SQL Agent Auto-restart Problems
May 31, 2001
Morning,
I set up SQL Agent to start up on a domain account with Administrator rights, and the
auto-restart option is on. However, the agent does not restart automatically when restarting
SQL Server. No problems restarting manually. The Event Viewer logs the following:
"SQLServerAgent security context does not have server-autorestart privileges."
Any ideas on how to diagnose this?
Thanks,
Sergio

I'm trying to figure out a way to automatically restart the SQL Agent service when an AG fails over to a secondary node. I've created a job on each AG node that runs every 15 seconds and detects when a fail over has happened. It then issues a SQL Agent stop command and then a SQL Agent start command. The problem is that once the stop command happens the start command never fires because the SQL Agent is now stopped.

Hello everyone! We had an issue this week where SQL Server Agent did not restart automatically. Weekly maintenance runs on the server each Sunday in which a reboot of the server occurs. Both SQL Server and SQL Server Agent are set to auto-start when OS starts. SQL started fine, but SQL Server Agent didn't.
Anyone know of a reason why SQL Server Agent wouldn't have restarted? Also, does anyone know of a way to set something up that would alert me (through email) if this service hasn't restarted?
Thanks in advance,
Lance

Hi Experts,
I have a table with fields:
remindWHO remindWHEN remindWHATsomeone@test.com 6/20/05 do blah blah
I want SQL Server Agent automatically run every morning at 1:00 AM, check against "remindWHEN" date, if match with current date, send out email to "remindWHO" for what they need to do in "remindWHAT"
I was told this can be done by using the "Jobs" feature under SQL Server Agent to do this, but I don't know how to write Transact-SQL-Script under "Job Step".
Please help me. Or any better alternative?I appreciate for any help.

I am not successful in getting SQL Server Agent to startup when SQL server starts up.
I believe the problem has to do with a lack of permissions or rights. I will list the steps
below which seem to me to be all that are needed to install SQL Server Agent. I used
Enterprise Manager to get this information.
If anyone can shoot any holes in the process, please do, that may be where my
problem lies.
a. Created NT accounts called MSSQLSERVER for the server and MSSQLSERVERAGENT
for SQL Agent.
b. Each of these accounts has the "right" to logon as a service.
c. Each of these accounts has "admin" rights.
d. Each of these accounts has been added to SQL SERVER under Security and Logins.
e. The properties assigned to each of the accounts are:
(1) on the general tab -- Windows NT authentication is in effect, database is master
and language is English (2) on the server roles tab -- System Administrators is checked
(3) on the database access tab -- the master database is checked
f. Under SQL Server Agent, properties, selecting the General Tab, in the frame
titled "service startup account":
(1) the circle labelled "this account" is clicked (2) the account is filled in using
domain namemssqlserveragent (3) the correct password is filled in taking case
into consideration
g. Under SQL Server Agent, properties, selecting the Connection Tab, in the frame
titled "sql server connection":
(1) the circle labelled "use windows NT authentication" is clicked
h. Right clicking the server and selecting properties show a multi-tab window
(1) the general tab shows that all three autostart boxes are checked
(2) the security tabs shows SQL Server and Windows authentication are in effect
(3) the startup service account shows "this account" selected and the account
is filled in with domain namemssqlserver and the password is filled in (taking
case into consideration)
In all cases above, the domain name is not the domain in which the server resides,
but is in a "trusted" domain.
Any help would be very much appreciated!!!!!

Whenever I restart the Sql Server Agent, it causes SQL Server to restart also - is this correct ? I thought the dependency was the other way around i.e. restarting SQL Server would cause the agent to restart ? Any insights gratefully accepted.

Since upgrading from SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2, I've noticed that it no longer autosaves queries that have not been manually saved first. If a file has been manually saved the autorecover files end up in the following directory:
%appdata%MicrosoftSQL Server Management Studio11.0AutoRecoverDatSolution1
However, I have ended up in the situation where I have unsaved queries when my computer has crashed and have not been able to recover them.
I have also found references to .sql files stored in temp files in the following directory, but the files here seem to be very haphazardly caught:
%userprofile%AppDataLocalTemp

when I run a package from a command window using dtexec, the job immediately says success.
DTExec: The package execution returned DTSER_SUCCESS (0).
Started: 3:37:41 PM
Finished: 3:37:43 PM
Elapsed: 2.719 seconds
However the Job is still in th agent and the status is executing. The implications of this are not good. Is this how the sql server agent job task is supposed to work by design.
Thanks,
Larry

Hi All,
I would appreciate any help here at all. I am pulling my hair out!
I am unable to start the snapshot agent or log reader agent from within SQL management studio. it fails on executing step 2 with unknown username or bad password.
I have checked all account details and they are correctly using my domain admin account. I can connect to SQL using teh same account and it also has sysadmin permissions.
If i copy the step 2 paramters and start from the cmd prompt (again logged in using the same domain account) they both start fine.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.

I am testing peer to peer replication in our environment. I simulated a three node peer to peer topology and a local distributor.
For some wierd reason I cannot get the Log Reader Agent and snapshot agent to start. The domain account under which SQL Server Agent runs has administrator previlage on the box. I also use a domain account for SQL Server Service. (none of the passwords changed).
This is the error I am getting - "Executed as user: abc. A required privilege is not held by the client. The step failed"
Any ideas???
Also this domain account is a member of
SQLServer2005MSSQLUsers$ServerName$MSSQLSERVER
SQLServer2005MSAgentUser$ServerName$MSSQLSERVER

This started as an annoyance that has start to become a real problem. I am accessing a file that can be read with OLE DB that I am interrogating and inserting its records into a SQL Server database. The problem is that sometimes this will stop working, and requires a server reboot. The error that comes back is Microsoft.Jet... an error has occurred... Has anyone else had this similar problem, and how were you able to solve it?
Thanks in advance...

Maybe a 'dumb' question, but I can't figure it out. I can't tell from the logs since they are periodically truncated, so how can I tell when the system was last restarted?
I would like to know the period of time that a dmv has been updating a particular view.
Your help is most appreciated.

I have a package that uses checkpoint restart. It is resposible for truncatings many sets of tables and then loading them. There are several ExecuteSQL tasks to truncate the tables and several corresponding data flows to accomplish the loads.
If a load fails I want the corresponding truncate task to be part of the restart otherwise duplicate data may be loaded. Normally, SSIS will start at the failed task. I read something about containers that led me to think that if I put the truncate & matching load pair in a sequence container that the container would be the restart point, but either I read it wrong or it's not working that way.
Anybody know how to accomplish what I want to do?

Has anyone ever experienced the SQL Server unexpectedly rebooting?
Yesterday my SQL Server 7 installation rebooted itself and the error log seemed fine as did the restart. The only evidence I can find was a message in the event viewer's application log stating the the MSSQLServer service terminated unexpectedly. Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks,

We are using NT 4.0 + 6.5 + Microfocus Netexpress
After the server is booted, our application flies.
After some days ( 1 to 3), the performance starts to degrade until it reaches an unbearable sluggishness. Teh degradation is not continuous, but it shows with time spans (which vary from 1 to 5 hours) during which everything is unacceptably slow. This time spans are usually longer each time they present themselves. There are no errors and if given the time (unacceptable) every workstation finishes its tasks properly.
If we stop the server and reboot it, everything comes back to the initial excellent performance and the cycle of degradation starts over again.
The hardware is excellent and we have checked almost everything that came into our minds, with no results.
Does anyone have any previous similar experiences ?
Does anyone have any ideas on where we should focus our search ?
We are migrating the application into 7.0 but I am afraid that our nightmares might continue
I would appreciate all the advice you could give me. Thank you
Elias

If the only way to truncate the tempdb fully is to stop SQLServer, how often should this be done? OK I know it depends on your system and the amount of up time, but...
Is there a better way of truncating the tempdb, without stopping SQLServer?
Thanks, Neil.

Hi,
I have a linked server set up to a proprietarty temporal DB through an OLEDB provider. From time to time and for various reasons the OLEDB provider crashes with "Error 7302 Could not create an instance of OLE DB Provider 'IhOLEDBProvider.iHistorian.1'. OLE DB Trace [Non Interface Error: CoCreate of DSO for IhOLEDBProvider.iHistorian.1 returned 0x80070008"
Up till now, to re-initilize the connection we have just restarted the SQL Server service. However, some automated processes are now feeding data into this server and more users and have started coming online so restarting for this issue has become a big deal.
Getting the OLEDB provider sorted out isn't an option at present so my question is:
Is there a way to re-initalise a failed linked server other that restarting the SQL Service?
Thanks,
Eamon.

Hi,
I've got a table with a column that contains the status of available licenses to the user, i.e. they are either in use or are available. If the server goes down, then when it is restarted I need to make sure all the rows in this column describe each license as being available.
So the question is how can I ensure data in a table is, if you like, initialized, each time the server is restarted? Is there a system defined stored proc or trigger than is executed when a server is restarted?
Thanks.
