Standard and needed to fulfill a requirement to set Force Encryption on the Server with a DoD Certificate.
I will be altering my client connections to use Encrypt=True; TrustServerCertificate=True (The client is a .Net Web Application).
The OS is where SQL Server 2012 Standard resides is Windows 2008 R2 DataCenter Service Pack 1 64-bit.
What I am needing to know is where do I get the DoD Certificate from? and Do I just install it on the server where SQL Server resides?
Hi, We are trying to implement Service Broker between SQL Server Express and SQL Server on the Same machine and we are having problems with certificates. We are creating a certificate on SQL Server, backing up the certificate on a file system and then loading certificate on the SQL Server Express from the file and we are keep getting the following error: Msg 15208, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The certificate, asymmetric key, or private key file does not exist or has invalid format.
Following script runs fine on SQL Server.

I log in as myself using Windows authentication, and I'm in the sysadmin role, and this is within a dev instance running on my PC. I execute:

ALTER LOGIN [sa] WITH PASSWORD=N'newpassword'

It's runs without error, but when I try to login with the 'sa' account to the same database using SQL Server authentication within SSMS, I get the following error: Login failed for user 'sa'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)
I can print out the error stack if you think it adds something, but I'm guessing that there's something happening here that's obvious to a SQL Server DBA admin.

I have been provided System AdminLocal Admin rights on the Server. The Server has been set up like a Domain Controller. I have tried all of the command line options that I know and I can find. I have not been able to get any to work, they all fail login to SQL. Before I take the route of reinstalling SQL on the server I want to make sure I haven't missed any thing, especially since this is a 100% production environment with 3rd party processes and applications attached that are not documented or supported. (nightmare)

I would like to perform an audit of weak passwords, which is well documented for sql users. Using the same methodology, I should be able to audit weak passwords for contained users. To accomplish this, I must be able to find the location of the password hashes for the contained users.
I have looked at sys.syslogins and sys.sql_logins, which both have the password hash for server level users, but not contained users. I was able to find sys.sysusers, which does contain contained users, but no password hash.
What is the location of the password hashes for contained users?
I have a table of users including: UserName, Password (comuted col), FirstName, LastName, Address and other details....
I have to keep 10 Recent passwords , so I created another table "ut_Password " (Table2)
This table contains the following columns : Username, Password , and Password_Date.
I searched a lot but could not find something similar in my opinion need SP for it.
- 10 row Max for Password History in table 2
- when user change password it's need to be uniqe and it should not appear last 10 passwords
- Each user can have a maximum of 10 lines containing history password table
- Most old password deleted and replaced with a new password will enter the correct date (FIFO method first in first out).

I regularly (every month or so) get the error "The target principle name is incorrect. Cannot generate SSPI context" when trying to remotely connect to my SQL 2012 instance. The SQL service is running using a managed service account. I understand this error can occur when the service account cannot authenticate with AD properly. Looking at the properties of the managed service account, the password for the account was automatically changed this morning - just when the error started.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a package protected by a password - I am already unhappy that to get it to use the configuration file to change connection strings for the production servers I have had to hardcode the password into the config file - very insecure!
However, the package now deploys correctly to the production server and will run from there OK, but NOT if scheduled as a SQL Server Agent Job. Thus is because however often I edit the command line to include the password after the DECRYPT switch (which it has prompted me for when I click on the command line tab), the Job Step will not retain it.
If I open it up after I have edited it and closed it, the password has disappeared.
I know that if I run dtexec plus the code in the Command Line tab (with the password), the package runs OK.
This is driving me insane!
I have read all the other posts and so I tried replacing the SSIS package step with a CmdExec step and pasting that code into there - then I get an OLEDB error..
The code I use is:

I am receiving the following error message when attempting to create a new SQL Authenticated login id.
Password validation failed. The password does not meet the requirements of the password filter DLL. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15119)
I have four servers all running SQL Server 2005 SP2 on Windows 2003 Ent. SP1. Of the four servers, only one received the above error message using the same TSQL below.
CREATE LOGIN TEST_LOGIN WITH PASSWORD = 'pvif9dal' MUST_CHANGE, CHECK_EXPIRATION = ON
All four servers are in the same domain, which if I understand correctly, the password policies are therefore inherited at the OS level by the domain. The password being used is within the password policies of the domain.
Any ideas as to a root cause?
I tried to install an ALLDATA database which run with SQL Server 2005 express edition. The data base fails to install becase of the following code that come up which is related to AS password requirement. The error that come up is:

On the login prompt for Report Server, there is a checkbox option to "Remember my Password." I check this, login successfully... but when returning to the Report Server, I am again prompted for the password, although the user name is saved. No matter how many times I do this, the password will not save in IE7. I have tried this on 3 different computers with IE7. In IE 6, I do not even get the checkbox as an option, just the user name/password prompt. In Firefox, the password saves fine. Any ideas what would be causing this?

I am trying to create a encrypted row in my database Everything here worked except that when i run the final query to decrypt the data It just comes up with null for each row. im trying to drop all certificates on my database, and then the master key, but cannot do this as there are objects encrypted by one particular cert that i called fcert. I done this ages ago and cannot remember what i encrypted with this cert. to drop the master key i have to drop the cert and to drop the cert i have to make sure no objects are encrypted by it. how is this achieved?

I can use "CREATE CERTIFICATE" to add a CER certificate into a SQL database. How can I do so with a PFX certificate? From the document, it can be done so with a CER file and a PVK file, but only a PFX file.

he certificate cannot be dropped because one or more entities are either signed or encrypted using it.
Is there any way I can drop this as I would like to recreated it and add a whole host of sps that I need to use the xp_cmdshell.

I'm having this really strange issue with mirroring.
I've followed the instructions on http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191140.aspx to the letter, leaving out the witness server part, as I don't have one.
All works OK, but when activating the mirroring on the principal server I get the usual error 1418 error. I fired up SQL Server Profiler to see what was happening, and the following error emerged.
Connection handshake failed. The certificate used by the peer is invalid due to the following reason: Certificate not yet valid. State 104.
Anyone have any ideas?
