SQL Database Administration Tool

Jun 26, 2005

Hi...

Does anybody know of an open source script I can download that will enable me to manage an SQL database? I basically need to access and modify the database from any machine that may not have SQL Enterprise Manager Installed. I was thinking of writing my own script to do this but I assumed that there is probably already one out there.

Error Using Web Site Administration Tool

Mar 7, 2007

I am getting the following error using the Web Site Administration
Tool. I have created the database I want to use. Please
help.Could not establish a connection to the database.
If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site
Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to
create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set
the provider.

The utility either is not working or I do not know how to use it.

I have SQL 2005 Express and SQL 2000. SQL 2000 is working
properly, not sure about SQL 2005. I have been told to use SQL
2000 because that is what our server is using. I am developing on
my server and when application works will port to our server.

ASP .NET Web Site Administration Tool Problem

Sep 13, 2007

Hi,I have a problem when I use ASP .NET Web Application Administration tool. When I click the Security tab, I receive following message"There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an

be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below

Auth Problem To SQL In Web Administration Tool

Apr 30, 2008

I am trying to set up the web administration for a website that uses login controls. I have set up the ASPNETDB database using the regular aspnet_regsql command on my SQLEXPRESS.

To set up the web admin tool, I created a vdir to point to %WINDIR%Microsoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727ASP.NETWebAdminFiles. This works absolutely fine. I also changed the configuration of this website to use the ASPNETDB on my SQLEXPRESS.

<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="data source=.SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=aspnetdb"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

This website also has impersonation enabled

<identity impersonate = "true" />

The administration website works fine till I click on the security tab, and I get the following error:

Cannot open database "aspnetdb" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'HOMEASPNET'

What I don't understand is why the application is using the ASPNET account to connect to the database when impersonation is enabled. Isn't it supposed to use the credentials of the windows user? I read a couple of posts on MSDN which advise to explicitly create a login for the ASPNET user in the ASPNETDB database (which will definitely work) but somehow it seems counter-intuitive to me. Any advise anyone?

SQL Server Express && Web Administration Tool

Nov 28, 2007

I am new to VWD, and web development. I installed VWD and SQL Server Express local.

I'm learning how to use the VWD with some of the walkthrough samples. It was going great until I got to the walkthrough where it show "how to use configure user and role with Web Site Admin Tool". I followed the walkthrough steps by step. I clicked the Security Tab and I got the following error:

"There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store. The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database. "

I read some article. According to the articles, SQL Server Express will automatically create the asp database for the first time. but my SSE did not create the database.

What did you do wrong? Please help. Thank you

SQL Server 2005 Express And ASP.NET Web Site Administration Tool Problem.

Mar 31, 2006

I installed SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, I can login to it just fine using SQL Server Management Studio Express. I ran the aspnet_regsql and it created the aspnetdb database. But when I try to test the AspNetMembershipProvider or go to the Security tab in the ASP.NET Web Site Administration Tool it does not work. I have tried messing with the connectionString of the LocalSqlServer in the machine.config, but to no avail. My SQL Server is installed on the Default Instance. Can someone help me get ASP.NET Web Site Administrator to work with my SQL Server 2005 Express Edition?

Duplicate Data Entry When Using The ASP.NET Web Site Administration Tool For Logins

Nov 5, 2007

Hello All,

I am using the Web Site Administration Tool with the ASP.NET login controls to create/manage user logins & roles for my site.

I have exported the ASPNETDB.MDF into my SQL Database ready to use with my app. The problem that I'm having is that whenever I add a user, using either the Web Site Administration Tool or the Classes available in the code-behind. The entry is doubled up in the database.

This is not a problem when logging on....however, when it comes to deleting a user it will only take one of the entries out and leave the duplicate in there. So if the administrator has deleted a user from the app and then tried to create another one with the same UserName (Which whomever is well within his/her rights to be able to do), they cannot because the entry which has "stay behind" in the database conflicts with the entry.

Any help on this matter would be greatly apprieciated. If any more info on this matter is required please ask (It was quite hard to try and explain this :-)

Database Administration Survey

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,We are a systems research group at the Computer Science departmentatRutgers University, and are conducting a survey to understand detailsabout network, systems and database administration. We hope that thisinformation would help us recreate a realistic environment to helpresearch in 'systems management'.We request network, systems, and database administrators to take thissurvey. As an incentive, all surveys completed in their entirety willbeentered into a drawing of a number of $50 gift certificates (fromAmazon.com).We hope you have a few minutes to take the survey which is located at:http://vivo.cs.rutgers.edu/administration_survey.htmlResearch in our group:The goal of our research is to improve the overall availability andmaintainability of services. Since administrators form an integral partof these services, a key aspect of this work is to build environmentsand tools that ease the task of service administration. In particular, environments which would help administrators know how their actionsmight impact the real service (before performing them for real), webelieve would be useful in preventing inadvertent actions. This surveytries to understand the existing environments, what administrators docurrently to test the 'validity' of their actions, and the difficultiesthey face in doing so. The two specific systems we are looking at arenetworks and databases, as we believe these are important components ofmany services. If you have any questions regarding this survey or our work, feel freeto email us:Fabio Oliveira (fabiool at cs || rutgers || edu), orKiran Nagaraja (knagaraj at cs || rutgers || edu)Thanks for your time,Fabio OliveiraPhD student, Vivo Research Group (http://vivo.cs.rutgers.edu)Rutgers University

Sql Server Database Administration Web Application

Sep 10, 2006

Hi All, I will shortly (hopefully) begin devleoping an ASP.Net web application to let users manage a remote sql server 2005 database (kind of like the php myAdmin tool for MySQL databases). Were not talking a server managament tool for DBAs, more an end user tool for managing personal databases (it seems that web hosting companies provide tools for MySQL, but if you use SQL Server, you're stuck unless you have management tools on your PC - and what about mac users?).Given that premise, what features should i attempt to include? Creating and modifying tables structures and data is an obvious inclusion, but what else? I also haven't yet decided whether to go about this using scripts or using SMO. I've read that SMO is backwards compatible across versions of SQL Server...how true is this? are there issues or is it seamless? Please post any comments or thoughts you have, and thanks for taking the time.

Database Administration/Maintenance - Guidance Needed

May 16, 2006

I have been working SQL server for many years as a web developer, however in my current position we are lacking an expert in maintenance and admninistration as the company has recently switched over to SQL Server 2005.

I therefore need to develop a greater understanding of the best practices with regards to administration and am a bit lost as there are so many options which seem like they might match my requirements. As I have never looked beyond the basic administration/maintenance side of things before I have no idea which options to investigate.

Basically I want to clear any records older than 3 months old on a scheduled/automatic basis. There seem to be various options that could do this, however I want to know what the best option is, rather than waste a lot of time and risk problems by resorting to trial and error.

We are already backing up this data, however I am not sure if I should combine these tasks. It is highly unlikely that we will ever have to restore these older records, however we do need to store the data for legal reasons.

I dont expect anyone to tell me everything, as I am happy to investigate, I just need a nudge in the right direction.

Thanks

Database Diagrams Tool

Jun 26, 2006

When I use the sql 2005 "Database Diagrams" tool for the first time I always get the message: "The Database does not have one or more of the support objects required to use database diagramming. Do you wish to create them?"

1. Does anyone know what the " support objects" referred to are?

2. Why SQL doesn't automatically create these support objects for me? (e.g. do they require a lot of hard disk space so they shouldn't routinely be created?)

3. Is there any way to make Sql automatically create them?

If you can address any of these points I'd appreciate it.

What Tool To View SSCE Database?

Mar 11, 2008

What tool should I use to view SQL Server Compact Edition database?

I have VS2008 Professional, but I didn't find any tool in the installation. So I tried to install the SQL Server Developer Edition, which is included in the VS2008 package, but the installation has quit saying the that there is nothing to upgrade (there is probably newer version of SQL installed by VS2008 itself).

I also tried to download and install SQL Server Managment Studio Express. The installation went well, but then I wasn't able to select any SSCE database (there was only SQL Server Express or something like that selectable).

Is there anything else I should do?

Tool To Create Small Database With MSDE

May 12, 2004

Hi,

I'm a newbie with SQL so excuse my igorance. I'm running an application that uses MSDE2000 as its source db and would like to create a small [10 field] db that would also use MSDE. I want to use a separate db though and not share the first one. What I'm looking for is suggestions on a development tool to create the database with as I'm not familiar with SQL tools. I have a lot of Access experience though so the concepts are not new.

Database requirements are pretty basic.

10 fields [8 text, 2 numeric]
A button field to Add New Record
A search field
Column sorting.

That's it. I could do this in a pinch with Access so knowing what tool to use should make it easy. Any chance that I could do it with Access and then port it to a SQL db?

Thanks,
Bob

Need Tool For Managing Database Object Ownership
