SQL 7 Uncontrolled Table Size Growth !!!
Jun 22, 2001
We have a nightly application that when run during SQL Backup caused a single table in a 7GB database to increase to 13GB. Total database size reached 20GB when the disk array ran out of space. Table only contained 661,000 records and should have been less than 100MB.
Recently we have moved from SP1 to SP3.

:eek: I am somewhat confused -- I have a database in production that I restored to a QA environment; upon restore, the size has grown by 200MB.
Both production and QA are running SQL2000 -- the only difference is that QA has the latest security hotfixes installed -- version 8.0.0.665 from KB article at the following link:

We have a problem with the size of the tempdb.mdf file. The tempdb had grown to 25Gb and consumed all the available disk space. SQL server was restarted and the tempdb was reset back to the default size. The following day the tempdb suddenly increased in size from 200mb to 25GB within a very short space of time. There were a couple of event log entries from sqlservger regarding the lack of disk. Since then the server is running without any problems but the level of free space is virtually zero on the drive with tempdb.mdf file.
What would cause the tempdb to grow suddenly and to this size?
Can I control the size the tempdb can grow to?

I'm aware of the issues with sizing your logfile growth size too low (causing too many VLFs, etc). But I haven't seen much about the datafile side of it.
Are there any benchmarks specifically on setting datafile growth so low (on databases 1-100Gb in size)? Are there circumstances in well utilized servers where that might be warranted?

Any good starting point to understand for a specific db, how many max VLFs are good to have so that it does not cause long startup or backup times?
Also, I need some calculation so that I can identify a best growth parameter I will setup for each database ?
I'm seeing the below msg in errorlog and curious to know the changes (right sizing/growth) to be done? As of now 100 MB of log file growth value is set (refer: [URL] ....)
Database BizTalkMsgBoxDb has more than 1000 virtual log files which is excessive. Too many virtual log files can cause long startup and backup times. Consider shrinking the log and using a different growth increment to reduce the number of virtual log files.

The transaction log of a database grows until it runs out of disk space. If disk space is full, all databases on instance may get problems. Because of this i have set a limitation on how much it may grow, up to 40 GB. It grows in steps of 100 MB. It reaches its limit a couple of times a week, causing the application to hang.
The database file itself is about 2,3 GB large.
The SQL version is 10.50.4276, SQL2008R2 SP2.
The recovery model is FULL.
I have a backupjob that runs a FULL Backup at midnight.And a backupjob that runs a LOG backup every 30 minutes.Both finishes with success. However, the transaction log is never truncated, the unused space is never released.
I have checked for "long running jobs", it sometimes sys "backup_log", sometimes "active_transaction".
Could a workaround be to set the recovery mode to simple, and create a full-backup job that runs every 30 minutes for this database? It is a critical database....

What is the recommended size and file growth for a database and log file? We will be storing approx 10000 records a day.Currently we have the following:
CREATE DATABASE Dummy
ONÂ
PRIMARY
( NAME = Dummy_data,
  FILENAME = 'D:....DATADummy.mdf',
  SIZE = 250MB,
  FILEGROWTH = 25MB )
LOG ON
( NAME = Dummy_log,
  FILENAME = 'D:....DATADummy_log.ldf',
  SIZE = 50MB,
  FILEGROWTH = 5MB ) ;

I am monitoring the data file growth of the databases in a table. Every week I review to see how much space is left on each database. I am thinking of writing a query where the current free space left is less than 20% of the file size, it sends out an alert to me, so that I can manually resize the file . Is it a good practice to resize the data file manually? If so I believe this need to be done at the time when the server is least busy since it can slow down the database. Also do I need to re-index the tables once the data file is resized?

Hi,
i use this script that show me the size of each table and do the sum of all the table size.
SELECT
X.[name],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[rows]), 1), '.00', '') AS [rows],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[reserved]), 1), '.00', '') AS [reserved],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[data]), 1), '.00', '') AS [data],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[index_size]), 1), '.00', '') AS [index_size],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[unused]), 1), '.00', '') AS [unused]
FROM
(SELECT
CAST(object_name(id) AS varchar(50)) AS [name],
SUM(CASE WHEN indid < 2 THEN CONVERT(bigint, [rows]) END) AS [rows],
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, reserved)) * 8 AS reserved,
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, dpages)) * 8 AS data,
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, used) - CONVERT(bigint, dpages)) * 8 AS index_size,
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, reserved) - CONVERT(bigint, used)) * 8 AS unused
FROM sysindexes WITH (NOLOCK)
WHERE sysindexes.indid IN (0, 1, 255)
AND sysindexes.id > 100
AND object_name(sysindexes.id) <> 'dtproperties'
GROUP BY sysindexes.id WITH ROLLUP) AS X
ORDER BY X.[name]
the problem is that the sum of all tables is not the same size when i make a full database backup.
example of this is when i run this query against my database i see a sum of 111,899 KB that they are 111MB,but when
i do full backup to that database the size of this full backup is 1.5GB,why is that and where this size come from?

I am trying to resize a database initial log file from 500M to 2M. I€™m using€?
ALTER DATABASE <DBNAME> MODIFY FILE ( NAME = <DBLOGFILENAME, SIZE = 2 ) "
And I'm getting "MODIFY FILE failed. Specified size is less than current size." I tried going into the database properties and setting the log file to 2M, but it doesn€™t keep the changes.
Any help with this process?

I have some question and would like ask experts:
The largest table in our database eats up above 4G . we do "sp_spaceused" for this table.The length of all columns of this table ( just int, char, varchar, money ,numeric fields types) is about 200 bytes, and the table has around 1,300,000 rows, but the reserved spaced for this table is 4,800,000kb and the data space is around 4,600,00kb.
How can average each row take 3.7kb ( the total size of all columns just 200 bytes)? Any other things I need check?
Any one can give any suggestion what cause this problem? or it is normal?
Thank you very much.

Is there a practical size limit, in MB's, of a table in SQL Server 6.5?
Is there a size, that once exceeded, degrades performance signifigantly?
I am speaking of raw megabytes. The table in question will consist of only 3 int columns but has the possiblity of becoming VERY LARGE (+1,000,000 rows). I am still in the design phase and can change my strategy if this will prove to be a problem.
Thanks for any help!

hello all,
I am trying to solve this problem for quite some time.. I was wondering if I can get some help..
These questions are all abt. MSSQL 6.5
1. Is there a limit on the size of the table ?
2. Does it make sense to have more tables if the size of the row size is more that the limit set by 6.5 or i should let have more rows in a different table with duplicate entries for a particular field.
3. What is the number of rows before the performance of a query starts getting affected..
Thanks..
Sachin.

Is there a maximum or optimum number of rows I should have in a table so that I can have fastest search queries. I am a novice programmer just developed something for my work place.
The database has a table created by converting data from excel spreadsheets. There were 24 spreadsheets for 12 months each having approximately 500 rows. Designed this way the table will have approximately 24 * 500 = 12000 records. Should I consider redesigning the database to make searches faster

When I execute "sp_spaceused" it returns the following parameters for a table
