SQL 2012 :: Include Columns In Index That Are In Where Clause / Select List And Join

Jun 2, 2014

Usually it is better to include the columns in the index that are in where clause, select list and join.I am thinking that the columns in the selected list is better to keep as index columns and the columns that are in the where clause is better to keep in key columns.Where do we use join column is it better to create as main key column or included column.

'Include Clause' In Create Index Syntax

Mar 26, 2008

What is the equivalent for INCLUDE clause (in Create index syntax) in SQL Server 2000.
SQL Server 2005 will support Include clause in Create index syntax . How to attain it in SQL Server 2000

Example : I have below query executable in SQL Server 2005

CREATE INDEX Index_Name ON mytable(col1 ASC) INCLUDE (name,id);

What is the equivalent for the above query in SQL server 2000

Thanks ,

System SP That Will Retrieve Index Include Columns?

Jan 30, 2008

Hi,

SQL Server 2005 has a new very useful feature for creating non-clustered indexes called INCLUDE <columns> which are very helpful when trying to create covering indexes.

Does anyone know of a way to retrieve these INCLUDE columns through any of the system metadata tables? The sp_helpIndex stored procedure is what I currently use but that only returns the (sorted) index columns and not the include columns.

Thanks in advance,

Gordon Radley

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Include Row Values As Columns In Select Query

Apr 28, 2015

How to include row values as columns in my select query. I have a table that stores comments for different sections in a web application. In the table below, I would like display each comment as a new column. I only want one row for each record_ID.

Existing table layout

table name - tblcomments
Record_ID Comment_Section_ID Comment
1 5 Test 5 comment
1 7 Test 7 comment
2 5 New comment
2 7 Old comment
3 5 Stop
3 7 Go

Desired table layout
table name - #tempComment
Record_ID Comment_Section_5 Comment_Section_7
1 Test 5 comment Test 7 comment
2 New comment old comment
3 Stop Go

Once I figure out how to get the data in the layout above, I will need to join the table with my record table.

table name - tblRecord
Record_ID Record_Type_ID Record_Status
1 23 Closed
2 56 Open
3 67 Open
4 09 Closed
5 43 In progress

I would like to be able to join the tables in the query below for the final output.

Select r.Record_ID, r.Record_Type_ID, r.Record_Status,
c.Comment_Section_5, c.Comment_Section_7
from tblRecord r
left outer join #tempComment c
on r.record_ID = c.record_ID

How I can get the data in the desired #tempComment table layout mentioned above?

Index / Join / Where Clause Very Slow

Jul 15, 2007

Hello,

first of all, some facts of the case:

Table Master Table Dimension
ID Code Price ID Name
1 A44333 5000 1 "Scanner"
2 D442 3000 2 "Notebook"
3 D6644 4000 3 "Banana"

I join both tables on ID and search one time for ID and another time for Name. Looks like

(a)
SELECT AVG(Price) From Master JOIN Dimension ON Master.id = Dimension.id
WHERE master.id=1
AND Code like 'A44'
(b)
SELECT AVG(Price) From Master JOIN Dimension ON Master.id = Dimension.id
WHERE Name = 'Scanner'
AND Code like 'A44'

Why does query (b) take longer than query (a)? Dimension has 12 Rows and
Master has about 24M Rows.

For index I did
Create Index IX_Master_ID on Master(ID)
Create Index IX_Master_Code on Master(Code)
Create Index IX_Dimension_ID on Dimension(ID)
Create Index IX_Dimension_Name on Dimension(Name)

I noticed, that when i leave the Code like 'A44' clause, query (a) and (b) do take same time. I'm really confused. Can someone please help me out?

Thank you

Silas

Transact SQL :: ORDER BY Clause Is Ignored When A Unique Index On Criteria Columns Exist

Sep 16, 2015

In SQL 2012.A query that joins 2 table, with order by clause doesn't get sorted and the result set is not ordered. This happens when some of the columns in the where criteria are in a unique index which is the index that is used for the join between the 2 tables, and all the columns in the unique index are in the where criteria. In the query plan there is no component for sort. The work around was to drop the unique index, or change it to a non-unique index. Once this was done, the execution plan was changed to add the sort component (even when the index was changed to non-unique and the join was still using this index).

Select Statement Using Multi-list Box Values For WHERE IN SQL Clause

Jan 11, 2007

I have a gridview that is based on the selection(s) in a listbox.  The gridview renders fine if I only select one value from the listbox.  I recive this error though when I select more that one value from the listbox:
Syntax error converting the nvarchar value '4,1' to a column of data type int.  If, however, I hard code 4,1 in place of @ListSelection (see below selectCommand WHERE and IN Clauses) the gridview renders perfectly.
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSourceAll" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString %>"
SelectCommand="SELECT DISTINCT dbo.Contacts.Title, dbo.Contacts.FirstName, dbo.Contacts.MI, dbo.Contacts.LastName, dbo.Contacts.Suffix, dbo.Contacts.Dear, dbo.Contacts.Honorific, dbo.Contacts.Address, dbo.Contacts.Address2, dbo.Contacts.City, dbo.Contacts.StateOrProvince, dbo.Contacts.PostalCode FROM dbo.Contacts INNER JOIN dbo.tblListSelection ON dbo.Contacts.ContactID = dbo.tblListSelection.contactID INNER JOIN dbo.ListDescriptions ON dbo.tblListSelection.selListID = dbo.ListDescriptions.ID WHERE (dbo.tblListSelection.selListID IN (@ListSelection)) AND (dbo.Contacts.StateOrProvince LIKE '%') ORDER BY dbo.Contacts.LastName">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:Parameter Name="ListSelection" DefaultValue="1"/>
</SelectParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>
The selListID column is type integer in the database.
I'm using the ListBox1_selectedIndexChanged in the code behind like this where I've tried using setting my selectparameter using the label1.text value and the Requst.From(ListBox1.UniqueID) value with the same result:

Protected Sub ListBox1_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ListBox1.SelectedIndexChanged
Dim Item As ListItem
For Each Item In ListBox1.Items
If Item.Selected Then
If Label1.Text <> "" Then
Label1.Text = Label1.Text + Item.Value + ","
Else
Label1.Text = Item.Value + ","
End If
End If
Next
Label1.Text = Label1.Text.TrimEnd(",")
SqlDataSourceAll.SelectParameters("ListSelection").DefaultValue = Request.Form(ListBox1.UniqueID)
End Sub
What am I doing wrong here?  Thanks!

Trying To Use The Results Of A Case Statement In My Select List In My WHERE Clause?

Aug 10, 2006

I am fairly new with SQL and still learning. I have used a case statemtent for a column in my select list and want to use the results of that statement's field in my WHERE clause but it is not working for me. Here is the code I have so far:

SELECT
l.loanid,
p.investorid,
l.duedate,
case when pc.duedate >= l.duedate then pc.duedate end as RateDueDate,
pc.interestrate
FROM loan l
inner join participation p on p.loanid = l.loanid
inner join paymentchange pc on pc.loanid = l.loanid
where p.investorid = '12345' and RateDueDate is not null
order by l.loanid, pc.duedate

I want to put the results of this case statment in my where clause like highlighted above but it is not working because RateDueDate is not an actual column in the table. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Select Inner Join With Where Clause Problems

Jan 3, 2007

Hello All,

I have a question about a Select over 2 Tables,
with the Following Scenario (Not all Products (ARTICULOS) haves CARAC's on the CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS table):

Picture of the tables here:
http://www.pci-baleares.com/pantallazoSql.jpg

We have per example 7 Slots (Motherboard, CPU, VGA Card, RAM, TOWER, etc...)
When we fill the Slot with a CPU-> Then we open the Slot for VGA CARD, we do the Followin Select:

SELECT dbo.ARTICULOS.*
FROM dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS INNER JOIN
dbo.ARTICULOS ON dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO = dbo.ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO

Ok it brings up ALL Graphic Cards because they dont depends on CPU

Now we go to the Motherboard Slot
And we make the following Select to obtain the compatible Motherboards:
SELECT dbo.ARTICULOS.*

FROM dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS INNER JOIN

dbo.ARTICULOS ON dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO = dbo.ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO

WHERE

((dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.ID_CARAC = 7) AND (dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.VALOR = 'PCI-E')) AND
((ID_CARAC = 1) AND (VALOR = '775'))

We check the motherboards if they support PCI-E (because we selected a Graphic card of that, and SOCKET 775 because the CPU)

But SQL return 0 Rows, if we do the following Select:
SELECT dbo.ARTICULOS.*

FROM dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS INNER JOIN

dbo.ARTICULOS ON dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO = dbo.ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO

WHERE

((dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.ID_CARAC = 7) AND (dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.VALOR = 'PCI-E'))

OR

SELECT dbo.ARTICULOS.*

FROM dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS INNER JOIN

dbo.ARTICULOS ON dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO = dbo.ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO

WHERE

((ID_CARAC = 1) AND (VALOR = '775'))

It return Rows, it happens just if the Where clause haves more as 1 specifications...

Any solution for it? It drives me crazy :D

Thanks and regards

SQL Server 2012 :: Where Clause On Multiple Columns?

May 16, 2014

Right now I have to do something like this and it is time consuming every time I have to query a specific table...

SELECT lots_of_columns
FROM table
WHERE (column5 = '1' OR column6 = '1' OR column7 = '1' OR column8 = '1' OR column9 = '1' OR column10 = '1' OR column11 = '1' OR column12 = '1')
AND other_query_critiera_here

Typing out the OR statement gets long, time consuming and prone to errors because that first where line with all the ORs can sometimes have 20+ ORs in it. As some insight, the columns are text columns, sometimes they have data, sometimes they are NULL. Sometimes they have the same data (i.e., column5 and column6 and column12 could both have '1' as values).

Select From A List Of Tables And Columns

Nov 26, 2014

The following returns all base tables within the database of type "varchar":

Code:
SELECT TABLE_SCHEMA, TABLE_NAME, COLUMN_NAME FROM mydb.information_schema.columns
WHERE TABLE_SCHEMA = 'master' AND TABLE_CATALOG = 'mydb'
AND DATA_TYPE IN('varchar')"
AND TABLE_NAME IN(
SELECT TABLE_NAME FROM mydb.information_schema.tables
WHERE TABLE_TYPE = 'BASE TABLE' AND TABLE_CATALOG = 'mydb' AND TABLE_SCHEMA = 'master')

What I then want to do is... For each of these results:

Code:
select [COLUMN_NAME] from [TABLE_SCHEMA].[TABLE_NAME]
WHERE ID = 'test'

Is it possible to do this in one SQL command? Or do I manually have to do it for each in the list from my first query?

SQL 2012 :: Included Columns In Non-clustered Index

May 8, 2014

I am trying to tune a process that is running slowly. I analyzed the process using the Database Engine Tuning Advisor, and it recommended the creation of 3 indexes, all non-clustered:

1) ColA, include ColB
2) ColA, include ColC
3) ColA, include ColD

So... I created a single non-clustered index on:

4) ColA, include ColB, ColC, ColD

That should do the same thing, right? A look at my execution plan shows that the index I created is being scanned -- 3 times. What is puzzling me, though, is that the Database Engine Tuning Advisor is still recommending I create these 3 separate indexes, even with the index (4) that I created in existence.

If it matters, ColA, ColB, ColC and ColD are all int FKs.

I think I need to only create few if an index is covering all columns then I do not need to create more indexes for separate columns or should I create separate index as suggested?

Similarly:

CREATE INDEX [NCIX_20187_20186_TL_SRV_Stationary_Stock_Transact] ON [TL_SRV_Stationary_Stock_Transaction] ([SerialNo],[StationaryStatus]) GO
CREATE INDEX [NCIX_20189_20188_TL_SRV_Stationary_Stock_Transact] ON [TL_SRV_Stationary_Stock_Transaction] ([StationaryStatus]) INCLUDE ([SerialNo]) GO

Should I create all indexes above or use minimum number of indexes which covers all columns as mentioned in above create index statements?

I then have a table of accounts, and each account can have one to many service codes. This table also has the rate for each code.

After trying every way I could come up with I can't get a filter clauseto work with a passed variable ...I have a cursor that pulls a filter string from a table (works OK),then I want to use that filter in a second cursor, but can't get thesyntax ...@bakfilter is equal to "MISV2_db_%.BAK" before I try to open and fetchfrom the second cursor. Here is the cursor declaration:DECLARE curFiles CURSOR FORSELECT FileName, FileDateFROM DataFileWHERE (((Active)=1) AND ((FileName) LIKE '@bak_filter'))ORDER BY FileDate DESCWhat do I need to do to get it to use the string contained in@bak_filter?Thanks in advance, Jim
