SQL 2012 :: Copy Backup Files From One Server To Another?

Sep 23, 2014

I've an emergency requirement to copy Source server database backup files to destination Server through xcopy command. Backup job on source server runs daily, so once this job get completes all databases backups needs to be moved to destination server. But here the main concern is "the backup files on destination server shouldn't be overwritten, they should be placed separately as Source server job runs daily".

We've a command which overwrites backups on destination server. But we need to keep backups on destination at-least for 4 weeks (means : retention should be 4 Weeks).

SQL 2012 :: FOR FILES Command To Delete Old Backup Files On Remote Server?

Feb 24, 2015

I have the need to delete old backup files via TSQL job. Found this solution online:

PushD "
emoteservershareDIFF" &&(
forfiles -m *DIFF*.sqb -d -1 -c "cmd /c del /q @path"
) & PopD

It works remotely if I run it via command prompt. But when I add this to a TSQL job on my remote SQL instance, it runs without deleting anything. What I'm missing?

Copy Files After Backup In Maintenance Plan

Sep 19, 2007

Hello,

We're new users of SQL Server 2005. I created two maintenance plans...one to backup the database at 2 AM daily and one to back up transaction logs every 30 minutes. These maintenance plans write to a local disk. What we want to do, within the maintenance plan, is copy the files as soon as they are written to a remote server. Is that possible?

Thanks in advance.

SQL 2012 :: AlwaysOn Backup Plans - Copy Only Backups

Jul 11, 2014

We have just implemented a SQL 2012 always on environment. We have a primary and secondary server. I am confused about how to set up the backup plans. The application team was happy to tell me that in sql 2012 always on we can offload the backups to the secondary, thus reducing overhead on the primary server.

However, the secondary only supports copy only full backups. I am unsure how these would be useful in a disaster event? I could not apply any trx log backups on a copy only backup. This means I need to run my full backups on the primary server?

SQL 2012 :: Zero Out Backup Files?

Jan 28, 2015

Looking at the documentation, it would suggest that as well as data files, when a backup file's created it will also be zeroed out unless the service a/c's been given Perform Volume Maintenance.

We take our backups to dedicated backup servers, meaning backup performance should improve significantly if instant file initialization's given to the Service account logins for the source boxes if I'm right.

How To Copy Data From Backup Or Data Files To New SQL Installation?

Dec 10, 2005

Hi,I have(had) an old Win2k Server server with about 30 web site databases(SQL 2000) that just went under due to hardware problems. Thankfully, Ihave backups of all the databases plus the MDF and LDF files from thehard drive.I want to move all of these sites and their data to a newer server(Win2003) running SQL2000.What's the best way to copy the database from the old server hard drive(now mounted as an extrnal drive to a local machine; I'm currentlyFTPing all of the web site directories from it to the new server)?Just upload the original data to the new server and then mount the MDFand LDF files within the new SQL server? Or do I restore the backupfiles in the new SQL2000?All of my previous data migrations have been DTS operations from onelive server to another, so no experience with either of the abovescenarios. I'll certainly have a lot more experience at one of them bythe time this weekend is through.Thanks for any help you can offer.

I also tried rename of file without success.
I also tried with db service stoppet (not preferred) without success.

Copy Bak, Trn Files To File Server With Robocopy.

Nov 29, 2007

I need help with better solution to copy my bak and trn files to a file server. This is the background. I use to dump the backup files directly to the file server; this was not €œbest practices€? according to some books and forums. Back to dump the file first to local disc and after that letting robocopy copy the files to the file server. And I end up with this problem.

This is error from the backup log

Robocopy tries to copy the file before its completely written to disk. I have made a batch file that looks like this
robocopy

"F:ackup" "\sefwg-sqlbackackupACON" *.* /MIR /TBD /MON:1 /MOT:5 /LOG+:"F:ackupackup.log" /NP

Monitor the file folder and copy all files every 5 min, the file is started with scheduled Task.
Have I missed some switch? Can start robocopy from SQL Serer Agent in a xp_cmd_shell?

DB Engine :: Copy Files From Source Server On Destination Server

Sep 25, 2015

I want to schedule a job which pulls files from a non SQL server (Sybase) which later needs to have a step 2 kicking the ssis package. Problem is that, on the source a batch file will run every 4 hours and outputs total of 10 text files. (takes 5 minutes complete). Now, on destination i want to pull these files via SQL job but while scheduling;

1. I don't see any option saying like 4 hours 10 minutes or so
2. If its out there, then i believe this might be a problem as this time would be an increment one e.g next run would be 4 hours 20 minutes in that case.

How should i achieve pulling these files up because we have an SSIS package on destination that needs those text files to be used as soon as they arrive on SQL server(destination)

Copy Latest Diff Backup From One Server To Another

I need to copy the last differential backup file from the production server directory to a data warehouse server directory. There are 3 differential backup files on the directory and I need to grab the latest one. I have the following syntax which work from a batch file but it does not work when I put it into a job step as a cmd even though I remove the double %% to only one %.

echo @off

set path2=K:SqlserverDatawarehouseBackupPROD
for /f "tokens=*" %%a in ('dir /b /a-d /o-d "%path1%DIFF*.bak"') do copy "%path1%\%%~a" "%path2%" & goto nextstep
:nextstep
Echo File Copied.

Even when I change it to (only one % for the variable),

for /f "tokens=*" %a in ('dir /b /a-d /o-d "%path1%DIFF*.bak"') do copy "%path1%\%~a" "%path2%"

It does not work..........It runs successfully but no file is copied or I get

Help Needed - How Can I Set Up A Backup SQL Server Machine As An Exact Copy Of My Production SQL Server

Jul 20, 2005

Any help would be greatly appreciated.My problem is that I need to set up a backup SQL Server 2000 machinewhich can be used in case of a failure to my primary. All databases(30 as of now) must be an up to the minute exact copy of productionand include most recent changes in data as well as any structurechanges (Tables, Views, SP's, Triggers, Users . . etc).When I tried this using Transactional Replication, the replicationprocess gets fouled up once I introduce any kind of structure changesto the DB. I've considered the idea of doing periodic backups andrestoring it to my backup SQL server, but this does not give me theconcurrency needed with 0 latency.I've seen articles that recommend using Transaction Replication with'Scheduled Table Refresh', and also doing database dumps to restore onthe backup machine, but I have not been able to find any documentationregarding this to try out. How can I implement this type of backupstrategy in SQL 2000?

1. connect from the studio on server C to server A
2. run the following script on server A: SELECT * FROM A.myTable FOR XML PATH('ROOT')
3. copy the result
4. connect from the studio on server C to server B
5. to write something like

DECLARE @xmlData XML;
SET @xmlData = pasting here my result from item 3 above

6. INSERT INTO
SELECT

ref.value .....
FROM @xmlData.nodes('/myElemnet/ROOT')
xmlData( ref );

so it works. now there is a requirement to schedule this update to run periodically and I need to implement it..

I have added this location to "back up to" The old one is still there. I I then hit OK th backup hangs for 2-3 minutes and gives me an error which points to the old media set. SO I want to create a  new  media set and call it  "onlyonce" but what I am not sure about is  what this Means "back up to a new media set and erase all existing backup sets"  Does that mean all old backups will be deleted?

Restoring Multiple Backup Files Simultaneously To New Server

Mar 5, 2007

Alright, here's the deal. I'm testing some backup/restore strategies, and hitting a (slight) sticking point.

We've got collections of database and log backups created by the usual maintenance plans on a 2000 Enterprise machine. I'm trying to run through a restore onto a new 2005 machine (Developer Edition on my test workstation) using the collection of .bak and .trn files copied from the 2000 server. When I try to restore to a new database on 2005 via SSMS, and select all the .bak and .trn files for the restore, I get the ol' "The volume on device '[trimmed]' is not part of a multiple family media set. BACKUP WITH FORMAT can be used to form a new media set." error.

I'm assuming this just means that SQL Server can't verify that these log backups are in fact part of a functional "set", even if they aren't part of a traditional backup media set. Is there any way to tell SSMS, "It's okay man, just restore the database from these files, in this order - trust me," or is the only solution restoring every individual log file one at a time? (Which seems to work fine, though is a tremendous pain with any more than a few log backups.) Seems like there ought to be a good one-shot method to restore a bunch of backups to a different server, and I'm just not finding it.
