View 1 Repliesis there limitation for size of file to store in db by filestream in sql server 2008?or it accept all sizes?
View 1 RepliesI am trying to enable the FileStream in SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition. I can successfully enable "Enable Filestream for Transact-SQL Access" but I am unable to enable "Enable Filestream for the file I/O access". Due to this I am unable to open the folder location of the filetable.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI need to write a process to get file size in kb and record count in a file. I was planning on writing a c# console app that takes the file path and name as a param however should i use a CLR?
I cant put a script in the ssis when it's bringing the file down because it has been deemed that we only use ssis for file consumption.
I was having interesting discussion on estimation of log file with a fellow collegue who happens to be quite knowledgable as well.
He told me if we identify the most frequently hit tables for a database and then (sum their sizes * 1.5) for OLAP we get rough estimate for disk space to be allocated for log file.
My log file size is of 5 GB, I just wanna reduce this to some extent without adopting shrinking method. So is there any way to do the same ?
View 1 Replies View Relatedfinding the database size from the backup file.I have SQL 2012 backup file, is there any way to find the estimated database size from the backup.I tried restoring , i got an error saying " no space need additional xxx bytes " ...does this error gives the exact space needed to restore ?
One more question....one of the backup file size is 7.2 GB, when i try to restore it ....it throws error saying it needs 292GB extra space while only 100 Gb is available. How come 392 Gb sized database becomes 7.2 Gb .bak file ?
I have a Problem like the Following ..
On 24th my Mdf size was 10GB,when i checked now the Mdf size was increased suddenly to 30GB.
solution to decrease the Size and as well as where can i check the reasons behind that..
Here are my scenarios:
We have an application with replicated environment setup on sql server 2012 . Users will have a replica on their machines and they will replicate to the master database. It has 3 subscriptions subscribed to the publications on the master db.
1) We set up a replica(which uses sql server 2012) on a machine with no sql server on it. After the initial synchronization(used replmerge tool) the mdf file has grown to 33gigs and ldf has grown to 41 gigs. I went to sql server management studion . Right click and checked the properties of the local database. over all size is around 84 gb with little empty free space available.
2) We set up a replica(which uses sql server 2012) on a machine with sql server 2008 on it. After the initial synchronization(used replmerge tool) the mdf file has grown to 49 gigs and ldf has grown to 41 gigs. I went to sql server management studio , Right click and checked the properties of the local database. over all size is around 90 gb with 16 gb free space available.
3) We set up a replica(which uses sql server 2012) on a machine with sql server 2012 on it. We have dropped the local database and recreated the local db and did the initial synchronization using replmerge tool. The mdf file has grown to 49 gigs and ldf has grown to 41 gigs. I went to sql server management studio , Right click and checked the properties of the local database. over all size is around 90 gb with 16 gb free space available.
Why it is allocating the space differently? This is effecting our initial replica set up times.
I need to increase the file size for a mirrored database. I am new to using mirroring for replication. Will increasing the file size break the mirror?

View 5 Replies View RelatedHello all,
I was trying to run a test to write a ebcdic file out with a comp - 3 number (testing this for other people) and have run into a problem writing the string out to the flat file destination. I have the following script component:
Code Block
' Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services user script component
' This is your new script component in Microsoft Visual Basic .NET
' ScriptMain is the entrypoint class for script components
Imports System
Imports System.Data
Imports System.Math
Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.Wrapper
Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper
Public Class ScriptMain
Inherits UserComponent
Public Overrides Sub CreateNewOutputRows()
'
' Add rows by calling AddRow method on member variable called "Buffer"
' E.g., MyOutputBuffer.AddRow() if your output was named "My Output"
'
Output0Buffer.AddRow()
Dim myByteArray() As Byte = {&H12, &H34, &H56, &H7F}
Output0Buffer.myByteStream = myByteArray
Output0Buffer.myString = "ABCD"
Output0Buffer.myString2 = "B123"
myByteArray = Nothing
End Sub
End Class
I have added myByteStream as a DT_BYTES length 4, myString as (DT_STR, 4, 37) and myString2 as (DT_STR, 4, 37) to the output 0 buffer.
I then add a flat file destination with code set 37 (ebcdic us / canda) with the corresponding columns using fixed width.
When i place a dataviewer on the line between the two the output looks as I expect ("0x12 0x34 0x56 0x7F", "ABCD", "B123"). However, when it gets to the flat file destination it errors out with the following:
Code Block
[Flat File Destination [54]] Error: Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "myByteStream" returned status value 4 and status text "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page.".
If i increase the size of the byte stream (say, to 50) the error goes away but I am left with the string "1234567F" instead of the appropriate hex values. Any clues on how to go about this? I obviously don't care if it gets transferred to "readable" text as this is supposed to be a binary stream, thus the no match in target page seems superfulous but is probably what is causing the problems.
NOTE: this is relating to the following thread (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2300539&SiteID=1) in that I am trying to determine why these people are not seeing the "UseBinaryFormat" when importing an EBCDIC file (i see this fine when i use an ftp'd file, but it auto converts to ascii) with comp-3 values. I also see the "UseBinaryFormat" when I am importing a regular EBCDIC file which I create that has no import errors with zoned decimals.
I have a log file that is approximately 50 GIG. I backed up just the log and the file size of the .bak is 192 GIG . Why is this? Shouldn't it be closer to the 50 GIG.
Normally I wouldn't let log grow this much. But we are in process of getting new server up and running and don't have backups going yet. They are working on getting that up and running this week.
So I did a log backup to give me back some log space for now but was concerned when I saw the size of the .bak file.
When I view media contents of the backup device it shows one tranaction log back up and size of 192 GIG.
What is up with this. I know in SQL 2000 the log backup files where never this big. they were about the size of the log itself.
Any ideas?
Stacy
I was putting a database together (its a C# application MSSQL)  the application will handle a few hundred customers records and save  maybe a couple of thousand  word docs/images/other doc files wondered if the way to go was blob or filestream, I see the medium and larger databases seem to go for filestream but just wondered as not much mentioned about smaller dbs.I do not think  security/disk space/super fast access  will be a big issue.

Any help with this process?
What is the recommended size and file growth for a database and log file? We will be storing approx 10000 records a day.Currently we have the following:

We have 2 SQL Server 2k5 servers running the same build - 9.0.2047 . When I backup any database from one server and attempt to restore it to the other, the log file generally increases by 100 fold. It errors out after I try to restore a 100MB db and it tries to create a 9.8GB log file. This happens both when I use the GUI to restore and when I restore from a T-SQL script. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.

I installed sql 2005 a while back. Then I recently found out my file system was fat32 (I don't understand why the hardware people did this...) and I had to convert to NTFS. Naturally the sql service no longer worked so I uninstalled inorder to reinstall now I can't reinstall it I keep getting this message
native_error=5039, msg=[Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]MODIFY FILE failed. Specified size is less than current size.
I'll try to post the full log in a new post.
I need find out the number of columns in flat file before i process that particular file.I have file name in @filename variable and file path is @filepath variable.But do not not that how i will check the column name in before i will process that file.
@filePath = C:DatabaseSourceFilesCAHCVSSourceFiles
And i am using for each loop container to read the file one by one and put the file name in @filename variable.and my file name like
Product_20120607060930.txt
Product_20130708060930.txt
[code]....
Now what i have to do is i need to make sure that ID,Name,City,County,Phone is there in flat file.if it is not there then i have to send mail to client saying that file is not valid.I need to also calculate the size of flat file.
The TEMPDB transaction log file keeps growing.The database server is new and the transaction log was presized to 1 GB on installation. After installing a number of databases, the log file grew over a day to 38GB. Issuing a manual checkpoint was the only way to free some space to allow it to be shrunk back to a usable size. The usage of the file is still going up.
I am struggling to find what process is causing the log to be used so heavily. Looking at the log reuse wait desc for tempdb returns "Nothing" and tempdb itself isn't being used very much or growing in size.
I have a filetable that contains a binary file. I need to do a selective read of the file stored in the file table. I can write a C# CLR function that will open the file, read n bytes the from a starting byte. Or I can write a SQL statement that reads the stream in the filetable into a VARBINARY variable using SUBSTRING beginning at the starting byte (offset from 1) for the same n bytes.
Both give me the same result. However, the SQL statement takes considerably longer to read. I know there is overhead in reading through SQL (interpreted language), but the difference in performance is substantial, and I can only attribute this performance degradation if SQL first tries to "load" the entire stream before it identifies the portion of the stream that it needs to read beginning at the starting byte offset.
I wonder if this is the case or if there is another option to read a stream from a filetable directly through SQL queries that is more efficient.
Why shrinkfile empty file does not redistribute data evenly in the primary file group with multiple files:
Please run the script attached to see what the end result is.
This is what I set up last night on my test machine.
1) Create database [FGTest] size 200MB
2) Create table called TEST on primary
3) Insert 40MB of data into test
4) Create another file group called temp in primary size 200MB
5) Shrinkfile('FGTest',emptyfile) so that all data is transfered from FGTest into temp file group.
6) Add another 2 files called DATA2 and DATA3. Both are 200MB.
7) We now have 3 empty files that I want data distributed evenly on. FGTest, DATA2 & DATA3
8) Shrinkfile('temp',emptyfile) to move all the data from temp over the 3 file groups evenly
I would expect at this stage to have the following:
FGTest = 13MB,
DATA2 = 13MB,
DATA3 = 13MB
(40MB of data over 3 files should be about 13 MBish in each file)
What I actually end up with is this:
FGTest = 20MB
DATA1 = 10MB
DATA2 = 10MB
It looks as though SQL Server is allocating 50% of all data to the original file and then 50% evenly over
the remaining files in PRIMARY.
I have one db test with one .mdf and .ldf file...mdf file size is 100mb and for some reson i removed all the tablesfrom that .mdf file and transfer it into new secondary file so all thetables moved into secondary file now i want to reduce the first .mdffile from 100 mb to 50mb is that possible,it's showing 90mb is free.Please reply
View 1 Replies View RelatedWe have a large 'History' database that is currently about 4.5TB, with most of that in a datafile that is 4.2TB. We wanted to stop growth on the one large data file and have SQL Server allocate new data to the other data files, but this throws an error when we attempt to change the MAXSIZE settings:
ALTER failed for Database 'History'
MODIFY FILE failed. Specified size is less than or equal to current size.
The SQL Server is saying we can have a max size of 2TB, and anything over that is blocked. Since this is being blocked, the file continues to grow.
Is there any way to cap the growth of the 4.2TB file and not allow any more data to be written to it?
I've read the other posts related to this issue, but I'm just REALLY confused as to whats happening in my case. Like everyone else it was working fine in SQL 2000 but now in SQL 2005 there is an issue. I'm calling a stored procedure with parameters defined like this:
@action varchar(10),
@GLTransactionID int = NULL OUTPUT ,
@GLBatchID int = NULL ,
@GLAccountID int = NULL ,
@CurrencyID int = NULL ,
@LocalDebit decimal(28, 13) = NULL ,
@LocalCredit decimal(28, 13) = NULL ,
@BaseDebit decimal(28, 13) = NULL ,
@BaseCredit decimal(28, 13) = NULL ,
@TransID int =NULL,
@Description varchar(255) = NULL
I am calling this proc from VS.NET 2003 using the .Net SqlClient Data Povider (C#). I'm setting the values of the parameters like this:
cm.Parameters.Add("@action", "insert");
cm.Parameters.Add("@GLBatchID", _gLBatchID.DBValue);
cm.Parameters.Add("@GLAccountID", _gLAccountID.DBValue);
cm.Parameters.Add("@CurrencyID", _currencyID.DBValue);
cm.Parameters.Add("@LocalDebit", _localDebit.DBValue);
cm.Parameters.Add("@LocalCredit", _localCredit.DBValue);
cm.Parameters.Add("@BaseDebit", _baseDebit.DBValue);
cm.Parameters.Add("@BaseCredit", _baseCredit.DBValue);
cm.Parameters.Add("@TransID", _transID.DBValue);
cm.Parameters.Add("@Description", _description.DBValue);
When I execute the call to the stored proc I get this:
"The incoming tabular data stream (TDS) remote procedure call (RPC) protocol stream is incorrect. Parameter 8 ("@BaseDebit"): The supplied value is not a valid instance of data type numeric. Check the source data for invalid values. An example of an invalid value is data of numeric type with scale greater than precision."
Using the VS.NET command window I then inspect that parameter to see what the heck is going on and get this:
?cm.Parameters["@BaseDebit"].SqlDbType
Decimal
?cm.Parameters["@BaseDebit"].Precision
0
?cm.Parameters["@BaseDebit"].Scale
22
?cm.Parameters["@BaseDebit"].DbType
Decimal
?cm.Parameters["@BaseDebit"].Value
1000000
[System.Decimal]: 1000000
So I set a decmial parameter to 1,000,000, that parameter in the DB is defined as decimal(28,13) so should fit no problem, but it seems the Sql data provider is confused and thinks 1,000,000 is decimal (0,22)???
I receive this error when I make a depolyment to our new server(virtual server).
The report works fine in the report manager. In my application, I use RenderStream method to retrieve the images and embed in the webform. I googled it and found some people having the same issue because of the cookie, so they set 'UseSessionCookies' = false in the table ConfiurationInfo of ReportServer database. I tried this, but no luck.
Also, there is a hotfix from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913363.
I have requested a copy, but not sure whehter it's gonna be helpful.
Any clues or suggestions weclome.
Thanks
