SQL DateTime Limit = Enemy Of Historical Based Websites
Jun 18, 2007
I'm trying to create a website based on interesting historical facts, Searchable by date. I need each fact entry to have a datetime field in the database, but unfortunately this method only lets me go as far back as the year 1753 (for an inexplicable reason, I can go up to the year 9999).
Is there something I'm overlooking here, or did Microsoft goof this one? Will I have to store my dates as 3 separate custom month/day/year fields? If anybody has a solution for this, please let me know (a B.C./A.D enabled solution isn't at all needed, but I'm open to that too).

I am a newbie to SQL Server.
I have a problem, in filtering the records returned by a query.
I have a table which contains 1 million records, it has a user defined primary key which is of character type.
The problem is i need to filter the output of a select query on the table based on two parameters i send to that query.
The first parameter will be the starting row number and the second one is the ending row number.
I need a procedure to do this.
For Eg:
MyProc_GetRowsFromBigTable(startRowNo,endRowNo) should get me only the rows in the specified range.
Thanks in advance,

Hi there, i was wondering if there are any performance issues involved with having two websites using one SQL2000 database. Both the websites need to update, insert and select from the single Database. I was hoping to get any comments / views that you may have.

When there is 1 DB machine for 2 web sites, is it better to have
One DataBase-instance running with 2 DataBase-Initial-Catalogs ?
or
Two DataBase-instances running, each with 1 DataBase-Initial-Catalog ?
using SQLExpress or SQLServer
please only look at those possible, simple conditions.
forget about read/write same tables, security issues..
Interms of Memory/CPU/ Performance, which setting seems better ?
Please give some thoughts on Performance / DataLoad / Consumption,,,etc...
thanks.

I'm new to SQL Server and relatively new to database design and I have a specific problem I'm trying to resolve. I have a collection of records in a table (let's call them 'tasks') which represent some list of things that needs to be completed. Each task has an associated datetime on which this action is to commence, and my applications is responsible for executing these tasks. My first instinct is to regularly poll the 'tasks' table to determine if there are any tasks which have not been processed and are past their schedule start datetime. But, I'm wondering if there is some sort of database feature that would recognize that a task's starttime has arrived, and could somehow communicate this to my application without my application having to constantly poll the database. Thanks.

I need to select certain rows based on a "datetime" column. I need to select rows from 8am yesterday until 8am today.
In Oracle I would use:
select * from foo where TIMESTAMP >= trunc(sysdate - 1) + 8/24 AND TIMESTAMP < trunc(sysdate) + 8/24.
This would start at 8am yesterday and end at 7:59am today.
How would I do this with T-SQL?
thank you,

Hello!
I have a table that, among other columns, has two datetime columns which indicate the initial and the final time. This would be an exemple of data in this table:
row1:
initial_time: 2006-05-24 8:00:00
final_time: 2006-05-24 8:30:00
row2:
initial_time: 2006-05-24 8:35:00
final_time: 2006-05-24 9:15:00
I would like to split a row in two new rows if final time's hour is different of initial time's hour, so I would like to split row2 into:
row2_a:
initial_time: 2006-05-24 8:35:00
initial_time: 2006-05-24 8:59:59
row2_b:
initial_time: 2006-05-24 9:00:00
initial_time: 2006-05-24 9:15:00
Is it possible to do it in a query, I mean, without using procedures?
Thank you!

I am dealing with an old ASP.NET 1.1 web app that I want to fix and
update. The existing site has an SQL database on the web host's SQL
server. I want to rip a complete copy of this database (it isn't large,
only 9MB) onto my desktop computer, so I can alter it and "bench test"
the changes I'm making to the overall application in VS2005.
Now, I have tried to yank a copy of this database and its structure
using GUI programs like Visual Studio 2005, SQL Studio Manager Express, and EMS SQL
Manager, none seem to offer a "Save As" option. While I can easily make changes to the database and its tables
on the web host's server (sql.hostname.net) with no problem, I can't
figure out how to pull a copy off of their server and onto my machine...
Does this problem have a very simple solution that I am overlooking?
Thank you for any advice!

Hi People,
hope someone can help me out here with a little problem.
Basically i've go a asp.net page which has a listbox on. This list box is populated from a SQL database table with the datetime of the a selected field. Thus in the list box you get a list of strings looking like this "24/09/07 12:58"
Also on the page is a submit button, and some other editing textboxes. The main issue here is the when the submit button is used i get the currently selected listbox timedate string and then pass this along with other items to update a record in the database based on the datetime in the listbox control.
Below is how i get the string from the listbox control
Dim except_time As DateTime
except_time = DropDownList1.SelectedValue
The expect_time is then passed to store procedure along with some other vars, which looks like this
-- =============================================-- Author: Lee Trueman-- Create date: 1st Sept 2007-- =============================================CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[spExcept_UpdateData] -- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here @validated bit, @update_time datetime, @except_time datetimeASBEGIN -- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from -- interfering with SELECT statements. SET NOCOUNT ON
-- Insert statements for procedure here UPDATE exceptions SET validated = @validated, update_time = @update_time WHERE (except_time = @except_time)END
So validated and update_time should be updated when except_time is equal to @except_time
My problem is that the database never updates. If i debug the asp.net page the watch var shows the datetime in US format (I.e "09/24/07 12:58"), if this is true then this would explain why when it is passed to the stored proc nothing gets updated, as there would not be a date match.
can anyone see any silly mistakes i'm doing here ????

I'm trying to query data from a database for a report that looks for the last 2 weeks starting at 10pm, taking a value once every 24 hours. Using
AND DateTime >= DateAdd(wk,-2,GETDATE())
AND DateTime <= GetDate()")
I easily get the last two weeks but the query obviously only grabs the data at the time the query runs. I need to be able to run it any time of the day but only grab the data at 10pm. I'm very new at this so please excuse my ignorance but I could really use some help with this. Thanks very much.

If I create a website in VWD express and create a database in the APP_DATA folder it works great. Then if I attach it in SQL Management Studio, when I go back to opening the website I get MyMachineaspnet can not log into database. Even if I copy the database.mdf file of a working site to a different folder, rename it, attach it. The original website fails to open the original database. With out changing anything. If it's a DNN website it returns Website currently unavalable. After this happens I can in VWD open and see the tables in the database. I think databases created in the APP_DATA folder in VWD are "User Instances" I don't normally see them in SQL management Studio. Something about the Studio breaks them.
This is getting old real quick so PLEASE tell me what am missing here. Thanks

Hi, I have installed reporting services on 2 servers now and each time I click: "Report Server Virtual Directory", "Report Manager" "Virtual Directory" or "Web Service Identity" in the Reporting Services Configuration Manager I get the following error:
"An error occurred while enumerating the websites on "SERVER1". If "SERVER1" is a remote server, try changing the firewall settings in the operating system to allow the enumeration. The exception details are: Library not registered.
After this I cannot change any settings under these configuration items.
The servers I have tried installing are running Server2003 R2 SP1 x32 & x64.
I have tried changing service accounts, reinstalling IIS, reinstalling Reporting Services, changing website permissions and IIS configuration but I keep getting this same error.
The server is not a remote server nor is there a firewall present. As the error states there is a unregistered library but I don't know which one.
Thanks in advance.

ORDER BY name
but this is not giving me the result that I am looking for. What is the best way to match a DateTime field type using the current date without the time?

Hello:
I've recently discovered the MS CRM 3.0 stamps any datetime field in SQL as UTC (aka GMT). Even though the end user may select 12:00 noon on the CRM gui interface, the datetime is stamped in SQL as 16:00 (I'm in EST).
So, is there an easy way to read the 16:00 back to local EST, taking into account daylightsavings (DST)? Apparently in VB or C# this conversion is a trivial matter of using ToLocalTime(), but I don't believe SQL 2005 has such a convenient function.
I'm currently building a SQL view that I wish to use to support multiple reports, and it would be ideal for the view to translate the UTC datetime fields (even if via a user-defined function) to EST rather than coding every report or custom app to translate the UTC.
Any suggestions or links to code will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Pete

Is there a way to adjust a date and time depending on the users locale before inserting into the database?

My server is in the US and I want to reset part of the users db record when it's the end of the day in their country so I need to enter the date and time into the db plus or minus the time difference, is there a function written to do this already or would i need to write my own?

I have a chart showing quantity against time. I had been using X-Axis in category mode, but wanted to include all dates, so changed it to Scalar mode by checking "Numeric or time-scale values".
However instead of displaying dates it simply shows integers, and to make things worse, Y-axis values have all come out as zero. It appears that the integer values are simply sequential values for each datapoint (i.e. 1,2,3,4 etc).
The category field for the X-Axis is a field called "Date" which comes from a Date Type field in the cube based on a datetime column in the DSV. The properties of the category in the chart are : Group On =Fields!Date.Value and Label =Fields!Date.Value.
Am I missing something obvious?

Hi,
I'm having problems with a stored procedure, that i'm hoping someone can help me with.
I have a table with 2 columns - Username (varchar), LastAllocation (datetime)
The Username column will always have values, LastAllocation may have NULL values. Example
Username | LastAllocation
------------------------
Greg | 02 October 2005 15:30
John | 02 October 2005 18:00
Mike | <NULL>
My stored procedure needs to pull back a user name with the following criteria:
If any <NULL> dates send username of first person where date is null, sorted alphabetically, otherwise send username of person with earliest date from LastAllocation
Then update the LastAllocation column with GETDate() for that username.
This SP will be called repeatedly, so all users will eventually have a date, then will be cycled through from earliest date. I wrote an SP to do this, but it seems to be killing my server - the sp works, but I then can't view the values in the table in Enterprise Manager. SP is below - can anyone see what could be causing the problem, or have a better soln?
Thanks
Greg

Just installed SQL Server 2005 and tested my old VS 2005 ASPnet websites, which were connected toSQL Server 2000 databases before. All my websites were created for local HTTP applications, coded with a connection string with User ID and Password. The SQL Server 2000 was configured as mixed authentication (i.e. with User ID and Password). These websites worked very well with SQL Server 2000 database server.Testing my old VS 2005 websites with SQL Server 2005 database, showed a 'Login failed for a User ''.' error msgalthough the 'Test Connection' on VS 2005 design showed a perfect query for e.g. a GridView control. I have assured that the UserID/Password were correct for Management Studio Security object'slogin and Database Security's user. The server instance was configured with mixed authentication mode. One thing I am not sure of is, when clicking the Management Studio icon, a Connection dialog showed up, asking for a Windows or MIxed authentication? I just stayed with the Windows authentication. What does the authenticationmode have anything to do with the VS 2005 website connection? Should I change to mixed authetnication mode?TIA,Jeffrey

Hi Everyone.

What is the best way of doing this? For example, should I create a new row if a column is changed in a row and Time Stamp all record? What happens when I have child tables link to a Header table?
I have been looking on the NET for methods of creating a historical database, but I cant find any.

Hi,
I have a question about historical table. I have a table in Sql Server that keeps the history of my clients for the last 3 months.
This table has a PK : client_code and rep_date_id. I want to do a query that returns me a client and to extract the date when i inregistreted for the first time.
I think about a cursor, but i don't know how to use it.
My table looks like this structure:
- client_code
-activity_code
-country_code
-district_code
-...
-rep_date_id_n
And I want to return
--activity_code
-country_code
-district_code
-...
-start_date
-current_date

A general data design question:We have data which changes every week. We had considered seperatinghistorical records and current records into two different tables withthe same columns, but thought it might be simpler to have them alltogether in one table and just add a WeekID int column to indicatewhich week it represents (and perhaps an isCurrent bit column to makequerying easier). We have a number of tables like this, holding weeklydata, and we'll have to query for historical data often, but only backthrough the last year -- we have historical data going back to 1998 orso which we'll rarely if ever look at.Is the all-in-one-table approach better or the seperation of currentand historical data? Will there be a performance hit to organizing datathis way? I don't think the extra columns will make querying too muchmore awkward, but is there anything I'm overlooking in this?Thanks.

From what I've read this is called 'slowly changing dimensions'. Bassically the system I'm working on needs to store the history of certain data so that at any time a user can look up an old project and view it exactly as is, even though the associated parts might have had certain changes over time. From what I can tell Type 2 ( current and historical records are stored in the same table) seems to be the most popular. Type 4 (current records in one table and historical records in a seperate history table) seems like it would also work but I've been unable to find any articles comparing the two. Does anybody have any info on the dis/advantages of one v.s. the other?

I have about 45000 records in a CSV file, which I am using as HTTP request parameters to query a website and store some results in a database. This is the kind of application which runs 24/7, so database grows really quickly. Every insert fires up a trigger, which has to look for some old records based on some criteria and modify the last inserted record. My client is crazy about performance on this one and suggested to move the old records into another table, which has exactly the same structure, but would serve as a historical table only (used to generate reports, statistics, etc.), whilst the original table would store only the latest rows (so no more than 45k at a given time, whereas the historical table may grow to millions of records). Is this a good idea? Having the performance in mind and the fact that there's that trigger - it has to run as quickly as possible - I might second that idea. Is it good or bad? What do you think?
I read a similar post here, which mentioned SQL Server 2005 partitioning, I might as well try this, although I never used it before.

Hi,
I have a SQL2005 db for tracking the prices of products at multiple retailers. The basic structure is, 'products' table lists individual products, 'retailer_products' table lists current prices of the products at multiple retailers, and 'price_history' table records when the price of a product changes at any retailer. The prices are checked from each retailer daily, but a row is added to the 'price_history' only when the price at the retailer changes.
Database create script:
http://www.boltfile.com/directdownload/db_create_script.sql
Full database backup:
http://www.boltfile.com/directdownload/database.bak
Database diagram:
http://www.boltfile.com/directdownload/diagram_0.pdf
I have the following query to retrieve the price history of a given product at multiple retailers:
SELECT
price_history.datetimeofchange, retailer.name, price_history.price
FROM
product, retailer, retailer_product, price_history
WHERE
product.id = 'b486ed47-4de4-417d-b77b-89819bc728cd'
AND
retailer_product.retailerid = retailer.id
AND
retailer_product.associatedproductid = product.id
AND
price_history.retailer_productid = retailer_product.id
This gives the following results:
2008-03-08 Example Retailer 22.3
2008-03-28 Example Retailer 11.8
2008-03-30 Example Retailer 22.1
2008-04-01 Example Retailer 11.43
2008-04-03 Example Retailer 11.4
The question(s) I have are how can I:
1 - Get the price of a product at a given retailer at a given date/time
For example, get the price of the product at Retailer 2 on 03/28/2008. Table only contains data for Retailer 1 for this date, the behaviour I want is when there is no data available for the query to find the last data at which there was data from that retailer, and use the price from that point - i.e. so for this example the query should result in 2.3 as the price, given that was the last recorded price change from that retailer (03/08/2008).
2 - Get the average price of a product at a given retailer at a given date/time
In this case we would need to perform (1) across all retailers, then average the results
I'd really appretiate anyone's help on this :)
many thanks in advance,
dg

I've got a customer who wants reproducible/historical reporting. The problem is that the underlying data changes.
I tried to explain that this can't be done (can it?), but he doesn't
understand.
To illustrate the situation - Let's say a teacher wants to track
spelling test scores for her students.
The below are scores for students A, B, and C (for January, February, March)
A: {70,80,85}
B: {70,65, 80}
C: {100,90,100}
So, I can generate a historical report that charts the class average
and student trend - that's pretty easy.
Now, in April, we find that the school board has mandated that the
British spelling of words is ok, so now the cumulative scores (for
January, February, March, April)
A: {90,80,85,100}
B: {80,65, 80,80}
C: {100,90,100,75}
He wants a report showing the January average as (70+70+100)/3 = 80,
when really it is (90+80+100)/3 = 90.
Now imagine that there are actually thousands of data points changing like this...
Now also imagine that we add and remove students on a regular basis...
He and his office manager get frustrated when I explain that the
reports are not simple - in their mind it is. They have determined
the solution is to get a report writer and buy Crystal Reports...
I've tried to explain that the problem is that the report
specification is unclear (basically - they don't understand what they want). The situation is ok for now, I'm just trying to plan for when they figure out that buying Crystal Reports won't change their situation (except they are done several thousand dollars)...
Any tips?

I must be missing something somewhere...
I have a simple table with three fields: ID, LastName, FirstName. The ID is defined as the PK. In the table is a record of "12345, Smith, John". The incoming flat file has a record of "12345, Smith, Johnny".
In the SCD transform, the ID is the business key, and Last Name and First Name are defined as historical attributes.
During the load, the SCD transform correctly sends the data down the right path, but the insert fails with a primary key violation - as I would expect since it's trying to create a new current record.
How do I get around this problem without removing the PK ???
thx

I have a database which contains time series data (historical stock prices) which I have to search for patterns on a day to day basis. But searching this historical data for patterns is very time consuming not only in writing the complex t-sql scripts but also executing them.
Table structure for one min data:
[Date] [Time] [Open] [High], [Low], [Close], [Adjusted_Close], [MA], [DI].....
Tick Data:
[Date] [Time] [Trade]
Most time consuming queries are with lots of inner joins. So for example if I have to compare first few mins data then I have to do inner join like:
With IntervalData AS
(
SELECT [Date], Sum(CASE WHEN 1430 = [Time] THEN [PriceRange] END) AS '1430',
Sum(CASE WHEN 1431 = [Time] THEN [PriceRange] END) AS '1431',
Sum(CASE WHEN 1432 = [Time] THEN [PriceRange] END) AS '1432'
FROM [INDU_1] GROUP BY [Date]
)
SELECT [Date] ,[1430], [1431], [1432], [1431] - [1430] As 'Range' from IntervalData
WHERE ([1430] > 0 AND [1431] < 0 AND [1432] < 0) OR ([1430] < 0 AND [1431] > 0 AND [1430] > 0)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
select ind1.[Time], ind1.PriceRange,ind2.[Time], ind2.PriceRange from INDU_1 ind1
INNER JOIN INDU_1 ind2 ON ind1.[Time] = ind2.[Time] - 1 AND ind1.[Date] = ind2.[Date]
where (ind1.[Time] = 2058) AND ((ind1.PriceRange > 0 AND ind2.PriceRange >0) OR (ind2.PriceRange < 0 AND ind1.PriceRange < 0))
ORDER BY ind1.[Date] DESC;
Is there anyway I can use Sql 2005 Data mining models to make this searching faster?

I am working on a project, which involves displaying trends of certain aggregate values over time. For example, suppose we want to display how the number of active and inactive users changed over time.
One issue is how to store historical data. First of all, should I create a separate database for each historical snapshot or should I use one database for all snapshots? Second, our database size is a couple of gigabytes and replicating the entire database on a daily basis is not feasible. An alternative solution is to back up aggregate values, but how do I back up results of aggregate queries, where the user can specify a date range in the WHERE-clause? Another solution is to create fact tables from our relational schema and back those up.
Another issue is how to query historical data. Using multiple databases to store historical snapshots makes it harder to query.
As you can see there are several design alternatives and I would like to know how this sort of problem is generally solved in the industry. Does SQL Server provide any support for solving this problem?
Thanks.

IN THE PRODUCTION SYSTEM, THEREFORE, ANY SQL ASREQUESTED ABOVE WILL CONTAIN IN ITS WHERE CLAUSE (fldRuleAppliedID IsNULL)if exists (select * from dbo.sysobjects where id =object_id(N'[dbo].[tblTSCollected]') and OBJECTPROPERTY(id,N'IsUserTable') = 1)drop table [dbo].[tblTSCollected]GOCREATE TABLE [dbo].[tblTSCollected] ([fldCollectedID] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,[fldEmployeeID] [int] NULL ,[fldLocationCode] [varchar] (50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_ASNULL ,[fldTimeStamp] [datetime] NULL ,[fldRuleAppliedID] [int] NULL ,[fldBarCode] [varchar] (50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL) ON [PRIMARY]GOINSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (963, 'VB001', '2005-10-18 11:59:27.383', 45480)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (963, 'VB002', '2005-10-18 12:06:17.833', 45480)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (964, 'VB001', '2005-10-18 12:56:20.690', 45481)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (964, 'VB002', '2005-10-18 15:30:35.117', 45481)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (964, 'VB003', '2005-10-18 16:05:05.880', 45481)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (966, 'VB001', '2005-10-18 11:52:28.307', 97678)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (966, 'VB002', '2005-10-18 13:59:34.807', 97678)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (966, 'VB001', '2005-10-18 14:04:55.820', 97678)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (966, 'VB003', '2005-10-18 16:10:01.943', 97678)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (968, 'VB001', '2005-10-18 11:59:34.307', 98374)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (968, 'VB002', '2005-10-18 12:04:56.037', 98374)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (968, 'VB004', '2005-10-18 12:10:02.723', 98374)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (977, 'VB001', '2005-10-18 12:05:06.630', 96879)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (982, 'VB001', '2005-10-18 12:06:13.787', 96697)
